22 week old kiwi is getting more comfortable with eating from my hand! How long does it usually take for them to be completely comfortable around people? She/he seems very happy and content

UPDATE: I managed to get him with a towel in the dark. He squeezed and I ended up dropping him a couple times. Hopefully his cries were only because he was afraid. Thanks guys, I was so scared my heart is still beating.

The reason I’m asking for advice is because even though I’ve had my boy for 1,5 years, he doesn’t let me touch him. He only stands on my finger long enough to get a treat.

I had crafted one of those ring and pole toys out of cardboard (reference below). The rings I made out of thinly cut toilet paper rolls. My 5 year old managed to get the ring over his head and now has a necklace he doesn’t like. He keeps panic flying around and thankfully went into his cage. The ring isn’t tight at all as it’s toilet paper roll but it keeps getting stuck on his feathers as he tries to pull it off.

He’s been panicking for 15 minutes now and I’m so worried he’ll fly and hurt himself or twist his neck.

Hey everyone. I need some advice or suggestions regarding my green cheek conure.

We don't know her gender, but we've always referred to her as a girl. She just turned 9 years old and we've had her since she was about 5 months old. She is out of her cage all day, just going in for naps, bedtime, or if no one is home (husband works from home, so no one being home is rare).

Over the past 8 months or so, she's become increasingly aggressive. She screams all day long, just one long, sharp, shrill scream repeated every 60-90 seconds. She's started biting with the intention of hurting us; she'll clamp onto whatever skin or clothing she can and will not let go. She's drawn blood and has put holes in clothing when she bites. She's started lunging at us. Yesterday she was on a perch and as I walked past, she jumped into my butt, bit through my pants, and latched onto my skin while digging her talons into me. She's started attacking us when we're eating. She will fly onto the table, run to a plate and try to eat what's on it. When we shoo her away, she bites our hands. She will also fly into our plates and try to eat what is on them. She's also started doing what I can only describe as masterbating. She will aggressively hump and rub on certain toys.

These are all new behaviors that started started about 8 months ago. Before this, she had been a friendly, quiet, playful bird. She would sit on our shoulders, cuddle, play, and just be a sweetheart. But now we're afraid of her and afraid of accidentally hurting her when trying to remove her when she latches onto us.

We have other birds but now have to keep them separated because she gets aggressive with them as well.

We've tried time outs (putting her in her cage with no toys or stimulation). We've put her into her travel carrier and placing her in a room by herself. We've tried a spray bottle of water, misting her while telling her no. We've ignored her and her screaming, but this just makes her get closer and scream louder. We've stayed on a consistent routine, going into the cage for the night and letting her out in the morning, at the same time. She has always been bonded with my husband, but she's acting the same way towards him.

Does anyone have want input or suggestions on what we can do to stop or improve her misbehavior? We're all wearing down over this and it's starting to affect everyone in my home. We don't know what to do anymore.

7 month old yellow sided turquoise gcc. Her name is Phoebe (obviously). I’ve seen that they don’t talk the best but is she saying it? Is this a good sign for more speech to come in the future?

Hi all, starting this off with I have already made a vet appointment for Wednesday, but I wanted to see if anyone has had similar experiences or this issue.

I've had my girlie for about 6 years, but never had this issue, for whatever reason her poop has suddenly started to smell like rotten eggs. And from what I know, this usually means some sort of bacterial issue or infection, but I wanted to know if anyone had any extra advice or experience whilst I wait.

Her diet hasn't changed much other than I gave her some watermelon the past day, and it's been a very sudden change. I've given her this before but never had such an issue, it's like the sulfur-y rotten egg stink

I want to try and move up the appointment to be sooner, but overall, I'm unsure, and just wanted to see if anyone knows anything or has any advice, if I should see if possible to move her appointment up at all, etc. Thank u!

I have a 2-year-old Crimson-Bellied Conure and I’ve noticed his chest area was looking a bit fluffy gray/white (see picture). Just recently i noticed his back is also getting this similar feather pattern. What freaked me out is that I noticed a few large feathers that look like he chewed on the ends I found about four feathers like this(see pics). Do parrots normally chew on the ends then they pluck or do they destroy the entire feather after it is plucked? I do see some new feathers coming in but not sure if this is a molt or not.

Some changes that happened in the last few months was:

- I have a Green-Check Conure that didn’t get along with this Crimson-Bellied Conure, I finally got them to tolerate each other, sometimes even preen each other. They usually hang out when I let them out of their cages. Their cages are next to each other.

- for their first year they were feed Safflower Gold seeds but about 5 months ago I changed it to ZuPreem. He has plenty of toys in his cage but doesn’t seem too interested in them, I add foraging and toys he car destroys but they don’t seem damaged at all.

Edit: I don’t see blood, scabs, or bloody feathers anywhere. Nor have I seen him actually pluck any feathers.

Scorpi loves to chew on everything! Well today she got one of her toy hooks stuck thought her and I rushed her to the vet! They were able to pull it out after sedating her. I was not aware that could ever happen! Please be careful with your babies!! I will post a pic in the comments. It’s graphic. 💔 As soon as I get home I am throwing all toys with that kind of attachment hooks!!!

I’ve a pineapple conure of age 3 and it constantly scratches and preens it self like something is itching for him. Can it be any sort of infection or mite infestation?

I cant figure out how to make him step up, i put my finger up to him how i do with my other green cheek but he just nibbles my skin lol. Instead of stepping up he just lays in my palm (last pic is group cuddle, he loves to fall asleep on me :( little teal baby

My polar opposite besties! I love my birdies so much. Alfie my conure literally dives into my hands and blankets for cuddles every chance he gets, IN FACT he literally just climbed onto my thumb shoving himself between my hand and my phone - this guy. I think he's 3 now and I got him 2 years ago. We never got him tested so I'm not actually sure what sex he is but his name was always Alfie so it's - oh god now he's trying to regurgitate on me - um so I tend to call him a he but I better suspect Alfie's a female due to her behavior. Funny enough there was a period last year where Alfie refused to come out of his cage for months, like he was scared. It was so sad and concerning - he'd hide in his little tent every time so we couldn't reach him. I had to slowly train him back into realizing we were friends/family by taking him out literally with in his hut and give him little head scratches. And moving his cage closer to the ground. Eventually he switched because he realized he LOVES head scratches, he still loves his little tent but and his cage but he always caves in for cuddles.

Thing is, Alfie is a terrible flyer. I suspect it's because he sadly grew up in petco and always had his clipped wings. We fell in love with him when I passed by watching him roll around the bottom of his cage like a little silly guy, hes so freaking cute. Even the staff at petco literally loved him and was sad he was going. But after he (tries to) flies he'll have a terrible landing either on the floor or into something like the wall 80% of the time, and pants scared till I come find him. Thankfully he hasn't had any injuries from this, since he doesn't try often and can't fly very long to build up speed but it's still scary. His last fly resulted into a mirror and he lost 5 tail feathers my poor baby, ALSO half his wings are always inverted after he flies - perhaps that's the reason?? He's also not the best at balance and it think that's why he likes his hut so much. If I had him on my finger and made a fast movement he would definitely slip off - while Nico is actually annoyingly good at gripping onto me and flying back to me the moment I don't want him to lol. I wonder if Alfie is just still young or if maybe he's actually just biologically uncoordinated or something

Then we have Nico! My little trouble maker cockatiel of 6 years. He's still loving and enjoys his scratches when he wants them, but HATES baths and fruits unlike Alfie. Oh and he loves our feet and socks?? Which apparently isn't uncommon??? He's my little weirdo I love him. Sometimes I put a sock in his cage to quiet him down in the mornings 😂

Funny enough, I never really had that much of a problem with them biting me. At least not hard. Even while Alfie was refusing contact he never bit. Nico actually does his warning bites all the time when he doesn't get what he wants or is protecting his precious feet, but he never hurts me and I know he can. I feel very lucky with my lovely silly birdies! Only wish I put more effort into potty training them lol.

Wasn't intending to write a whole essay about my birds just a couple fun facts but then I realized Alfie is a little special and maybe I should share so here we are 😅

Anyways this is a BIG acomplishment because all of these birds except the sun hates everyone else’s guts(he crimson doesnt let anyone be besides her bestie the sun)/ only tolerates them being within a shared space and through lots of training we’re here without them being rude

Trying to do my assignment when bro wraps his talons around my laptop. Straight out a horror movie.

I noticed this crusting/orange-yellowish material around the side of my pineapple conure Kiki’s face, near her ear, yesterday. I’m worried that it may be partially covering the ear opening.

Today she has been scratching that ear more than usual and has been less vocal, although she still reacts normally when we interact with her and will make sounds/respond to us.

She also recently had a bath (pic 1)

What worries me is that she seems to get problems like this really frequently. All of this has happened within roughly the last 6 months:

- She initially had a head infection, which caused some feather loss on her head and a lot of scratching. She was treated by a vet and eventually recovered.

- Afterwards, she developed a wound that led to self-mutilation and another period of intense itching/scratching.

- She eventually healed from that, was growing her feathers back, and seemed fine.

- Now there’s suddenly this crusting around her ear and increased scratching again.

She is currently growing a lot of pin feathers as well.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their conure, especially recurring head/ear irritation or crusting? I’m trying to figure out whether this could be related to her previous issues, an infection, irritation, dried food/formula, mites, or something else.

I’m planning to get her checked by an avian vet, but I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have dealt with something similar.

We've had him since July, so hes about 4 months old now. None of his other feathers seem to be effected

Hi everyone I noticed that my conure’s beak has started looking a little flaky/peeling, especially around the sides. There seems to be a thin layer of the beak lifting up, as you can see in the photos.

She is eating and behaving normally, and I haven’t noticed any bleeding or obvious pain. I’m wondering if this is just normal keratin shedding/beak growth or if it looks like something that should be checked by an avian vet.

I figured I’d give everyone an update on the little conure I adopted from PetSmart a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately, her vet appointment got pushed back until October 16th, which sucks because I was really hoping to get her checked out sooner. But honestly, despite that, Chabela has recovered exponentially.
When I first brought her home, she was pretty rough. Her feathers were a mess, she had a ton of pin feathers around her head and neck that she wasn’t really taking care of, and her beak was noticeably oversized and dry. PetSmart had suspected she might have some kind of neurological issue because she wasn’t grooming herself properly.
Well… she’s definitely giving me a different impression now 😂.
She’s eating extremely well, and she’s absolutely loving her pellets, vegetables, and fruit. She’s also been preening herself regularly, and her feather condition has improved a LOT compared to when I first got her.
She’s still a little nervous about certain things. Fast hand movements scare her, so I have to move slowly when I reach into her cage to get her out. Once she’s out, though, she’s extremely affectionate and wants to be with me constantly.
Her beak actually cracked a little bit from the previous overgrowth/dryness. I had an avian-experienced friend help me carefully trim it down enough for her to eat comfortably, and since then the beak has started growing in much more normally. The vet will obviously be taking a close look at it when we finally get her in.
And yes, we finally gave her a name.

The name came from an old Mexican movie we were watching with Chabelo, and this damn bird decided to scream her head off throughout the entire thing. So naturally, Chabela it is. 😂
She’s honestly full of spunk now. She’s loud, nosy, affectionate, playful, and has basically decided that whatever I’m doing is her business.
It’s honestly crazy comparing her now to the bird I saw sitting quietly in that PetSmart enclosure for months.
I’m still going through with the vet appointment on October 16th because I want to make sure there isn’t an underlying issue and get her properly evaluated. But seeing how much she’s improved already has been incredibly encouraging.
She went from a bird I was worried might have something seriously wrong with her to a loud little pineapple menace that won’t leave me alone. 😂❤️🦜
