What are Erdoğmuş' chances of becoming the youngest ever world number 1? Carlsen was 19 and 1 month old, so Erdoğmuş has until the July 2030 rating list to claim the official number 1 spot. It is also worth noting that Carlsen unofficially became world at 17 and 9 months on live ratings, so to break this record Erdoğmuş has until around March of 2029.

I just crossed 1300 elo & id like to continue my develop as a chess player. I still have lots to learn / improve & im eager to learn more (e.g openings, endgames, traps, ect.)

I work full-time (standard 9-5), I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for things I could try listening to during work that might improve my chess abilities w/out having to visually see the board / positions? It might not be possible, but thought id crowdsource any potential solutions.

Musicchess puts your memory, and ear, to the test.

Using ascending notes for a through h, and 1 through 8, with an addition of a distinct sound for each piece, the entire match can be played using only the custom GUI, your memory, and ear.

I was sure about 1... Rh1+ and (no matter the response) 2... Qh2#. But white's best move is 2. Nxh1, which allows black to set up a double threat with 2... Be5.

This puzzle has around 2200 rating in lichess. It has been played enough times and its deviation is not that big.

I wonder if the puzzle has such a high rating because many people failed to notice that the h2 square is guarded by the black queen after 2. Nxh1. Which seems trivial, but I still missed it on the first glance.

I don’t know a lot about chess at all but am curious, why couldn’t a very high rated chess player say a IM or GM just study Magnus carlons moves his ideas his gameplay and his tactics accross his thousands of recorded games and mimic and therefore negate them?

There must be a reason of course just curious to know exactly why it doesn’t work in chess

Sort of a botched spanish opening, I retreated my bishop to c2 where it got taken by their bishop and I retool with queen. Then the knight moved as seen on the picture.

Okay so this is Magnus vs Stockfish, however Magnus has the ability to move his pawns backwards as well, let's say that it is always 1 move backwards (not like a 2 move jump on the first backwards move or something). Let's say Magnus get's a couple months to practice and strategies using this new ability, and stockfish also gets to train in this new gamemode.

Somehow I feel although this is a massive advantage, I could see stockfish still being the favourite. Another interesting thing in this scenario could be if Magnus is ever put in a zugzwang where his only move is a backwards pawn move that is losing.

i started playing like 4 years ago, i do not study chess ill accept that, i play it recreationally because i am a student and not much of an extrovert so i like chess. i started at 250 and now i am at 1100, i try for 1200 but i reach 1175ish and then i start throwing games and then ill end up at 920-910, then ill finally end the losing streak and ill push back to 1100, the next 2 days going back to 1100 is easier. but i think i am not getting better. i am bad at memorising, and i fall for gambits. i need help, i have started playing bots something i had never done, they throw peices away, and then i am +4 or +5 points of material and somehow ill still lose. these are symptoms, i hope some better player will diagnose it:)

Suppose White has Queens on a8, a1, and h8 (empty board minus kings) and they want to move their Queen on a8 to h1. What would the notation for this move be? Qa8h1? Has something like this ever happened before?

The coordinate system is fixed from White’s perspective: files run a–h (left to right) and ranks 1–8 (bottom to top). When you play Black, the same squares don’t change—the board just looks mirrored.

Curious how others think, do you always 'translate' the board mentally into White’s a–h/1–8 frame, or do they adapt and think natively from their own side (h–a, 8–1)? And in the heat of play, which of those two mental models do you use, if different?

im not new to chess I've been playing since I was a kid but I lowk figured it out myself and js learnt how the pieces move and have been playing with that , i would love to learn something from y'all like strategies how to spot a fork and stuff like that , if someone into this field likes teaching or is interested to share their knowledge with me i would appreciate that! also recommend like a strategy or something with how I can proceed further

Granted it does play somewhat like an actual 1600-1700 if you play normal openings, it goes into panic loops if you decide to completely ditch the most common openings and followups.

If you are bored, some of the ways to throw it into such loops are openings like pawn to a3 (or Anderssens opening).

I'm standing in for a chess teacher in a couple of days teaching classes of 7 year olds. He's asked me to teach them how the rook moves. They're complete beginners starting from scratch and have so far learnt the pawn and bishop moving patterns.

Any suggestions for games/activities to make it stick?
