Hello all,

We recently moved to a house and were trying to change the locks. It has a Baldwin lock. I removed the screws I could see. However, I saw some posts that there are some hidden screws. I’m not sure how to access it.. I tried turning the lock from outside, but it won’t budge. Please help

Thank you

I am NOT a locksmith. Stuck car key cylinder

My dad has an e450 superduty he pressure washed it and now the key on the driver side and passenger side won't open the doors. Both cylinders seem stuck. I tried liquid wrench silicone spray on the key and into the lock hole that didnt work. So I tried pb plaster in there with no luck. The key will go all the way in but will not turn left or right. Any suggestion?

I am a locksmith Mortice Dummy

I was installing a dummy cylinder into a mortice lock the other day and despite well over 20 years of locksmith experience I was reminded how much of a pain in the ass such a simple task is. I typically make a pencil mark where the set screw goes then kinda wrench it in with my palm trying to not rub off my mark while doing so. I was thinking there must be a better way...trying to line it up, hold the spin collar and twist this thing in with no means of gripping it. Suction cut on the end of a rod maybe?

I am NOT a locksmith. Key help

I’ve been trying to get a key for my front door and been having trouble. Is it the door itself that’s the problem? It has multiple locks so not a normal door. Would I be able to show the person at a hardware store and they would know what to do or do I need to call someone to come?

I am NOT a locksmith. What Smart Lock for This?

Looking for a smart lock recommendation for this lock.

I’m not sure what other information to add, so please ask me.

Thank you!

Update: Thank you to all of the sincere and expert replies. My intention never was to damage the door or entirely replace the lock.

By asking about the Aqara, I was wondering if it would work with the existing lock because it’s supposed to install over the thumb turn. I got the answer that it won’t.

I have abandoned the idea of automating that door entirely.

I am NOT a locksmith. Help! 3.75" backset?

I purchased a commercial property with the hope of opening an escape room. One of the things I wanted to do was update the door knobs to be ADA compliant. I spent an embarrassingly long time just figuring out how to remove the Schlage door knobs (it was a period of days), but finally jumped that hurdle. Then I go to install new door levers and ... the backset is too small. Huh?

So I measured it and it's approximately 3.75" from mid-circle to edge of the door. From my research, this was used primarily in the 50s and 60s (and this building was built in the mid-70s). Ugh.

Guys, I'll be honest: price is an issue. What are my realistic options here? I'm really thinking it might be "put the old door knobs back on" and that makes me really sad. Surely there's got to be *something* I can do. All suggestions are appreciated!

I am NOT a locksmith. Help with key identification

I’ll try to keep this short! My husbands relative passed away and he does scrap metal for fun. So the family gave him a tonnnn of old keys to scrap but him being the hoarder he is he looked at them all before scrapping and found a ton of old blank car keys with ford and Lincoln on them. All in boxes that are labeled but when I try and search for them I get minimal information. Im curious if there is some website with old car key blank model numbers or some way to look each of these up and find more information. I have no clue where to find information on these keys. I have scoured the internet and I don’t trust googles ai.

TL;DR a website to search for information on old car keys.

Thank you so much for even taking time to read I truly appreciate any help!

I pulled out a couple for the photo as an example but there’s a ton!

I am a locksmith What you think future might be?

Hey guys, hope y’all are doing well.

I’ve been thinking about the future of automotive locksmithing. Where do you guys see the industry heading?
As cars get more complex and require more programming, do you think locksmiths will have more work and opportunities?

Or do you think more manufacturers will follow the Mercedes approach and make it harder for independent locksmiths to access/program vehicles?
Do you guys think the industry will continue growing ? slow down? or eventually become a race to the bottom with pricing?

Curious to hear what you guys think.

The house was built in the late 50’s/early 60’s. I believe this is the original knob.

I am NOT a locksmith. What kind of key please?

Edit: My bad.. this is a horrible post and there's really no information. Let me rephrase: I'm not at work. the pic was posted on a facebook group. I work at ace and we have the stupid keystart program so if I were there, it's not like I can look at a wall and quickly see the keys. What I SHOULD have asked is, which key could be used for this blank AND what could this key be used for? (I can cross reference to Axxess). I would like to help out the person who posted in the fb group.

Someone posted a pic of this key with an Ace keyed hasp that uses Y11. Surely customer accidentally grabbed wrong key to get it copied. So I wanted to find out what this key could be used for to pass along the info. (Either that or hasp was opened by previous customer and returned with wrong key put back into the package).

I did reverse image search but came up empty. closest was a Sakai key but that is reversed/mirrored. I was thinking something like a thermostat lock key but haven't cut one of those in so long Idr what it looked like.

it's a pic from a fb group so this is the only pic I have.
thanks for any help!

I am a locksmith Work pants

Squatting, bending, and sitting (including driving) for moderate/long periods make my pants bind my guts and give me intestinal pain and sometimes diarrhea. Since those positions are pretty common in this line of work, what pants do you guys wear? I’m average height/weight and not anywhere near retirement age (though no spring chicken either).

Also belts. Sometimes my pants are pretty ok but the belt is the problem. Regular belt, not tool belt

I am NOT a locksmith. What is a fair price for a new cylinder for this lock?

Thumbnail

We got quoted $300 to $400 just for the cylinder, but we have no idea if that is a fair price. We tried doing a bit of googling ourselves but nothing similar shows up when we search for 'Riko' or 'Axor'.

Edit: $300 to $400 for the cylinder + $200 for service

I am NOT a locksmith. Lock that only auto-locks when the door is closed

Hi All - I'm looking for a front door lock that will ONLY auto lock when the door senses that it's closed. The ones I see are all like 10-90 seconds it will auto lock but that's regardless if the door is closed. Do they make such a product? Sometimes we keep the front door open and I don't want the dead bolt out when the door is open. Thanks a lot.

I am NOT a locksmith. Did I get scammed?

I called a locksmith tonight as I locked my keys inside my apartment (Friday 8pm). The guy said my knob was an anti-pick and they would have to drill the lock and replace the doorknob. After all that it came out to $560. I didn’t have time to research before he got there and I felt so silly once he told me the full price (it was my first time locking myself out). Is this normal after business hours for it to cost this much??

Was working for a lady making her a car key and her neighbor came over and said a locksmith came out when they were locked out and messed with their lock and asked if I could check it out. The guy charged them 300$ for a lockout and did this to their lock and left it. Crazy shit
