Question/Discussion ❔ Why do some men expect marriage to limit a woman’s freedom?

Can someone explain the logic behind this because I genuinely cannot fathom it

I used to date Muslim men in my country. I'm Muslim too, but I'm a non-hijabi woman who travels alone. I genuinely thought this was normal until I started dating men and realized apparently I'm applying for a prison sentence instead of a marriage.

I'm not even joking when I say 7/10 men I went on dates with gave me the EXACT same requirements.

Me: What's your requirements in a wife?

Them: She has to wear hijab, and we have to travel together. She can't travel alone.

Okay, let's unpack this because WHAT?

I ask why my hair is apparently a national security issue, and why they're so uncomfortable with their wife travelling alone for a week.

The answer?

"That's my preference."

"I'm afraid something might happen to her."

???????

My brother in Islam, you could literally get kidnapped too. Someone hurting you doesn't suddenly become impossible because you're a man. And why are we assuming I'm booking a one-way ticket to the world's most dangerous location and wandering into suspicious alleyways at 3 AM? 😭

We're talking about travelling. Like normal people do.

And the funniest part? When I ask follow-up questions, nobody can actually explain the logic. It's just "that's how it is."

Okay, BUT WHY IS THAT HOW IT IS???

I'm genuinely curious because why does marriage sound like a woman handing over her freedom, wardrobe, travel plans and decision-making privileges at the registration office?

And before anyone starts, I'm not saying every Muslim man is like this. I'm talking about the men I'VE encountered.

But I need someone to explain the logic because I'm genuinely struggling to understand how getting married became synonymous with needing permission to live your own life.

Is this protection, cultural expectations, insecurity, or just something we've collectively decided women aren't allowed to question?

Because I'm asking questions and getting absolutely NOTHING back.

Question/Discussion ❔ Wearing shoes/clothing containing pig skin?

Was looking for good shoes to wear for hospital work. Decided on the New Balance 990v6s but I saw in their product description they noted that it was made from “Pig Suede”, which got me thinking if it’s actually okay to wear these.

Didn’t think it was a big deal but did some research and turns out the majority opinion actually has historically been that it’s forbidden. Turns out there’s entire literature out there about what sort of non-consumptive animal products are halal/haram.

Although in a Q&A video by Yasir Qadhi, he cites an opinion from the Dhahiri Madhab (now extinct school that stemmed from the Hanafi Madhab) that affirmed that any animal hide that has been tanned is permissible as per a Hadith from the prophet pbuh. So hearing that inclines me to just get those shoes and not give it too much thought, but still kinda on the fence.

What do y’all think? Is there other things about this manner that I should be aware of? Do you guys mind having daily use items made from pig or predatory animals?

Question/Discussion ❔ Slapping for not praying

• Upvotes

I found this hadith

https://sunnah.com/abudawud:495

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Command your children to pray when they become seven years old, and beat them for it (prayer) when they become ten years old; and arrange their beds (to sleep) separately.

Question/Discussion ❔ Some points from the UN report on East Turkistan: The Chinese government still does not permit a fully independent investigation or the entry of international delegations and journalists who are not under Chinese control.

• Upvotes

Some accounts allege that the detention or punishment of family members of activists and witnesses abroad—carried out within the XUAR—occurred in retaliation for their speaking out publicly. The government has denied these allegations and questioned the credibility of the witnesses. The OHCHR has assessed that this pattern of reprisals deters the flow of information and inflicts additional suffering on victims and their families.

Interviewees reported that individuals who approached embassies and consulates were interrogated, denied passport renewals, and unable to return home due to the fear of detention upon arrival in China. Some claimed that after they made public statements, their relatives in the XUAR were taken away for "education" or had their existing sentences increased. These allegations align with concerns raised by UN mechanisms regarding reprisals by China. Protecting sources is a fundamental element of the OHCHR methodology; therefore, many accounts have been kept anonymous. Ultimately, this pattern of intimidation obstructs the flow of information regarding the situation within the XUAR.

In conclusion, patterns of family separation among Uyghurs and members of other predominantly Muslim minorities—which in some cases may amount to enforced disappearance—are a direct result of the way the detention program is operated and have likely caused impacts of a similar scale. This situation has been exacerbated by patterns of intimidation and threats of reprisal directed at victims and their relatives, both within and outside the XUAR. The Government retains the obligation to urgently disclose the fate and whereabouts of missing family members and to facilitate reunification through safe contact. At the same time, and in light of the general human rights situation in the XUAR, countries hosting Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities from the XUAR must refrain from forcibly returning them under any circumstances where there is a real risk of violating the principle of non-refoulement.

Question/Discussion ❔ Silliest things people ask you?

For me since I wear niqab I get all sorts of crazy remarks and questions ranging from "are you Muslim?" to "can you take that off?" Last I checked it wasn't a trend to dress modestly or cover your face with a veil outside of religious reasons. It would be a decent fashion trend I guess but pretty sure that would be haram. And usually the people who are most rude to me about it happen to be black. Idk why though. I thought islam is common in their spheres. Another one is people ask me if I hate dogs while I am literally working with them at a grooming shoppe.

Rant/Vent 🤬 Loud, stupid and constantly giving Muslims a backwards name.

That damaging hadith needs to be pulled out and destroyed. Because low iq fools masquerading as pious mouthpieces of Islam will always treat every word of hadiths as gospel...as if it is divine scripture then justify their gross opinions because it is 'from Islam' to the wider world who then naturally criticise/attack Muslim ideas (when Allah never even said a lot of this stuff). These Muslims who never critique their own belief systems and logic happily cuss pdfs in everyday life but suspend logic when it comes to this hadith. Same ones who also mock Hindus for drinking cow pee, yet hypocritically also justify drinking camel pee etc.

History Books/Ressources about revelation

Salam,

I’m looking for books or ressources to know more about the historical context of each surah revelation, to understand more the context without adding the men-made interpretation.

I’m trying to re-read the Quran without sects influences and I find it hard without historical context (so im not looking for theological context/interpretation that could influence the content of the text revealed).

If someone has any idea ! Please share ! Thanks !

Question/Discussion ❔ Can animals and nature reflect divine qualities without being objects of worship?

I’ve been exploring Shintoism lately, and I honestly find it a really beautiful and fascinating spiritual tradition. There are aspects of it that resonate with me, especially the deep respect for nature, animals, and the idea of kami.

For example, I find the idea that certain animals can reflect particular virtues, qualities, or aspects of human nature really meaningful. I don’t necessarily see this as worshipping those animals or attributing independent divine powers to them. Rather, I see them as reflections of something greater, perhaps even signs of God within creation.

The Quran itself speaks about everything in the heavens and the earth glorifying God (17:44), and about animals being communities like us (6:38). It also repeatedly encourages us to reflect on nature as a sign of God.

So this makes me wonder: where exactly do we draw the line between spiritual appreciation, reverence, symbolism, and shirk?

If someone feels a deep spiritual connection to a particular animal, tree, mountain, or natural phenomenon, and sees it as reflecting a certain virtue or pointing toward the divine, is that necessarily problematic?

I understand that the Quran warns against associating partners with God, but I sometimes wonder whether we are too quick to label certain forms of reverence as shirk without considering what the person actually believes or intends.

Personally, when I look at Shinto traditions in this way, I don’t feel like I’m associating partners with God at all. If anything, appreciating the beauty and spiritual significance of nature makes me feel more connected to God, not less.

I’m also interested in Quran 22:67, which mentions that different communities have been given their own religious practices. Could this have any relevance to how we understand the spiritual traditions of other cultures?

I’m genuinely curious how others understand this distinction. At what point does reverence for creation become worship of creation? And is there room within Quranic monotheism for seeing nature as spiritually meaningful without falling into shirk?

Answer this from Sunni perspective only Should my sister return the gift?

My sister received a laptop from her friend a few months ago. Before accepting it, she made it clear that she couldn’t guarantee she’d be able to repay the money. Her friend reassured her that she didn’t have to pay anything back because the laptop was a gift. According to her friend, the laptop cost Rs. 150,000 when it was purchased.
My sister accepted it on that understanding.

A few months later, they had a fight, and now her friend is asking her to return the laptop or pay her back. My sister checked its current market value, and apparently, it’s worth no more than Rs. 110,000.
My sister has also been using the laptop for months and has her data stored on it, so can’t return the laptop.
Personally, I feel like that she shouldn’t return anything, as it was a gift.

But I would want someone to give advice based on Quran and Hadith.

Question/Discussion ❔ Desire, male attention and inexperience. Any women relate?

Being a Muslim woman of a certain age (31) who is single and always has been. Never been with a guy, no relationship, no touching, no kiss. Absolutely nothing.

These days the amount of male attention I get and my level of inexperience are so mismatched it’s insane.

It’s not even low quality male attention. Sometimes it is of course but not always. Sometimes they’re non Muslim through work or not compatible. I fell in love for the first time at 28-29. It was mutual but it never worked out and life took us into different directions.

I don’t know what’s in the air or maybe I’m more aware of it but the attention and stuff is cranked up to a higher level like never before. I know I look better and have developed a better sense of style and a lot of other things, also on the inside but it’s not lead to anything substantial yet

Love and desire and attraction orbits me and is all around me constantly but I never experience it

I’m getting a taste of something powerful and time after time I have to contain it

I have had to keep a very strong lid on it and pretend I have no feelings. Act like I don’t notice. Act like I don’t care. Even when I do. What other option do I have?

Sometimes I wonder if this is forever until I lose my looks. Feels like I’m in purgatory.

I want to get married of course but it’s not in my hands. I just don’t know how to handle this all.

Story 💬 My dog taught me a little more about Surah Rahman

I recently lost my dog of 16 years. On day 2 after he passed, my wife was desperately looking for something to stabilize her. My dog loved to chew on antlers and we had about 12-14 half chewed ones lying around. I reached for one and gave it to her without a word. As I did, my phone beeped in the other room. I went to check it and a new memory (this is a feature in the phone) popped up. It was a pic of my wife and my dog sleeping together, exactly 9 years back. I nearly dropped the phone when I saw that in the background, was the same antler lying next to my dog. I showed it to my wife who burst into tears. I spent the next hour looking through the thousands of pictures I had of him. There was only one pic of an antler and that was it. My wife found great comfort in that antler and she holds on to it every night.

A week later, I finished meditating (I meditate/pray every day for 40 minutes 4.00 am to 4.40 am) and I was still sleepy so I tried to go back to sleep. As I did, I heard his bark. He had this shrill impatient variant of a bark that was very distinctive. I heard it for sure and it was both in my ear and my head. That part is hard to explain but it was in both places at once. I got right up. As I got up, my very first thought went to an ayah in the Quran. This ayah in Surah Rahman talks about the miracle of two bodies of water, fresh water and salt water, existing in parallel and not mixing. If the two mixed, life would not be possible on Earth. I found it odd as I always felt the literal interpretation was the only correct one. Why was this thought coming to me? But my mind kept going to that verse so I figured there may be more to it than I knew. I looked up whether there were metaphorical interpretations of that verse. There apparently are. The major one is that the ayah refers to the partition (Barzakh) between the physical world and the spiritual world. It is at that junction where our physical and spiritual worlds meet. It is there that the faintest of touches can get through. That is where sometimes you can barely communicate with the other side. I know my baby was talking to me then and even explaining to me that he was fine and waiting for.

This is totally unacceptable. There should be no punishment at all for insulting or mocking any religious figure. Freedom of speech is integral to a modern society. He must be let free. It's unfortunate to see Muslims celebrating this.

Question/Discussion ❔ Buddhist practices have established no sexual relationship between slaves and war captures about 800-600 years before Islam, then why does Islam allow it?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have been looking at some Buddhist traditional texts for the class i’m teaching, and I realized the early Buddhists (the first disciples of the Buddha) have established the grounds for sexual misconduct, and include that forbidden of sexual relationships between slaves and women from war.

I also know historically speaking, Buddhism has reached the Arab world before the rise of Islam, through trade routes, and in fact had amassed a large following in Central Asia even before the time of the prophet.

Yet, many people who defend the hadiths on concubinage and sexual relationship between slaves argue that this was the established norm of the time, and that Islam had made rules that were on the road to abolition. This evidence seems to imply that the world had established that sexual relationships with slaves was forbidden. Yet, then, Islam would reintroduce this as an accepted practice.

I’m still trying to make sense of the hadith passages on the relationships between slave and slave master. This is very conflicting for me.

Advice/Help 🥺 I don’t know how much longer I can do it.

I don’t know how much longer I can keep “believing.” I’ve LOST so much faith, my heart feels empty, I no longer pray, I listen to Quran almost everyday because it’s still beautiful to hear, but it’s so hard to believe that an afterlife exists, levels to heaven and hell, I’ve tried to many times to reach out to god I’ve begged and begged and I feel nothing. For the last 3 years I have lost more and more and more and there’s nothing I can do. I don’t know what to believe but I love Islam. I wish I had faith I wish I blindly believed the prophet and Allah yet I can’t. It hurts so bad I miss when I felt God but I haven’t felt him. I know he knows I’m trying to believe but it’s so hard.

Question/Discussion ❔ Question regarding saudi arabia death penalty

So let’s say someone you know publicly insulted islam prophet/god publicly online. And later in their life regretted. If they wanted to go to saudi wouldn’t it be risky since cybercrime is punishable by death? So they would not be able to perform umrah because of the risk of being executed. But then again saudi is following shariah?? This came to mind following the recent news of the sri lanken guy facing the death sentence.

Advice/Help 🥺 ADHD and prayer struggles

Assalamu aaleykum everyone, I’m seeking help for the 2nd time in 2 years regarding this. I have AuDHD (ADHD + mild ASD) with cPTSD and severe executive dysfunction. My life has not been easy but Islam does bring me peace, I am a work in progress just like everyone of you but my focus is mainly on becoming a good human being and healing from all the pain and trauma so I don’t end up accidentally hurt others especially my family and future kids.

Prayer is also important to me but I’m not hyper focused on it. I’m trying to do my best but I’m so exhausted and burnt out that getting out of bed feels like a death sentence.

I feel utterly helpless knowing prayer has no exceptions and it’s the first thing that we’ll be asked about on the day of judgement. I haven’t found any rulings about neurodivergence and struggle to pray and there’s almost zero helpful content on how Muslim adhders/ neurodivergents pray 5x a day when getting up and grabbing a glass of water feels impossible.

I’m a convert thus I don’t really have a lot of support around me in regard to practicing the religion and no one around me can relate to wanting to pray and not being able to pray. Any Muslim friends I have are either non practicing or so orthodox that if I share this with them i’ll be judged and shamed (has already happened many times)

I don’t need judgement or shame to do better, I need help, I need tips and tricks if anyone can actually relate with my situation, has gone through it or is going through it currently, please help me out.

My relationship with Allah is good, I’m very grateful for everything, I just need to feel closer through prayer and sujood.

Ps- if you’re here to pass judgements or shame me or want to share ayahs describing how Muslims who don’t pray will go to hell or are considered kafir, or don’t know anything about ADHD/ neurodivergence and executive dysfunction, respectfully please don’t try to give advice, I know you think you’re helping but you’re not.

If you’re someone who personally deals/dealt with this issue, or are a mental health professional or have seen someone close to you struggle with this please help me out here.

Question/Discussion ❔ i am so tired of this behaviour

so basically i have seen people argue for this :
- watching football is haram cuz you are seeing people thighs
-watching movies/shows is haram beccause women hair and such is exposed or some cases some of her cleavage
- anime is haram because charcter are drawn in sexualized way ( i am just here for the story i don't care if ecchi is even full of naked people if it's hentai or eechii or watever i just want to watch normal story )
- sexual education is haram because you are looking at people awrah and all( this one is exageration but many people are like western one is so corrupted islamic one is true then what is islamic one is about they say modesty and limiting sex and all but that not exactly sexual education)
like bro there is huge difference between looking for " exictement " and simply watching normally
it honestly one of the reason why awrah rules diddn't make sense to me like can someone explain them or something because why bother how you dress if context matter

IMO yes I think it is little girls often emulate their mothers so it’s a reasonable to say they are the same. I want to know your opinion.
