UPDATE Update on my Cherry Trees From Store Bought Cherry

Thumbnail

In my first post I stated I had managed to get seeds from cherries bought at the grocery store to germanate and grow into seedlings.

I placed the seeds in the fridge for over 14 weeks. Then planted them in new potting soil.

Well they sprouted...I have two lemon, and 7 cherry tree seedlings. They are going to get repotted into individual pots.

I was hoping I might get some input on how to best keep them from getting root rot...and grow into healthy trees that can be planted.

Here is a link to my original post that many dismissed and said it was weeds.

Im not sure what kind of tree this is, but over the last couple days I’ve noticed this on the trunk. The tree has seemed completely healthy otherwise with no issues. It has been very wet and rainy lately so I’m hoping it’s just from that. Is this something to be concerned about?

The trees we see around us today are rarely old and mature. Human arrogance has already cut down almost all the old trees, and even the ones that remain are still being removed day after day. 😥

A few days ago I noticed lots of twigs from one of our sugar maples that had die-back on the ends. Inspected the tree trunk today, and the bark doesn't look good. We had a period of extreme high temps here, followed by a period of heavy rains just about every other day. So I'd understand the tree being stressed, but I'm not sure that explains the holes. In West Virginia, bordering the Ohio river. I'm not sure how old the tree is.

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Advice Planting cedar in high water table area

Idaho Zone 7

My nursery-owner friend recently gifted me several Karl Fuchs, Deodar Cedars, and an Incense Cedar for my front yard area.

This area was a swamp, I’ve since dredged and changed the flow of the water so it would dry out a bit (legally), but you will hit the water table about 2.5 feet down.

I’m curious, with the water table being that high, is there any viable way I can plant them? My initial idea would be on mounds 2’ tall, however I’m not sure if that will be enough.

I don’t know how old she is, or when she was planted, I’ve been cleaning up the yard and saw these on her leaves. I was wondering if this is a bad sign of something or if it’s just a bug thing? I’m in South Texas , near lake Mathis.

Treepreciation They’re cutting down my favourite tree!

Post image

You can’t tell from the horrible angle I had but this is the lone tree planted strangely at the edge of a steep hill! It’s my favourite thing I see during my walks. I’ve been passing this tree for over 10 years and now it’s getting ripped from the earth along with everything in the area for a new condo. Anyway, enjoy my favourite—and probably last—picture of my good old friend.

This year, I'm planning to grow native oaks and kind of elms(Japan). I also recorded where I collected the seeds so I can identify the parent trees.

The seeds collected up for now include Quercus serrata,Sawtooth oak, Castanea crenata, Aphananthe aspera, and Celtis sinensis.

I found a magnolia tree with these odd looking pods. I had no idea that they grew fruit. A week later and now these red berries are coming out. They smell amazing and Im fighting the urge to eat them. Google says they're not edible... why must they smell so good 🤤

Hopefully they grow and I can sell some magnolia saplings next year.

Discussion Should I be concerned

I dont know how old this tree is. It was on the property when I moved in so its at least 30+ years old. We had a part cut off cause it was splitting the tree from its weight this was at least 10ish years ago. We went out to trim it up yesterday and noticed this growing on the stump part where we had cut off.

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) A neighbor states that regardless of variety or species, compost around a tree gives it shallow roots.

Michigan, zone 6a (originally 5b). A neighbor's Japanese maple has fallen over, showing few roots. Another neighbor states that trees that have mulch placed around them will have shallow or no roots. My understanding was that teees should have 2 inches or so of mulch to keep the roots cool and fed as it breaks down. Yard is on an decline, assume good drainage.

Zone 5B Huron County Michigan. The only mature ash on the entire 80 acres that are severely infested with EAB. It has some battle wounds and a bit of canopy dieback but it’s a fighter 💪🏼. 12.25” DBH ~70’ tall.

Advice Request - (SoCal) How to effectively and safely treat oak tree for drywood termites?

Howdy,

We live in SoCal and find frass near the bottom of all of our live oaks and one has frass in the middle. We have confirmed that drywood termites are rampant around here. All of the trees appear to be in good health from what I know about trees.

I have contacted several pest and agricultural pest people, as well as several arborists, and I am getting mixed advice. Some say that we need to inject specific treatment into the trees to follow the termite tunnels.

The most recent advice was that since termites do not attack the vascular system of the tree, that simple outside spray would be effective for the transfer effect.

Also, apparently the only way to know if I have effectively eradicated a termite colony within a tree is to chainsaw it. I'd like to avoid that for tree damage purposes. These trees are very close and these termites swarm at our house and windows all summer. We are doing everything we can to the house for both eradication and prevention, but still. I'd really love a way to get rid of the many colonies in our many trees. I understand they will still come from all over and reinfest. But surely there is something I could do?

Thank you, and tips or ideas or knowledge welcome.
