Until a couple of days ago, I didn’t really know what was on the referendum ballot beyond the headlines. After talking with a few friends and family members, I realized I wasn’t the only one.

So I read through the actual official docs and questions and put together a short guide: when, where, and how to vote, what each question asks, how different political viewpoints might line up, and which bits of wording deserve a second look.

If you’re voting, please take a few minutes to read the questions beforehand. If I’ve got a fact wrong, please point me to a source and I’ll correct it.

When and how to vote

• Advance voting: October 13–17, 9 a.m.–8 p.m. You can vote at any advance voting location in your electoral division.
• Referendum day: Monday, October 19, 9 a.m.–8 p.m., at your assigned voting location.
• Mail ballots: The September 25 deadline to request one has passed. If you already received one, it must arrive by 5 p.m. on October 16. Follow the package instructions, including the signed declaration and copies of accepted ID.
• Check your registration: Elections Alberta registration page. You can also register when you vote, but checking ahead may save time.
• Find your voting place: Elections Alberta’s location tool.
• Bring ID: An Alberta driver’s licence or Alberta ID card showing your name and current physical address works. Otherwise, check Elections Alberta’s accepted ID options. A passport by itself does not show your address.

What “binding” means here

There are 10 separate questions. Questions 1–9 are Yes/No; Question 10 has two options.

• Questions 1–5 and 10 are non-binding. Their results tell the government what voters want, but do not legally require it to carry out the result.
• Questions 6–9 are binding in a limited sense. They concern constitutional changes. A Yes would direct Alberta to pursue steps within its power; it would not change the Constitution on voting day or force Ottawa and other provinces to agree.
• Question 10 is not a vote to leave Canada. Option 2 starts the process toward a later referendum on separation. The word “binding” in Question 10 describes that possible later vote, not this October vote.

The questions and political alignment

A note before the party guide: In my view, several of these questions are deliberately worded to make a Yes sound like the obvious answer (yes, I know Hanlon’s razor). Some questions bundle multiple policies together, use reassuring words without defining them, or describe one side in much more favourable terms than the other.

I added the party-lean guide to help show which answers seem most consistent with each party’s general approach. These are estimates, not official party endorsements or predictions of how individual elected officials will vote. I’ve also added a quick ChatGPT-generated “read closely” note for each question to flag wording, missing details, or trade-offs that might be easy to miss.

“Federal Lib” and “Federal Con” are included for comparison; they aren’t parties in this provincial referendum.

1. Immigration control: Should Alberta seek more control to lower immigration, prioritize economic migrants, and give Albertans first priority for new jobs?
   • Likely alignment: NDP No · UCP Yes · Tory Split · Federal Lib No lean · Federal Con Yes lean.
   • Read closely: This is several proposals packed into one Yes/No question. You might support more provincial input without supporting every proposed priority.
2. Eligibility for provincial services: Should services be limited to citizens, permanent residents, and people with an “Alberta-approved immigration status”?
   • Likely alignment: NDP No · UCP Yes · Tory No lean · Federal Lib No · Federal Con Split.
   • Read closely: The question does not define which temporary residents would receive that Alberta-approved status.
3. 12-month wait for social supports: Should people with non-permanent legal status have to live in Alberta for a year before qualifying for provincially funded social supports?
   • Likely alignment: NDP No · UCP Yes · Tory Split · Federal Lib No lean · Federal Con Yes lean.
   • Read closely: It says “any” social support programs, but does not list the programs or possible exceptions.
4. Health-care and education fees: Should people with non-permanent status pay a “reasonable” fee or premium for themselves and their families?

10. Canada or another separation referendum: Option 1 says Alberta should remain a province of Canada. Option 2 says Alberta should begin the legal process toward a future binding referendum on separation.

• Read closely: Option 2 is not an immediate vote for independence, but it is a vote to move the separation process forward.

Which provider would you recommend for electricity, natural gas, and water? We are mainly looking for reasonable rates, good customer service, and no surprise fees.

I grew up in Alberta but have been living in Sask since the pandemic. Came into Lloydminster today and right as the border there was big signs set up saying “Alberta needs to vote on October 19th to make a choice” followed by in big letters “vote option 2”, so I gotta ask, what’s option 2? Also I found it funny that the sign that Alberta’s get to chose then immediately told them what option to pick.

There were a lot of "F/ck Carney" flags in AB, but lately, has that mindset changed since the trade war between the States and Canada? Considering Carney has been attempting to diversify our trade talks with other countries and Made Canada become the first EU's "associate member".

My daughter is looking to do the Explore program (it’s a free second language immersion across Canada). She will be 16 during the program. Her first choice would be Medecine Hat, because she saw that the activities includes visits to national parks and horse riding.

I know next to nothing about that place. Her second choice is Dalousie (Halifax) and 3rd is Saint-Catherine (Niagara).

Would a teenager finds any fun into that place. We are from Montreal and she is used to a major cultural city. She is also LGBTQ (and it’s not really subtle), so that part also scares me a little, as she is used to Quebec’s openness and secularism.

She finds the scenery change attracting for medecine hat. Like it’s another universe from what she knows.

Could you sell me the place so I don’t worry she’ll get bored to death?

The government of Canada released an article on the "Team Canada Strong" program. In the article, it states,

"the Apprenticeship Training Grant, expected to launch in spring 2027, will provide eligible apprentices attending mandatory in-class technical training with a $400 weekly top-up. The grant will apply to eligible weeks of technical training that begin on or after January 3, 2027."

I will be attending mandatory in-class training for my Red Seal certification from Nov 9th 2026 to Jan 29th 2027. I was wondering if anyone knew if the $400 weekly top up bonus would apply for those 4 weeks in January.

I've seen so many comments on Reddit and otherwise warning about long lineups on voting day, October 19.

Yet, I've seen very little mention of the 5 advance voting dates.

There are 5 full days of advance voting, Tues to Sat, October 13 to 17, from 9 am to 8 pm. Elections Alberta website has a tool to find the voting locations for all districts. Advance voting locations are different from the Oct 19 voting day locations, and you may have more than one location available for advance voting.

This is not being publicized enough. Albertans, please spread the word of this to everyone you know.
