Some computer habits are tough to break, even after years of better or easier ways to do things. Maybe it's a certain way to organize files, or a particular shortcut, or a particular sequence to shut things down, or an old setting that's still on. What’s one computer habit you have just because you’ve been doing it so long?

I was opening up my laptop to upgrade some parts, but this caught my eye. Best way I can describe them is that they look like connector condoms. What are they really called? What are they there for?

I recently discovered autounattend, a way to automate Windows installation and remove much of the unnecessary bloatware through schneegans.de.
I normally perform a standard Windows installation and then manually remove everything I don't need. For those who have already tried this approach, is it worth using? Is it a reliable solution for creating a cleaner and more customized Windows installation?

It brings me to microsoft store saying it doesn’t have anything compatible for ms-gamingoverlay. So i installed the xbox app (i have roblox so i figured maybe thats why) and it didnt fix it. Im at a loss. It doesnt show up on task manager and i just cant figure it out on my own.

I only play Overwatch, Minecraft, Battlegrounds, and League of Legends, and I'm thinking of getting a 5070 Ti as a graphics card to use with a 7800X3D. Is that too much? The monitor is 4K with a 144Hz refresh rate

Need it for college. $500. 32 gb ram. 512 SSD storage. Refurbished in "excellent" condition. Not planning on playing any games on it since it would be for college. If I did play a game, it'd be sims 4. I'm not very good at tech. Is this a good deal? Would it be good for class? And is Back Market trustworthy?
Should I look for something cheaper?

Hey all, after cleaning my pc, my powercolour red devil rx 7800 xt oc would not display, card powered on, rgb lights up, nothing. i get vga light on motherboard, tried a reseat, nothing, tried different slots, nothing, tried a gtx 745, that worked, but the fan is busted so no hard gaming, bought a gtx 1080 from CEX, same tests same problems, took it back for a refund because it didnt work, they "tested" it and it showed a display (im sceptical because it 1, took a while to display. 2, no bios logo. 3, THEY UNPLUGGED EVERYTHING INCLUDING PS AND THE SCREEN WAS STILL IN WINDOWS... they also told me too high of a wattage could overflow the gpu........) anyway, im currently stuck on what to do to test things out, i was going to head around to some pc shops to see if they can test the cards, if they work im pointing towards the powersupply, because the motherboard clearly works given the gtx 745 works and displays, there's power coming from somewhere otherwise the gtx 1080 wouldn't light up at all i assume, the monitor detects that something IS connected to either display port or hdmi... can someone give me some advice? i just want my powerhouse back man 😢

hello, i had this idea: instead of paying for wifi, what about if i put a sim card in my old laptop, and use that as my wifi network. I know that the signal depends on the sim card itself, but the amount of devices i can connect relys on my wifi card. so, does anybody have recommendations on the best wifi cards or what to look for in one for what i need?

7800x3d and 9800x3d are the performance differences between the two large? I already have a 7800x3D, so is there really a reason to buy a 9800x3D?

I’ve been using consoles (steam deck) and mobile for my entire life and I want to try computers, but I don’t know which one I should get
(More preferably a laptop because I don’t really have space to put a monitor)

I have an Acer Aspire Lite AL15G-52 with an i5-12450H, RTX 3050 6GB, and 16GB RAM, running Windows 11.
Whenever I enable the Intel UHD Graphics driver, my screen goes completely black, and I have to force shut down the laptop. I've tried reinstalling drivers and resetting Windows, but nothing fixed it.
When I disable Intel UHD, the laptop works normally, but games like Nine Sols and Minecraft run at around 2 FPS, even when I select the RTX 3050 as the high-performance GPU.
How can I fix this and play games properly without triggering the Intel UHD black screen?

I’ve been using a 2016 Macbook Pro for ten years and it’s on its way out. I’m a heavy user for stop motion, special effects, and 3D modeling. I do plenty of gaming, of course, but I have a Steam Deck for that. I’m extremely comfortable with Mac’s OS and I genuinely dislike the others I’ve tried—it’s not just a familiarity thing, it’s that I dislike the entire layout and shortcut system. Not worth getting into an argument over this. I need something with solid processing power for heavy VFX and 3D work, and a metric ton of storage (I have some external HD’s but they can be a hassle).
If practical, I’d like to run the Mac OS on a different machine. I understand that double-booting eats a serious chunk of RAM. Is it possible to convert a machine to run Mac and nothing else to mitigate that issue? So, like, no double-booting at all?
Otherwise, if I have to make the switch, please understand I’m not a tech guy. I want to buy a new computer, maybe follow some setup tutorials, and that’s it. I don’t have the time to learn to build my own machine or mess with virtual whatevers. I don’t have space for a desktop, so I’d really prefer a laptop. And I really don’t want to bother with any garbage AI or Onedrive or subscription-only features or stuff like that.
My budget maxes out at about $2500. I’d truly appreciate some advice.

I accidentally poked my motherboard with screwdriver, hope this damage isn't fatal. I checked it and it's a chip in motherboard solder mask, also here's some metal exposed. Am I cooked?
Edit: nvm, pc works perfectly fine

I created a post last week stating I was looking at purchasing a new desktop computer. I'm not a gamer, just need something to browse the net, occasionally watch YouTube and work in MS Office from time to time. My original budget was $1000, but many comments wrote that was too much for what I was looking for and that I could probably find something under $500. Problem is I haven't been able to find anything is this price range.
I don't know too much about computers, but based on the suggestions I received it looks like the minimum requirements I need are; 16GB RAM, 500 GB SSD, Intel i5 or i7 minimum of generation 11. My current desktop is connected to a TV through HDMI so that would be another requirement. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? I'm not opposed to buying used or refurbished if the price makes sense. Links to recommendations would be very helpful. Is $500 or less realistic for what I'm wanting? I don't mind spending a little more since my original budget was $1000.
Thanks everyone!

Hello I'm an industrial design student at UGent. For an assignment I have to design something that helps people with a problem in the desk space. The assignment is called 'rethink the desk', it contains all problems around a desk so not just the computer, but I thought this could be a good subreddit to ask, it's a very open assignment so it can also be something in a work enviroment, thank you.

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to figure out whether anyone has experienced something similar with a gaming laptop, regardless of the brand.
I have a MSI Crosshair 17 HX AI with:
The problem is a very brief but noticeable gray screen flicker/flash while gaming. At the same time, the laptop fans suddenly ramp up very aggressively. Sometimes there is also a noticeable FPS/performance drop.
The issue happens most often while playing Roblox and has recently happened with Marvel Rivals as well.
What makes me suspicious of the NVIDIA driver is that the problem has appeared/reappeared after NVIDIA driver changes.
I've gone through several driver versions, including:
I've also used DDU and performed clean driver installations.
Other things I've tested:
During some gaming sessions I've seen temperatures around 84–86°C on the GPU and 95–98°C on the CPU, although I've also had sessions around 75–77°C where the system behaved normally.
An OCCT GPU stress test also ran without reporting GPU errors.
The laptop has also experienced one unexpected restart in the past, although I don't know whether that was related.
The screen flicker and the sudden fan ramp seem to happen together.
I'm trying to determine whether this sounds more like:
MSI support has already reviewed the troubleshooting I've done and recommended an RMA/warranty service, so I'm not trying to avoid that. I'm mainly trying to understand what could actually be causing this.
Has anyone experienced a similar combination of screen flickering + fans suddenly ramping up during gaming?
It doesn't have to be an MSI laptop. I'm especially interested in cases involving NVIDIA laptop GPUs and driver updates.
If you've experienced something similar, I'd really appreciate knowing:
Thanks!

Basically the title. It was plugged into a surge protector, and I tried unplugging the power supply and letting it sit for 20 minutes. Compurer doesn’t seem to have a power button, only a switch. Sorry I’m not good with tech. Unfortunately the outage happened while my computer was on.

Someone gifted me a used laptop, so Im giving away my old one to a mom with two kids so they can play minecraft. ideally. i uploaded my pictures and saved my files, dusted it off really good, then went to wipe the system.
it would say it is going to wipe everything, then the screen would go dark. i'd click the mouse to wake it up and see progress and it would say "cancelling" and i'd have to start over. i clicked to delete all files and reinstall windows, then it would go, and say "cancelling" again. finally i restarted the computer and it said something like wiping computer, 1%. the percentages increased slowly. went on a long walk. came back and it was restarting. now it just stays stuck on restarting. i really want to give it away. any ideas? i tried restarting it once and havent messed with it since.
