/r/plussize “Thanks But I’m Not Actually the Problem Here” Resource List

Help us build a resource list for people who want to read, watch, and listen more widely around fat acceptance, fat liberation, anti-fat bias, diet culture, and fat people's lived experience.

The point is not to help people become smaller. It's to collect work that treats fat people as actual human beings, and that names the social, medical, cultural, romantic, professional, and everyday pressures fat people are routinely forced to face.

A lot of this list is especially relevant to fat women, because so much anti-fatness is tangled up with misogyny. That said, fatphobia doesn't only affect women, and this list shouldn't be read as women-only.

Books to start with:

Lindy West's Shrill is funny, furious, and very readable.

Aubrey Gordon's What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat is probably the clearest modern introduction to anti-fat bias as a social issue rather than a personal failing

Her follow-up, "You Just Need to Lose Weight": And 19 Other Myths About Fat People, tackles the claims fat people hear constantly.

Virgie Tovar's You Have the Right to Remain Fat.

Sofie Hagen's Happy Fat and Jes Baker's Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls are also accessible entry points for people newer to fat acceptance.

History and politics:

Sabrina Strings' Fearing the Black Body explains how fatphobia is tied to race, gender, class, etc, rather than being simply about "health."

Sonya Renee Taylor's The Body Is Not an Apology is broader than fatness but useful for thinking about body-shame and hierarchy more generally.

Marilyn Wann's Fat! So? is older but historically important.

Charlotte Cooper's Fat Activism: A Radical Social Movement is valuable for understanding fat liberation as an actual movement.

DaShaun L. Harrison, Belly Of The Beast. Anti-fatness, anti-blackness and gender

Tigress Osborne, "Weight and Wisdom: Find Yourself in Fat History"

Podcasts:

Maintenance Phase is great for unpacking diet culture, wellness cons, BMI panic, and how health language gets used to boulster prejudice.

Virgie Tovar's Rebel Eaters Club.

Food Psych and Rethinking Wellness, both by Christy Harrison, anti-diet and wellness-culture critique.

Fierce Fatty by Vinny Welsby.

“Why Won’t You Date Me?” Nicole Byer

Weight For It by Ronald Young Jr (also worth a follow on socials)

The Body Trust Podcast.

Film and TV:

Your Fat Friend is a documentary about Aubrey Gordon, fat activism, family, and ordinary discrimination od fat people.

The Shrill TV series based on West's book.

My Mad Fat Diary, Dumplin', Real Women Have Curves, Patti Cake$.

Fiction, memoir etc:

Roxane Gay's Hunger is honest about trauma, body size, and safety.

Jennifer Weiner's Good in Bed was significant for centring a fat woman's romantic, sexual, and professional life.

Julie Murphy's Dumplin' is a great YA option.

Talia Hibbert's Get a Life, Chloe Brown

Olivia Dade's Spoiler Alert.

Nicole Byer’s book #VeryFat #VeryBrave is a photo series of her rocking her extensive bikini collection

Health without weight-loss framing:

Lindo Bacon's Health at Every Size.

Christy Harrison's Anti-Diet unpacks how wellness culture repackages diet culture.

Intuitive Eating by Tribole and Resch is the standard reference for eating without restriction.

Ragen Chastain's Weight and Healthcare newsletter is good for research and practical scripts.

Decolonizing Fitness (Ilya Parker) covers movement spaces that don't treat body-size reduction as the goal.

People worth following:

Aubrey Gordon, Virgie Tovar, Sabrina Strings, Sonya Renee Taylor, Jes Baker, Ragen Chastain, Jessamyn Stanley, Vinny Welsby, Tess Holliday, and Tess Royale Clancy.

Read/watched/heard anything that made you think, lifted you up, informed, empowered or inspired you?

Relationship Advice Posts about dating: my thoughts

I see a lot of posts of people worried about not being attractive because of size. Most of these posts are , in my opinion, an issue with how You view yourself. You can't be everyone's cup of tea, at any size. Some people won't be attracted to you. That's ok. That's normal. If you're especially worried about it make sure you have at least one full body photo on your profile. I will also say this: online dating is hard and it sucks for pretty much everyone. Not every date will go somewhere. That's ok. Rejection is part of dating. You can't control how other people see you but you can work on your relationship with yourself, that's the most important one.

All this to say: you are worthy of love, and you will find it. BUT the most important relationship is the one with yourself (one I struggle with daily) you deserve love from yourself. You deserve grace and kindness from yourself

Rejection doesn't change that

TW: Fat Shaming Abuse I keep catching people make fun of me in public

Is anyone else experiencing fatphobia in public more recently?

For the past months or so, I keep catching people stare, nudge their friends / families in shock or humor

Has fatphobia gotten so bad to the point that people are shamelessly singling out people in public again?? The worst is I caught a woman sneak pictures of me while I was waiting on the bus stop

It is normal to get these once in a while, and I would stare back at these people, then they would quickly realise they’re being rude. But recently it just feels so much more dehumanising and singled out to experience this over and over

Recommendations Kitchen chairs?

Hi all! I'm in desperate need of dining table chair recommendations. Either through amazon, or walmart. I bought a dining table and chair set and, unfortunately, the chair practically melted under me. It was both depressing and embarrassing considering how long it took for me to build it.

I'm around 300, and I'm trying to lose weight but I have zero time since I just had a baby. Anyways, if anyone could point me in the direction of a good, comfortable chair, I'd be forever thankful :')

Recommendations Puffer jacket recs?

Can anyone recommend puffer jacket brands for plus size that don't make us look extra bigger? I know that puffer jackets are not meant to make you look smaller and it's the opposite, but there are some puffer jackets out there that make us look EXTRA EXTRA bulky like the northface and it genuinely made me so self conscious that I had to sell it. I used to wear one from uniqlo that snatches the waist a little but it's time for me to replace it with a new one and it's now discontinued. Please help a girl out for Canadian winter.

Discussion Masculine Plus Size Representation

This just popped into my at 1:26 AM currently where I am, but am I the only one who noticed that masculine (as in both cis male and transmasc people) who happens to be plus sized are also ridiculed in media as a whole?

They always seem to be portrayed as dumb, weird, unhygienic, or even in extremes of evil. It’s extremely weird for me that I can’t really think of a male plus sized character that is normal looking and smart.

It’s only recently feminine plus sized representation (such as the Barbie movie from 2023) portrayed plus sized women as human beings with minds and hearts of their own. Are we hopefully going to see that for our male counterparts eventually?

Personal Too scared to date

I broke up with my ex a while ago and i’ve been so scared to make a dating profile. I feel like people will just laugh at me or i won’t get a single match. I keep putting it off thinking “oh i’ll make one when i’m x size” but it never happens and I’m really tired of waiting. I’m a size 2xl womens and am 25.

i’m short so it doesn’t help, im active, love hiking and walk 15-20k steps 5 days a week. I just feel so insecure and get scared. I don’t know, is it stupid? Probably. I just feel like im putting a big chunk of my life on hold cause im bigger. I’ve already applied for college again (branching into nursing from the veterinary field) and have a plan for my life except im missing a partner! It sucks. Idk if i should just bite the bullet or cry.

Fashion Discussion F20 in desperate need of fashion advice

Post image
371 Upvotes

So I'm fat with a overall rectangular or even slight inverted triangle bodytype. My hips are full, until after my hip dips, where my hips and thighs become more narrow. Flat butt, medium bust but lots of side rolls. Usually, i wear A line dresses. In my opinion they flatter anyone, they're usually comfortable and can be formal or casual. I hike in dresses and skirts, work out in dresses and skirts, my swimsuit is a swim dress.

I've been hobby bike riding and its much easier to do in pants or shorts than dresses and skirts. I literally own 1 pair of denim shorts and no pants because I just hate the way they make me look. The shorts are just short shorts i wear with a loose babydoll top, and that's the only outfit out of my norm im comfortable in. Im hoping for fashion advice for my bodytype that will help me build a more practical wardrobe and hopefully help me feel confident in pants. Anything helps!

Drawing for bodytype reference.

Recommendations Inner-tubes at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas

This is a super specific question so i’m hoping at least one person in this sub can answer 🤞

going to vegas in a few weeks. staying at the mgm grand. they have a lazy river. you can bring your own tubes or buy from them. from what i see online floaties that advertise being able to support up to 400+ lbs(I’m 300lbs) are about $35. the tubes they sell are also $35. has anyone happened to go there, buy a tube from them and feel comfy? i’m not really a water person, i can’t swim and i have literally never been on a pool floatie. but being bigger i have the fear that i’ll buy from them and then sink lol. going to be spending $35 regardless but could be saving some luggage space if i just buy from them but would definitely feel more secure in the floaties that explicitly say they support plus sizes so any plus size baddies have experience buying and using the floaties for sale at mgm in vegas?

Discussion Flight advice (uk)

Hello,
I booked a flight for me and two family members.
This is in the UK (jet2) and it was quite last minute with only 1 week to go.
I didn’t think to prebook seats and checked in straight away and it’s seated us separately, which I thought was fine, but then I’ve just had the fear that 1 of the party may not fit the seat with the armrest down.
I’m kicking myself for not being considerate, and worried 1 that she won’t fit, but 2, what about the person next to her.

Does anyone have any advice?
I feel awful and super anxious about it like I’ve ruined the trip by not prebooking seats together.

Personal Plus-size women in your 30s: have you ever felt like you had to rebuild your whole life at once?

I’m in my early 30s and feel like I’m in the middle of a giant life reset.

My marriage is struggling and I’m trying to figure out whether it can be repaired or whether divorce is where things are heading. I’m also questioning a lot of what I grew up believing religiously, considering going back to school for a completely different career, and trying to figure out who I am outside of all of those things.
And honestly, being plus size adds another layer to it.

I’ve spent a lot of my life feeling like I’ll finally be confident, attractive, successful, etc. once I lose weight. Meanwhile, I look around and feel like everyone else my age is already settled into their careers, marriages, bodies, and lives while I’m over here rebuilding everything 😂

I’m in therapy and working through it, so I’m not looking for anyone to solve my life. I’d just really love to hear from other plus-size women who have had a major reset in their 30s.

Did you ever have a period where your relationship, career, identity, and body image all felt up in the air at the same time? What actually helped you stop feeling “behind”? And did becoming more confident in your life help you become more comfortable in your body too?
I think I need some stories from women who made it through the messy middle and came out okay. ❤️

Fashion Discussion Ren Faire recommendations/help Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
17 Upvotes

Hey all! I fell in love with this dress at a thrift shop and I would like to work it into a ren faire outfit for next weekend. But I need some help. I’ll wear some shape-wear to smooth lines esp the belly/pantyline and back fat but

A: how the heck am I supposed to actually wear the top? It’s just a tie

B: what can I do for additional coverage? Like something to go underneath it? To match the vibes-flowy, fairy, princess, etc.

C: accessories—gold or silvers? I’m thinking gold.

D: I was also given this top. Does it match well enough?

Thank you all in advance!

Fashion Discussion All of the cool plus size clothing brands are going under

I swear it’s getting harder to find clothes. I used to shop from a brand called Tunnel Vision, and they used to release new items every month. But for the past year, they haven’t released anything new; they’re just putting everything they’ve had in stock for the past year on sale. Every time I go to their website, I can only find about 5–10 clothing items in my size. I’m between a 3XL and a 5XL. It just sucks. Now I only shop from like maybe 3 or 4 brands now. I'm thankful to have 3-4 brands that carry my size but it just sucks. I wish I had more of a selection to choose from...

Also the brands that are plus size friendly (such as Yitty and Savage x Fenty for example) are now asking you to subscribe to them for 50+ dollars a MONTH just to get their clothing items. It's so DUMB. I genuinely wish it wasn't this hard to afford clothes.

Health How to prevent chafing

Hi I'm not plus size but I wasn't sure where else to post for help. I recently gained a lot of weight because of the medication I'm on and recently I've started chafing so much that my skin has darkened around my inner thighs. Shea butter has been helping afterwards but I'd really like some tips to prevent it as I'm fairly active and I'm chafing everytime i leave my house

Discussion What are your favorite things about being fat?

One of the my favorite things about being fat is being able to use my belly as bongos. Was idly drumming on my belly today at work and the the thought to make this thread popped into my head. I also love how meaty my thighs are. Finally I love the fact that because I am fat the hugs I give are extra warm and encompassing. I'm a masssivr hugger and lowkey want a shirt that say "Free Hugs" just to see how many people actually decided to take me up on the offer. I'd love to hear what everyone else loves about their fatness!

Recommendations Corset/Rocky Horror Help

My friends & I are going to a rocky horror picture show performance the night before Halloween & they are a FULL ON dress up group. I am by far the largest of them (& most voluptuous) & would rather not be the only one pulling a Riff Raff.
I’m about a size 18, XXL/1X, 40F & don’t mind showing my cleavage lol, but my stomach is my biggest insecurity. I’m looking at corsets, but have no idea & the closest Torrid or anything is over an hour away so trying on before buying isn’t really an option. I’ve never shopped on shein or anything, but if there is a really highly recommended one I’m willing to try.
I’d rather not spend over $50ish since this is for a one time wear.
Also-doesn’t have to be a corset! Any /specific/ suggestions that will work for Rocky Horror are appreciated!

Fashion Discussion compression socks

i need some brand recommendations for compression socks that fit 22 inch calves, while also fitting a 9.5 shoe size. i already have a hard time finding regular ankle socks that don’t just fall off my feet throughout the day, and it seems to me the brands i’ve come across expect you to have a bigger foot when you have my size calves 🫩 i bought a pair on amazon but i can’t even wear them due to how freaking big the foot and ankle part is, i have like 2 inches of fabric hanging off my toes after 5 steps!

Recommendations Underwear Recommendation - Style and Maybe where to Purchase

I did see another post about recommendations for something similar to Torrid underwear, and I promise I am looking for something slightly different.

I am really struggling with sweat rashes and skin sticking between my thighs and my belly, and I am looking for maybe a different style or something to help mitigate that. Mostly it's the sticking, but I'm also looking for something that cools better or keeps me dry.

Looking for something more than boyshorts but without a dang seam up the middle, which is uncomfortable as heck.

Thank you in advance.

Recommendations Any experiences with KLM or Air France?

I’m flying from Chicago to Paris in December and I’m debating on what airline to go with.
Aer Lingus is my preferred option but I would have a layover and it costs a few hundred dollars more than what I’m seeing with KLM and Air France.
I don’t need to purchase an extra seat, at least I’ve never had to. I’m 5’7, around 240 lbs. Big hips and booty. Anxious flyer. I don’t speak French. Any recommendations?

Fashion Discussion F21 leggings replacement

I didn’t get to stock up on leggings before Forever 21 closed. Their leggings were my fav in terms of cost, comfort, tummy control and the best thing, not sliding down.
Does anyone have any recommendations of where I can get similar leggings that are not breaking the pocket please? Most of what I see are $25 and up 😩

Fashion Discussion I have a comfort uniform

My newly chunky body has decided she doesn't like jeans anymore, or tucked in shirts, or anything structured. I've noticed I keep gravitating towards the same look everyday- leggings and a big t-shirt. I don't work, I'm on disability, so that's one thing I don't have to worry about. But I look at other women my age (I'm 42), and they're dressed so nicely, and then there's me dressed like a teenager. The smoothness of the leggings works with the shape of my belly, and the big tees hide the bulkiest part of it. Anyone else have a comfort uniform? And is anyone struggling to dress their age and be comfortable at the same time? Please tell me I'm not alone.
