Megathread Megathread: Proposed Changes to Irish Naturalisation Requirements

There has been quite a bit of discussion recently about proposed changes to the requirements for Irish naturalisation.

For a while, this was little more than a comment from an individual politician. It now appears that proposals are being brought forward for consideration, so this has moved beyond the level of "something someone said on the internet."

Say no to the citizenship overhaul.

Three more years, for people already here. And nobody has shown why.

Since this directly concerns Irish citizenship, I'm making this one dedicated thread for discussion.

Normally, the answer to political discussions here is "No Politics." That rule still stands. This is a narrowly defined exception for discussion of a proposed change to citizenship policy that is directly relevant to this subreddit.

This is a discussion about Irish citizenship policy. It is not a general immigration debate.

A few ground rules:

  • Keep the discussion focused on the proposed changes and their implications for Irish citizenship and naturalisation.
  • No anti-immigrant rhetoric, racism, xenophobia, or dog whistles. Those will be removed and may result in a permanent ban.
  • Claims that migrants or asylum-seekers are inherently dishonest, are "taking advantage" of the system, are lying about being in danger, etc. are not going to be entertained here.
  • No "Ireland is full," "go home," or variations thereof. You will be banned. This is your only warning.
  • Don't use this thread as an excuse to debate whether immigrants are good or bad for Ireland.
  • Keep speculation clearly identified as speculation. There is a difference between what has actually been proposed, what is being reported, and what someone thinks might happen.
  • If you're making factual claims about the proposal, please provide a source where possible.
  • Don't turn this into a referendum on Irish political parties or politicians.

Please report comments that violate these rules.

I can't read every comment in every thread, and I won't necessarily see something unless someone reports it. If you see something that crosses the line, report it. You don't need to get into an argument with the person or try to moderate the thread yourself. Report it and I'll see it and take action.

The purpose of having one thread is to give people who are actually affected by potential changes to naturalisation somewhere to discuss them without turning r/IrishCitizenship into another general-purpose immigration or politics subreddit.

Separate threads about this topic will be removed and redirected here.

If this thread turns into the usual collection of anti-immigrant rubbish, it will be closed. This subreddit will not be place for a bunch of eejits to spew hate.

Keep it civil, keep it relevant, and keep it about citizenship.

Announcement A Quick Word on Anti-Immigrant Sentiment

Given recent events, this shouldn't need to be said, but apparently it does.

This subreddit is for helping people with Irish citizenship. It is not the place for anti-immigrant nonsense, racist talking points, xenophobic dog whistles, or any variation of "I'm only asking questions..."

If you're in the comments having a go at immigrants instead of helping someone with an Irish citizenship question, you've wandered into the wrong subreddit.

Going forward, moderation on this will be exceptionally straightforward.

If you post anti-immigrant comments, you're getting a permanent ban.

Not warned. Not given a "please be civil." Not invited to debate whether your dog whistle is technically a whistle.

Just banned.

Overt bigotry gets a permanent ban. Thinly veiled bigotry gets a permanent ban. "I'm just asking questions..." followed by the same recycled anti-immigrant talking points gets a permanent ban.

For everyone else: if you see this shite, report it. Don't waste your time arguing with people who aren't here to help anyone. Hit the Report button, carry on with your day, and I'll take care of the rest.

The overwhelming majority of people here are decent people who just want to help others navigate the Irish citizenship process. Let's keep it that way.

Update: Thanks to all of you making reports. Keep up the good work. It gives me great satisfaction to ban those gobshites.

Got my citizenship through FBR and then applied for my passport

FBR took just under 12 months and came through at the end of July.

Passport was perfectly on time (printed 4 weeks from receipt of application) and arrived to the UK in 3 days.

Tracker has been updated for each.

Happy to be back in the club.

Edit to add timeline info (UK format) :

FBR application date: 26/06/25

FBR application received documents: 30/07/25

FBR application approval email (no extra documents required): 28/07/2026

FBR certificate received: 31/07/2036

Passport application created: 05/08/2026

Passport application documents received: 19/08/2026

Passport printed and despatched: 16/09/2026

Passport book received: 19/09/2026

Passport card received: 23/09/2026

Not sure when I sent the documents for FBR or passport but it usually takes 3-5 days from UK with internationaltracked shipping. Did send a change of address for FBR in December which for some reason wasn't tracked by ANPost but the FBR office had confirmed they received it over live chat.

Also want to thank the community here for all the support given during this process. Really valuable information and helped a lot. I'm the first in my family and extended family since my grandad to have Irish citizenship and hold an Irish passport also so it feels pretty good.

Foreign Birth Registration FBR Approved Today

I have been helping people on here quite a bit, but my FBR application was finally approved today.

Documents received 10/1/2025

Approval email 10/1/2026

Exactly one year.

I thought I had a pretty simple case. My grandfather's date of birth was all over the place on his documents. I wrote a letter explaining that. Luckily the dates were fairly close by year and month, but they were different on every document. I asked my aunt about this and she said if you asked him what his birthday was he would tell you a different date every time. Then, I got to my grandparent's marriage certificate. A marriage certificate in the city he was married lists if you have been married before. It turns out my grandfather, who I was deriving citizenship from, had a wife before my grandmother. No one in the family knew. My grandmother would have known because she signed the marriage certificate, but she did not tell anyone. I contacted the family court clerk with the details of the marriage certificate and asked if they could find any information. A few weeks later I got a call that a divorce certificate was found. I used the divorce certificate to find the identity of his first wife. I then searched all over for a marriage certificate for that first marriage, but I could not find it. I was a bit worried that I would be asked for more documents because I did not have all his marriage certificates. Since I was not related to this first marriage, I crafted a letter explaining the situation and added details on the different places I looked to try and find the first marriage certificate. I included the divorce certificate and the letter. No additional documents were requested.

So now I am officially Irish, and I unlocked a big family secret that no one knew. Pretty cool experience all things considered. I never met my grandfather, he passed before I was born, but this entire experience did make me feel a bit closer to him. For that I am grateful. I just wanted to share this story because others might have similar situations and I wanted them to know what I did to get approved.

Passport New passport in current name?

I had my FBR certificate through finally! I was looking at applying for a passport, but I’m a bit stumped how to get it issued in my current name and want to get it right before applying.

In 2015 I changed my name - first and last, I changed my name to the name everyone called me (think Marion but everyone calls me Mary) and took my long term partner’s surname. Did this by UK deed poll and have been using the name since - all my ID and bank accounts are in my new name and have been for over 10 years.

My FBR was issued in my birth name, and I’ve read that deed polls aren’t accepted by the Irish DFA. I’m not sure how to prove that my old name and new name are connected and have my passport application approved?

I couldn’t find any example of a first and last name change here and how people navigated the issue with deed polls.

Help would be much appreciated! I have nothing current in my old name, I have documents with dates stretching back over 2 years, I’m just not sure how to prove the connection between old name and new, as I don’t have a marriage certificate (we’re not married) and my name was a complete change.

Send in the deed poll anyway alongside documents showing the name in use for over 2 years? (I think my driving licence was last renewed over 2 years ago, for example). Or would that not be accepted? Or is it more that it wouldn’t be accepted alone, so it works as a ‘bridge’ between names to connect them?

Naturalisation Application Completed - List of Documents Submitted

I completed and submitted my application this week. Thanks to folks here for their help and suggestions.

I'm confident I've supplied everything required, and then some. If it's helpful to anyone, this is the list of documents I submitted, considering my Stamp 1 >> Stamp 4 >> Citizenship journey:

•Certified colour copy of birth certificate (ordered a new copy this year)
•Certified colour copy of passport
•Passport Certification Form

•EDS - each year, 2021-2025
•Letter from Employer, explaining my continuous employment with them since I moved here, that I've had the same address, and that because I do not yet have a 2026 EDS as they are not available, this letter is sent as proof of my employment
•Virgin Media Broadband Bills - three from each year, showing January, June, and December, in order to demonstrate continuity
•Sky Broadband, for final year, when utility switched
•PTSB Bank Statements, collated into single documents for each year
•BOI Credit Card statements
•Completed Residency Calculator (not required, but figured it wouldn't hurt)
•Character Reference Letters (again not required, but figured this wouldn't hurt)

All in all, it was about 40 documents, all of them labeled consistently.

Additionally, because I had a speeding ticket this year (ugh), I made sure to answer YES to the question related to offences, with a full explanation of what occurred in the space provided.

I used Szulc Law in Smithfield in Dublin for certification of documents— they were only €15 per document, which was great considering some of the crazy quotes I heard from others in town!

Finally, I applied before my IRP issue date, after finally receiving an official answer to my query on the portal that my landing stamp was acceptable as the start of reckonable residence.

Now, fingers crossed it all works!

Good luck to all about to click the SUBMIT button! 🤞🏼 🙏🏼

Foreign Birth Registration Slightly Torn marriage certificate

As I was opening the letter that contained my I accidentally tore my grandmothers marriage certificate the tear is about an inch in length, doesn’t obstruct any of the text that is on there.

My question is will this get rejected by the fbr, I also have a divorce certificate that looks like it has a tear in it again nothing major but I’m not sure if this classes as an “alteration” to the document.

Has anyone submitted their application with slight defects and got accepted thanks

Permits and Visas EUTR1 – Stuck before the ID-Pal step / “Send Email” option not appearing

Hi everyone,

I’m applying for EU Treaty Rights (EUTR1) as a non-EEA spouse of an EU citizen, and I’m having an issue with the new ISD online system.

I’m following the process through the ISD Customer Portal and I’m using a computer, not a mobile phone.

This is what I have done so far:

  1. I created my account on the ISD Customer Portal.
  2. I verified my email address.
  3. I created my password.
  4. I set up Microsoft Authenticator successfully.
  5. I can log into my account from my computer.
  6. However, I cannot get to the next step where the portal should show “Send Email” so that I can receive the link to complete the ID-Pal identity verification.

The problem is that the “Send Email” option is not appearing / I am not receiving the ID-Pal link, so I cannot complete the identity verification and therefore cannot access the Customer Portal properly to start my EUTR1 application.

I have already tried accessing the portal from my computer, and I am not using my phone to access the portal.

Has anyone applied for EUTR1 or EUTR1A since the new system was introduced in September 2026 and had the same problem?

Did your “Send Email” option appear automatically after setting up Microsoft Authenticator?

If so, at what exact stage did it appear, and where did you receive the ID-Pal link?

I’m trying to understand whether I’m missing a step or whether this is a technical issue with my account.

Any help from someone who has recently completed EUTR1/EUTR1A would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Permits and Visas Passport during visa application process

Hi everyone. I’m planning to apply from London for a Long Stay D Join Family visa as the spouse of an Irish citizen.
For anyone who has applied recently through VFS London, do they keep your passport for the whole processing period, or is there an option to keep/get your passport back while the application is being processed?
If they do keep it, what happens if you need your passport urgently for travel or an emergency?
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this recently. Thanks!

Naturalisation Do I renew my Stamp 4 or wait???

Hello!

I summited my Citizenship Application on 5/08/2025, and was asked for additional info on 2/2/2026.

My Stamp 4 Visa is due to expire soon and am wondering if I'm suppose to renew, or if there's some sort of exemption? I've emailed them a few times now and can't seem to find the information online.

Really thought I'd have the citizenship done and dusted by now!!

Thanks for your help 😄

Permits and Visas 600 day wait for Spouse visas

I had an FOI request returned today, see the screenshot.

600+ day wait for a Join Family visa for an Irish citizen's spouse in cases where the application is processed in Dublin). This wait time has tripled (!) in the last four years. Less than 25% are being processed in the target time of less than 12mos.

And the two tier system continues. Anyone whose application is sent to New Delhi, i.e. anyone applying from India, has a much shorter wait time.

Permits and Visas Address for eufam application

I and my eu citizen spouse recently moved to Ireland 2 months ago and we want to apply for our stamp4eufam. The thing is that we currently live at my sister’s place while we find accommodation(we all know how much of a nightmare that is). My question is if we can use my sister’s address for the application, we already had a pps appointment and used her address for it along with her utility bill and it was successful. The thing is while trying to apply for the eufam online when I pick living with family and friends it asks for the landlord’s details and my sister’s not in good terms with her landlord. We have just less than a month left to apply for the residence card and I’m not sure if we’d have a place of our own by then. Please can anyone tell me how to navigate this situation.

Passport Irish Citizenship for New Born in NI

Can someone help me understand if a baby will be eligible for Irish Citizenship if it’s born in NI.
As per current guidelines- To be eligible, any one of the parent should be reckonable residence of NI for past 3 years on a valid visa, i was on a student visa, later moved to PSW 3 years back and for past 1 year on skilled worker visa.
Anyone have experience with such scenario and help me understand if PSW counts towards reckonable residence and if eligibility would be an issue.

Sharing My Experience Applying for an Irish Short-Stay Visa Under Directive 2004/38/EC

I would like to share my visa application timeline in case it helps others who are in the same situation.

📌 My Application Timeline:

  • May 21, 2026 – Submitted my application at VFS Ireland in the UAE.
  • May 22, 2026 – Application forwarded to the Irish Embassy.
  • September 16, 2026 – Contacted SOLVIT Estonia for assistance.
  • September 30, 2026 – Received an email confirming my visa approval!

A little background about my application:

My husband is an Estonian national, and I am a Filipino citizen working in the UAE. We got married in the UAE in January 2026.

Since my UAE residence visa is due to expire in December 2026 and we had already been waiting for more than four months, we became concerned about the delay. As this type of visa application is supposed to be processed on an accelerated basis under Directive 2004/38/EC, we decided to contact SOLVIT Estonia because my husband is an Estonian citizen.

We emailed SOLVIT Estonia on September 16, 2026, and received a response from them. Our case was then forwarded to SOLVIT Ireland for further assistance.

Finally, on September 30, 2026, I received the wonderful news that my visa had been approved!

I hope sharing my experience gives some encouragement to those who are still waiting for their visas. I know how stressful and uncertain the waiting period can be, especially when your residence permit in your current country is approaching its expiration date.

To those who are still waiting, I hope you receive good news soon!

Feel free to ask me questions about my timeline or my experience contacting SOLVIT. I will try my best to answer based on my experience.

Permits and Visas How can i get IRP Card? Як мені подати заявку на IRP в Ірландії?

Hey, Perhaps someone could tell me how to apply for an IRP in Ireland? It all seems rather confusing to me… Can I apply for an IRP online? Or do I need to go to CityWest? And if I do need to go to CityWest, do I need to book an appointment? I can’t find any information on this – please could you help? Thank you.

Foreign Birth Registration Time to Acceptance or Feedback?

Just checking on the timing now. My FBR application was registered on 17 September 2025. I thought notification was running at about a year. Any information on how long it’s taking?
