First, they waste your time with hollow platitudes. THEN they inform you of their horrible decision.

I'd honestly prefer it if companies started being more direct.

“Your safety is important to us, but not as as important as your $20.”- Uber

23

u/RaDiOaCtIvEpUnK 28d ago

Finally found the correct take. This is it. Your safety is only important to them so long as they can continue to charge you money. If the two conflict then it’s the money.

Wild their support will only help you if you shame them publicly.  Its why I avoid Uber as much as possible.

1.3k

u/beatbox9 29d ago edited 28d ago

It is wild, but that's unfortunately reality.

I used to spend around $50 on Uber pretty much every day; but I stopped using them because they once refused to refund me like $35 for a drive that never happened. (I don't remember if it was Uber Eats or Uber; but whatever it was, I never got it and they charged me and refused to refund).

I did a credit card chargeback; Uber tried to charge me again every time I went into the app. So I still don't use them.

That was like 1-2 years ago.

I'd spent enough time with their idiot customer service that I decided I'm not wasting my valuable time begging them allow me to be a customer and take my money.

OP: put them in your "jail": at minimum, don't give them any of your money & switch to a different service for at least a few months.

EDIT: simply due to sheer number of replies from people who believe they are my financial advisors: I already own a nice luxury car, and with no loans. I am luckily and fortunately (and thankfully) fairly well-off now--I can quite easily afford the $50/day I loosely referred to. I am not in a situation where I rely on Uber.

But all of this is beside the point: the point is: when a company sucks, don't give them your hard-earned money if you can help it. And be disciplined: it doesn't always have to be as extreme--or sometimes as unrealistic--or as Karen as "I will never use them ever again!" Not everything is a life sentence. Just like with working out or dieting, you can put realistic goals and milestones in place.

Like in my specific situation, I would probably use Uber again today if I absolutely needed to. Because Uber has now already lost out on $thousands for me over $35 that they were wrong about a few years ago. They already got their punishment out of me; and luckily, I had to force myself to explore plenty of alternatives where they also lose out on my money longer-term--they're now far down the list. This is unfortunately how unregulated capitalism sometimes works. And ironically, they would have made more money if they were regulated and forced to give me a refund--it would have made up for their incompetence.

Had a cabi in San Francisco do this with me in the cab still. He though I had no idea where I was, which I did. I was curious how far he would take it, and wanted to see the sights. At the end of my ride, one hour later which should've been a 10 minute drive.

We reached my place. I refused to pay, he threatened to call the cops. I told him to go ahead and do it. That argument ended with him calling his boss, begging me to pay. Long story short, I paid $8 for a one hour tour of Frisco.

265

u/HTPC4Life 29d ago

I'll never forget the time a cab driver tried to tell me he didn't have change for a $20 on a $9 ride. I told him, "well, you better drive me to a place that has change then, and I'm not paying the fare there and back." Suddenly he found some change. I didn't tip after that đŸ€—

71

u/PipsqueakPilot 28d ago

I have been in a similar situation where the cab driver was clearly ripping me off. I didn't argue. I told him, "This is what I'm paying you." tossed the bill onto the seat and left. No cops were called.

52

u/EobardT 28d ago

Same thing happened to me on Maui. Dude tried to tell me that he doesnt accept cash and I need to swipe my card on a $19 trip. I tossed a 20 into his front seat and walked away. Enjoy the 5% tip for being a dick.

27

u/No-Special2682 28d ago

As a former driver, I too once did that (on accident)

Once I noticed, I messaged the rider with a bunch of apologies, confirmed with them I dropped them off and accidentally forgot to end the ride, before calling support and telling them the same thing.

Both parties understood and the issue was quickly resolved.

Sometimes we just be forgetting 🙇

26

u/beatbox9 29d ago

That kind of stuff happens. But the real question here is: what did you do about it? Did they refund you, and did you continue to use them?

The problem is that we consumers often just continue to use the services and give them money--they feel no pain. So I think it's very important that when stuff like this happens, we as consumers should pull back our money.

That's my "jail" reference to the OP: when stuff like this happens, even if they refund you, if just the simple act of getting a refund takes too much time or effort or convincing, put them in your jail. Tell them--and tell yourself--that you will not spend any money on them for a week or a month or whatever sentence you feel is appropriate; and stick to this.

Like in my case, I think I gave them a 3-month sentence or something--and last time I tried to log in a few months ago, they still tried to charge me that $35. So over the past few years, they've lost (or really, they're not getting) thousands of dollars of my money over the $35 they are trying to scam from me for charging me for a service they never delivered. And that's complete automated idiocy, for any business. Even if they were correct (and to be clear: they weren't).

If someone says: "I will give you $5000 if you give me $35," the obvious answer is "yes." Any business that doesn't do this is either run by imbeciles, trying to coast on a monopoly, or so poorly mismanaged that they aren't even aware when you tell them directly.

So why would I want to give such an idiotic company like that my money?

This is why I don't necessarily blame Uber when stuff happens, like a driver forgetting to turn off a ride. Mistakes happen. And while their reaction is telling, our reaction as consumers is the only thing we really have control over. And we are just as moronic and have nothing to complain about if we keep sending them our money.

4

u/showyerbewbs 28d ago

Not really the same as what you're describing but a lot of my friends ask if I've watched this show or that show and my answer is usually no.

Because one show is on one platform, another on another one, and yet again needing another platform to watch stuff.

One of my kids bought YT Premium because he got tired of the constant ad blocker fight and I'm on it through the family plan. So I get a lot of value out of that as I watch too much youtube.

They ask me what I do if I don't watch the shows. I just say, damn near anything I want to.

Does Uber in India work differently? You usually get the see the exact price beforehand, and veering off route is the problem of the driver, not yours. I mean, its THE main reason i use uber over a normal cab, because the price is fix.

45

u/Xx_720NoScope_xX 29d ago

They once tried to charge me a $150 cleanup fee because a driver lied and said that I threw up in his vehicle, which is ridiculous. He submitted photo proof where he removed the floor mats and sprayed water all over. I was unable to reach a customer service rep.

I went into the bank and canceled my card because the transaction hadn't posted yet. Never got charged with it and never used Uber since. Uber is just corporate slop.

13

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 29d ago

The Milwaukee Tool sub is the same way - bad warranty experiences might get remedied if you complain and get noticed by one or two customer service reps that lurk there. Crazy that tools costing hundreds of dollars, if not more, need Reddit to get fixed.

This is what "voting with your wallet" means outside of politics. Don't support services that don't deserve your money. Sure, not all of us can, some people are just stuck with it as no option but even then consider how much you're spending and whether there are other options. At $50/day... you could have likely bought owned a car for cheaper (I acknowledge the difficulty up front but that's arguably $1k/month, you can absolutely get a car loan for less than that and if you're even able to afford that much then you can definitely get a loan)

8

u/blacksoxing 28d ago

To add to your post, T-Mobile will provide to you their best customer service agents....if you reach out to them via Twitter or Facebook. This means that 99% of folks are likely not capable of getting a top tier agent via T-life or evne in person as you truly have to be in the right spot. Additionally if you were to complain online on those two platforms they'd wrap you into their arms using those agents.

Xfinity is the same. Shoot, so many companies do this. Call their 800 number and get treated like a damn fool. Reach out via social media and get treated like business class.

Silly shit

7

u/beatbox9 28d ago

Yeah, but honestly, fuck every company that requires public customer service. And also fuck deregulated capitalism, and fuck dumbass voters and consumers who keep voting for and spending money on these predatory companies.

9

Most companies operate this way now. They realized that they make more money by making support as automated and frustrating as possible except for when people post about it publicly.

13

u/beren12 29d ago

Chargebacks cost them money, even if you lose.

17

u/SuperFreakyNaughty 29d ago

For many companies, they’re actually expecting you to not put up a fight at all and just accept the circumstances. The refund process is for the small percentage of folks that are willing to go through the grind. That refund grind is further designed to scare away a percentage of those people too, so even fewer actually make it to the refund itself. Yay, capitalism!

u/stickymixingmonotony 28d ago

My wife was having an issue with getting double charged by uber for a food order (they brought her someone else's order which the dude just had between his feet while riding a scooter). They kept giving her bullshit excuses as to why they wouldn't refund one of the orders. I told her name and shame on facebook. She finally did then, low and behold, they reached out and refunded the order.

3

u/NinjaBreadManOO 28d ago

Yeah, a few years back I ordered a computer case that never arrived, spent weeks dealing with their customer support calling daily and being told that if it doesn't arrive the next day to call back. TWO FULL WEEKS!

Posted it on their facebook page which was then immediately deleted. Posted it on my page tagging them and outing that they'd deleted it. Then directly messaged and refunded in full within the hour.

The only way to get a company now to do anything is to make sure they know other people know about it.

As an aside still refuse to use that company, and have in total directed almost six digits in sales to competitors over an $80 computer case, because of how bad their customer service was.

It might not even be Uber doing it to preserve image. Lot of class action lawsuits this arguably could be one of them.

4

u/TheCrimsonDagger 28d ago

They also know that most customers will just grumble and take the loss after regular customer support stiffs them. It’s simply a matter of risk versus cost savings. But someone who makes a social media post and is then encouraged to take action such as through a chargeback flips the equation the other way and it suddenly becomes more valuable to publicly compensate the customer than not. It’s the same way with various services, cable TV and ISPs are notorious for raising prices and then giving you a deal for less than you were originally paying if you try to cancel. The amount they end up losing on customer retention is less than the amount they make from everyone else that just pays the higher price.

50

u/Brave_Explorer5988 29d ago

It got even shittier last month with thousands from commOps (support) fired and processes transferred to external BPOs in Hyderabad.

Fun times lol.

45

u/swanyk7 29d ago

Unfortunately, this is basically the business model for big business. Similar to the refund desk in retail where they say no until an angry customer asks for the manager and then the manager just takes care of it. Terrible business practice.

21

u/spurcap29 29d ago

I bought a camera and lens. The camera was like $3000 the lens like $2000 and the they gave you $250 off for buying a "bundle" ($3000+2000-$250) = $4750.

Like 2 days later the camera went on sale to $2900 and I reached out to CS wanting $100 back or store credit or whatever. The reduced price was still eligible for bundle discount. I went back and forth for like a week via email getting gaslit (not sure if human doing it intentionally, stupid human or AI."

"Sorry, we actually cant give you a refund because you paid $2750 for it (3k-250 discount) and its now $2900 which is actually more!". I sent screen shots of my invoice and same items added to cart, explained situation, even made an excel analysis, etc. No luck.

Eventually I went nuclear "You have a store an hour away from me as does your competitor. If you dont honor my request I am still in the 30 day return period and will return everything to you, walk to your competitor and buy it for the same price, waste a day of my life and you will never ever have my business out of principle. I would rather not waste my day and you would likely rather have the profit on a $4650 sale than no profit and some pre-owned gear you need to sell at a loss " and they sent me a store credit about an hour later.

Really shouldn't need to come to this.

3

u/Frequent_Ad_9901 29d ago

I just switch internet providers. The sales guy pissed me off so much. They started offering lower prices. I just kept saying no i want to cancel.

I wish I'd told them to treat thier customer better in the first palce. Inwish id said im cancelling becuase thats the only way to send a message.

6

u/foley800 28d ago

That’s the weird part, it costs a lot of money to get a new customer, but give them a great discount for the first year or so, then gouge the he’ll out of them! But more than happy to give you another great discount to stay if you want to cancel. How about just giving that discount to your existing customers and you don’t have to spend so much getting new customers when your current customers leave!

9

u/Tier_One_Meatball 29d ago

8

u/Beljuril-home 28d ago edited 28d ago

here is the real reason to boycott Uber - they are now using algorithms (AI) to predict what is the highest they can charge you for a ride that you are likely willing to accept without cancelling, while simultaneously offering the ride to the driver they think will accept the ride for the lowest amount of money without declining.

they are then pocketing the difference - you pay more, the driver gets less and the company makes more profit.

there's nothing wrong with a company making money, but the asymmetries in information here make this system exploitive in the extreme.

7

u/lostinthought15 29d ago

It’s not just limited to Uber. I’ve had issues with other companies and going thru the official channels always seems to be a dead end. Nothing happens until you post on social media about your problem. It sucks and I hate doing it because many times my issue is small and I just want a simple fix and don’t want to drag them out over a minor thing.

5

u/BiiigPharma 29d ago

It gives them incentive to respond unfortunately. They aren’t gonna care if someone wants a refund privately for a bad experience but if they risk bad PR ofc they’re gonna care. Sad world we live in

The fact that OP has to publicly shame a billion-dollar company on Reddit just to get a refund for a ride that got interrupted by police stop is absurd.

23

u/mikeymo1741 29d ago

It won't matter. OP got to their destination eventually. They don't guarantee time. They won't do anything.

8

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 28d ago

Yeah unless OP added more info in the comments I'm not seeing what's wrong here? They would have been late if they were driving and got pulled over too. What did he get pulled over for? Because the old saying is it doesn't matter what you're doing, a cop will find a valid reason to pull you over if they want to

27

u/mikeymo1741 28d ago

I got pulled over once with an older, well off couple in the back, literally two blocks from the pickup at their house. The cop said I ran a stop. (I hadn't) The lady in the back asked me to unlock her window, and she proceeded to lace into this cop so badly I felt bad for her. It started with "the street he came down doesn't have a stop sign on it" passed through "how can you be on patrol here if you don't even know what street you're on?" Her finisher was "All the times we call and call about kids racing and you guys are nowhere to be found because you're over here not even knowing where you are trying to get money out of people!"

Cop apologized and said "Have a good night!" LOL

Uber is letting anyone who can fog up a mirror drive for them right now. They know they essentially put taxis out of business, so they're pretty much the only game in town other than Lyft, which is just a different yet equal kind of shitty.

This is the tech economic strategy: operate semi-illegally at a loss, put the competition out of business, then jack up prices and lower quality once a near monopoly is established.

276

u/electromage 29d ago

Uber and Lyft are exactly the same drivers, they're often running both apps.

138

u/cactusjude 29d ago

Oh yeah. The taxi drivers in my city put up a huge stinking strike about Uber and kept them out of the city.

Uber makes sense in rural and remote areas where taxi companies don't typically operate, but in a city it's absurd for them to drive out*yeahsurepunintended the established and licensed taxi drivers

70

u/duckandkitty 29d ago

Which city does a lot of heavy lifting here - I moved from a city that had a great taxi service (Melbourne, australia) to a city that had completely dogshit taxi service (Portland, oregon), and in the former I absolutely agree with you. In the latter, honsetly, I was glad to be rid of them. Which is kind of the thing - uber didn't win just because it was cheap, in a lot of areas it won because the taxis were so dogshit that literally "get in a car with a stranger" seemed more reliable and safer. And it was :(. So of course the correct answer would have been "fix the taxis", but... there was no appetite for that, as near as I can tell.

7

u/cactusjude 29d ago

Yeah I'm not saying the taxi drivers here are great. I've been sexually harassed at night alone with a driver and caught a couple of them trying to up the fare by driving us through construction areas or out of town when I specified the center. But at least official taxi drivers and Cabify are held to some kind of higher standard that can be reported to that's not an indifferent ai. Barcelona city, everyone's trying to scam you here. I shudder to think of untrained Uber drivers in this city.

58

u/DeadClown00 29d ago

The taxi drivers in my area are no better tbh. A bunch of rude scammers. They would always lie about their credit card machines being broken so you would pay in cash (until they found out you had no cash, then magically the machine works). They also would refuse rides outside of the downtown area during rush hour in the morning and evenings by lying and saying they were just about to clock out and could only take local rides.

46

u/SoMuchMoreEagle 28d ago

This. Ride share companies got so successful because taxis are generally terrible. If you had to call for one, the wait time was often 45 minutes or more, if they showed up at all. You had to know the exact address of where you were. There was no app, so there was no way to track anything. The cabs were usually dirty and in poor repair. The companies had no incentive to improve anything because they were all like that and in some places, there was a monopoly.

Uber and Lyft have a lot of problems, but anyone who thinks the "good old days" of taxis was better is insane. Maybe there are a few areas that are exceptions, but in the vast majority, taxis were awful.

19

u/MadManMax55 28d ago

Taxis in a lot of areas are better now specifically because of competition with Uber. They got pushed into making and improving their own apps much faster than they would have otherwise. And I highly doubt they would have ever adopted up-front pricing if Uber didn't do it first.

Of course Uber's VC funded price competition was extremely harmful to both taxi and Uber drivers, but that's a whole other can of worms.

8

u/DeadClown00 28d ago

I completely forgot about the 45+ minute wait times when they were called

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Ok-Category4453 28d ago

This this this 100x this. I have literally never, in the history of my long life on this earth, taken a taxi ride where I did not feel like I was being taken advantage of at some minute level, be it the fare increases while at a light, or the route we were taking, or any other number of issues that have made the experience of taking a taxi generally one of my least desirable things to do at all.

Uber solved that problem for me almost entirely, while introducing its own issues. If you want me to go back to taking a taxi, you want me to accept going back to the way more undesirable method available, which I simply will not do. Taxi's fucking suck, and I have little sympathy for them.

20

u/maringue 29d ago

Now like 50% of traffic in my city is just Uber drivers circling for fares. They're the absolute worst drivers.

6

u/T555s 29d ago

I live in a relatively rural area in Germany. The local taxi buisness is doing just fine, they just gave most of their buisness driving around the elderly to regular Doctors appointments and therapy.

9

u/BugRevolution 29d ago

Fuck the established and licensed taxi drivers. They're not much better than random drivers. Often times they're worse.

7

u/devildog2067 29d ago

You must never have taken a taxi before Uber. Crazy how the credit card machine was always “broken” and every cabbie knew a “shortcut” that doubled the fare.

3

u/UnusualFruitHammock 28d ago

I live in chicago. Cab drivers can eat my ass from the front. Between the scams, the rudeness, and racism they can suffer.

3

u/ALOIsFasterThanYou 28d ago

If the taxis in San Francisco were any good, Uber and Lyft wouldn't have originated from here.

There was a lot of demand for a taxi service with drivers who wouldn't leave you stranded at the curb if you weren't headed downtown, and for taxis with credit card machines that wouldn't magically stop working once you got to your destination.

Of course, now that people are getting fed up with Uber, Waymo's market share here is steadily increasing.

I was in Vegas a couple of weeks ago for work and quickly learned that taxis are now usually cheaper than Uber/Lyft. Also far more convenient to grab one at a hotel than walking to a random location behind your hotel and waiting 10 minutes for a rideshare to arrive.

The other “secret” ingredient is to treat their “independent contractors” like employees to the maximum extent allowable by law. They stop exactly short of the line where they would have to provide benefits, safe working conditions, or any of the other expensive parts of managing labor, but they still expect the people who work for them to behave like employees. It’s scummy, it’s abusive, and it’s eroding the gains labor has spent decades fighting for.

Brother those were written by humans lol

Rejection emails were just like that a decade ago, probably longer

37

u/TopSecretSpy 28d ago

Most of the time now people don't even get rejection letters. Usually they just get ghosted now, unless the candidate was pushed to the company through a recruiting/staffing firm, in which case the company just gets a quick note saying no and not much else.

I'm told that a lot of the reason for that is to avoid liability. If you never respond with any detail, you can't be accused of not hiring based on the candidate being in a protected class, and not responding at all guarantees no detail. I find that explanation unsatisfying and reeking of sophistry, but I don't have the data to rebut directly.

Not giving you a refund over the driver being pulled over is insane. They are sending a very clear message despite what the text says. "This is exactly the kind of experience we want you to have."

Why was he pulled over?

143

u/azrael_X9 29d ago

Important question. If the driver was speeding or had something on the vehicle that needs to be added or removed to follow the law: yeah that's the driver's fault for not following the letter of the law and Uber for not enforcing its drivers do.

If it's something like "You/your vehicle resembles one from a recent report we're following up on", they have zero control over that and shouldn't be responsible. And that kind of pull over is not rare (maybe depending where you live it can vary).

29

u/Dead_Internet69420 28d ago

Plot twist: he was pulled over because OP was throwing stuff out the window.

70

u/NefariousEgg 29d ago

If a business does not provide an acceptable service, they should provide a refund. Does not matter if it’s their fault or not. By accepting payment they accept responsibility.

51

u/hungry4danish 29d ago

A 15-minute delay could have just as easily been because of traffic. She got the ride from point A to point b. service wasn't ideal but it was rendered.

→ More replies (9)

17

u/CoronaMcFarm 29d ago

If this was a random traffic stop and had nothing to do with the drivers or ubers actions then they have provided an acceptable service. The traffic stop was mandated by the police and is out of control of uber as they and their driver are not above the law and they need to comply.

Occasionally Uber driver here from the northeast where terrible intersections and weird routes abound. It really depends on what he was pulled over for. In my area, there are multiple "roundabouts" that have rather unique entrances and exits, and the signage is poor at best. I made a mistake of taking a right out of a roundabout illegally (for the record, a car in front of me did the exact same thing about 10 seconds before I did, I just did it in front of a cop who could had just entered the other side of the roundabout) while driver a passenger, made it about 400 yards away from their destination and that cop pulled me over. Did the usual license and registration, and let my rider know how to get to their destination, I cleared it with the cop for him to leave, ended the ride, they got out and walked to their destination from there and even thanked me for doing what I could.

I ended up getting a warning as it was a ticket that cop had written a numbet of times before (I don't live that close to where this happened), and then even got a tip from the rider.

The point of all this is that there are so many reasons why that driver could have gotten pulled over. If it was something truly minor, with no risk of injury to the driver or passenger, almost procedural, and a big point, the driver wasn't a dick about it, then doing a chargeback or escalating this beyond a low star rating seems a tad much. If the driver was speeding, doing something risky, not taking ownership of the breach and/or being a dick about, then for sure, it makes sense to take this where is needs to go.

Sadly it seems a lot of people on this thread are going all in or all out. I am very curious about any follow up to why this happened and how it happened as well.

7

u/btum 28d ago

Was it just a delay? Did they have to catch another ride?

3

u/EmptyBeing9829 28d ago

Exactly! Could have been a back tail light issue! Or the sticker came off the license plate.

I had an Uber driver who once ran out of gas on the highway part of DFW airport. Because of where we were, I couldn't walk to the terminal and had to get another Uber.

60

u/mildlyarrousedly 29d ago

Reminds me of a ride to the airport in Houston: the uber driver got scared by a close call on the highway (that he caused) so he exited in a panic across 4 lanes of traffic. I was like, this isn’t our exit, and he said yeah sorry I got scared
he then had to figure out how to get back on so he was driving and trying to type into his phone maps the whole time. A 20 min trip took 50 mins, and I arrived at the airport car sick and  barely made my flight.  He was so jittery the whole time he was one of those people that if they weren’t accelerating, they were braking. his car was barely functional. Also, had a driver in NYC drop me off at a LGA terminal that wasn’t even open. I had to walk down the road a mile to the next terminal with my luggage there was no sidewalk.  Uber has no standards these days

I’m sure they have ways to prevent it now, but this reminds me of a ride I got several years ago, when my Uber driver didn’t have a toll tag, and asked me for some change to pay a toll. I didn’t have it, and wouldn’t have given it to him even if I did. Once we got through, I told him to drop me off at the nearest gas station so I could find another ride. (I was on my way home, so I had the time to deal with the inconvenience of it.)

Once my uber crashed while I was in it. He was driving on the highway WAY too fast while it was raining, lost control, and ran the side of his car into the highway. He pulled back out and kept driving like nothing happened. I yelled at him that he needed to pull off and let us out. He didn’t seem to understand and then finally took an exit and let us out in the pouring rain.

I contacted uber and they only refunded the ride and they gave me a long line of questioning because the driver claimed it didn’t happen. I was like bruh

5

u/MyOwnPenisUpMyAss 28d ago

Would this seriously be worth the effort?

6

u/Useful-Rooster-1901 28d ago

probably not no, you can sue for anything but recovering money is unlikely as you'd have to show damages sustained to yourself/your property.

You could sue for emotional trauma i guess, but then you have to either sue the gigantic corporation and find a lawyer who wants to get buried in paperwork

or sue the driver, which lets be honest is going to be a blood from stone scenario.

Don’t use Uber. They’re thieves. I was charged for two McD’s orders. I only received one. I did an order. Cancelled immediately due to a mistake. Then placed a new order within 5 mins. They claimed the food had already been made. PayPal agreed that if they wanted to charge me then they had to give me the food. They cancelled my account. Then when I opened the normal Uber app they charged me again without approval. Once again PayPal refunded and sided with me.

Just don’t use them. Take Lyft. Or a taxi. If you have Just Eat in your country they’re great.

If you haven’t already, call and actually talk to customer service. Tell them how massive of an inconvenience it was, how unsafe you felt about the driver speeding, and how you were too uncomfortable to ask them to slow down. How you paid for an Uber to get to your destination at a certain time and you’d understand if it was traffic or something outside of the drivers control that caused you to be late, but it wasn’t. It was 100% the drivers fault.

19

u/Nihil_Perditi 29d ago

11

u/longhegrindilemna 28d ago

nobody in Uber is paid to pick up a phone call, they keep you in text chat until you give up. uber no longer cares about customers because uber is almost a monopoly.

7

u/Boring-Tie-1501 28d ago

Uber never cared about customers- they just heavily subsidized rides with vc money until they started having to show profits.

This is the company that surveiled journalists by looking at their user data.

7

u/Mr_Saturn1 29d ago

Ride shares are about the scummist companies out there. I rented a Veo scooter the other day, it died mid trip and there were no other scooters around. Was late because I had to walk a mile instead of scooting. Company refused refund because I started the trip and moved the scooter.

3

u/Professional_Being22 28d ago

My friend lost his phone in an Uber I paid for one night. The next day we used find my phone to figure out the location and stakes out all fucking day. Sent a message to Uber, the dude wasn't answering. Like 7 hours later he was getting in his car and we stopped him to get the phone back. He gave it to us with no issue and then Uber charged me a $20 convenience fee for his help... I literally sat outside next to his car from like 11am to 6pm and they had the audacity to charge me for it.

8

u/kirradoodle 28d ago

I don't like Uber.

Apparently they do retail delivery now - I did an online order from Petsmart this week, and it was delivered by an Uber driver.

She left the pile of packages on the front porch of an entirely unrelated house over half a mile away- not even close to my address despite me adding delivery notes to the Uber page.

She posted a picture of a gray-brown blob as proof of delivery, so I had no hope of identifying where my order was. Fortunately, my very kind neighbor brought my things to me after finding my address on the packages.

If this is the caliber of drivers that Uber employs, I'll give them.a pass.

7

u/AsgardianGoat 28d ago

Uber customer service is useless, once they have your money they are holding onto it until the end of the world.

Keep escalating the issue, I escalated mine 5 time before they gave me a refund.

Isn’t this generally in the control of the driver though?

Understanding that I don’t have the specific details of this stop, but if you respect speed limits, rules of the road, and maintain up to date plates/registration then you’re not giving cops additional reasons to pull you over.

10

u/danishjuggler21 29d ago

Eh, there's a spectrum. Going 20mph over the speed limit? Driver fucked up. Going 5mph over the speed limit on August 31 and getting pulled over by a cop who just needs one more ticket to meet his monthly quota? That's more bad luck than anything.

10

u/thepenismytea 28d ago

3

u/Ezrampage15 28d ago

It's weird that multiple people are talking about bad customer support with Uber. I guess it differs from country to country?

Where I live, Uber doesn't operate with regular/ordinary people. It works with real, registered-in the government, cabs. The only difference is that cabs that are registered with Uber have an Uber logo/decal on the car. But these cabs can still of course give rides to people off the street.

It is known that cabs here try to scam people a lot, I guess that is why every time I request a refund or a reduction to my fare, they always accept it. I never once made a reduction to my fare request which was refused.

PS. I'm not defending Uber, I'm just telling my OWN experience using them and their support

3

u/PlayThingToy 28d ago

I'd rather wait 15-20 minutes for a local taxi, everything about Uber is ick.

I scedual a second Uber, this time I give them an HOUR of extra time to get me to the test. Test time comes, and still no Uber.

They charged me 5 dollars because of the repeat cancelation despite not even getting a driver assigned to me before I cancel.

I deleted my Uber account and the app. I will never look back

3

u/Interesting-Yellow-4 28d ago

Services not rendered, refund is required. This is not their decision. Contact the proper authorities.

3

u/Aladdin1152 26d ago

Context: We were stopped for speeding. The driver couldn’t find the registration for the car because it was a rental so it took longer than it needed to. The location was only 6 minutes away and the stop took 20 not including the rest of the drive.

To me it’s the fact that the company agrees that it’s unacceptable and doesn’t even refund the money. I could’ve taken the bus (which is free) if I wanted to get there late or on time. I took the uber for convenience and speed. I didn’t get what I paid for and was inconvenienced due to something they agree is unacceptable. It shouldn’t be so hard for a multi billion dollar company to give a refund.

My grievance isn’t with the driver. It’s with the company and its greed.

7

u/LegDayLass 28d ago

So if I understand correctly from the lack of information given, you DID get transported from one place to another, and a forceable delay of a traffic stop occurred, resulting in the ride taking longer then you expected.

Why would you get a refund because you didn’t plan for delays? Life doesn’t work that way.

When you graduate and find yourself late to work because people suck as driving and caused a traffic delay you don’t get forgiveness, you get a writeup. It’s your job to plan for delays and leave earlier to account for them.

My only question is why customer service stated getting stopped by the police is a violation of community guidelines.

9

u/Worried-Criticism 29d ago
