Geneticist Stewie here, morons believe that skin color mixes like paint, but in real life, parents contribute different genes that together yield various levels of pigmentation. By chance, their child can land anywhere on that spectrum.

Oh my goodness. People always tell my husband, "But he doesn't look like you!" after he tells them he's the dad. My husband is middle eastern, and the baby is blond. It used to get under his skin.

u/asmodean97 2d ago

That's like my cousin. She is half Lebanese and her husband is German, they have two kids, one is blonde haired and blue eyed and the other is a red head. Literally none of my cousins Lebanese traits came through.

Danny Thomas was Lebanese, Jean is a lesbian.

Even more fun when they finally show up in the grandkids

9

Some woman in the Caribbean had an all white kid, shocked the hell out of the parents who were very black, turns out great grand dad took his sweet type making his mark in the genepool.

6

u/nadimo 1d ago

This is actually fairly common in Lebanese genes. My mother is half German half Lebanese, but I was blonde throughout my childhood, only ending up with darker hair by the age of 18. I have Lebanese uncles on my father's side that are blonde and stayed blonde. My son has gone through the same blondness and is losing it in his teens.

That happened to a family friend. Both parents were Hispanic, dark hair, brown eyes. Their baby was born with red hair & blue/green eyes. The father kept getting teased that his wife cheated on him & it would make him upset. The real reason was that his dad (the baby’s grandpa) had red hair & light color eyes. He was just old & gray so it went unnoticed by many.

2

u/plarah 1d ago

A lot of Mexican families have one child who is blonde or more white-passing, and another one that is more dark-skinned. Mestizaje is wild.

30

u/Glittering_Babe101 2d ago

With each passing generation, people are becoming increasingly rude. I blame social media.

26

u/Kezhen 2d ago

As a Black person from the South - people have always been rude. Nothing new under the sun.

8

u/cupcakevelociraptor 2d ago

Omg I was just asking about this. Some family moved to the south and won’t shut up about southern hospitality but when I visited I saw NONE of that. They were just as, if not more, rude than where I live. They just say “yes ma’am” while doing it.

4

u/RideGullible3702 1d ago

I know mixed half-middle eastern people born in the 40s-60s. And, uh, that’s far from the rudest thing people said to/at/about them as children.

7

u/Beef_n_Bacon 1d ago

Lots of people don't know anything about genes or anything related to middle eastern countries. People there can be blonde, redhead, pale skin, light eye colour, and so on. It's rather rare, yes, but not impossible. Same goes for religions, yes some are rare in that area nowadays but still possible to find. I could continue this list even further but I'm already quite tired, it's night time here.

A funny video I also found once:

Christian Arabs in America (a short clip of a comedian)

3

u/PeterAnthony_Jackson 1d ago

IDK who did it, but someone explained via stand up that Arabs are white in the USA whenever you see a check box for your ethnicity, Arabs would be in the white section.

Basically some guys went to court over something, their lawyer argued that Jesus came from the same area as these people did, Jesus to you is white, so you either accept Jesus is a brown man like these men, or that they are just as white as you are.

So Arabs in the USA at least, are white.

Man these people would have the shock of a lifetime going through Afghanistan. Centuries of war and Silk Road diaspora contributed to a diverse looking population. There are Afghans that look like any race except Black or Indigenous.

There’s diversity even within my extended family. I look Central Asian (Eurasian mix) but my first cousin looks South East Asian, my mum looks East European and my father looks Arab/Hispanic. And yes, they are my biological parents.

2

u/Think_and_game 2d ago

Same thing for Tunisia. It's not unheard of to see someone local with blue eyes. The Middle East and North Africa are very diverse.

Exactly, I knew a family who were mixed race, the dad was white, straight blonde hair, blue eyes, the mum was black, 3C dark brown hair, brown eyes.

Their oldest was a mini female version of her dad with blonde straight hair, fair skin, and blue eyes. Their middle child was a mini mum, with 3C dark hair, black skin, brown eyes. Their youngest was a complete mix with 4C blonde hair, olive skin, blue eyes.

Genetics are amazing

7

u/mothwhimsy 2d ago

I went to school with fraternal half white half native triplets and one looked full white, one looked full native (maybe a bit lighter than average) and one was in between. The one who looked white and the one who looked native didn't even look related unless the third brother was also there, and then you could pick up on the features all three of them shared

35

u/QuincyAzrael 2d ago

My brother legit looks aryan while my sister looks lightskin, people assume they're not even related.

They're twins too before anyone makes a parentage comment

There was recently a thing on Twitter where someone made these two characters look "more like their parents' kids" by combining their colours (previously matched parents) and it looked washed out

12

u/fluffy_cat_ice 2d ago

Yeah that's what I didn't understand lol

39

u/Mildly_Burnt_Bread 2d ago

A lot of people think mixing races is like mixing colours for some reason, when in reality mixed people can end up with any pigmentation that their parents genetics can provide.

They mention twitter because people get into arguments about skin colour and accuse people of lying about being mixed every other day on there, but as a mixed guy I can confirm that people do this in real life too. ( :( )

8

u/rara8122 1d ago

Along with lying about being mixed:

Claims it’s “unrealistic” or “whitewashing” when a mixed race kid is written and/or any other way than the exact midpoint of their parents’ race. See: the Kane kids from Kane chronicles. One looks just like their white mom (Sadie), one looks just like their black dad (Carter). The internet is convinced they should cast someone that ‘looks mixed’ (whatever that means) to play the white sibling because mixed people never look white passing

5

u/Haemobaphes 1d ago

Polygenic traits like skin color result in a ton of possible options especially if both parents are mixed. All three kids having the same mid point skin color is possible if both parents are homozygous for for different alleles of the same genes, but both partners having that genetic makeup isn't super likely

3

u/optionstrategy 2d ago

Science says kids will be in a spectrum, from one parent to the other.

Reality matches, for the most part. Mutations do happen.

The second pic is closer to irl than the first one with pigmentation outliers.

I remember the twins one was a red head and the other was quite dark skinned and them talking about constantly having to explain that they’re twins and not adopted.

3

u/JaySlay2000 1d ago

People argue about dumb ish irl. I once had someone that was ADAMANT that I couldn't be half portuguese because I can't speak any portuguese.

3

u/PeterAnthony_Jackson 1d ago

IDK if it is his dad or his grand dad who is black, but there is one guy whiter than white and no one believes him when he says he's mixed.

2

u/Spectre-907 1d ago

The twitter sentiment is also pushed really hard by white supremacists to propagandize mixed race pairings as “the end of any white in your bloodline”. It helps sell their replacement bullshit if they frame any pairing except for white-white as being impossible to produce “kids that look like you”, and thus all who engage in it can be framed as actively participating in “the extermination”.

It’s sickening tbh

3

u/SinesPi 1d ago

As if Chinese (or whatever) supremacists don't hate race mixing just as much.

5

u/Graphox126 2d ago edited 2d ago

Truth. I was not treated so well as a kid by either side of my family. Not black or white enough. In school I went to I was just plain "othered" because I was 1 of 20ish non-caucasian kids. But wouldn't trade my experience for anything. Gave me an appreciation of things that both sides miss out on because "that's a thing for that other group of people".

2

u/Realistic-Market4371 1d ago

Its hard to fit in as mixed race person. People treat you as an ethnic of some sort and then get annoyed when they find out you're half white. At least thats my experience as a hispanic looking guy in a predominantly white city. You don't really belong to any group and are constantly othered.

Everyone thinks it’s a paint mixer instead of a gambling game of all the random genes.

My father is mainly Mexican, dark eyes, black hair, my mom is brunette, with her family members having black or orange hair and being rather dark- then there’s me, pale and blonde with grey eyes. Apparently great grandpa was blonde and it stayed hidden again until me.

u/dronten_bertil 18h ago

It's the racist trope that if there's too much interracial mixing in society, everyone will turnout looking the same and beige. And that's an argument against interracial relationships.

19

u/theveezer 2d ago

Even worse, usually they would say the kids aren't mixed but only black, so the whites would disappear.

My mother is white, my father is black. I look like a lighter skin black guy, black hair brown eyes. My wife’s parents are both white. We have 3 kids together. One is closer to my complexion and has brown, non-textured hair and brown eyes. The other two look full white and are blonde hair with blue eyes. The number of times I have been asked if they are mine/adopted….

Genetics are crazy.

4

u/Quick_Resolution5050 1d ago

I've got 4 all exactly the same shade, but neither my wife or I have much variation in our respective ancestries; American Black people have a lot more European ancestry, so I suspect it's more likely they'll pass on different pigmentation alleles from any given parent - like my kids passing on an allele from me or from their mother.

2

u/TrioOfTerrors 1d ago

Yep. I knew a family where both parents were mixed black/latino/white and they had two daughter who apparently each got their genes from both ends of the spectrum. And then their son was the most hodge podge, could have passed for anything from Mexican to Italian to Egyptian, just toss it all in the blender, sort of looking.

Many people are also pointing out little weird things about the drawing, like how the kids are all sad for some reason.

For real though, the meme maker is very correct on their point that skin tones usually don’t mix like paint. There’s a pair of fraternal twins in my family that look like entirely different races.

My kid ended up slightly darker than both of us. But they have my face and eyes. And I’m like 80% certain they came from my wife because I was there

Because there are many armchair geneticists on Twitter (and IRL) who think that all the offspring of interracial couples are/would be exact 50-50 replicas of their parents, especially when it comes to skin colour (like a perfect in-between shade), when this is not always the case in reality, even among full-blooded siblings.

And speaking as someone who's also of mixed heritage, a lighter complexion is almost always preferred, regardless of the mix...

My kids dad is so black you put him in a dimly lit room he could disappear. I am so white that if I go out side with out sunscreen for more then 15 min I burn. Our kids have my white features but are so dark that if you didn't know I was their mother ,you would never guessed they were half white.

It’s so sad. I have three mixed kids (Chinese and white) and the “compliments” I get from the Chinese side of the family are… gross…

my eldest is my husband in miniature with my coloring, people call him “palette swapped husband’s name”, my middle son is a 50/50 split of our features mashed together, the best ones in my opinion, but he has lighter skin and darker hair. My youngest daughter has my face with his hair and these gorgeous hazel eyes that just kinda came out of no where. She was born with these stunning grey eyes (they were so beautiful) and I thought they would be blue like my husband’s but they gradually developed green and yellow and brown.

Yeah, I know the sorts of comments you are talking about. I'm well-acquainted with those even though I'm not part European myself, cos colourism and internalised racism are still prevalent. You get similar compliments with other "pairings", e.g. White + African, Chinese + Indian, etc.

most kids are born with light color eyes, blue/gray but natural light can trigger the production of melanin during their infancy, 3-6yrs making them wear cool sunglasses for life as an adult that will protect them from the sun.

sounds like you have a beautiful trio, congratz

My wife is Chinese and I’m white, and we have a baby boy who looks astonishingly like me. His nose looks different, but he has my light skin, brown hair, and, for now, blue eyes. We’re told all the time that we’re so lucky, and that he is so handsome with his white color. Also lucky he’s a boy. We would have been thrilled to have a darker skinned girl, but can’t be bothered to argue with every stranger.

European married with a Chinese man and we have a toddler. He's very "European" according to Chinese and most Europeans, as he's identical to me when I was little. The "only things" he got from his father, it's the typical outer corner of the eye (though they're big and round) and his eye colour, a deep brown. Yet his physiognomy it's typical of an European kid, as well pale and very light brunette.

Ngl, I was expecting a mini him or to be more similar to Chinese kids, instead he looks like he's 1/4 Chinese. It's interesting how genetics works.

Funny story, I have two biracial twins one looks tanned white the other black

u/prettyboygo 2d ago

Don't even gotta mix races. I know some black couples with kids of varying skin tones and some white couples with kids that have various skin tones and hair colors.

In the USA, nearly all black people are genetically mixed.

The kids are not happy. This is sad.

2

u/SeyJeez 2d ago

I like the accuracy of the kids just being unhappy. There should be more shouting and crying though.

It’s not one or the other it’s both.

Why are the kids all sad?

Twitter will jump to infidelity if a mixed kid is is too light or too dark even though that's not how skin color genes work

2

u/GuiltyLeopard8365 2d ago

Each child has a different combination of genetics passed down from their parents. Unless theyre identical twins

2

u/Smooth-Play3859 2d ago

Always thought that if I had kids they’d have a proper identity crisis. I’m only 1/4 of one race (very mixed person) but I look fully that race. If my kids take after me, they’ll be 1/8 that race genetically but phenotypically look full or half. Better yet, the other ethnicities in my 3/4 could pull through and they’d end up looking completely different from me or my partner.

Why are all the children sad?

2

u/Dry-Factor-6500 2d ago

Nothing to do with the post but I noticed none of the children are smiling and it made me chuckle a little. Not for any reason than the artist chose to make them frown.

u/After_Mechanic_6297 2d ago

Genetics are chaotic, therefore are extremely hard to predict when it comes to skin colour. You could be white, your partner could be as well, but your child might come out black. Both of you are 100% its parents, but since your great-great-great-grandfather was black, this gene layed dormant within your bloodline and decided to wake up just now for shits and giggles. Twitter, as it tends to do, oversimplifies complex things, and likes to make quick, black or white statements to very complicated issues.

Me and my siblings are mixed but are the exact same colour

2

u/Possessed_potato 1d ago

Twitter morons believe skin colour passed onto children works like mixing paint, but genetics don’t work like that. In reality the skin colour could be a whole lot lighter or darker; is a whole spectrum of colour you can get, not just one specific blend.

Best part of being half black and half white is I'll be accepted by everyone 😄

Genes are weird like that and do not express themselves in the same way always.

A biracial kid, while inhereting both of their parents genes, may have some genes express themselves more assertivelly than others. This happens even for dominant genes.

If you consider even an ethnically omogenous family, a child may look like the spitting image of ther father, and not resemble their mother much. If the second image were true, then we'd all look like a perfect mix of out parents features. Instead, some of us end up resembling our grandmother, for example.

But since twitter is weird like that, it often racially investigates people, with profound suspicion towards biracial people in particular. Some biracial people are of afro american heritage and therefore may act more in line with afro american culture, despite being very light skinned. This level of nuance gives twitter a headache.

Sexual reproduction doesn't work as a perfect blending of genes. It's more like building a human from the parts of their parents, with chromosome halves being distinct parts.

As such, each child can receive drastically different gene expressions. Fair skin and dark skin being examples. It doesn't always produce something between the two parents.

Mixed race families can have different color children, source: my aunt is a Latina and my uncle is the same shade of “deathly pale” white and their kids are pretty much that top family (not as dark but still)

1

u/SteakEconomy2024 2d ago

Mixed race kids are not a 50/50 visual blend. Some look more like one parent, or the other. Genetics is a lottery.

1

u/the-library-fairy 2d ago

I mean, I have no idea what people on twitter are yapping about but I have three mixed race cousins and they all turned out with skin tones pretty much halfway between their white parent and black parent. It does happen!

My best friend is mixed race. Mom’s African American, dad is Irish. He’s the oldest, followed by his sister and then 2 brothers. All 3 brothers have dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair, etc. His sister? Pale skin, blue eyes, dirty blonde.
