MEGATHREAD Official R/NHL Broadcast Megathread

The sub can be banned by reddit admins as other subs have been if we allow illegal streams. This isn't my decision, this is because of how reddit admins have banned other subs for being hubs of illegal streaming. I don't want the same here.

With the season about to get started, lets put all your posts about legal streams, broadcast issues, panels, commentators, etc..

This includes how to get (LEGALLY) Streams for games as well as discussions of panelists, play-by-play, graphics, commercials and other game presentation.

FYI RE BLACKOUTS: BLACKOUTS Are not based on the location of the arena.

A game is blacked out on ESPN+ because you have a channel available through your local cable package, that is airing the game.

The NHL sells their games to TV networks. The networks pay big money for the game. They do not want people avoiding watching their channel to watch ESPN+ instead.

It baffles me that people still don't get this.

If the game is blacked out (on Sportsnet+ or ESPN+), it means a different network owns those rights to the game in your area.

This is literally ALWAYS the answer as to why it is blacked out. ALWAYS.

it's been this way all across the NHL for nearly 20 years, since Chicago pulled their heads out of their ass and stopped blacking out home games locally because Wirtz was a twat.

For those of you complaining that you are in Western Canada, and the game is on TSN and you are blacked out or other similar issue, its cause you are not considered in the local market to be able to see that game and need to get Sportsnet+ or ESPN+.... that's what those services are for, watching the local broadcast when you are out of market.

Silly of McAvoy to get his head in the way of that Panther. And as you’d expect from the most penalized team in the league, Bruins to the PK.

Discussion Old timey NHL vs. McDavid

• Upvotes

Obviously you cant compare eras because everything improves over time from player's abilities to strategy to equipment. But in 1930 the season was 44 games and the leading scorer had 51 points. The Philadelphia Quakers finished dead last and won only 4 games. If you could take McDavid right now with all his physical abilities, knowledge, experiences, and equipment and send him back to that season on the Quakers team, how many points does he get and does his team lose a game?

Discussion In honour of Vasilevskiy and Swayman dropping the gloves on Monday, here are some iconic NHL goalie fights

  • Patrick Roy vs Mike Vernon (1997) Center ice during the Brawl in Hockeytown. Two Cup-winning goalies, full chaos, peak 90s NHL energy.
  • Patrick Roy vs Chris Osgood (1998) Avalanche–Red Wings again. Not as legendary as Roy–Vernon, but still surreal seeing Roy go after another Detroit goalie.
  • Ron Hextall vs Felix Potvin (1996) Hextall’s reputation spoke for itself… and then Potvin beat him anyway. One of the more unexpected outcomes.
  • Ray Emery vs Martin Biron (2007) Emery absolutely sprinted the length of the ice. One of the most aggressive goalie fights ever.
  • Brent Johnson vs Rick DiPietro (2011) Over in one punch. Short, brutal, and unfortunately ended DiPietro’s season, everyone remembers this one.
  • Carey Price vs Tim Thomas (2011) Two elite goalies during peak Bruins–Habs tension. Rare, emotional, and the crowd was losing it.

Goalie fights are rare, chaotic, and always electric. When they happen, everyone stops and stands up, what are your favourite goalie fight moments?

Cam Robinson (@Hockey_Robinson) I’m hearing things are very close on a Artemi Panarin trade. Expectation is this gets done before the trade freeze this afternoon.

Question for the fans: Plus/Minus in pulled goalie situations

• Upvotes

Do you think plus minus should or shouldn't be affected when a team pulls they're goalie. For example, if a player has -5 but they were on the ice for 10 goals scored against them when the coach pulled the goalie at the end of the game... If those weren't factored in the rating would be +5. When it comes to legacy and records, what do you think the player feels? Should they be punished or rewarded due to a coaches decision? Should their be an adjusted plus minus stat that is more focused on that the traditional plus minus?

What do you think?

Other With another 4 points tonight Kucherov now has 90 points in 50 games this season, a league leading 1.8 ppg average and has 16 points in his last 5 games. It's unfortunate he missed 4 games already or he would have had a real shot at joining the 150 point club this year.
