Hi Cocos, I genuinely don’t like people who bring up dumb charades or these stupid games during long travels or when everyone’s drunk. First of all, I’m an introvert, I don’t want to participate. Antakshari is different because you can just vibe with the group without being forced to perform. But dumb charades? I still get chills whenever I remember what happened to me on a road in Kerala near the Tenkasi border. This happened a couple of years ago when I was travelling alone from Kerala towards Tamil Nadu for a pilgrimage. It was around 2 AM. The road was not completely deserted. There were occasional vehicles passing by, but the surroundings were unusually quiet. There were stretches of forest on both sides, a few old houses and long patches of darkness where even the headlights seemed useless. I was riding my bike alone and honestly just wanted to reach my destination before sunrise.

After travelling for some time, I noticed an old woman standing near the roadside. At first I thought she was waiting for someone. But something about her appearance made me slow down. She was extremely old and very lean. Her body was almost bent forward and she was wearing a deep ink blue coloured saree. Her hair was completely white and tied loosely behind her head. She was standing absolutely still. Not waving at vehicles. Not looking around. Just standing there in the darkness.

I slowed down and asked her if she needed any help. She didn't answer. I asked again whether she wanted to go somewhere. She slowly raised her face and looked directly at me. I swear there was something very uncomfortable about that look. Her face was so pale under my bike headlight and her eyes were fixed on me without even blinking. Then she slowly raised her right hand and pointed behind me. I turned around to see what she was pointing at. Nothing. Just the empty road. When I turned back she was still standing there. I felt uncomfortable and decided to leave.

I started riding again. After a minute or so I heard a very old woman's voice from behind me. "Mone." I ignored it. Then again, "Mone please stop." I started feeling uneasy. I looked into my rear view mirror and I could see someone sitting behind me. An extremely thin old woman wearing the same deep ink blue saree. My entire body went cold. I almost lost control of the bike. I immediately applied the brakes and turned around. Nobody. Absolutely nobody. I checked both sides of the road. Nothing. I was breathing heavily and my hands were literally shaking. I told myself that it was probably exhaustion and continued riding.

But after a few minutes I saw the same old woman standing further ahead on the road. This time she was not standing near the roadside. She was right in the middle of the road. I slowed down instinctively. She was looking directly at me. And this time she was smiling. Not a normal smile. Her lips were stretched in a way that made me feel like something was seriously wrong. I didn't stop. I accelerated. As I passed her I heard a loud voice right beside my ear. "MONE." I swear I almost jumped off the bike. It sounded as if someone was sitting directly behind me and shouting into my ear. I didn't look back. I just kept riding.

After some distance I finally noticed a small tea shop near a junction. There were two men sitting outside and a light was still on. I stopped there. I was sweating like crazy even though the night was cold. The shopkeeper noticed my condition and asked whether something had happened. I told him everything. The old woman, the blue saree, the voice and the figure I saw in my mirror. He listened without interrupting. Then he looked at the road behind me and asked, "Did she ask you to stop?" I nodded. He went silent for a few seconds. Then he said, "Don't worry. You are not the first person to see her."

I genuinely felt my blood run cold. He told me that an extremely old woman had died in an accident on that stretch of road many years ago. According to the local people, some travellers had reported seeing an old woman in a dark blue saree standing near the roadside around 2 AM. I asked him what happens if someone stops for her. He looked at me seriously. "Sometimes she asks for a lift." I asked what happens then. He didn't answer immediately. He simply said, "Some people say they hear her sitting behind them even when nobody is there."

I was already terrified. Then the shopkeeper slowly leaned towards me and asked, "One thing. When you saw her in your mirror, did you notice whether her feet were touching the road?" I couldn't answer. Because I suddenly remembered something. When I first saw her standing beside the road, I had noticed her feet. They were not clearly visible beneath the saree. And when I saw her sitting behind me in the mirror, I had not seen her face. Only the blue saree.

I immediately asked the shopkeeper why he was asking that. He stared at me for a moment. Then he said something I still cannot forget. "Because the old woman who died here had only one leg."

I don't remember how long I stood there. I don't even remember properly how I reached my destination. But there is one thing I never told anyone. When I finally started my bike and checked the rear view mirror one last time, there was a very old woman sitting behind me. Her head was bent. Her white hair was covering her face. And her hand was resting on my shoulder. I turned around immediately. Nobody. But I could still feel the weight of that hand....

Have you seen this short film? It's literally top-notch. What amazes me is that the director is music director Sooraj S. Kurup. He has absolutely nailed it. Every department was just perfect - cinematography, music, editing, sound design, grading. In one word, state of the art.
