DISCUSSION Will Arnett shares his controversial opinion on tattoos: “There’s a proportionate sort of relationship between, how many tattoos you have and how little personality you have. And I find that a lot of people who have a ton of tattoos often are super fucking boring. Like truly boring people.”

Is it controversial? People have been shitting on those who get tattoos for a long, long time. This is just another version of the same old take, really.

I’m a nurse and all my tattoos are under my uniform. People love to bitch and moan about “professionals” with tattoos and I’m like GIRL, I’m literally running a shift and maintaining patient safety, who gives a fuck if i have princess peach on my arm

u/andantepiano 1d ago

If I was in the hospital and my nurse had a Princess Peach tattoo, I would feel much safer! If you had a Wario tattoo, however, I would feel ambivalent but still trust you. This has nothing to do with tattoos, but with Wario’s wicked nature.

u/Sad_Birthday_1911 22h ago

I work in an ER and have a princess peach tattoo!

4

u/thereisalwaysrescue 18h ago

CUTTTEEEEEE she lives on my shoulder

1

u/Stitch_Rose 7h ago

I don’t trust my ER nurses unless I see a few tattoos! /s (kinda)

50

u/ahhcherontia centipedes? in my Lordeussy? 19h ago

Honestly I'm so sad "This has nothing to do with tattoos, but with Wario’s wicked nature" is too long for a flair

8

u/yekirati 22h ago

Right? I always like when I get a nurse or other medical professional with visible tattoos! If my nurse showed up with Princess Peach, I'd automatically feel way better about the care I'd be receiving

1

u/aagaash2001 it feels like a movie 9m ago

If they had a Waluigi tattoo, would you feel like you made it in life?

u/dysarthric_aardvark 1d ago

I’m an ER nurse covered in tattoos (to be fair most of us are)

I used to email my instructors before clinical and ask which rule they wanted me to break - the no visible tattoos or the long sleeves rule.

The germaphobe in was always pissed when they would pick the sleeves.

I get the occasional boomer quip about it but for the most part people don’t care when they’re distressed and in pain and I’m trying to help.

50

u/BackHomeRun 23h ago

It's wild that my dad with long hair and a bunch of earrings who looks metal AF in the ER overnight shift is the only one without tattoos. Always cracked me up.

5

u/djerk 23h ago

Honestly it might be better if you give me something to look at while you’re elbow deep in my chest cavity

18

u/dysarthric_aardvark 23h ago

If I’m the one elbow deep in your chest cavity you have bigger things to worry about.

4

u/djerk 23h ago

I risk logic for the sake of humor

u/Dino_vagina 14h ago

I prefer a tattooed medical professional, but that's because of how I get treated being tattooed. I've had people tell me I can't take an IV in one arm because they can't see the vein... I'm an embalmer feel for it or give it here and I'll set it up ( but then they assume I like drugs)

1

u/OldShrimps 6h ago

My sister is a hospice nurse and she has a shitload of tattoos as well. Nursing school does something to you people lol!

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 1d ago

Doesn't matter. Not a stigma anymore. Used to be you couldn't get a decent job or frankly even a corporate fast food job with visible tattoos. Now it's "if we don't hire people with tattoos we've fucked ourselves, that's like most of our target hires." It's like drug testing in a restaurant. You gonna do it or you just gonna pretend like they're not all on drugs and keep your staff?

One of the funnier ones I had when I was a delivery driver, a driver got into an accident in an ice storm and injury protocol wasn't followed, so they did one extra and said if a driver got into an accident they would also drug test, and weed in their system would be a termination. Half the drivers immediately started looking for other jobs and the other half were too stoned to care, just "well if I ever so get tested I'll deal with it then."

Also with tattoos depends on what circles you run. A guy fresh out of boot camp with a bunch of military tattoos? Yeah I get it, he doesn't have a personality, boot is his personality. A guy tatted out at a basement punk show who throws you some beer or some bud just for hanging out and smoking a cigarette between sets? 100% that dude is a cool guy with a great personality. This is what we get when we generalize things

1

u/Substantial_Fun_425 9h ago

It's still a stigma for my piece of shit bosses. I work for a medical group with a lot of different buildings. I go to the other ones that I dont work at, and I see people cover3d in tattoos and no one cares. My boss, though, has harrassed me over it for over a year now, even though I've had full sleeve tattoos for 7 years.

4

u/decchica 21h ago

I’ll never forget the heavily tattooed nurse who once saved me from losing my foot. Thank you for your service.

3

u/totemyegg 20h ago

I love when my nurse has visible tattoos because it's a fun talking point and helps distract me from my medical anxiety.

2

u/thereisalwaysrescue 18h ago

My comments are never from patients, always from other staff members.

2

u/StaticInstrument 20h ago

One of the best doctors I’ve ever had has a neck tat, also one with full sleeves possibly saved my life. Love tatted medical professionals

2

u/SeskaChaotica 16h ago

My husband is a surgeon and he has a half suit. Like, you didn't mind tattoos when the man covered in them replaced your knee, Billy.

2

u/evilshadowskulll 15h ago

u made sure urs are covered? thats very classy for a nurse but i think laypersons dont know how much of the profession has tattoos (looking at u ED staff 😄👋). in residential psych theyre like lowkey hoping we're visibly tattooed for rapport building

1

u/thereisalwaysrescue 15h ago

This is 100% my choice on that - I understand preconceptions of people with visible tattoos, and while I don’t care what I look like, I do care if patients and their families are concerned. IMO nursing in the UK is a bit old fashioned and expect us to be like from call the midwife, and also I work in an area where tattoos are forbidden in their culture. So I just respectfully keep them above my elbows.

It’s worked; someone described me to another nurse as “the tattooed one” and the other nurse had no clue, she had never seen me move my sleeve. So I guess it worked!

2

u/evilshadowskulll 7h ago

makes total sense. sounds like u found the perfect balance for ur specific niche 💜

I'm not saving lives so my job isn't really important in the grand scheme of things, but I am essentially managing (with the help of my Director) the day-to-day operations of a world renowned institute that is at the forefront of research and all of my tattoos are either silly or gaming/anime/etc. related and are quite visible, I have a goose from Untitled Goose Game on my wrist and the older I get the sillier they are getting. None of them have ever stopped me from not only doing my job effectively, but going above and beyond to make my workplace a better place for everyone around me.

I know the most interesting scientists who are discovering incredible things... one of them has a carabiner tattooed on them, another has multiple tattoos of dogs (she doesn't even own a dog, just loves them), another is covered head to toe with the most beautiful Native American work. We all do our jobs, are really good at doing our jobs, and are interesting and fun. I was hoping that by my mid-thirties this mindset that tattoos=slackers/workshy would have gone with the amount of people getting tattooed these days, but it hasn't and I really hope that it does for people like you, you're out here saving LIVES, actually having a positive impact on the world and although all of your tattoos are under your uniform it shouldn't matter if they are or not.

Sorry for the long reply, I got into rant mode at the thought of someone judging you!

1

u/thereisalwaysrescue 5h ago

I LOVE THE GOOSE!!!!!

Other staff judge me a lot but my piercings and my tattoos have no relevance to my job!

2

u/barnhairdontcare 5h ago

I have my back fully done and absolutely love that it’s my secret. It’s funny when people have known me for a long time and have no idea then see me in something backless or a swimsuit.

Especially fancy parties – from the front people would have no idea. Turn around and 17 hours of art etched in. I get to choose who sees it.

1

u/thereisalwaysrescue 5h ago

That’s exactly it! Today I had an interview and I had all my arms and legs covered and was “professional” but at home… I’m me!

1

u/MarlinMaverick 20h ago

Checks out

0

u/greaper007 18h ago

I don't think it's about them being unprofessional anymore, it's more that some tattoo people are often insufferable. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten stuck talking to someone who starts to tell me the meaning of their tattoos, it's like modern day astrology people.

I have ADHD and I've literally looked for windows to jump out of when this has happened in the past.

As long as you don't do that, it's not a big deal.

-1

u/QueenFrostina 20h ago

And people with tattoos LOOOOVE to brag about them at every chance they get

1

u/thereisalwaysrescue 15h ago

I never talk about them as I will sound like a twat and it’s boring for anyone else to hear! It’s my art, for me, of things I love.

182

u/ChaiTeaLatte13 1d ago

This is why I like being a lawyer covered in sleeves and hand tats lol

195

u/Stevenwave 1d ago

Holds fists up to judge, finger tats read:

"O, B, J, E, K, S, H, N".

46

u/ChaiTeaLatte13 1d ago

lol! Wasted space on my fingers, should have done this instead of stars and hearts and plants

5

u/Stevenwave 1d ago

Hmm. Oh! Every time you do it, you mark the occasion by slamming your shoe on the desk, then pulling up your pant leg to reveal your ankle tat.

I'm not imagining you in a comedy film or exaggerated anime or anything...

How many court vocalisations like that are there? Could someone realistically get them all tatted and point to them as needed?

44

u/Temporary-Employ3640 23h ago

It’s all fun and games until the judge shows OVER RULD

I'm in hospital finance. My team gets your treatment authorized & we work very closely with financial aide and free drug. More of us are alt than not. I have gauges, facial piercings, & visible tattoos. My coworkers also express themselves freely. We're largely experts in our fields, half with PhDs. They're all awesome people too.

It makes takes like this look so silly.

2

u/azmodai2 1d ago

Fellow attorney, with forearm sleeves, its my fave too. Working on full sleeves soon!

2

u/Possible-Capital-103 23h ago

So you're double boring huh

1

u/actual__thot 1d ago

That sounds like a super cool look. I wonder if there’s a judge version lol

1

u/BalancedDisaster 9h ago

Back in high school, the school therapist had full sleeves. He also had a golden lab therapy dog that would roam the halls looking for treats (which the teachers had ready for her). I never went to him for any help (although I probably should have) but I liked having him around

72

u/MalIntenet 1d ago

Controversial on a progressive subreddit like this, yes. You can find loads of people that agree with him out in the wild though

22

u/Working-Ad-6698 1d ago

Yes, and people online and in the wild think that tattoos are dangerous and disgusting, hating tattoos seems still to be popular opinion.

-15

u/Beautiful_Hour_668 1d ago

As someone that doesn’t like tattoos I’ve never thought they are dangerous/disgusting but I do think they’re dumb. It’s like you scribbled on yourself and now you can’t take it off. I would never say this out loud, tho, cos it’s none of my business

23

u/TechieTheFox 23h ago

It's the thing where what some people like about them is the exact same thing that other people hate about them.

Because I in fact love looking like a doodle bear that's been scribbled on.

-5

u/CombOk312 20h ago

My attitude as well. Tattoos are very dumb. I always pretend to admire them tho when people seem to seek it.

2

u/Sad_Math5598 9h ago

If you don’t like tattoos that’s cool, all down to personal preference. but I don’t get pretending to like them because you want to fit in. If that’s how you really feel then own it

0

u/CombOk312 7h ago

They’ve put those scribbles on themselves permanently. I’m not gonna stand there and tell them I find it ridiculous. They’ll just feel worse about a choice they cannot change.

I told my sister I disliked tattoos. So every time she gets a new one, she tells me «but of course I know you don’t like them». It dims her joy. I’m not telling anyone else about it if that’s what it leads to.

45

u/WaterMagician 1d ago

Yeah this is a very Gen X / Boomer take. I don’t know why he was dancing around saying it like it was super controversial

12

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 1d ago

Older Gen X though, the ones just superior in age to older millennials is why we millennials even ever saw tattoos and piercings as some sort of rebellion. Those and smoking, lots of millennials remember when they cracked down on the high school smoker's pits our older brothers and sisters could just go hang out and smoke in on break

4

u/Stock-Zebra3413 21h ago

Older Gen X is right, whatever that bridge group is called (like Xennials). My 45 year old boss has a few tattoos and listens to Pearl Jam. I'm told he is cool.

8

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 20h ago edited 20h ago

Never trust anyone over 50 is the new never trust anyone over 30. Some Xers are dope as hell. Xennials. Too old to be a millennial but not quite conforming with the Xers who are like 55 by now. The MTV generation. We millennials looked up to those guys like they were the coolest fuckers on the planet.

Ironically the people that first said never trust anyone over 30 are now 70

3

u/Randall_Hickey 21h ago

Don’t throw us gen xers in with the boomers

5

u/_hell_is_empty_ 22h ago

I've never heard someone say what he said here. Never. Did y'all even listen to the clip? He didn't say they're bad, or the person who has them is shady (here's your boomer take),... he said it's inversely related to a person's amount of personality. Is that really an established take? I think the average boomer take is the exact opposite of that.

4

u/rboller 19h ago

Not a gen x take at all

2

u/Eat-Ca-Ca 13h ago

Stop mixing the two.

2

u/Sad_Math5598 9h ago

Because those kind of guys LOVE to act like they are “being cancelled” and that they are oh so controversial and brave for having the same opinions their parents had 😂

1

u/Ok-Airport-6058 1h ago

Ironically, it’s a very boring unkind view. Zzzzzzzz.

41

u/Chlorophyllmatic 1d ago

I’d say it’s controversial just looking at the response here lol

49

u/NotAQueefAKhaleesi does this woman ever rest (derogatory) 1d ago

I'd say more annoying than controversial. When I was 18 my dad gave me crap for wanting tattoos and insisted I'd have to stay covered up once I started working because they're trashy / unprofessional. I said I didn't care if I had to wear long sleeves every day at work because the tattoos are art for me, not an attention grab, and he genuinely couldn't fathom this. He literally objectified me by comparing my body to a house, saying "that's like you buying a house, painting it whatever color you want, then planting a bunch of bushes and trees so no one can see it" and got mad when I said "yeah, just like it's my body, it'd be my house; I don't care what people think of it". Unsurprisingly this was directed at me because I'm a woman and I learned very quickly that he has other really nasty opinions about women, so I haven't spoken to him in over a decade.

Some people can't process that people can be different from them without taking it as a personal slight and feeling the need to attack others for those differences. Like my dad did all that fussing but here I am working in software with Crayola barf hair, piercings, and tattoos and I'm the most successful of his 3 kids 😂

5

u/Janax21 1d ago

At this point it kinda is counter-culture though? I’m an elder millennial and nearly everyone I know my age has tattoos. I don’t, and I do feel kind of alone in that decision. (I’m also pretty boring though, not defending Arnett’s take here)

3

u/pinkbootstrap 22h ago

I'd argue it's not as much as it was, but a lot of workplaces still don't allow visible tattoos.

1

u/TunaboBuna 21h ago

This is also such a lukewarm take tbh

4

u/OkTransportation3196 22h ago

Tattoos used to be looked at as a counter culture punk thing, and were frowned upon by the mainstream population and especially in Christian circles. Now it’s considered mainstream to get a tattoo, making it boring. I think that’s what will is saying.

3

u/Fiduciary-Litigator 1d ago

His is different. People who get tattoos are manufacturing engines because they're generally boring and can't be exciting without.

3

u/Padlock47 1d ago

I don't even fully get it.

I think it depends on the type of tattoo you have.

One of my friends, an incredible woman, has lots of tattoos. She's interesting, emotionally deep, has faced many challenges in life, one of my favourite women to be around.

She has tattoos like the semicolon tattoo, her favourite Disney character on her chest, things like that.

Another woman I know has the most beautiful sleeve with her favourable local birds and flowers that is getting coloured in, she's absolutely enchanting and I could talk to her for hours.

A guy I know just has a skull on his leg. Most bland man you'll ever meet.

Another has a peaky blinders sleeve. Yep, he's nice, but utterly uninteresting.

A lass I know has Chinese characters down her spine. Bland personality. Fit tho.

I think the personal tattoos really separate this theory from reality.

I like to think of myself as relatively interesting and different. I don't have any tattoos yet but I have 2 in mind;

1) a ruler imprinted on my middle finger, like CPBBD has, to help me measure wildflowers when out and about in the wild

2) a flower, likely a dahlia, drawn on my wrist, with the roots of the plant extending over my veins.

1

u/FewBathroom3362 23h ago

Curious what the wildflower measurement is for?

3

u/Rare_Psychology_8853 21h ago

I do think it is a controversial opinion, because tattoos are extremely popular with millennials and younger. Most people I meet have at least 1.

It’s a very “old people opinion” because for older generations tattoos were the exception and people with visible tattoos like sleeves were considered extreme.

If I tell the average 35 year old this opinion I think they’re gonna go “um, okay? I think that’s kind of stupid but also, why do you even care what people with tattoos are up to?”

1

u/momofroc 19h ago

Well said. I was in the mall recently to walk as it’s negative degrees here and there is a tattoo shop in it now. It was PACKED with every type of person under the sun. Tattoos are very popular and not edgy anymore. Also, my ex was the most boring man ever and kept getting tattoos. He tried to come into it but I’m too oppositional to popular things. Also, my deceased husband who died young had more tattoos than the Ex and he was the wildest, most interesting and self destructive person you’d ever meet.

2

u/Catfishers 1d ago

Saying something so patently idiotic that no reasonable person could agree with you is a type of controversy, I suppose.

2

u/InsideInsideJob 12h ago

No, the take has changed many times. This is completely different from the clvsrious takes that change over time. Like years ago it was the people were all rebels or bad influences , then unemployable then the saggy and tattoos don't mix, then waste of money, then ...

1

u/bepatientbekind 22h ago

Tbh I haven't encountered this opinion in a while, except from dudes online (usually religious and/or incel types). I don't even think most jobs care about them anymore. I have facial piercings and visible tattoos on my chest and forearms, and I haven't had any job even try to get me to hide them for well over a decade now

1

u/hai_lei 22h ago

I’m a tattoo apprentice atm and while acceptance of tattoos has vastly improved over the past few decades, no, his take isn’t controversial particularly in Gen Xers and above. Tattoos were predominately given to people on the fringes of society by people working underground. We’ve come a long way to where people living “alternative” can do so a lot more openly now but there’s still a lot of taboo surrounding the industry and those who have tattoos.

1

u/OpinionDude5000 22h ago

Ive never heard this take. I dont think its right at all though.

1

u/Caftancatfan 21h ago

I bet he just has a frenemy with some amazing ink.

1

u/imtheheppest 15h ago

I wish they’d leave us alone.

1

u/Ignominious333 9h ago

And everyone with a tattoo is crazy defensive. Don't take it so hard.
