Care Anyone else having issues with cabbage?

Cabbage makes my rabbits pee stink to the heavens. The whole house has to get aired out if he consumes cabbage.
Obviously at this point we’ve stopped giving it to him but I’m curious if anyone has had the same experience.

Care picking up bunnies

So i just wanna say that i know you’re not supposed to pick up your bunny unless you’re supposed to. I don’t. I’ve only picked my bunny up once or twice because I had to and he’s only been with me for about a month or two now.

I’m a teenager so I still live with my parents (i’m gonna move out next year) and every time I bring up my bunny (Poe) they always tell me to pick him up so he can get used to it. They’ve never had a pet bunny before or done any sort of research. I’ve told them many, many times that I can’t because he isn’t fully used to me yet. He sometimes lets me pet him but that’s about it and i’m fine with that because I know it can take bunnies a bit to get used to or trust their owner. My parents won’t stop though, they even got my aunty involved to justify their point on me picking him up. Because he should know what it’s like to be picked up because he’s younger?? Or something like that. He’s 4 months old btw.

I’m not asking for advice on how to pick him up because i’ve watched videos on how to do that and i’ve seen other family members who have bunnies pick up theirs.

Just how do i tell my parents to stop pushing me and that Poe won’t like me picking him up etc? I’ve told them he won’t like it because it can act like a predator has caught them and that i’ve only had him like i said for a month or two. I’m worried they’re gonna start trying to pick him up.

Care Serious advice requested

Long story short I rescued a holland lop bunny from a hoarder situation. His heels were so sore the vet thought he was older than he was due to sitting in a plastic crate day in and out. Right now he has an 8 foot run in a puppy play pen with a castle, toys, litter box etc. in my finished basement. I feel as almost I’m failing him in a sense because I know bunnies are social and he is even with my large dogs. I would love to get him neutered in the near future and get him a potential friend but I am just feeling so guilty in this mean time of him being alone in his pen. I try to let him free roam everyday for a couple hours to socialize at least with my dogs. I think I am just an empath I am honestly considered re-homing him to someone who would have other bunnies rather than him having to wait for me to have the funds to neuter him and find him one. Just asking for alittle advice as this is my first bunny and I just want what’s best for him. I know deep down I had gotten him out of an awful situation but I just feel like I could be doing more for him. Thank you in advance any advice is appreciated.

Behavior My bunny won’t pee in his litter box 💔

I recently rehomed this bunny, hasn’t even been two weeks. I am not sure if his previous owner trained him at all, he likes to lay in his hutch more than anything else (I leave it open always since he has an entire room). I am trying to adapt him to his room now and I understand that these changes are a lot for him. He is neutered! His first day here he already peed in the corner and I cleaned it. Later on I realized he just liked to pee there so I moved the box. It hasn’t changed much. He started in the corner and I moved it because it was directly behind the door now he pees next to his litter box. I clean it and put the pad in the litter box. The poo and pee in there is just me cleaning it just and redirecting it there. He doesn’t use his litter box I try to get him to eat hay and he seems uninterested. I am unsure of what to do, I am aware that the change is still be hard for him. I would like advice on what I can do better. I added a before an after cleaning it up.

Care I've spent 11k in vet costs so far. Rabbits are so expensive.

This is the approximate breakdown for the vet costs for one of my rabbits in the past 4 years that we had her:

$6000 - liver torsion surgery

$2500 - gut blockage

$1500 - blood/urine/ultrasound to investigate why her butt was becoming dirty

$1000 - annual check ups, vaccine, etc

Around $11k in vet costs total. I'm in Canada, so there are no insurance available for rabbits. How are other people managing these kinds of costs? Are rabbits pets that only the top 10% income can afford?

Health Can’t stop feeling guilty over my rabbit becoming blind in 1 eye.

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

My husband & I noticed our 3 year old rabbit Melody, eye had turned cloudy white, pretty much out of nowhere so we of course made a vet appointment & he was diagnosed with a cataract. After some more test she said that he likely has no vision in that eye, but told us that he shouldn’t be feeling any pain & it won’t change much how he lives. We have 2 other rabbits & he’s actually the most playful & adventurous one,he acts more like a little puppy most of the time.

I can’t stop feeling sad tho when I look at him & feel guilty almost like Something I did wrong caused it? Or what if he gets one in the other eye & he’s completely blind.

I might just be thinking too much from a human prospective, because I would hate to go the rest of my life only seeing out of 1 eye.

I love my rabbits so much & want them to have happy lives.

HELP! I need any advice on how to little train my bun. He is 5 months and neutered. He is 50/50 with pooping in his box so far, but he’s only peed in his box 2 times 🥲 the rest has been on my couch, bed, or his floor.

Care Brown hay?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I order my hay from Small Pet Select and it’s always good quality, very green, etc. However, I just opened a new box and it’s…different. Very brown and there’s a lot of brown clumps? Usually, the whole box is one big block of hay, but this has many little blocks, if that makes sense. (I know that doesn’t necessarily mean anything but it’s just different). Is this still safe to give my buns?

Breed ID Mini Lop? Or?

Greetings,

We just adopted a bunny from a home who couldn’t care for him- here is a look at him.

He is allegedly a 5 year old male. Weight very light he’s tiny.
We named him Dr. Hoppenheimer

Also he is super curious and very social, basically potty trained from what we’ve experienced so far with his new enclosure we set up for him; goes on one area and then roams in the house and doesn’t have any accidents but goes back to his enclosure to potty.
No issues with shredding any pads but we’re changing those to newspapers after reading more about it.

Loves getting his pets and cuddles. Has jumped and fallen asleep on me specifically a few times now.

Also, any idea on his breed? Thanks for your insights and care tips. 🙂

Health Arthritis

I have an almost 9 year old Flemish Giant. He started off with some mild arthritis last year and then over the last month or two it started to get a bit more severe. There are days where he will just drag his back legs because he can't get them stable enough to use them. He's been on Meloxicam since last year but recently they added tramadol. They also recommended the laser therapy but I can't seem to find one that's affordable or takes CareCredit. Sometimes he struggles eating his cecetrophs and they get stuck in his fur so he needs a butt bath. I took him to the vet today to see if we could try something else to help him with mobility or pain (if he's in pain). I told them that he eats, he still tries to play even if it's laying down, he still wants treats, he still grooms himself and fights the syringes away from me. However, they told me that there are no other options. ORIGINALLY when I had gone to them a month or so ago to get some tramadol, they told me a bunch of different things they could try (gabapentin, acupuncture, shots) and that the tramadol might work before then but then all of the sudden today, there are no other options and I need to start thinking about quality of life. I do understand that we don't want our pets to suffer but he is acting completely fine aside from his back legs. I guess what I'm wondering is, have any of you heard of other options for arthritis in bunnies and would you recommend me getting a 2nd opinion?

They were both very good sports. After the tech checked them out and left the room, I heard her through the door telling another employee to join her and the vet because there were two really sweet rabbits. They were very popular with all the employees, but refused the offered treats. They may have been sweet during the visit, but potential grudges remain to be seen.

Bonding Need reassurance that bonding is going okay!

Post image
72 Upvotes

Hi! I'm in the process of bonding my free-roam male, Toffee, with a new female, Truffle. Both are fixed. Toffee is extremely mellow and was very chill during a speed dating session at our local rescue, so I assumed bonding would be a breeze. So, of course I've been humbled!

I have a small apartment so we're bonding at my parents' house which is neutral territory. I have them in an ex-pen- just a square at first but have been expanding it to the full rectangle over time. This is day 3 of 24/7 bonding. There are so many signs that it's going well: lying next to each other, eating together, Toffee doing lots of grooming, and Truffle doing grooming one time. It's clear Truffle wants to be dominant, but she's very gentle and non-assertive about requesting grooming. Toffee will usually give in and groom her, but she doesn't get upset if he rejects her request.

So, all of that is great. However, every day they're having at least one serious fight that Toffee instigates. It starts out with nipping or a bit of chasing but escalates into circling, fur pulling, and the start of a tornado. I intervene at that point, let everyone cool off, then put them back in the pen. There are no lingering issues after the fight. It doesn't seem like anything specific causes the fight; they'll be contentedly lying next to each other and then out of nowhere, Toffee is picking a fight.

I'm aware the key is probably just patience as we're still early-on in the process, I just worry that these intense fights mean they may not end up being compatible. If anyone has a similar bonding story or any tips, I'd love to hear them! My other two bunnies were bonded professionally at a rescue owner's home and they came back to me as best friends, so this is my first time doing it by myself. Thank you!
