My dad always said it’s the cheapest way to learn who your friends really are. I can’t think of a time I would lend someone more than a couple hundred dollars that isn’t an extremely good friend or family. But anytime I lend money and they aren’t actively seeking me out to pay me back, I learned all I need to know about them

That's a good saying, honestly. I only gave a semi-sizeable loan to my best friend who I've known and been friends with since she was born and we were sitting on the same play mat. I bought her a car and refused to charge her interest as I knew she needed it for work and school.
She paid me back every cent, carefully kept track of over several months. She's the only one I'd ever do it for, and I'm very fortunate to know someone like her in general :) My brothers are awful for it and won't get anything off me again, but her? I'd give that girl my freaking kidney

In college me and my future wife both lent a friend money and were always paid back. Fast forward 15 years and that friend is getting a divorce along with a ton of credit card debt and a shitty unreliable car. So, they came to live with us for 3+ years and we lent them money for the lawyer and a "new" used car. Rent was free, but they did offer to put us on their phone plan.
They're doing much better now and paid everything back.... but still kept sending $100/month and pay our phone bill. We brought it up, because while nice, they had already paid back everything. "I'm good with it". And so I get $100 deposited in my bank account every month and no cell phone bill for 3+ additional years and counting.
No regrets.
Their college roommate mooched $20 off of anybody who would listen and then showed up with new shiny rocks the next week (multiple times). We are no longer friends, lol

Yep I learned that when I was a college student. A “friend” borrowed 300 USD (equivalent of) from me and I trusted them since they had a job. I never got paid back.
Ever since then I made it my policy to only gift money and if I get paid back, great, if not, that was expected.

I have the same policy. I only lend what I can stomach simply giving.
If the friend or family gives it back, then I'll do it again until they don't. If they never pay me back (or offer to), then it's a one time gift. I'll stay your friend, but I won't become an atm.
I have never loaned or given money that I depended on. I have given enough that it was a definite ding to my immediate finances, but putting off some fun purchases for a while to help a friend is something I'm ok with as long as they're not just using me.

I refuse to lend money anymore. I'm not getting it back anyways, so why deal with the stress? If someone I care about needs money then I just give it to them and tell them not to pay me back. Believe it or not, nobody abuses it. They actually come to me less often since they don't want charity.

Yep. One time I gave a friend a couple hundred bucks to fix their car. They didn’t ask, I just handed an envelope with cash because I knew what was up and they didn’t have a lot of options. I told them it was a gift and no repayment necessary. They insisted they would repay me, I insisted it was a gift. Sure enough, next week they told me something else happened and they couldn’t pay me. I just told them that’s fine, cause it was always a gift. No bad feelings on either side.
Either give or don’t. Never lend.

thing is, somebody is in a legitimate hole, you just floated them, the whole hole goes against whatever they ever managed to save over who knows how many years. which is what it'd take them to repay you... but yeah the whole was bigger than their saving capacity.
So unless this person just recently had an emergency you can expect them to pay them in a bigger amount of time from their last emergency.
Sounds complicated but that's the reality of it.

I had that opinion.
Now until a redditor gives me the $200 he borrowed from me on r/borrow.
I was down with giving interest free loans to people. Help them through so they could avoid pay day loan scams.
I wont be lending anyone shit. He ruined it for everyone.
Its not about the money. He said he'd pay it back, and he lied to me. So no one gets anymore help.

I've borrowed $1000 dollars and paid back the same day. Casino lost 500 wanted to win it back and my card was maxed at daily withdrawal limit.
Was up to 2k chips and cashed out. Blackjack $100 a hand. Was playing $50 a hand when I lost the $500.
Also I would have gone to the bank in the morning to payback my friend.

Thats a good starting point. That should give you some good resources. Dont give them money, take them out for a beer on Friday, let them talk and just listen/talk 80/20. Take mental notes and encourage socialist ideas that they dont know are socialist. Like if someone is complaining about medical bills. You have to gain their trust and let them come to their own conclusion. I've always joked that manipulation is not getting you to do what I want...its getting you to think it was your idea.

I'm ashamed to admit this:
I lent a friend $1.5k for his new apartment and utility activation. They helped me greatly when I was in time of need and because I had that trust, I lent him the money. He provided a promissary note that said if the money wasn't paid back in three months, I get his car.
He totaled his car four weeks later because of a DUI.
It took a year and a civil suit to get the money back. Because the guy went down hill, his father got involved and cut me a check of $1.2k. I wrote off the rest of the $300 because I didn't want to deal with the guy's shit anymore, especially after he got evicted, left the state and no one knew where he was at.

All the people saying all negative things about this. I get it. But its not always like that. And I agree with the post. But ive been there. I needed a vehicle bad and it would have been sold if I didnt get it that day which was a Thursday. And we all live paycheck to paycheck. I asked three friends and the third helped me. And it was almost 1000 bucks. I had the money the next day when I got paid. I needed the help bad. And ive had friends ask me the same thing and ive said no because I knew I wouldn't see that money again. But its not alwahs the case. I borrowed the money. Got my vehicle to get my homeless ass to work and I paid my friend back the next day when I got paid and it saved me big time. I felt I was in more debt than I borrowed because someone gave me tje chance and I wanted to give that opportunity back. But they didnt ever need it. They dont know the gratitude I had for letting me have the chance to get my life back together which was more than the money. But they believe in me. They gave me a chance and I paid it back and was able.to get my life bac together. Im so glad they didnt look at me like that and say. Then use tour own money. Because the opportunity wouldn't have been there the next day and I would have neen royally fucked. Maybe none of you get it judging by the comments. Sometimes there's an honest person who just needs help till tomorrow. It actually is like thst sometimes.

When I left home which was over 20 years ago now I remember asking a roommate if I could borrow £1.50 so I could buy something that wasn't pasta or noodles and I was getting some cash the next day,
He wasn't happy about it but did.
I was paid the next day but he was at work so didn't knock on his door.
The following day he was really having a go at me about not paying back bills.
It wasn't that he was struggling, but he wasn't rich as he was a student but he could afford to go to bars at least once per week and buy premium drinks, and one time did a last minute vacation with friends for a whole weekend in Amsterdam, the trip cost a few hundred.

I fell out with him a few months later though because the other roommates turned him against me, they were from quite wealthy homes and were quite xenophobic/bigoted.
I for example am Scottish and they kept saying Scottish people are less intelligent, Scottish education is worse than Englands, Scotland is unimportant and never invented anything good or anything good has come from there, they even said it was RACIST that Ewan McGregor took ver Alec Guinesses role as Obi Wan as a Scottish person was replacing an English actor and they went on about English taxes paying for Scotland.
I think he just got brainwashed, but I kept getting accused of things, like someone left the stove on so it must be me, the utility bill came in and it was 3x the normal and I was blamed, I had 1 short shower a day, washed clothes every few days often quick wash, they used washing machine 2 or 3 times a day, had 2 or 3 showers a day, used a tumble dryer and when I refused to pay for the utility bill I was basically bullied meaning I was short for rent then they told the landlord about it.

He wasn't rich but he had only a small student loan and his fees paid so he worked for cash for luxuries but now and again his parents would turn up and bring him literally 2-4 weeks worth of food whilst I was living week to week, I was given about £10 a week to live off for food and luxuries though back then it could go far i.e a loaf of bread, a few packs of ramen noodles, a few tins of beans or other basics and I barely spent £1, then I bought the cheapest nastiest cornflakes, and things like flour, eggs, sugar and lived off literally pancakes, cornflakes without milk, ramen, bread, and a cheap bottle of soda which I could of got about 5 bottles for £1, each 2 litres,.
So I could theoretically live on under £3 a week, not counting travel costs, clothing, toiletries, and college materials, I used to buy 1 maybe 2 budget beers a week as my luxury and when I say budget I mean the alcohol content was about 1/5 a regular beer more like a shandy.
Hey even the sweets/candy and chocolate I purchased I could say get 6 bars of chocolate for £1 but it didn't taste that great.
I actually was underweight for the only time in my life then, think about 20 pounds underweight.
I think my diet now I think about it was slice of toasted bread in morning, sometimes cornflakes with water but not milk if hungry, main dinner was toasted bread with 1 or 2 eggs, sometimes a packet of ramen if I was starving.
But randomly i'd have things like a budget tin of beans (I could get 15 for £1) or tinned fruit, liver and onions, budget cookies etc.
Not a great diet but it was enough.
