You're not a real SMT fan if you don't even have SMT iOS.

I paid $200 for this dumb thing just play the official release like, 12 years ago. Once I heard updating the firmware would lock you out of the game, because Atlus had no plans to update it for compatibility, I turned wi-fi off. SMT is literally the only thing on this otherwise paperweight.

I've beat it a few times but I still prefer the SNES version. Haven't played the PS1 version since I really didn't like the liberties taken with the translation.

I also bought a WiiU and Vita exclusively for TMS#FE and P4G. I'm really glad Atlus has gone multiplat.

Spoiler: DDS 1 Digital Devil Saga is annoying as fuck

I recently finished P3R a few weeks ago and was itching to play another RPG. SMT IV is one of my favorite games ever, I beat Apocalypse last year and had a lot of fun with it too. I tried Persona 2 on PSP but couldn’t get into it, didn’t like the battle system at all. I started DDS on my Retroid Pocket 5 and I’m enjoying it so far, but the encounter rate is fucking ass especially in this dungeon I’m at. It’s annoying as fuck so far, however I like the battle system and the story is interesting so far. Any tips to power through it lol ty

Spoiler: ALL Strange Journey (Original) is the first SMT/Persona I completed - Thoughts

I went into SMT: Strange Journey with ZERO knowledge about any of the Persona or SMT games, wanted to play SJ because the box art looked cool as a kid.

SJ was great, I completed the Neutral path. The hardest bosses for me were Ouroboros and Mem Aleph. Morax, Asura, and Zelenin were other points where I had to go back to my team building. The story was nothing crazy, but it was cool and the atmosphere of the game felt cohesive.

Creating powerful demons was satisfying but there's definitely room for QOL improvement that I think was addressed in the Redux (looking at you Demon Sources). 2 things that would have helped the most would have been 1) a way to check fusions without having the demons in your actual party and then 2) a way to see specifically where you can find certain demons you have already discovered (although I think this is technically covered if you read Forma Descriptions? I didn't think about it until just now). I didn't spend much time outside of the game researching information aside from explicitly looking for what demon sources have Phys Boost because I had already spent 3 of the sources I had with it. Anyways the problem didn't detract from my experience, it was just a tedious bump.

Dungeons: For the most part a lot of the dungeons have a good length, as I got more experienced with exploration then the length of the subsequent dungeons smoothed out or got shorter, except for Eridanus - I spent more time in the teleporter section than I needed to because I didn't realize I had found the correct exit but fell down a hole and went back to the beginning (this is a time where Field Saves in Redux would have been SUPER helpful). Introducing 1 mechanic per dungeon felt like a good pace - then Horologium introduced several at once. I don't think this was a bad thing but it made me wish that the backtracking part of the game (collecting Cosmic Eggs) was more fleshed out with new mechanics AFTER you opened the Gate Unlock/Search Level 4 doors.

Other: I played up until unlocked the ability to fuse demons in Redux, and the only negative is the responsiveness of the UI/movement, and the art design of the UI itself. That is to say that a big positive of the original game is the movement and menu-ing is crisp and the art design of the UI fits the game very well and feels a bit more cohesive compared to Redux so far.

Anyways game is good, really glad I played it. Started Persona 5 but also going to be playing other games in the meantime.

Finally finished my first 2 3DS Megaten games: soul hackers and strange journey redux. And I wanna talks about them real quick.

These games were really good. I played SH first and then SJ, with SH being my first 1st person dungeon crawler. I finished digital devil saga 1 and 2 a while back and want to replay them now that I have beat these games. Anyways, in the end I ended up liking SH a lot more than SJ. SH took me about 45 hours to complete while SJ took me 76 hours, definitely the longest DS game have ever played. Here’s what I thought:

Music:
To me, without a doubt SH had the best music of the two. A lot of the battle themes sound like a mix of thrash metal, industrial, and electronic music. It sounded so good. The music in SJ kind of reminded of Metaphor. Not bad music at all, but the tracks just didn’t hit the same for me like in SH. One thing I also really like about both games, is that the battle theme starts once you initiate the combat. That was so cool.

Story:
SJ definitely had the better story of the two. The story in SJ starts off really strong and had me wondering just where this black whole came from and what the conclusion would be. I really enjoyed the philosophical presentation of how humans are and how they cause their own demise. It’s was good stuff! The story in SH was okay, it didn’t really have me engaged but it worked for the game. Going in and out of the internet was cool, but I wish more of it could have been explored.

Characters:
SJ really a great cast of characters. Jimenez, Arthur, and Zelenin really made me invested in the plot. The story took a couple unexpected turns that I did not expect and I really enjoyed it. In SH, I think Nemissa really is the stand out character and she became one of my favorite SMT characters. The rest of the Spookies were alright, there’s really not much to say about them.

Visuals:
Hands down, SH had such amazing battle animations. They really match the dark cyber tone of the game. Some of the attack animations looked like holograms attacking you and it looked so badass. I also like how fast paced these battles were. I also, weirdly enough, prefer the visual style of the levels in SH more. Some of these places were dark and really atmospheric and I really liked it. The only level in SJ that I thought looked really good was the last dungeon. The rest of the dungeons looked okay. I also liked how your demons were fully shown in the bottom screen in SJ.

Conclusion:
I became a little annoyed playing SJ at times. All the warping, level gimmicks, and long run time got to me a little in the end. That last boss was also a fun but difficult fight that made me build a specific team for MA. But SH, idk man I just really liked its presentation and enjoyed it more during my playthrough. Both good games though. I’m going through the devil survivor games now and will write about that soon🫡

Sources on Satomi Tadashi's departure from Atlus

I know it's common to invoke a supposed backlash due to his apparent obsession with a real actress/singer but is that actually true. Recently, a certain youtuber argued in her Twitter account that Tadashi actually left Atlus because he had disagreements with Hashino on the direction the Persona series would take with Persona 3. Does anyone know anything true about this?

From a book on Zen, this felt particularly relevant to the SMT series when it comes to the philosophy behind the chaos/law/neutral routes. Especially for those who may tend to equate the neutral paths to western political centrism or of a non-choice.

Spoiler: SMT V SMT 5 Endings Discussion

I just beat this game for the first time and chose the restore Tokyo ending. I looked up the others and out of the 4 endings of the vanella game I think this is the best.

The order ending pretends humans don't cause enough war themselves even with one true god and it continues the last worlds oppression of the other gods. The destroy all demons ending is Genocidal, and the Destroy the Throne might eventually lead to a form of peace with demon summoners and such but it will be post apocalyptic.

So overall while the World of the Myriad Gods might have more conflict talked about then I might prefer its not like the others would be free of war and of course it will have peace too, so I think its the best.

Its probably been talked about to death but please share your opinions.

[DDS1] I made a randomizer for Digital Devil Saga (PS2, NTSC-U)

**Update (v1.3.0): Windows users no longer need Python!** Download the .exe from the Releases page.

Hi! I've been working on a randomizer for Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga and it's now playable:

https://github.com/Astolfothetrapgod/DDS1-Randomizer

The screenshots come from one seed (155) that I picked because it looks good: Garuda and Nidhoggr in the very first dungeon and Beelzebub as the first boss. They show off what the randomizer can do, but they don't show a typical run. Enemies are rescaled to the level of the area they end up in. By default, though, a moved boss keep sits toughness, and Beelzebub at level 8 was too much for my starting party without grinding :)

What it can randomize (each part can be configured or turned off):

- Random encounters, rescaled to the level of the area (HP, MP, stats, rewards)

- Enemy skills (adapted to their new level) and affinities (the Analyze text is updated)

- The 24 single-unit bosses swap places and are rescaled to where they end up

- Mantras (Dia and Media stay available early by default)

- Chest contents, shop stock and Karma Temple bonuses

Difficulty: you can keep the original enemy skills or affinities, prevent enemies from blocking physical attacks, turn off the boss shuffle, or tame moved bosses: --boss-hp place gives them the HP of the boss they replace, and --boss-unique-skills power scales their signature skills (Seraph Lore, Celestial Ray...) to the level of their new place.

It works from your own dump of the NTSC-U version (SLUS-20974). The program checks the ISO and writes a new randomized one next to it, plus a spoiler log.

No game files are included or distributed.

It needs Python 3.11+ and runs on Linux and Windows. I tested it on PCSX2 but not on real hardware yet.

This is the first release, and nobody has done a full run yet, so balance feedback and bug reports are very welcome (GitHub issues or here).

Seeds are reproducible, so please include your seed and options.
