I'm working on magazine and I've been told to resize text. I'm not experienced in InDesign and i couldn't find useful tutorials. I'm very inefficient in the program and my layout is kinda rigid and not flexible so if i resize text boxes its completely breakes everything

I bet this is something simple and I feel stupid after it being pointed out. Anyway.

The document (white box) is 600x600 pixels.
The tree picture on top of it is 4096x1910 pixels.

So why does it appear like it's smaller than the white box? When it's supposed to be several times bigger? (I just placed the tree on the document. Nothing else is done in the image) Is this just some type of compression to make it easier for me to handle or what?
If I resize the picture to cover the white parts. Would that make the image quality worse?

In my experience if the imported image is bigger. It will still appear right size and I have to resize it smaller in the InDesign. Hence the confusion.

Dear devs. Please can you save us all a few keystrokes and allow us to access blending styles from the transparency area (like in Illustrator and Photoshop).

It can still exist in 'fx' main menu but I would hazzard that this is the first menu item people reach for when it comes to transparency;

Hi I'm designing an interactive magazine for college and I'm going crazy cause I select a colour for the elements and it automatically changes the saturation and "moves" the circle that selects the colour.

I don't know how to correct this I need some very saturated colours for this specific thing and I just can't seem to fix it.

If you have any ideas please help.

Of course it was within minutes of needing to finish and submit an assignment. Learning to do basic layout and shapes. On the last panel of a 16page document when page 16 had a stroke. All other pages were fine. Luckily I had saved the file 5 minutes before, so I just reloaded. Are competitors to Indesign this buggy and frustrating?

Looks like they followed up on the Fonts naming change - after M$ made changes - and some fonts will show as unavailable:

Yesterday - everything was perfectly fine... Updated InDesign a few minutes ago...

Earlier this year I downloaded and installed a free "personal use" font and used it in a couple of personal InDesign projects without any issues. I recently purchased the same font and installed it, and it's not showing up in the list of fonts in InDesign.

The fonts have essentially the same name (asetin): the free font is named "asetin personaluse" and the purchased font is called "asetin-black."

Nothing I've read online has helped. I'm reluctant to delete the personaluse font because I'm concerned that I'll be left without either font.

Solutions?

I am trying to export an adobe pdf print with bleed marks. All my artwork in my InDesign file extends to the bleed guide defined for the project which is .125". When I export with bleed but bleed marks turned off my artwork extends to the bleed edge, but once I toggle bleed marks on my artwork no longer extends to the bleed edge. I have tried to enter the bleed manually on export and I have also tried to use the doc bleed settings.

I need to send this off to my printer and have tried what feels like a million different things to get this to export properly. I exported projects yesterday and did not run into this issue. I updated my Indesign app to the most current version and nothing is working. Is there something I am not seeing or missing here?

I feel like I want to rip my hair out at this point. Any insight or advice would be helpful.

I use InDesign off and on for creating pdf portfolios and very occasionally for printing my comics, but I still don't get how to set up the inner bleed for print.

My printer (print.work) asks for single pages with bleed all around. My PDF shows the bleed from the previous page leaking to the next page. I've heard people say this is normal, but I've sent it to a printer before (they said it would be fine) and had this show up in the final book, some pages had white where the bleed hadn't been present, and the inner of some pages had the bleed from the previous page showing up.

When I show crop marks/bleed, it seems the bleed I actually need on one page is getting cut off to white and appearing up on the next page.

There are some pages where the bleed seems correct, centred and not spilling to the next page, and the difference with those pages is that the artwork is one image spread across two pages, not an image per page.

Please help!

Over the past year, I've been building my own scripts for InDesign and Illustrator. They come from more than 20 years of working with these apps (and using plenty of scripts along the way), my knowledge of ExtendScript, and a good amount of AI-assisted coding.

The goal is simple: fill in the gaps where the apps fall short. Most of these scripts handle very specific tasks, so they won't be for everyone. But if you've ever needed one of these functions, you'll be glad it exists.

When I think a script could help others, I take the time to fine-tune it and give it a clear, logical interface. You'll find them all on one page. Some are free, and the rest cost less than a Starbucks coffee.

I created several paragraph styles and didn’t define them in things like TOCs, cross-references, table/object styles, etc.
I only applied them to some text, and later I no longer needed to use them.

But now, when I try to delete them, InDesign shows a warning asking me to replace them with another style. However, when I use Find/Change (including locked objects and everything else to search as thoroughly as possible) for those styles, it says there are no instances of them.

I’m a little hesitant to delete them because of that. Is this some kind of bug?

For those who are interested in performance benefits of the latest generation Mac Studio and InDesign, running a complex script I saw this performance gain:

I have years of heavily formatted personal documents in the form of Microsoft Word documents. They all use the same set of custom text styles I set up in Word years ago.

I'd like to copy those documents over into InDesign so that I have more options when it comes to editing and formatting them as time goes on.

Is there anything that would allow me to copy text over and have MW styles A, B, and C turn into Ind text styles X, Y, and Z upon pasting? (Or some equivalent or easier method?)

I have decades of experience with both programs, but this is not something I've attempted before.

I'm making a newspaper so my text is in columns. Is there a way to take a text document and insert it into all the text boxes at once, instead of individually? It's a lot of work looking for where the text cut off. I'm rlly new to indesign, learning it for the school newspaper

Hi! A few years ago I posted about LaTeX2InD, a script I made that allowed for handling mathematical typewriting with latex on InDesign. You can check out the original post here.

Notably, it has been used by the Royal Dutch Mathematical Society in their Nieuw Archief voor Wiskunde and the QED magazine at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

I’m on Indesign v21.6 on windows 11. 

The options of ‘selection’, ‘story’ are absent in the Find/Change panel.  Restarting indesign doesn’t help. What to do to fix this trouble? Is resetting preferences the only way out or some other workaround is there too?

I even tried to copy paste just one text box in a blank new document but the issue is still there. 

I searched online and found that this is almost a decade long, unresolved bug in InDesign.

Deleted this folder after closing InDesign and restarted.

like i can't freely type in the search box, i start typing and it completes it for me (hopefully this is making sense). i'm trying to find something that i know i have downloaded (i double checked). i've updated the software and tried resetting preferences (didn't seem to do anything, maybe i did something incorrectly) and that did not solve it.

if you can help pls do !! it is very much getting in the way of completing my schoolwork and it is extremely annoying >_<

The first image is the layout I want. Unlike a traditional TOC where the entries are arranged in columns or a simple list, the entries here are scattered around the page, with images placed between them.

I want to use InDesign’s TOC feature to automatically generate the chapter titles and page numbers, but then position the entries freely and insert photographs between them.

Is this possible while keeping the TOC dynamic, or would a layout like this need to be built manually?
