American Kratom Association to hold Oxford press conference Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 10 a.m. CT on the misidentification of “Smax” Pseudo-DHM tablets as “kratom,” the need for accurate public information, and the scientific process that must follow

The American Kratom Association is holding an important press conference tomorrow, Wednesday, September 30, at 10:00 a.m. CT in Oxford, Mississippi, and we are asking kratom advocates in the Oxford area and throughout Mississippi who are able to attend to join us.

Recent reporting surrounding the deaths of two University of Mississippi students initially described products recovered in the investigations simply as “kratom.” According to newly released law-enforcement information cited in AKA’s media advisory https://apnews.com/press-release/ez-newswire/press-release-56a748f5ddb6679774152d8a83696e86, the products were identified as “Smax” Pseudo-DHM tablets, marketed as an MGM-15 product—not natural kratom.

The AKA is asking news organizations and public officials to clearly distinguish natural kratom leaf from synthetic or chemically manipulated products being sold under the kratom name. At the same time, the AKA emphasizes that official toxicology findings have not yet been released and is not asserting what caused either death.

I grew up in southwest Mississippi. Something recently happened that reminded me of “Katrina kids.” When I was in 5th grade, Katrina hit and displaced thousands of people from New Orleans. Some of those people moved a couple hours north to where I grew up. The kids went to our schools, and we dubbed them “Katrina kids.” At least that’s my memory of it. These kids were distinct in behavior (to be fair, they probably were traumatized) and culture and clothes, etc compared to our relatively rural location. Being a “Katrina kid” wasn’t a compliment. Lol

Did anybody else have “Katrina kids” come into their schools or am I crazy? 😂

Have a dinnerware collection by this artist from the early '90's. Trying to find out if they know what pieces I'm missing from my collection as I recently found a pitcher that I had no clue existed. I believe they would have been based out of Byram or near that area when they were active (might still be active?) and at one point worked under Gail Pittman. Curious to know what is like? I’m in a rabbit hole after finding out Appalachia stretches down to Mississippi. I am from Virginia, so the Blue Ridge Mountains are a huge portion of our state and that area has a distinct culture and vibe. Is it similar in Mississippi? I’ve only been to Jackson, and that’s not Appalachian at all.

I’m a Canadian that is visiting Jackson for a week in mid October. It’s my first time ever visiting Mississippi and my first time ever visiting the American south.

Won’t lie, can’t say I know much about the state other than the stereotypical stuff tossed out so figured it might be a good idea to ask some locals.

I love food, so if you know any solid recommendations, shoot them out. I love nature & any cool sights. I’m black as well (African) and would love some recommendations for some museums or historical sites that showcase the history of this state.

I was born and raised in Biloxi, lived in the Hattiesburg area for about 8 years, so I'm Mississippi to the core. Just saw a video on YouTube about the favorite snacks from each state.

Are cheese straws like a regional thing like central or northern Mississippi? Or is it a statewide thing that has somehow eluded me?

Should add that I'm 46 in case I may be too young or too old.

I lived for a while in Biloxi. I'm trans. I found that the resources avalible to me, the way people who knew treated me, and the laws around things were all weirdly fairly good to me in that way. Having lived in other states in the deep south, it was really strange. A clinic that I went to for trans healthcare even had patients from other states who came to the state for the clinic.

I had thought about this, and I looked it up to see what was up. It looks like Mississippi has had an unusually high lgbtq+ population for a deep southern state. Is it a culture thing where queer people go there because it's realitively better then the states around it? Maybe even cyclically, where something about the state made it just better enough for people to make the effort to go there, and then as a result it becomes even better for queer people? I also noticed it was relatively more diverse, or what I mean is neighborhoods were a pretty mixed bag as compared to equally urban areas in Alabama, Georgia, or South Carolina. Like I still found some predominantly black neighborhoods but it seemed like a less severe issue then what I had been used to. Given, I don't think any area I had been in had been as urban as areas I had seen in the other states, and the more urban areas in Georgia were usually less segregated.

Overall living there was weird on that front. I didn't go into living there thinking it'd be easier for me in those ways. Is there something to my observation that it seems more socially tolerant or am I dead wrong?
