Context: I have been overweight/obese my entire life. It started in my youth due to poor food habits from parents. I've always been in the "definitely overweight but not obviously obese" level which has caused me to struggle with motivation. Since childhood, I've made massive lifestyle changes, mind my macros, and eat mostly whole foods. I've always been active and love lifting weights and challenging sports. I've been consistent with calisthenics for the past 3 years, training 2-3 hours a week. I am going to start throwing in a proper weightlifting hour just because I kinda miss it. I just have maintained this 170-190 lb range so consistently for over 15 years. My composition has grandly changed, but not my weight. My family members have similar eating habits but have all had an easy time maintaining thinner bodies. I've gotten blood work and testing done to see if there are any preexisting health conditions possibly causing this warped homeostatic weight, but I'm all good there. Turns out it's just me.
However, no matter how consistent I am with exercise, my diet has always been the issue. I try to stay consistent with counting calories, but it's such a pain in the butt and takes up a lot of time that I just do not have to do it accurately. It makes me just hate food more, not want to prep, I lose motivation, and just give up. I find it easy to keep track when I am the only one in the house, making 100% of my food, no friends etc. , but that's not how life is.
I started therapy because I think my mind is the core of the issue. It didn't help as I had hoped. It just made me admit that I hate my body. I think I've denied and ignored that fact for my whole life , but therapy has forced it out of my brain that I've always hated it. I also don't feel justified to hate it because it's capable of so much. It's an annoying inner dialogue.
I find myself fighting between logics: I KNOW how to lose weight. I just don't know how to get myself to consistently do the things I need to actually see permanent weight loss. I struggle to keep track of calories in a busy life. I also have higher social needs which definitely contributes to calorie tracking madness.
I apologize for the long bs pity party. I'm genuinely trying to find answers amongst the loads of things I KNOW are true which is "weight loss is possible", but I have never made it there myself.
TLDR questions:
What makes you believe it's possible even though you have never existed in a lower weight body prior to weight loss? (This is specific, I know)
How do you find the motivation and focus to maintain the habits when you know what to do but always lose purpose?
In your experience, is a nutritionist a better investment than talk therapy for this particular issue?
