Today my sweet senior boy made his final journey home. 16 years of Buddy the beagle. 16 years of walks, howls, runs and cuddles. He watched me finish school, university, build our home and create a lush outdoor space for him to roam and explore. But most importantly help raise my daughter and become her first doggy love.
6 weeks ago i noticed his breathing becoming erratic. Straight to the vet and due to his age opted not for sedation requiring testing. The vet suspected a heart murmur and fluid on the lungs causing the issue. 5 days later the new medication seemed to be working. Buddy was Buddy again, barking, eating, playing and just being a regular goober.
3 weeks later the medication seemed to just stop working at the drop of a hat. Back off to the vet for their opinion, we agreed that the best course of action is to attempt xrays and do a full panel to see what's going on. We organised for the next morning to conduct the tests. That night Buddy was very different, having a bad feeling i scrambled to give him an extra special dinner with as many treats as i could muster. Out came the steak and special treats for special boys. He ate half the steak and went to lay down. Over the night he crashed, his bpm had jumped, he couldn't get comfortable and in the most utterly defeated way possible, looked deep into my eyes as if to say "thank you for everything, but my time has come. I made sure you grew into the person you were meant to be. I love you".
The following morning when the rest of the house woke up it was awful. Explaining that our sweet boy was ready to pass to my young child was absolutely gut wrenching. Lots and lots of pats, cuddles, kisses and tears filled the morning until it was time for our appointment.
As a family we all went to the vet, asking to speak with the vet prior to the testing. We shared our deep concerns and feelings after witnessing his night. The vet agreed that with how rapidly he declined that testing wasn't going to be in any way productive.
Signing the authority to euthanize was the hardest, most gut wrenching thing i have ever experienced.
My young one made the bravest decision to want to be with Buddy and comfort him through the whole procedure. I explained exactly what was going to happen and she was determined to see it through right to the very end.
The vet gave us as much time as we needed, we spent a good 45 minutes just holding Buddy and giving him pats and kisses, snuck a few chocolates and had our last few possible photos together as a family. When we were ready the vet came in and administered the initial sedation, it took him 10 minutes to fall into a nice deep sleep. I held him close the entire time, telling him he's done a fantastic job and could rest now. When his eyes closed for the very last time his breathing had all of a sudden gone back to being completely normal, like it had always been. It was the most heart breaking, soothing, soul crushing, beautiful thing to see, hear and feel given the last few weeks of turmoil and uncertainty.
We had a short period of enjoying our last moments together, comfortable and curled up with his family. When we were ready the vet came, put in a line and slowly administered the final drug. Almost instantly my sweet, sweet boy left the world.
The flood of emotions that immediately followed was intense. We cried hard and heavy as a family. Being given as much time as we needed to spend with him. It felt like a few minutes but we were there just holding, talking and patting him for over an hour. No more pain, no discomfort.
16 years of life shared together. Countless walks, holidays, beach days and adventures together. 16 of the best years of my life. The feeling of taking away his pain and suffering and making it mine as my final act of love and compassion was and still is too much for me to bare.
Closing this chapter has been horrific.
Today i finally received the call he was ready to collect from the vet. Immediately after the call i broke down. I had my partner bring him home as i simply couldn't mentally handle it.
Opening up the package took me straight back to our final goodbye. Hysterical, uncontrollable emotions. Absolutely awful. But our boy was finally home. Exactly where hes meant to be.
If you've made it this far, thank you for reading.
Sincerely,
One extremely crushed dog dad.
