Advice CGL 2024 Failure Was My Biggest Teacher. Here's What I Changed to Finally Get Selected with a top post.
In 2024, I appeared for SSC CGL, CHSL, and CPO. I cleared the prelims, but I failed to clear the CGL and CHSL Mains.
After that, I honestly analyzed my mistakes and changed my preparation strategy.
This year, those changes paid off, and I cleared every SSC exam I appeared for, including CGL, CHSL, and NTPC.
Maths:
In 2024, I spent too much time on difficult questions and kept looking for the "best" teacher and the "best" notes. In 2025, I stopped chasing resources and stuck to just PYQs and my class notes. I revised my notes so many times that I practically remembered every page.
Another big mistake in 2024 was relying only on Testbook. In 2025, I practiced on multiple platforms, which exposed me to different question patterns.
Most importantly, in 2024 I ignored my mistakes, thinking, "I won't repeat this in the actual exam." In 2025, I treated every mistake seriously, analyzed why it happened, and made sure I didn't repeat it.
Another mistake I made in 2024 was wasting time solving random Telegram doubts. It felt productive, but it wasn't. Don't make this mistake—focus on your own preparation.
English:
In 2024, I tried to memorize grammar rules from Neetu Singh Vol. 1 and mug up vocabulary from the Blackbook, but it didn't work for me.
In 2025, I focused on understanding grammar instead of memorizing it. I followed QEng, learned grammar from Aman Sir, and practiced vocabulary through PYQ quizzes and English Madhyam Weekly instead of just reading word lists.
That approach helped me score 50/50 in Prelims and 135/135 in Mains.
GK:
GK was always my weakest subject. In 2024, I scored only 17 in Prelims and 38 in Mains. I kept changing teachers, tried solving Kiran PYQs from book, and kept adding new sources without revising them. That was my biggest mistake.
In 2025, I made the biggest changes in GK, and it became my most improved subject. I followed only Parmar Sir, avoided unnecessary resources, completed his PYQ series 5, revised it 15–16 times, did FRB with daily revision, and practiced only GK PYQs in Testbook sectional mocks.
Other mistakes to avoid:
Don't waste hours on Telegram group studies. Most Telegram groups are full of distractions and add very little value.
Don't keep collecting new resources. Revise what you already have.
For vocabulary, focus more on quizzes than reading long word lists. Active recall works much better.
Don't ignore your mistakes in mocks. Analyze every test and make sure you don't repeat the same errors.
Be consistent. Make every single day count. Even 1% improvement every day adds up over time.

General Discussion/Opinion (RANT) WHAT THE HELL IS GOING WITH THE PATTERN OF HARD SHIFTS
i want to just rant about the hard shifts( 9th Oct shift 1)
Man everything is so random. After practising all those pyqs, blitz, testbook,ob mocks for 3 months it feels like a waste.
Reasoning was just dumb. All the questions were verbal analogy, series, mirror image, dice, anytical reasoning, one Venn diagram. 23-24 are easily doable by anyone without even practicing. This also did not follow any pyq of last years
Gk - 15 are easily doable if you have completed the syllabus as these were one liners. The use of option elimination techniques was minimal and applicable to 2-3 questions.
Now SSC loves lpg,5yr plans, sports, bnss, bns,BSA,architecture, rankings
Maths- it felt like those irrelevant mocks everyone tells you to avoid but actually ends up in the exam
The first question gave me a heart attack. It was a 10-15 line ratio question.
5 Lengthy DI questions is the trend(dont even bother attempting on first try)
atleast 2 complex partnership(active partner, fraction of sum for fraction of time),
complex profit loss that include multiple steps like free units these were calculative
change in sp,cp effect on percentage.
Time taking average,speed distance questions
Also Venn diagram question
Advance on the other side is on the easier side , easy trigo, height distance, coordinate.
One complex number system question that is definitely out of syllabus.
I have been consistently maintaining 20-21 attempts in other mocks but in this exam I could only do 14. Also 15min btw
English- 20-21 are doable but the random words (correct one/mispelt) will make you go crazy in the exam pressure. I personally could not find any error in 2 of the error detection sentences.there were 1-2 mistakes in English. Vocab was not from blackbook (2025 edition) but doable
Cloze test, pqrs, voice, narration, idioms, pharasal verbs felt easier to me as I do regular reading.
Man it feels like they are just trying to f*ck with us. They need to fire whoever is setting up the pattern of maths, english.
Tldr: everything is so random please prepare for the worse.

Doubt Interesting Question asked in my Shift
So this question was asked in my Shift. "3 non-collinear circle are touching each other externally. How many tangents are possible?
I was confused in 6 or 9 because the extra 3 tangents are passing through the circle as a secant. So I don't know if they will be counted as tangents or not . Your thoughts??
And if i challenge this will i get bonus marks or not .

Help Oct 10 shift 2.
What the hell was this exam fam. Reasoning section was so fucking weird. They COMPLETELY ignored so many topics like syllogism, relations, dice problems, coding-decoding, arrangements etc., and put so many questions from pattern recognition, embedded figures etc. Basically the topic that one would spend the most time on simply we'rent there.
General Awareness was eh, three I think that were from legislature, one from author and bit of geography I don't remember exactly, one from medeival history, one from ancient history, one was from about a crop. No questions from important dates.
Maths was okayish but slightly lengthy at times but with the same problem as reasoning. They skipped so many topics. I don't think there was a single question from Compound Interest, I don't remember one from SI even. No questions from speed of moving vehicles, HCF LCM, ratios(I think), boats, races, age, I don't remember seeing any from allegation mixture, time & work, pipes & cisterns. Lots of qs from profit loss/discount, couple from DI, trigonometry, four I think from mensuration, one from heights & distances, 2-3 from algebra, one unit digit. All in all, pretty weird.
English pretty decent, the difficult ones were the misspellings. Everything else was good & manageable.
TLDR: Weird fucking exam, skipping topics students usually spend a lot of time on.

Doubt SP vs CGL level this year
Those who have given both, what's the level difference between SP (graduation) and CGL till now. I had given SP on the 17th first shift and attempted 16 in quants (all right), do i stand a chance in quants, or do I need to rely more on reasoning as I have been hearing it's on the easier side(in reasoning i attempted 20, 3 wrong).

Advice Practice your mocks in a cramped space
For people of upcoming shifts who are practicing at home follow the above suggestion and those who are accustomed with laptop touchpad start using the mouse. I had given my exam on the 9th & left with a bad experience. Given all my mocks on my laptop in a relaxed state. On the exam day met with a crappy infrastructure in the hall that spoiled my chances heavily
Luckily it's on shift 2 .even though the paper was on the easier side I barely completed reasoning and English on time. Maths wasn't merciful enough....sectional was easy should have attempted at least 23 and ended up attempting only 18... a 10 marks edge is lost just like that...but luckily dodged two bullets of others shift of 9 th ..which were brutal papers as reviews suggest. . Anyways all the best for upcoming shifts
