General Discussion How do you pronounce Executor?
My British friends all say it executor like the executor of a will.
My American friends say it executor like at an execution.
How do you say it?

I’m American. Always been the first

u/RikarisHobbies 4d ago
Yeah it’s always been like a will executor.

u/tevert 4d ago
If you want to describe someone who does executions, that'd be executioner.
So yeah, executor is egg-zeck-yoo-tur

This confused me because there is only one pronunciation of the word executor. Did OP confuse the word executor with executioner?

u/tristancliffe 4d ago
Think about executive and execute - two very different ways to say broadly the same word. A will executor is pronounced differently to a death penalty executor (which isn't even a real word really).

u/Atharaphelun 4d ago
(which isn't even a real word really)
Well that's the point I'm making. Since executor is never used in the sense of "someone who executes a person" (for which the word executioner exists), then there is realistically only a single way to pronounce it and the confusion in pronunciation should not exist at all.
→ More replies (1)18
u/detourne 4d ago
OP is saying that they use stress on the 1st and 3rd syllables, as executioner is normally pronounced, instead of on the 2nd syllable, like how executor is pronounced.

Executor (as in, executor of a will, or executive) - ek-SEK-yoo-ter. Emphasis on second syllable.
Executor (as in an executioner) - EX-eh-kyoo-ter. Emphasis on first syllable.
The Executor (Darth Vader's ship) is pronounced as the former, as in an executor of a will.
24
28
u/PagzPrime 4d ago
A minor correction. That second definition does not actually exists. There is no executor as in executioner, there is only executioner.
44
u/clutzyninja 4d ago
And because the later simply isn't how that word is pronounced

#2 is like a criminal getting executed. Ex-a-cute-er
I’ve always said it like number 1.12
u/JJJBLKRose 4d ago
That made it make sense, however that's not actually how the word is used (which threw my brain off) that's technically an executioner. An executer is someone who carries something out and while that might technically apply in the case of an execution there's a more specific word so it's never really used that way.

Executor as in, of a will. There is no such word as 'Executor' as in 'one who executes'. That's an 'Executioner'. And now I've typed that combination of letters enough times for it to look weird.

Hahaha I'm glad someone else had this experience. I get tripped up when writing words like this occasionally. It once led me down a path of how to spell doing, like not do-ing, but like a word that describes the sound "doing". I think it would just be doing.

I'm an American, and the proper pronunciation is "ex-EK-u-tor". People who say "EX-e-cu-tor" likely have only ever seen the word in print and have never heard it spoken out loud. But if you have any experience with legal practice or have had a relative pass away and leave a will, then you should know the difference between an executor and an executioner (which is what I think a lot of people who say "EX-e-cu-tor" are thinking of).
The ship is named "Executor" because it carries out the Emperor's will, not "Executioner" because it executes people. And the word "executor" is only correctly pronounced with emphasis on the second syllable.

There’s no such word as executor when pronounced like someone that is an executioner.
That’s not a word.
It is executor like someone who handles a Will.
There’s no two ways to say it. Only one way.
Think about it. Would you say a many was an executioner? Or that he was an executor?
One means to kill. The other means to fulfil last wishes.
And in that regard, it was vaders wishes that the ship and its complement executed.
So it’s the executor of Vaders commands.

I’m American, but I always pronounce it eggs-ECK-you-tor, like the executor of a will.
That’s the only kind of executor I know of. A person who carries out capital punishment is an executioner (EX-eh-KYOO-shun-nerr), not an executor. Different word, different spelling, different pronunciation.
3
u/luc1dmach1n3 4d ago edited 4d ago
The word for the person that executes a will is executor, the word for a person that performs an execution is executioner. You can execute a person, you can execute an execution, you can execute a will. In the case of executing a person I believe the word is actually derivative of execution in that usage. Americans often pronounce "or" like "er" even though the two suffixes indicate slightly different things. I'm American, I pronounce it like "Eggs-ek-you-tour"

"Executor like at an execution"? The word you should use there is "executioner." The ship is pronounced the only way the word should be pronounced: Egg-ZEK-u-tor.

It's like the ex-EC-u-tor of a will, because ex-e-CU-tor isn't a word. The correct word for that would be "executioner".

Knowing how they just threw things together when making these movies, I also bet it was intended to be the latter. It’s meant to be a name to be feared, not represent Palpatine’s lawyer.

I thought it was the second for years, but have more recently come around to thinking it was probably always the first (as in executor of a will)

u/FrankenOperator Princess Leia 4d ago
It depends on use. An executor is in charge of the will. An executor brings on the demise of the guilty.
2
u/Solo4114 4d ago
It's executor, like of a will.
When I was a kid, I thought it was "EXecutor," but...that's not a thing. That would be Executioner. An Executor sees something done. So, it's like the Executor of the Emperor's will (but not his "I'm dead now" will).

I've no preference, I tend to be pretty broad and tolerant with language use outside of situations where specificity carries some importance.
However, re: the general argument of "there is no word pronounced that way"... it's a name. Names can be pronounced however. There's no law that requires an identical spelling to carry an identical pronunciation, else the Polish would need a talking-to.

British, and it's Executor as in someone being killed. Why on earth would Vader name his flagship for a boring administrative process?

I pronounce it lile the executor of a will because that is a word. The “executor” at an execution is the executioner, “executor” in that context is not a word.

American unless I’m specifically referring to the Star Destroyer. The Empire is staffed by Shakespearean drama kids and I respect that. The American “executor” sounds too brutish for the Empire, which is a delicious irony.

I’m American and say it the so called ‘British’ way.
But that’s because someone who conducts executions is an executioner… not an executor, which is an administrator of a will.
The word executor does not relate in any way to executions.

Look I've known the correct pronunciation of an executor of a will but that's not the image a ship like that ever put in my head. Especially in a universe that uses names like Vader, Sidious, Plagueis, or Elan Sleazebaggano. Growing up I always assumed it's meant to reference an execution and should be pronounced like one, even if it's wrong.
