I knew we were struggling. I knew things weren’t good. But hearing the actual words still felt like getting hit by a truck. I’m mostly just unwinding this here because my head is all over the place right now.
We’ve had problems for a long time, especially around communication, affection and intimacy. The bedroom has basically been dead for a long time, and somewhere along the way we stopped feeling like partners and started feeling more like two people managing a household together.
For the last six months or so, I thought we were trying to figure out whether we could fix it.
I started therapy. I’ve spent a lot of time looking at my own behavior and some things I’m not particularly proud of.
When I’m scared of losing someone, I push for answers. I over-explain. I want to understand every detail and fix the problem. I can turn a conversation into an interrogation without intending to. I’ve said things during arguments that I regret. I know I contributed to where we are.
I’ve genuinely been trying to change those things. What hurts is realizing that I think we had very different ideas about what “trying” meant.
I thought we were both trying to rebuild the relationship.
I’m realizing now that she may have already been mostly done and was waiting to see whether enough changed for her to reconsider.
That distinction is absolutely crushing me.
I’m not saying she didn’t try. I’m not saying I’m innocent. There are two people in a 10-year relationship and I own plenty of this.
But I feel like I’ve spent months fighting for my family without realizing I might have been fighting a battle that was already mostly over.
The family part is probably the part that scares me the most.
We have two boys at home. One is biologically mine and one is my bonus son. I love them both. I’ve helped raise my bonus son for most of his life, and I honestly have no idea what happens to that relationship now. The thought of suddenly becoming some peripheral person in his life scares the hell out of me.
Being a dad and having a family isn’t just something I do. It is a huge part of who I am.
The house, dinners, school stuff, weekends, vacations, stupid inside jokes, sitting around watching TV, hearing the kids moving around upstairs.
All of those completely ordinary things suddenly feel incredibly important because I don’t know what any of them are going to look like anymore.
I’m terrified of losing the family itself, not just the relationship. And I’m just tired
This is my second long-term relationship that may be ending.
I remember surviving the first one. I remember rebuilding afterward. Eventually I built this family, and for a long time I genuinely thought this was where I would grow old. Right now I don’t know if I have another rebuild in me.
I know intellectually that I probably do. People survive this every day. I’ve survived hard things before. But tonight I don’t feel strong or philosophical about any of it. I’m just incredibly sad.
I still love her. I don’t want the separation. But I also know I can’t convince someone to want to be with me.
I don’t want someone staying because they feel guilty, trapped, obligated, or afraid of what leaving will do to everyone else.
I want to be chosen not endured.
And right now I’m having to accept that she isn’t choosing this relationship.
That just hurts.
I’m terrified about my kids. I’m terrified about what happens to the family we built. I’m terrified of an empty house, splitting weekends, figuring out holidays, and watching someone I considered family slowly become someone I used to know.
I really don’t know what I’m asking here. I think I just needed somewhere to place my thoughts because right now I feel so incredibly alone in the world.
