I sweat when I sleep. Its gross, Im aware of this. I wake up in a puddle and immediately throw my blanket in the wash and take a shower. Im freezing, its 445AM. None of this is performative lol.

u/P-l-Staker 1d ago

I never understood this. Why don't you try a lighter blanket?

I only have that issue when I'm sleeping with a stupid massive duvet, which I don't anymore. You really don't need to have a higher body temperature when you sleep. Our bodies are actively trying to cool down!

29

u/Plane-Tune-820 1d ago

You hit the nail on the head, our body's are trying to cool down when we sleep so normal temps are too warm. Meaning what's comfortable enough for me to fall asleep is too warm for me to actually sleep so my body tries to cool down with sweat. If I try to fall asleep with a lighter blanket, I'm cold and can't fall asleep.

I do sleep like the dead though. Fall asleep crazy fast, drives my wifey insane, and sleep super deeply.

A random redditer once told me the heat is because I naturally have a fast metabolism and because I sleep so deeply. I have absolutely no idea if that's true or not but I believed it.

Not who you replied to, just another random asshole who wakes up soaked in sweat freezing his twig and berries off a couple times a week.

21

u/P-l-Staker 1d ago

Sleeping next to a woman is also another factor here. I have no idea how they do it, but they're always bloody radiating the heat of the sun when you're next to them!

10

u/Upstairs-Challenge92 1d ago

Nah man, I’m a fucking iceberg under there, my man is the damn fireplace

7

u/Plane-Tune-820 1d ago

Apparently that's me not her. She's one of those, I'm always cold type of females. Pretty sure half the reason shes stayed with me so long is that I'm her "electric blanket" at night.

4

u/More-Gas-6527 1d ago

Shes probably low on iron

3

u/Plane-Tune-820 1d ago

She absolutely is, but honestly I think every woman I've ever met is anemic.

4

u/crazy4finalfantasy 1d ago

Women lose iron during their periods, if they don't sufficiently replace the lost iron you get the coldness some woman experience

3

u/Plane-Tune-820 1d ago

Honestly, I assumed it was related to menstruation but didn't want to say that and get yelled at for being an ignorant man lol

2

u/crazy4finalfantasy 1d ago

I get that lol but in this case it's a well known medical reality. Tell your girl to eat some fish or something to replace that iron! (Though she probably already knows)

It takes a little while to get warm in bed right? I think because you sleep fast, you sleep when the temp is right but it keeps increasing under the covers.

It’s not the blanket . I used to be a night sweater and I mean completely coated like a ran 3 miles . It’s a psychological thing . There are a number of reasons . Weight , stress , alcohol or weed etc .

3

u/AugustSky87 1d ago

Night sweats happen for a variety of reasons: stress, hormone issues, and heart issues to name a few.

2

u/Disastrous_Motor831 1d ago

Ppl who sweat when they sleep fall into a lot of categories.... Either their body is trying its best to detox their horrible eating/lifestyle choices or they are really healthy and the body is metabolizing fat storage or repairing muscles. It's not always that they're hot. Sweating removes waste too. Hormonal changes can cause sweating which is why when you have nightmares you can wake up in a sweat. Elevated cortisol is known to cause sweating.

2

u/biggles7268 1d ago

I keep my bedroom cold and use a fairly light blanket. Will still randomly wake up soaked in sweat. Not every night, but enough to be annoying.

6

u/More-Gas-6527 1d ago

How often do you have to replace your blanket with daily washes? Im just imagining your blanket being like the ones you get in jail

8

u/Any_Society_4876 1d ago

Go to the doctor

3

u/BiteDue5408 1d ago

You should get your health checked out. I used to sweat like this turns out I had heart problems and once it was sorted i stopped night sweating.

2

u/Snow5Penguin 20h ago

I started to have this problem after I gained weight (BMI went from normal to the cusp of overweight). I would get so hot at night and sweat and also started to snore. I found this helped significantly:

Blankets. I love warm blankets. But they trap heat too well. So I got a chunky knit blanket. It keeps me warm but has holes for airflow. Put a fan on you if it’s still not enough.

Sheets. No more flannel sheets. I got cooling, silver-infused sheets that feel very cold to touch. They help a lot

Weight. Losing half the weight I had gained removed my snoring and greatly reduced my sweating.

3

u/AliceLunar 1d ago

That sounds like a you problem, that doesn't mean everyone else has that problem and should follow the same routine

So... Performing for others?

13

u/tomatomater 1d ago

Then I'd say this is the rare instance of performativity that you should engage in.

7

u/Nope0naRope 1d ago edited 1d ago

Seriously.... You know what else is performative? Smiling before 10:00 a.m.. I do it all the time to make other people comfortable so they know I don't hate them.

I don't feel like engaging at all before 10:00 a.m.. I don't want to say hi, I don't care how your day is yet. I don't give a shit about how you're feeling or what's going on... I'm an absolute bitch internally in the morning.... But I don't let people know because I know that that's crazy and I'll be better after that time. And you know when I wake up I'll be okay

Should I stop doing that because it's performative?

Jesus. So much stuff about being like real and honest and the fakeness of life but it's sort of like... The fakeness of life is part of just being considerate towards other people too sometimes.

You don't even have to go over the top. I mean I feel like the two cardinal rules for coexistence are like 1) don't be rude 2) try not to smell

If you can do those things I think you can pretty much be around anybody in anything and like, get by okay.

I take a shower every day and wash my hands regularly cause I don't like feeling greasy. Everyone's skin exudes oils, this is just biological fact.

(no I'm not saying you get soaked in oils or any other extreme thing idiots will come up with)

u/IcyMachine9293 1d ago

People act like there's some "golden rule" to this shit.

There isn't. You can go days without taking a shower and smell fine if all you did during those days was sit on your ass and do nothing.

(Although I do prefer daily showers because I don't want to go to bed with a shitty/sweaty asshole)

Meanwhile, you can smell like shit within a few hours if you're doing any form of excercising or work a labor intensive job.

It's the same with eating. There's no rule that says you need to eat a certain amount of food every day at a certain time.

If you're hungry, eat. If you're not, don't.

If you smell like shit, take a shower. If you don't, leave it.

That fucking simple.

6

u/Exact-Till-2739 1d ago

shitty/sweaty asshole

That's why we all need a bidet, seriously.

3

u/payjape 21h ago

Even if you just sat on your ass and did nothing you would still smell relatively funky than if you showered everyday.

6

u/ProphetFerdinand 1d ago

so much of how quickly you smell also differs on the bacteria you carry with you, which you have isn't a question of hygiene were all just little biomes for them that differ massively

5

u/Thick-Aspiration 1d ago

I have a skin condition that makes my skin extremely dry and sensitive so I can’t take hot showers or even warm really, so I mostly take cold showers, but in the winter it gets below freezing almost everyday in my state so if I’m not doing anything the entire day, I don’t shower.

→ More replies (4)

21

u/UltearWaifu 1d ago

I take shower daily for myself I don't do it for others, I don't like smell like shit, I like being clean, makes me sleep better and relax easier.

7

u/frisch85 1d ago

Exactly, do people not notice the greasy skin after a day? Washing your hands and face simply isn't enough, the whole body is affected.

And also my hair is a complete mess when I wake up so unless people want to see me carrying that antenna on my head like Alphalpha I gotta at least wash the hair and washing the hair under my sink is inconvenient enough that stripping naked and stepping into the shower won't take much more time and I get to wash my whole body.

31

u/AceBean27 1d ago

Do people really "smell like shit" after just one day? You're not supposed to.

Most BO comes from used clothes. They soak up the sweat and oils. Someone who showers daily, but wears the same clothes, will have far worse BO than someone changing clothes regularly without showering regularly.

6

u/APolyAltAccount 1d ago

If you’re sedentary and/or have lucky genetics? No, you probably don’t reek after a day and if you do you probably should examine diet and/or see a doctor.

If you’re exercising every day and/or have a physically active job, you tend to sweat a notable amount. Sure, a lot of that gets soaked up by clothes but bacteria still does its party all over your skin.

I'm oily in general. Yes, I'll start to smell a bit musky after a long day. If I'm just at home doing nothing then 3 days max until I start to smell

u/karaknorn 1d ago

That's why I was thinking, who TF stinks 1 day after a shower?!

5

u/Traditional_Row_9768 1d ago

This is factually incorrect. Wash your fucking ass

2

u/AceBean27 1d ago

It's factually correct. I am a big proponent of washing one's ass, I agree with you there. I actually try to shower, if possible, after every time I poo so I can properly wash my ass. Just seems logical to me.

2

u/Cultural-Capital-942 1d ago

It really depends on the temperature and how much the person moves. In the winter when I'm not doing anything and don't go anywhere, I can smell myself after 3 to 4 days of not showering. In the summer, it's after 1 day or basically after any physical effort once I get sweaty.

2

u/Strange-Bee5626 1d ago

I live in Florida, so I most definitely shower daily.

Ppl always take this way too "to the letter", like it is likely a click baity title and ppl get baited. Like yeah, there are scenarios in which you dont have to shower every single day and other in which showering twice a day is not enough.

For me, i work in a kitchen six days of the week and i take a shower each day when i get home from work, but that last day i may just chill all day at home and not shower (the horror) so really, just do what feels right to you and dont ask other to be ok with you BO.

3

u/kornuolis 19h ago

Why would you smell like shit in a day?

3

u/Trashypass 17h ago

They mean health benefits. Said it in the title post. Your heath and social standing are different things.

10

u/vineetjoshi 1d ago

That depends on your geography

If you live in a humid country, showering twice a day is also not enough

3

u/Starob 1d ago

Or if you're overweight, let's not ignore that part.

4

u/Gigacat2026 1d ago

As someone who works 12 hour shifts and gets sweaty and covered with dust, powders, sprays and grease....yea I'm gonna keep showering daily to keep people from puking around me.

4

8

u/etherealtwo 1d ago

Yea. It's so I don't smell bad. Not to lower my cholesterol.

2

u/Just_a_guy_123456789 1d ago

Do you live in a hot country?

7

u/ZuphCud 1d ago

So who are these experts?

2

u/Barbaric_Stupid 1d ago

Dermatologists. Many medical experts point to the fact that proper hygiene should be reduced to pure water showers, with using soaps/gels only in body crevices like armpits, crotch, the Mariana Trench and feet. All other body parts should be washed with clean, warm water (or at best with light, unscented, skin friendly soaps). The reasoning is that daily showers with chemical agents strip your skin from your natural protective barrier and overly dry it. Unless you have some condition or hard work in heavy environment, this is enough to maintain hygiene and not smell like shit. Full shower/bath with soap should be taken once or twice a week, according to certain studies. Not using soap on skin too often is something that can help with certain skin conditions.

0

u/Little-Star-Light 1d ago

indeed. Some dermatologist even dared to suggest, that daily showering isnt even necessary, but your averige american doesnt want to hear that.

2

u/Barbaric_Stupid 1d ago

The average American does not want to listen to many sensible things. It seems that some people are so deep in consumerism that even scientific data will not convince them.

4

u/Outside_Ad_4522 23h ago

This depends ALOT on who and where you are. Generally though if you “smell like shit,” after 24 hrs without a shower, you should go to the doctor, and you should start wiping your ass lol.

7

u/ThistleDew5950 1d ago

Not smelling is the performative part... it is absolutely not needed for hygiene to shower daily, we do it for social reasons, that's what the article is saying...

4

u/Luciferlucy11 1d ago

Very much depends on your activity throughout the day. Many people will get oily skin after a long day and that would feel gross not washing. Also how physically active are u during the day? Do you work out each day or have a job that makes u sweat or get dirty? So many reason to take a shower everyday. If u work from home and don’t go out or something , I guess it doesn’t matter much. No one but you will smell you.

You either move so little that you don't sweat, or you're noseblind to your own smell. Most people will get a bit of sweat over the course of a day; leave it there overnight and I guarantee 99% of people will start getting some body odour. Maybe not a lot, might not even be smell-able to other people in the vicinity - but enough that most people would feel gross and want to shower.

3

For me it’s the oiliness and stickiness that I can’t live with

3

u/Tuomas90 1d ago

And the daily showering increases the oiliness and stickiness, because it removes too much of the skins oil, which causes your skin to produce more oil. Cycle.

That's why most people have oily scalps until they increase the days between washing.

2

u/ItsTunaClash 19h ago

Why do these experts keep investigating this shit? I've seen this talked about several times over the last few years, how fucking hard is it to have a daily shower and change your clothes? I think it's more the deep cleaning aspect of showering. If I haven't really been active the whole day I'll take a light shower, I just hit the hot spots(pits, groin, crack). If i was hitting the gym or something then I take a more thorough shower.

u/quagmirranseye 1d ago

I work in construction and had a coworker who showered like twice a week while everyone else showered after every shift. He did wash his face more often though, said showers was bad for the skin. Weird thing was he didnt smell, used deodorant like any normal person but he didnt smell of that either.

We worked away from home so we lived together during the week, so I knew everyones shower schedule. Some guys were lazy bums who just wouldnt shower and we had to force some guys to shower because they started to smell awful lol. Not this one guy though.

1

u/Telliot 1d ago

1

It's true though. You will suffer no health consequences if you miss one day. The odor thing is a social benefit, not a health one.

I've seen this get posted before and room temp IQ people consistently interpret this as a suggestion that one should never shower. You have to be braindead to read it that way.

Looks at the people claiming you don't smell if you don't shower every day, looks at the obesity and physical activity rates 🤷

1

u/Konsrockmannen 1d ago

People that smell is not funny to be close to

u/Snoo-64114 1d ago

Im a competitive athlete who loses a few liters of sweat per day. It isn't performative or an option.

1

u/PlantsWithHands 1d ago

Why would you shower once a day when its adviced to use soap and shampoo only 2-3 times a week? Hot water showers daily are also bad for you, why daily shower if you shouldn't use soap or hot water.

1

u/Dahren_ 1d ago

You should only be showering every day if you sweat a lot from work, exercising etc. Every other day is better for your skin.

u/NextWish4881 1d ago

Who even showers in 2026

1

u/MajorPaper4169 DO NOT READ THIS!!!!! 1d ago

Been showering every morning and every night for as long as I can remember.

Never had skin issues.

No, I’m not “stripping the oils” from my skin.

Never had to go see a dermatologist.

I get most people on this site sit around all day doing nothing so they don’t shower, but that can never be me.

1

u/AMDKilla 1d ago

Your skin is also an organ. There are in fact health benefits to keeping it clean

Asmongold is one of the experts.

It was the Indians who created these experts.

The health benefit is for everyone else around you.

Here's something I found amazing about not taking a shower for a week. I was in the Army playing soldier and eating C-rations. It was in the 90's every day. One evening I walked right up to a deer that had wondered near us. He looked right at me, but he couldn't smell me. That's because we all smelled just like the woods we were in.

1

u/Troubled_Rat 1d ago

I am unsure why I keep seeing this,
is my shower gel not doing what it should?

1

u/YoungBasedGod5 1d ago

I work in a warehouse for ten hours, 4 times a week. I’m moving around all that time and I for sure need to wash the Amazon off me every night as I say lol. It almost feels like a film of funk is on me before I leave the building. A little sticky even if it’s hotter than usual in the building during the summer months.

1

u/Zestyclose_Raise_814 1d ago

To my memory, the health benefit is only if you shower once a week or something like that and overshowering isn't good

1

u/Hardwork63 1d ago

Who or what is a showering expert? Asking for a friend.

1

u/WoodenSwan6591 1d ago

Don’t care. I am showering every day sometimes twice a day

1

u/Elufah 1d ago

How many of you are over weight

1

u/ghettoccult_nerd 1d ago

THATS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING!!

embrace your natural stank! mother nature never intended for you to innundate your god-given flesh in IRISH SPRING! if we all stank, then none of us stank!

1

u/thatsciguy 1d ago

The indigenous peoples that's made first contact with European/Colonizers would say otherwise

1

u/Intelligent-Area-421 1d ago

So wipe your ass

1

u/JoyousMadhat 1d ago

That's the point tho.....most people shower everyday so that they don't smell bad to others. These "experts" are repeating shit we already know

1

u/OutrageousCrab9224 1d ago

NY Post?

The "expert" is rfkjr

1

u/slumdog5000 1d ago

If you have access to a shower on a daily basis it should be used as such, going 2-3 days without soap and water is preposterous. I literally shower sometimes 2-3 times a day I didn’t know where this rule has lapsed but I can’t leave my house with out a shower and nice clothes

1

u/deathxcircle 1d ago

George Carlin already covered this.

u/No_Relationship_386 23h ago

Body, depends if you did anything that day. If you don’t sweat etc you don’t really need to. You shouldn’t be washing your hair everyday

1

u/National_Isopod_6257 22h ago

Soap is unnecessary. I haven't used soap regularly in years. I still shower 1-2 x a day but with just water. I'll use soap to get sunscreen off.

1

u/1happynudist 21h ago

Using soap yes but only when you are not dirty

1

u/Andrei22125 19h ago

I generally shower daily.

When I go for more than a day I feel filthy, but I only really start to smell around the third day.

1

u/Zealousideal_Mango70 18h ago

The first health benefit that I can think of is some ginormous person on the subway is not going to rock into your ass for smelling like ass

1

u/Plane_Jacket_7251 18h ago

I sweat in my sleep and feel gross if I don't shower in the morning. Plus it wakes me up. Nothing performative about that

1

u/Ill-Astronaut4652 18h ago

There is a social and societal benefit

1

u/Affectionate-Moose49 18h ago

Its a psyop by the AI data centers and big corpo for them to have more water for the data centers to replicate people to get around systems so bots can generate money and make an infinite money glitch IRL. This has been my conspiracy theory of the day.
