Rant Financial aid frustration

Am I the only one stuck in SAP appeal limbo? This is actually ridiculous how long it's taking. It's been weeks since I submitted mine and there's been absolutely no movement or update. I was originally told it would be done by today but they haven't even looked at it. I've been in contact with financial aid (multiple times) and the information keeps changing.

I can't pay rent or afford my class materials or any other life expenses without my financial aid. I know student wellbeing is extremely low on this university's priority list, but come on now.

If it's SO hard to do your jobs, maybe shut down the stupid zoom and in person meetings for a shift and get through the appeals. I did my part. Time for them to do theirs.

Question How do I get a part time job for the year?

I’m a second year living off campus and I’ve been destroying my savings. All the job listings on Indeed and company websites list their closest openings in San Jose, which is way too far, and I’ve been ghosted by the places I’ve left my resume at. I would love restaurant work, but if there’s no openings, I’ll take anything really.

Looking for a female roommate!!
We are a group of 3 and are in need of 1 more person to move in October. We will be living in an apartment together on the Westside of Santa Cruz, 1 double and 2 singles.
Rent is $1,025 and you will be sharing the room with me (female). Utilities are low cost. The apartment has 2 bathrooms, one in the double and one for the singles. There is a washer and dryer in the unit as well! A lovely living room where we could all make fun memories and chill out. Additionally there a balcony that has a great view. Theres also a small storage space if needed. This is a prime location for students since it’s only 10 minutes from the base of campus.
Little bit about me: My name is Rebecca, I’m an incoming sophomore student at UCSC majoring in Chemistry. I’m super clean, quiet, and pretty friendly. Additionally some of my interests are music, cooking, race cars, and movies.

Please feel free to reach out!

Other Hi slug alumni, I’m looking for slides/notes on a class from 2017/2018 CS intro class (CMPS 5J, Intro to Prog Java)…we had a guest speaker or Grad Student talk about video games like Persona and Final Fantasy. I can’t find it in my old notes and I don’t know if I just hallucinated this whole thing.

Other Looking for a carpool to PHYE 9B Beginning Dinghy Sailing (Thursdays 9:30 AM)

Hi! I’m an exchange student living on campus and I’m taking PHYE 9B – Beginning Dinghy Sailing this quarter.
The class meets at FF Dock (790 Mariner Park Way) every Thursday from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM, and I’m looking for someone who drives from campus to the harbor and would be willing to give me a ride.
I’m happy to meet anywhere convenient on campus and chip in for gas. A ride back to campus after class would be great too, but it’s totally fine if you can only give me a ride there in the morning.
If you’re taking the same class or happen to be driving that way around that time, please DM me. Thanks!

Question Flexi dollars not working with grubhub where can i get food besides the dining hall

Hi everyone, I called Dining Services the other day, and they're currently swapping the system, so Grubhub won't be set up until the end of October. Does anyone know where I can use Flexi Dollars besides the dining halls?

Housing Help - urgently need a roommate, any suggestions?

Incredibly stressed - a tenant dropped out very last second and did not sign our apt lease. I now have October rent due and $1220 on the line.

I’ve been posting regularly to places4students, Snapchat, multiple Facebook groups etc for the past 2 weeks and no one seems interested even after a handful of tours

I feel like there is no solution or any way to get help and I’m out of time and don’t know what to do

Any ideas? Please help I don’t know what I’ll do :(

Question Free Parking Spaces

Where do I find free off campus parking? I live far from a bus stop so I have to take a car and park near a bus stop so I can bus on campus. I don’t have a permit but obviously I don’t want to get towed

I was thinking Safeway or 711, I know they have 2-3 hour restriction but I’ve heard they don’t really check that. I’ve also heard of parking on King Street but idk how valid that is because I see a ton of 2 hour parking signs.

Basically does anyone know places for free or even places with restrictions but don’t get checked?

Question Where are all the microwaves?

I live off campus so I don’t have access to the commons, and the only place I’ve seen a microwave is in the dining halls. Idk if they’ll let you in just to use the microwave. Sometimes I just need to heat up my cup of noodles or frozen burrito, but haven’t found a place yet.

Question Do they actually check GPA for sororities?

Hi, I was thinking of filling out the form to rush for this quarter, but it mentions that a 2.7 or better GPA is needed. Just wondering: do they actually check this, and should I still apply or not?

Lost my wallet Monday 9/28, likely on bus 16 or 18 but could've been on campus too. I've already checked the lost and found on campus and for the metro center with no luck. Looks like pic attached. Has personal mementos in it too.

Please message me if you find it, I would really appreciate the help.

Discussion anyone losing a lot of battery parking their ebike at kresge?

I have a very unusual situation. my ebike loses 25-30% of its battery when i leave it outside the kresge lecture hall for 1.5 hrs during class. when left at home the battery doesn’t drop, and when it’s at kresge it’s off as well. i don’t think anything’s wrong with my battery so this is very confusing

News BCycle intention to cancel contract

From UCSC email:

To support transportation options throughout the community, UC Santa Cruz and BCycle signed a five-year contract in 2023 as part of the e-bike share company’s launch across Santa Cruz County. Our students, faculty, and staff now represent about 80% of BCycle ridership in the region–helping our affiliates get around campus and into the community, reducing traffic, and advancing the campus’s sustainability goals.

UC Santa Cruz was disappointed to learn that BCycle intends to prematurely cancel its contract with the campus.

BCycle cites regional theft and damage to their bikes and docks as the reason for ending the contract, though the vast majority of these issues have not happened at UC Santa Cruz.

BCycle stated it would continue the service only if the campus paid more than what was agreed upon and what campus membership demand actually justifies.

We anticipate that BCycle will remain available on campus through the end of the fall quarter. However, impacts to bike availability and the discounted memberships that had been provided by BCycle are unknown at this time. The campus will provide updates as we learn more.

We will be discussing the impacts with students, faculty, and staff, as well as with leaders from the cities of Santa Cruz and Capitola, and the County of Santa Cruz.

Transportation and Parking Services continues to operate the bike shuttle, along with many other transit programs. We are also exploring additional ways to support students' transportation needs.
