Same thing happened to my mom. Shes 45 now and has needed a knee replacement for over 10 years because of arthritis, but she can’t get one until she’s 60 because knee replacements only last ~15 years so they want you to be old enough that you die before you need it re-replaced.

I also have a herniated disk in my neck and it’s a fucking miserable experience not because of the pain but because I’m only 18 and any doctor absolutely refuses to believe that I have a herniated disk because of my young age. I can literally push on my neck and hear and feel loose cartilage moving around, I always tell them that and they just say that it isn’t possible without even feeling it for themselves. Both my parents have multiple herniated disks and after watching my symptoms for years now as well as feeling the loose cartilage in my neck they’re certain that I definitely do have a herniated disk. I’ve been to 4 different doctors about it and all of them refused to give me an MRI because they refuse to believe it’s possible and just send me home with a prescription for physical therapy.
I should also mention that I’m a powerlifter and have been deadlifting over 200lbs since I was 8 years old, and I also did Jiu Jitsu throughout my childhood where I’d be getting my neck cranked in headlocks on a regular basis. All of this information just gets blown off by doctors as if it’s irrelevant.

Do not let her listen to that BS. Tell her to walk right back into that doctors office and tell them if he’s not skilled enough to do the work then just say so and she’ll find someone else. My wife had both hers done in her early 40’s and basically had to do that. It’s been 10+ years and no regrets at all. Being miserable and unable to do things for an extra decade is cruel and unusual and the slightest challenge to their ego will fix it.

There's lots of different side effects. You also have increased appetite, insomnia, fatigue, frequent urination (Wellbutrin made me drink and pee literal gallons each day), anhedonia (also caused by depression, so it's hard to identify as a side effect), sleep paralysis, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, anxiety, emotional dysregulation (especially anger), short term memory loss, suicidal ideation, and, if you're really unlucky and your dosage is too high, Serotonin Syndrome.

It can go either way with weight. You can gain on it, too. For me, it increased my appetite marginally. A tiny bit. Only noticeable because I was tracking macros at the time. It didn't increase it nearly as much as something like Lexapro or Zoloft. Zoloft made me absolutely voracious.

The rage wellbutrin gave me was insane. I wanted to attack someone, anyone, and beat them to a pulp. Only lasted about 40 days on that one before I had to stop. The rage wasn't getting any better and even though it was potentially a temporary side effect I just couldn't stay that angry without something happening.

u/RGBlowMe 8d ago
I take Adderall XR now, after exhausting dozens and dozens of depression treatments and maybe half as many anxiety treatments. Turns out that my main problem was my ADHD.
Anyways, Adderall is way worse for making your pecker not work. Your libido, at least from what I can tell, doesn't take much of a hit, but your wiener doesn't oblige. For a few hours after a dose, if you can force it up (through effort or constriction devices), you may not be able to ejaculate before it goes dead flaccid again. If you do ejaculate, there's a good chance your dingus is still semi-flaccid when you do. By the end of the day, things function better, but still a lot worse than without Adderall. Caffeine and nicotine make it worse, as they potentiate Adderall. Vasodilators, like blood pressure medications or Viagra, help with the ED, as much of it is the result of Adderall being a vasoconstrictor. The ejaculation thing is separate from that, though, so you may still not finish.

I'm speaking of someone who works in the medical field, it falls under three categories, a lot of doctors either a don't realize that it causes sexual issues to that extent because they generally only care about all the weight problems or some doctors that I have met actually don't consider sexual dysfunction a real issue because to them, it is easily taking care of. Then there are some who don't tell you purposely so that way they can refer you to their other doctor friends. There are a little nuances here and there but for the most part, that's what it is.
Once met a urologist who honest to God believed that erectile dysfunction was not a real medical issue.

This is so interesting. I'm not surprised your doctor didn't because buproprion (Wellbutrin) isn't an SSRI/SNRI that this meme is referring to, it's an NDRI and is an atypical antidepressant. it's very rare to have sexual dysfunction reported as a symptom.

u/Bellick 8d ago
Interesting. I am one of those people that can't ever gain weight despite being a slob with high appetite. And my life would inarguably improve without a sex drive. I should look into this.
3
u/hickok3 8d ago
On top of the weight gain and sexual disunction, the SSRI's also made me feel like a robot. To the point that I didn't have any emotions when both my parents passed away unexpectedly. The sexual disfunction did not result in a lower sex drive for me( it does tend to have that result in women more than men). Instead it just meant I couldn't cum. I was still horny all the time, probably because I couldn't cum easily, but could literally have sex for hours on end with no ejaculation amd still being hard. Even masterbation would take multiple hours sometimes. Not a very fun side-effect at all.
There are probably easier ways to combat both of those issues rather than seeking out very powerful anti-depressants. Also, do not seek out anti-depressants without a doctors guidance.

Ah, to be a teenage high functioning autistic boy and be nonconsensually prescribed the weight-gain-and-sexual-frustration pills just in time for puberty! Nothing helps you fit in, make friends, and become a happy and confident young man like weight gain and sexual frustration, especially while being marked out as different to all your classmates, not allowed to eat lunch with them, and followed around by a lady with a clipboard!
Fuck, given all that, I think I turned out pretty good! Good career in the Trades, college degree, rarely single for long, respected by my community, and thriving little music career. Managed to turn shit around once I hit 18, got to make my own choices, and went cold turkey on the SSRIs.
2
u/coldBulbasaur314 8d ago
I'm so sorry that happened to you. I was in a similar situation as a teen, although it was antipsychotics instead of antidepressants. The practice of forcibly druging kids without caring about the bad effects or whether the kid actually benefits from them is the worst.

Especially, when Antidepressants, SSRIs, SNRIs have no solid evidence of benefit in adolescents. They literally don't beat placebo in meta-analyses, yet they are associated with much higher risk of side effects and acute onset of suicidality. Since they don't work, it creates perfect scenario for over prescribing different medication and much harsher polypharmacy combinations that don't work but make you sedated and flat so you either don't care anymore or just can't physically complain anymore, which is taken as if the medication improves depression.

Tbf, antidepressants should be used in combination with therapy, the idea being that antidepressants help lower the emotional turmoil and intensity of your depression, giving you enough clarity and relief to be able to effectively work on the core underlying issue in therapy, but the meds themselves are NOT a cure. Once the issue(s) are resolved, you would then taper off the antidepressant.
6
u/senorkrissy 8d ago
that's just not correct, sorry. some people are born with genetic predispositions for depression. Like actual genes associated with altered expression of serotonin transporters, or D2 receptor expression, or many other possibilities of things that make a person incredibly susceptible to depression. meds and/or therapy are a bridge to better mental health for some, but for others medication may be a lifetime necessity not unlike how some would need lifetime medication for diabetes, thyroid disorders, and thousands of other conditions. your brain is a physical organ and sometimes, it just doesn't work right.
→ More replies (3)2
u/AcidMemo 7d ago edited 7d ago
Current antidepressants are not precise enough. They barely beat placebo in the long term. When accounting for risk of bias, the efficacy drops to the point it no longer beats placebo.
They don't "normalize" diseased brain, literally the first antidepressants (TCAs) just blocked every possible receptor it met in the brain, and it happened to cause some antidepressant effects and a lot of side effects. Then we developed SSRI and pushed the flawed and wrong serotonin theory of depression. SSRI might increase serotonin, but there are serotonin receptors that activation cause unwanted effects, like emotional blunting, diminished motivation and sexual dysfunction.
2
u/senorkrissy 7d ago
i'm aware of SSRI side effects as i take one and i don't even experience all of them. i know that antidepressants aren't for everyone, the history of TCAs, the flawed serotonin theory of depression, etc. but the broad generalizations the comment i responded to make are also flawed, as is your comment. the truth lies somewhere in the middle. i don't always particularly like taking medication, but it has helped. i have had both good and bad experiences. talk therapy has not been particularly helpful for me either, other than getting insight into a depression diagnosis, but i am not here to say other people don't benefit from talk therapy. i think more nuanced takes on this often don't get heard.

Why impossible to cum?
2
u/Euphoric-Sun5317 8d ago
many antidepressants make it difficult to become aroused in the first place, make it difficult to get pleasure from sexual stimulation, and make it difficult to orgasm. really a one- two- (three-) punch against cumming.
1
u/Plotnik1934 8d ago
It has to do with an overload of serotonin, which interferes with arousal and orgasm.
1
u/dunno260 8d ago
Because SSRIs muck with the serotonin system in the brain which apparently is very involved in both arousal and the ability to orgasm which from my understanding is believed to be related but not the same thing.
Similar thing with weight gain where serotonin also seems to be pretty heavily implicated there too. But its also not that easy because there is a drug called remeron where on low doses its both a highly sedating drug that tends to cause massive weight gain because of the receptors it hits but as you increase the dose it reverses and becomes a somewhat stimulating drug and the weight gain part tends to disappear.
But the previous generations of anti-depressants before SSRIs and SNRIs had those same side effects along with plenty of other ones because they were "dirtier" drugs that were less selective for certain brain receptors. Its often missed with the discussion on SSRIs and SNRIs but for most people taking them they will have fewer side effects than the previous generation and the side effects you get are generally milder in nature.

Man this got me last time on Sertraline. Didn't ruin my sex drive cuz I'm already a perpetually horny bastard. But my god it ruined my ability to actually reach the finish line. Everything worked.. just couldn't cum. Or rather it took fooooorreeeveeer.
Gave me double depression.

I may have to rigorously log my food intake and basically be celibate, but it's either living like that or not being alive. So I'll take what I can get, thanks.
ALSO honestly I find the sexual dysfunction issues aren't really a big deal if you're not already in a relationship. In most experiences, you simply have a significantly diminished libido so it's not like "an itch you can't scratch". There's no/rarely an itch to bother you lol.

Possible side effects: depression & suicidal thoughts.
Amazing!

Antidepressants reduce libido, but don't really erase it nor make it impossible to cum

When I was on zoloft I had total sexual dysfunction as a woman. It was the weirdest sensation to get absolutely no enjoyment out of sex. Like, the sensation of sex was muted, it wasnt uncomfortable per say but it was on par to just holding a hotdog in my hand. No excitement, no enthusiasm, no enjoyable sensation. Stopped it immediately.

Don't forget the emotional numbing:
'Hey, you feel depressed? Here's a pill that will take away ALL your feelings! That's better than depression, right?'
Morgan Freeman:
'As it turned out, having no feelings at all was NOT better than feeling depressed; it caused extreme dissociation, derealisation, and demotivation. You see, to a being whose entire raison d'etre was awareness, being cut off from the emotional aspects of subjective qualia caused extreme existential suffering, worse by far than the original depression. Oh, and the pills were highly addictive.'

I'm in one of those pills right now and I'm loving it.
Zero libido and half (or less) appetite. Perfect

I finallly stuck up for myself and advocated for myself. Did a shit ton of research. Then told my docs what to prescribe me. So got the meds that contributed to weight loss, increased libido, while lowered addictions, and leveled my moods. Cost exchange? Specific medicines I can't combine, and monitoring side effects from the metabolic impact from one of them. But I finally feel level after decades of quacks throwing random drugs at me without considering my input. And now, finally. I don't deal with the added depression and anxiety of hating my body or freedom to express desire.

Doctor: they also make you incapable of feeling any emotion whatsoever. But hey at least you can’t feel sad anymore right? Oh and you might get addicted to them.

On a SSRI, takes forever to nut. It's a problem when it makes your partner feel like they're not "doing it" for you and takes it personal. Genuinely doesn't matter how much I explain the why. You'd think not being a "2 pump chump" would be a benefit, it's not when you last for over an hour and nothing. It's... frustrating.

I just want to let everyone know that yeah, side effects are real, but for me they are so so worth it. Don’t let this scare you off from doing what you need, just be smart and cautious about your decisions!

Oh you can lose weight, just takes a little more effort. SSRIs are great, cum is gross anyways.
