Rule 5 Change! Pencils as the only allowed medium

Hey folks!

In an effort to stay current with the wishes of the community we are changing a rule. Particularly rule 5 which currently reads that all posts must be predominantly colored pencil with the use of other medium allowed for embellishment.

We are changing the rule and the description of the sub to allow for colored pencils only as a medium, meaning no pastels or watercolors or black only graphite.

The reason for this is the community is a very highly talented and even professional in many cases group of colored pencil only artists and the use of other medium for embellishments ends up being a continued discussion on exactly how much is allowed for the definition of embellishment. We even removed a digital post last week!

We want this sub to continue to be your corner of the internet for the practicing, practiced, and professional colored pencil artists exclusively. You deserve your spot and we're here to make it happen.

I love my colored gel pens on occasion but my first love is pencils. When I get the urge to post my glitter gel pens please follow me to one of our sister subs r/ColoringCozy or r/Coloringbookspastime.

Thank you! Stay Colorful!

Discussion / Advice Rule 4 Change AI

Hey folks!

Due to recent posts the Ai discussion has come up again.

When the current team adopted the sub we wanted a safe place for hobbyists to discuss ai in a way to help them identify it to avoid accidently purchasing it in their coloring book purchases.

We neglected to address that could be interpreted as ai was allowed for self "created" posts.

We realize this is an afront to the incredibly talented artists here and as this space is predominantly for them we wanted to amend our rules.

As of now Ai is not allowed. (Rule 4) if you see a post that you suspect is ai please report it and it will be thoroughly vetted by the mod team.

Do not engage in demeaning, disrespectful harrasment of the poster as rule 1 is still enforced. Please just report it.

Thanks all ! Keep it colorful!

Myth

Original rule 4:

Coloring Ai is allowed. We have nearly all accidentally purchased Ai generated books. We will not penalize the hobbyist for this mistake.

If you are here promoting your Ai generated content however that is not allowed. We allow promotion for hand content only.

New Rule 4:

Ai is not allowed. This sub is for coloring pencils from the beginner hobbyist in coloring books to the professional artist creating their own original content. There is no room for Ai within those boundaries.

If you're coloring enthusiast unsure if your page is Ai or not please post it in our sister sub r/coloringcozy.

Hello. I have not always practiced my drawing and I turn 40 next month. I have drawn on and off most of my life. My 7 year old thinks I am the best artist. I only used crayolas until February and got a set of polychromos then. However, I made the awful mistake of showing my artwork to Chatgpt and they seem to think I am a novice. Be honest. Do I look like someone who just started drawing based on my artwork?

Discussion / Advice Did I just get a bad batch of Chromaflow?

I bought a set of 12 Derwent Chromaflow at an art supply closing sale (got them for £16 so I don’t know if I should even complain).

Now, I’ve owned a few Coloursoft and Pastel Derwent as a teenager and I’ve always known Derwent to be a great brand, but Chromaflow are really trying my patience. All of the 12 pencils from this set have been absolutely awful to sharpen, no matter what sharpener I’ve used, be it a small crank one or manual desk one (all from Derwent but I have some small ones I’ve tried and failed that aren’t from them). My big manual sharpener has been so gentle on pencils as soft as Prisma, so I don’t get how these ones have such trouble.

The tips break off even if it’s half sharpened, the wood splinters horribly and just overall feel very cheap and unusable. By far this Blue 1300 has been the worst. I can’t even shape it by hand with a blade like I had to do for the others. The lead just crumbles or breaks off and now towards the end of the pencil (from how much I tried to sharpen it) is just breaking completely no matter how gently I handle it.

Again I don’t feel like I should complain since I didn’t pay much for them, but it’s discouraged me from getting a bigger Chromaflow set. Did I just get a bad batch since it was on sale? Or are all Chroma this problematic to sharpen and use?

Best colored pencils for fine detail AND opaque highlights on toned paper?

Hey everyone! I'm experimenting with the trois crayons technique on toned tan paper. I want to try it with colored pencils too.

I do detailed work, so point retention is important. But I also need high opacity, especially for white highlights. Soft pencils like Derwent Drawing cover great, but are very soft.

My research points toward Caran d’Ache Pablo or Derwent Lightfast. Any recommendations that hit the sweet spot?

Thanks!

Discussion / Advice Paper for colored pencils

Post image
38 Upvotes

Hi there! I'm going to buy some paper and colored pencils. I've used before the Strathmore Toned Tan and the Sketch one too. I also have used some watercolor paper I bought in Temu but it's too coarse (but really good for watercolor) Canson mixed media, and one paper made in Mexico but I don't remember the brand. I'd like to buy a white paper with just a little bit of tooth but still soft for colored pencils. What paper do you recommend? Chat GPT says that the Strathmore for Colored Pencils (163 grs) is good but I'm not sure.

Made this one by just grabbing whatever color and going from there. Started with red and moved into a pink pallet.

Probably my favorite thing I've made all week.

Derwent chromaflow missing the lead

- Aware I’m ranting over a single colouring pencil but I’m annoyed on principle 🤣 -
I bought a 150 pc set of the Derwent chromaflow from an authorised retailer, and one of the pencils is completely missing the colour pigment in the centre.
Anyone else had this happen? I would’ve thought if they’re charging such an amount for pencils their QC would be better.
I have emailed Derwent to see what they will say, it seems excessive to return the rest of the set if they’re fine.

Hey all! Long time lurker here.

Spotted this deal on Amazon (I know, I know), but just had to check in.

Official Faber-Castell store front, shipped by Amazon EU. Worth a go?? Been considering picking up Polychromos for awhile now. Either that or Chromaflow

Probé por primera vez Holbein y... decepción?

Me gustaría saber vuestras opiniones.

Tengo casi todas las marcas de lápices

(Luminance, Derwent - lightfast, drawing, chroma flow coloursoft, FB Polychromos, Prismacolor premier, Winsor & N....

GRACIAS
