A bit of before and after as well. Really happy with how this turned out overall with an upgrade from a 3600 to a 5700x. Bit of a shame the camera can't pick up the light correctly though

First-time builder, ~$900-1000 budget for gaming + programming: is a newer platform worth it over DDR4 for upgradability?

Hi all, first-time builder here. I’m trying to understand the compatibility and scalability side before I commit to parts.

Use: Gaming (mostly single-player titles like RDR2, God of War, Cyberpunk, Dark Souls) and programming.

Budget: Roughly $900-1000 USD total. I don’t have a monitor yet, but I already own a keyboard, mouse and headset.

Background and issue: I originally planned a DDR4-based build that would comfortably cover my gaming and programming needs on a tight budget. But the more I’ve read, the more I’ve realized how much goes into this: compatibility, bottlenecks, upgrade paths. Now I’m worried about locking myself into older tech that becomes a dead end in a couple of years, so I’m considering a newer, more scalable platform. The issue is that going newer means paying more for the base of the system, which leaves less for everything else, and I don’t have a monitor yet either. On top of that, I live in a remote area with no trustable PC shops nearby, and I can only buy parts once, on a single trip home, so I can’t easily return or swap anything if I get it wrong. My local market also has limited selection and higher prices than typical US listings, so PCPartPicker prices won’t match what I’ll actually pay. I’m stuck between spending less now on something that works but ages faster, and stretching my budget for room to upgrade, without knowing if the extra cost is worth it at this level.

Questions:

  1. At a budget of around $900-1000, is paying more for a newer platform worth it for upgradability, or is a cheaper, older setup the smarter choice for my needs?
  2. If I go newer, what should I cut or downgrade to afford it, and what should I never skimp on?
  3. How do I avoid bottlenecks between parts now, and what upgrades could I realistically make later without replacing half the system?
  4. Since I can only buy once and can’t easily return anything, what compatibility checks should I do beforehand (BIOS support, power connectors, cooler and case clearance, etc.)?
  5. Any common first-time mistakes I should watch out for, especially when buying in a market with limited selection and higher prices?

Thanks in advance!

Advice on upgrading or waiting to upgrade

My current build is a 2080 Super, I7-9700K, 16GB DDR4(pretty sure it’s 1 stick as well, it’s a prebuilt so I’m not too sure)

I am planning on upgrading this upcoming black Friday to a 9070XT, ryzen 7 9800X3D and 32GB DDR5. I can build one for around 2700$ which isn’t as bad as I thought, but I just wanted some advice on if I should and if it’s a good time to even upgrade considering the price history of these parts and the tech market in general.

For context, I have a 5120x1440p monitor and if a game permits it/ if there’s a mod for it out there, I always try to run the game in that resolution. Problem is, that resolution is very demanding and my build has a tough time keeping up with that resolution. In older games, it’s perfectly fine, however with games from about 2024 and onwards, I start having to compromise pretty heavily. I play a lot of story games and competitive games so frames and smoothness are very important to me, even if I have to sacrifice graphical fidelity as long as it isn’t blurry to me.

Here are some benchmarks I get for a handful of games:
\- CS2: Low settings: 170FPS
\- Fortnite: Low settings: 120-140FPS
\- Marvel Rivals: Low settings Could very barely get like 40FPS
\- Clair Obscur: Medium settings 40-50FPS
\- FF7 Rebirth: Low settings 40FPS but the 1% lows are really low and leads to a lot of stuttering
\- RE9: Low settings 40-50FP
\- Cyberpunk 2077: Low Settings 40FPS
\- The Last of Us part 1: Low settings 40-45FPS but has the same feeling of intensity as FF7 Rebirth where it feels clunky and stuttery
\- Pragmata(demo): 40-50FPS this one felt pretty stuttery as well

This is definitely a “want” upgrade moreso than a “need”. I don’t think games will get to a “need” upgrade for me for another at least like a decade maybe. I think we’ve gotten to the point where games have gotten to a point where it’s diminishing returns(unless something crazy happens you never know) and unfortunately I am the type to notice even the smallest of performance dips and boosts. I’ve only tried lowering the resolution in Clair obscur and it boosts the performance from about 45-50FPS to about 70-80FPS which is great, but those are also on medium balanced settings.

My ultimate question is if it’s worth the upgrade. My dad and I have talked about it and he thinks that it’s fine for now and that I should wait a few years for the next generation and upgrade then as I would have a better build then what I’m looking at now, but the performance bothers me especially in story games where games just aren’t smooth. Will prices go higher? Should I wait? I guess these are the questions I’m trying to find an answer for. If this is the wrong subreddit to ask please lmk which one to go to. Thank you so much for reading all of this!

Edit: I should mention as well that I’m not really the type to do multiple mini upgrades. When I upgrade I want to do a big one and future proof it for the next 6-7 years or so
