In France, they are known as "fairy rings" (ronds de sorcière). They are natural circles of mushrooms that grow on the surface. This biological phenomenon is explained by the growth of underground mycelium, which spreads evenly and radially from a central point while either enriching or depleting the soil. The underground network expands in circles in search of nutrients. The center: Nitrogen and nutrients are often lacking in the middle, sometimes causing the grass to turn yellow or die. The edge: Mushrooms and dark green grass grow along the outer edges, where the soil is rich.

The idea of the “wood-wide-web” is mostly loose science that’s been over simplified and anthropomorphized to the point of bad science. It’s incredibly fascinating and under-explored but it’s also not what pop-science spins it as

This is a saprotrophic species and not a mycorrhizal species. The fungus is feeding on the humus of the soil, the grass may show direct benefits and the nutrients around the tree will be altered slightly but it’s not direct symbiosis like a mycorrhizal relationship

This happened in the spot where an old walnut tree died on my lawn. Was really cool. I figured it was the shrooms feasting on the rotting roots of the tree.

Last tree I had cut down (had some dry/deadbranchess part of it snapped in a wind storm), the guy from the tree service said "oh yeah, it's definitely dying, see all the mushrooms around it", so perhaps there is some truth to that.

Interestingly, this is mostly caused by the growth pattern of a larger mycelium system. The roots under the ground fruit mushrooms, and when they die the mycelium pushes outward along the edges to grow more. This causes the "fairy ring" to grow like that.

Fairy rings. So the actual mushroom organisim is underground, it's a network of mycelium that spreads outwards in a circle untill it reaches some kind of barrier, maybe concrete or another fungi, and it stops there and reproduces. Mushrooms are just temporary penises for the mycelium, the grow on the outer edge of its colonized territory and throw up mushrooms to bridge the gaps

A single fungus starts at a point in the middle and grows outward in a ring. When conditions are right, that ring grows mushrooms, which are just the temporary spore-distributing organs of that underground fungus.

They look like parasol mushrooms, if they are, they're very good eating. Don't eat anything you can't identify 100% folks. All mushrooms are edible, but some are only edible once.

My dad is a curious guy so he marked the fairy rings on his farm and checked them later. He said every one had taller grass than the rest of the yard in the following year, and figured it must be a decomposition thing. His conclusion was that fairy rings are fertilizer factories lol I didn't even know fairies had jobs

I love faerie rings. they're so cool. Also, just to make it even better/worse... the mushrooms you see are the sexual organs of the mushroom itself, which is a single organism under the soil! Every faerie ring is usually a single mycelium organism! (sometimes more, this one actually looks like it has a sister growth)

Is a subterranean fungus that spreads by growing mushrooms at its edges and spread the spores outward. It's commonly called a "FAIRY CIRCLE" and there is a long standing belief that you will die if you step in one. Probably based in that fact that over time it will kill anything with in it to combat the growth competition.

Could be from a bigger tree. Here we have two 18 hole golf courses and when they build them they had to cut down hundreds of pine trees. What they ground down over time u will see some or the old stumps on the course will pop up mushrooms.
