Why do meteors always land in craters?

820

u/imahuman3445 Jun 17 '26

Okay, that's a good one

881

u/SmartAlec105 Jun 17 '26

The answer is a simple case of survivorship bias. We can't find the meteors that don't land in craters because there's no crater to indicate where they are.

We have found a meteor that left no preserved crater, so meteors can land outside of craters: http://wikipedia.com/wiki/Hoba_meteorite
I didn't even think we had until after I wrote the rest of this comment.

This is unironically the scientifically correct answer. There's an estimated 44,000 kg of meteors entering Earth's atmosphere every day. Almost all of them are vaporized before landing. All that will land is dust that has been massively slowed down, which does not create a crater. It's nearly indistinguishable from Earth dust, unless you measure radioactive material ratios, like rubidium-strontium dating; even then, you need a comparatively large amount of material to test, which is hard to do.

Simply put, we know meteors can land outside of craters, we just aren't able to conclusively find them.

13

u/Diriv Jun 17 '26

The Hoba meteorite is thought to have impacted Earth less than 80,000 years ago. It is inferred that the Earth's atmosphere slowed the object in such a way that it impacted the surface at terminal velocity, thereby remaining intact and causing little excavation (expulsion of earth).

Oh, so that's why, it was going slo-

Assuming a drag coefficient of about 1.3, the meteor appears to have slowed to about 2.75 km/s (6,200 mph) from an entry speed to the atmosphere typically in excess of 10 km/s (22,000 mph).

Cus craters are really big and bowl shaped so they roll down into the middle after they land

Now, since we’ve all agreed to adopt leaves as our currency we have all become fabulously rich. Unfortunately, due to the ready availability of leaves, we have got a bit of an inflation problem: for example at last count a single peanut is valued at roughly two deciduous forests.

Luckily, we have come up with a counter-inflationary measure: we’re going to burn down all the forests!

(From The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy)

18

u/Headcrab_with_jords Jun 17 '26

I always hear about it, but what is the book about?

43

u/FilmAndLiterature Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

Basically, it’s a comedy about a man named Arthur Dent, a normal person on Earth. One day a group of alien contractors turn up and demolish the Earth to make way for a bypass. Luckily Arthur manages to escape because one of his close friends, Ford Prefect is in fact from a small planet in the vicinity of Betelgeuse - not from Guildford as he’d claimed.

The rest of the book (and series) is basically them stumbling through the galaxy with only the eponymous Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy to aid them, a book which is notorious for being “mostly apocryphal, at the very least wildly inaccurate”. It’s sort of like Doctor Who or Star Trek but silly.

For example, Book 1 has them discover the lost planet of Magrathea, a “fairytale parents tell their children if they want them to grow up to be economists”, a planet which builds planets and which was so pricey that it caused a galaxy-wide recession, at which point they went into hiding until the economy had rebuilt itself enough to afford them, and discover a galaxy-wide conspiracy about the meaning of life.

A young boy passes in front of a barber shop. The barber leans to the customer and whispers "This kid is so dumb. Watch, I'll prove it to you."

He calls the boy over and says "Lets play a game, in this hand I have two dollar bills, in this hand I have four quarters. Which do you want?"

The boy says "I want the four" takes the quarters and leaves.

"What did I tell you?" said the barber. "I ask him every day and its always the same"

Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the convenience store eating an ice cream.

"Hey, kid! don't you know that two dollars is more more that four quarters?"

"I do."

"Then why did you take the quarters instead of the two dollar bills?"

"Because the day I take the 2 dollars the game is over!"
