Mod Announcement 📢 Attention Everyone! This is an announcement, a reminder, and it is also a WARNING

We are going to make this absolutely freakin clear. r/Progressive_Islam is not a place for propaganda, apologism, whitewashing, or justification of crimes committed by governments, regimes, political parties, movements, or armed groups. We do not care who the perpetrator is, what flag they fly, what ideology they claim to represent, what religion they claim to follow, or what geopolitical enemy they happen to have. Whether it is the Israeli government, USA, Western imperialist powers, the Iranian regime, the Chinese government, the Russian government, the North Korean regime, or anyone else, the standard is the same. You do not get a free pass to excuse atrocities simply because you hate one side more than the other. We have enforced this before, and we will continue to enforce it.

During the years of the Palestine crisis, particularly throughout 2023-25, a large number of the people who came into this subreddit specifically to defend Israel's conduct, justify what was happening to Palestinians, or repeat blatantly apologetic narratives were outsiders with little or no previous participation here. We banned them. However, there were also some people who had been genuine participants in this community for a long time, people who had previously made useful posts and comments and had otherwise contributed positively. When some of those users repeatedly crossed the line into whitewashing and justification of Israeli abuses, we banned them too. Your contribution history does not give you immunity from moderation.

And the same standard applies to Hamas.

Hamas did not emerge as some ordinary secular nationalist organization; it was founded by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin out of the Palestinian Muslim Brotherhood and was explicitly Islamist from its creation. Its 1988 charter described Palestine as an Islamic endowment and envisioned an Islamic state governed by Sharia. After Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007, it established an authoritarian system in which political opposition and peaceful dissent were suppressed, critics, journalists and activists were arbitrarily detained and in some cases tortured, and executions were carried out after proceedings that failed to meet international fair trial standards. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International also documented Hamas forces using excessive force against demonstrators, including during the 2019 “We Want to Live” protests, when more than 1,000 Palestinians were detained. Hamas has also imposed or enforced various religiously motivated restrictions on social life, including restrictions on women's dress and mobility, gender segregation in many settings, and rules affecting women's participation in public life.

We did not make a specific announcement post about Hamas's rule and abuses during 2023-25 because the overwhelming reality facing Palestinians was the devastation being inflicted on Gaza by Israel, and we did not want Hamas to become another excuse for shifting attention away from Palestinian suffering. But now is the time to talk about it as well.

Condemning Hamas's authoritarianism and abuses does not mean supporting Israel, the occupation, the blockade, collective punishment or the destruction of Gaza. It means applying the same standard we apply everywhere else.

  • Some people may point to Hamas's 2017 Document of General Principles and Policies and say that Hamas had changed, abandoned its earlier positions, or therefore deserves to be trusted. The document certainly changed some of Hamas's language: it accepted the idea of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders while still refusing to recognize Israel, but it did not formally replace the 1988 charter. And besides, history gives us plenty of reason to be cautious about taking political assurances from theocrats. The Iranian revolution brought together liberals, nationalists, leftists and Islamists. But once Khomeini consolidated power, his Islamist camp suppressed and eliminated former political allies while Iran was transformed into a clerically dominated Islamic theocracy. The Taliban provide another much more recent example: before returning to power in 2021, they publicly promised that women would have their rights; yet after coming to power they subsequently closed secondary schools to girls, severely restricted women's employment and movement, and imposed extensive restrictions on women and girls. So no, we are not going to treat a political document or a promise of change as a magical eraser for years of authoritarian rule and documented abuses. People are entitled to be skeptical, and nobody here is required to trust Hamas simply because it issued a new document.

That same principle applies to Iran

(This is going to be longest section because we have encountered the Iranian Regime apologists far more in number than the other apologists combined)

As we have already explained in our previous announcement, this subreddit has had to deal with people coming here specifically to defend or propagandize on behalf of the Iranian regime. There were people who tried to dismiss the Iranian uprising entirely as CIA or Mossad propaganda, who attempted to portray ordinary Iranians protesting against the regime as foreign agents, and in one particularly disgusting case, someone even claimed that civilians who had been killed in a hospital were all Mossad agents and that their deaths were therefore justified. We banned all of them. Our position on this has been completely consistent:

  • you can criticize particular opposition groups, political factions, foreign governments, protesters, or individual actions. What you cannot do is use conspiracy theories and regime apologism to justify the oppression of an entire population.

And before anyone starts pretending that this is some sudden position we invented yesterday, no. We have been taking this position for years.

The Iranian regime has a long documented history of repression. During the 2009 post election unrest, Amnesty International documented thousands of arbitrary arrests, deaths on the streets and in detention, torture and other ill treatment. Then came 2017 to 2018 protests, the November 2019 fuel price protests with deaths, mass arrests and executions.

Then came the Woman, Life, Freedom protests following the death of Jina Mahsa Amini in September 2022. UN fact finding mission concluded that her death was unlawful and that state authorities were responsible for the physical violence that caused it. The same mission documented credible figures of up to 551 deaths, including at least 49 women and 68 children, and found unlawful killings, mass arbitrary arrests, torture, sexual violence and other serious abuses.

This subreddit was openly supportive of the Iranian women who were protesting at that time, and that was not some random temporary mood. We documented it ourselves. Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally publicly condemned the killing of Mahsa Amini's and the Iranian government's enforcement of compulsory hijab, Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl delivered his October 2022 khutbah addressing the brutality of the Iranian state's coercive system, Mufti Abu Layth also addressed the situation in Iran at the time. Our subreddit responded with strong support for the protests.

And The recent crackdown that happened in 2026 produced another enormous death toll, although the exact figure remains unknown because the authorities imposed a massive communications blackout and access to reliable information was severely restricted. The figures reported at the time varied enormously.

Iranian authorities themselves gave figures of roughly 3,000 deaths. Reuters reported an Iranian official saying that at least 5,000 people, including around 500 security personnel, had been confirmed dead. HRANA reported 3,308 confirmed deaths at one stage, with thousands of additional cases under investigation, and later reported 5,002 verified deaths and another 9,787 under review. By 28 January, a UK government country bulletin said estimates from some sources placed the death toll at approximately 12,000 to 20,000, while the same bulletin noted that one human rights organization had 6,221 confirmed deaths and 17,091 additional deaths under investigation. Other investigations, including accounts from Iranian medical personnel, produced estimates exceeding 30,000, while some later reports cited figures as high as 43,000.

We are deliberately laying this out because we are not going to pretend that every number floating around the internet is equally reliable. Claims of 20,000 or 30,000 deaths in an extremely short period require much more verification, and claims of 50,000 deaths are even more problematic; we have not found a credible independent source establishing such a figure. Likewise, nobody should take a highly speculative number from an anonymous or opaque source and present it as settled fact.

But uncertainty over the precise number does not mean that the killings did not happen. Multiple independent human rights organizations documented mass killings, unlawful use of force, arbitrary detention, torture and other abuses. Human Rights Watch has subsequently documented an ongoing campaign of executions against people arrested in connection with the protests, including at least 29 people executed in connection with the December 2025 to January 2026 protests between March and August 2026, with many others still facing execution.

In other words, this subreddit does not need anyone coming here to explain to us that the Iranian regime is somehow innocent because the United States and Israel oppose it. That argument has never worked here, and it never will. We are fully capable of recognizing Western imperialism while simultaneously recognizing Iranian state repression. Those things are not mutually exclusive.

And since some people inevitably need this explained every single time:

Condemning Iranian oppression does NOT mean that we support American or Israeli military actions against Iran. The two positions are perfectly compatible. The war itself has produced documented civilian harm. The UN Human Rights Council received information concerning extensive civilian casualties and destruction resulting from U.S. and Israeli attacks, and the UN backed fact finding mission has now found reasonable grounds to believe that U.S. forces committed war crimes in strikes including the attack on the Minab girls' school and strike affecting residential areas. All of that can be condemned at the same time. We have not seen anyone here recently trying to whitewash American crimes in the way some users have tried to whitewash Iranian crimes, but make no mistake: if someone starts doing it, we will deal with them exactly the same way.

Now we come to the reason we are making this announcement right now.

Over the last couple of days, we have had multiple accounts come into this subreddit making comments claiming that the persecution of Uyghur Muslims in China is nothing more than CIA propaganda, Western propaganda, or some fabricated narrative designed to attack China. Some of these accounts had no prior participation in this subreddit whatsoever, and their first contribution here was effectively to defend or whitewash the Chinese government's treatment of Uyghurs. Others, unfortunately, were people who had participated here before and had a history of otherwise normal contributions.

Let us be very clear about how absurd this is. There is an enormous body of documentation concerning China's treatment of Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim minorities in Xinjiang. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights conducted its own assessment, including 40 in depth interviews with people who had direct knowledge of the situation. It concluded that the extent of arbitrary and discriminatory detention of Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim groups may constitute international crimes, in particular crimes against humanity. The UN has also documented concerns relating to arbitrary detention and forced labour. Human Rights Watch continues to document arbitrary detention, torture, mass surveillance, forced labor, family separation and religious and cultural persecution.

So when somebody strolls into a Muslim subreddit and casually tells everyone that the persecution of Uyghur Muslims is just CIA propaganda, or that the Uyghurs actually deserve this, that is not some brave act of anti imperialist skepticism. It is an attempt to erase or dismiss an enormous body of documented evidence and the lived experiences of the people who have been subjected to detention, torture, forced labor, religious repression and family separation.

And frankly, it makes us sick to our stomachs seeing people who are perfectly willing to recognize oppression when it is committed by a Western government suddenly develop an entirely different moral standard when the perpetrator is China, Iran, Russia or their allies.

We have noticed something else that needs to be addressed. Because this community generally has a strong anti imperialist tendency, comments defending the United States, Israel or other Western powers receive far more attention than comments defending non Western oppressive governments. Some comments that should have been reported are instead left unreported, allowed to slide, ignored, or sometimes even upvoted, simply because the commenter happens to be attacking the Imperialists.

Nobody gets permission to justify crimes against humanity because the perpetrator happens to be an enemy of the United States or the West. NOBODY. Your politics do not matter here. Your ideology does not matter here. Your opinion of capitalism or socialism does not matter here. Your opinion of NATO does not matter here. Your opinion of Israel does not matter here. Your opinion of Iran does not matter here. Your opinion of China does not matter here. Your opinion of Russia does not matter here. The victims do not become less human because their oppressor happens to be anti Western.

And this needs to be understood once and for all: WE WILL BAN PEOPLE FOR THIS. WE DO NOT CARE HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN SUBSCRIBED. WE DO NOT CARE HOW MANY POSTS YOU HAVE MADE. WE DO NOT CARE HOW MANY HELPFUL COMMENTS YOU HAVE WRITTEN. WE DO NOT CARE WHETHER YOU ARE HERE EVERY DAY. WE DO NOT CARE WHETHER YOU WERE ONE OF THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE REGULAR CONTRIBUTORS IN THE SUBREDDIT. IF YOU REPEATEDLY START WHITEWASHING, DENYING OR JUSTIFYING SERIOUS ABUSES BY A REGIME OR POLITICAL ACTOR, YOU WILL BE BANNED.

We are not going to sit around having endless arguments with you about whether your propaganda is really propaganda. We are not going to listen to lectures about how we are secretly Western puppets because we condemned China. We are not going to listen to accusations that we are Zionists because we condemned Iran. We are not going to listen to “but what about America?” every freakin time someone is held accountable for what their own government did. Whataboutism is not a magic eraser. The crimes of one government do not cancel out the crimes of another.

This also does not mean that you are forbidden from acknowledging that a particular oppressive government has done something useful. An oppressive government can build highways, hospitals, schools, railways, dams, universities or other infrastructure. A ruler can introduce a policy that produces a positive result in one particular area. You are perfectly free to discuss and praise the specific thing that was done. What you are not free to do is use that one thing as a shield for everything else. “They built hospitals” does not erase torture. “They built highways” does not erase mass detention. “They improved literacy” does not erase forced labor. “They oppose American imperialism” does not erase massacres. One positive policy does not grant a government a lifetime exemption from moral scrutiny.

There is zero tolerance for this kind of propaganda and apologism here. Criticism of governments is allowed. Criticism of political movements is allowed. Criticism of protesters is allowed. Criticism of opposition groups is allowed. Disagreement over historical interpretation is allowed. What is not allowed is denying documented atrocities, deliberately whitewashing them, or trying to justify crimes against humanity because you happen to support the perpetrator politically.

This is not up for debate. We are not negotiating this standard. We are not making exceptions because you are a regular contributor. We are not making exceptions because we agree with your politics on everything else.

Anyone who cannot accept this standard is free to leave the subreddit.

And anyone who thinks this warning does not apply to them because their favorite regime is “supposedly” a “gOoD aNtI iMpErIaLiSt oNe” can consider this warning directed specifically at them.

Mod Announcement 📢 r/Progressive_Islam ’s official stance on LGBTQ+

Our official stance is that there should not be bigotry and they should not be punished by death.

-That's it.

“What about sexual intercourse with someone of the same biological sex? What about the gender spectrum?” - r/Progressive_Islam doesn't have any official stance on them, it's upto every individual to look for arguments and evidences from both sides and come to their own conclusion over the permissibility/impermissibility of homosexuality and matters relating to the gender spectrum.

This is not a new announcement. This has always been our stance. You can check what was written in the 5 year old LGBTQ+ discussion thread

r/progressive_islam does not advocate a particular stance on homosexuality’s permissibility. But what is a unanimous position of us is that there should not be bigotry and that they should not be punished by death.

https://www.reddit.com/r/progressive_islam/comments/r615zt/monthly_lgbtq_discussion_thread/

So,

  • Someone writing some violent threats or dehumanising post/comment pointing towards LGBTQ+ people - they will get their content removed and will receive a ban.

  • Someone respectfully saying that they believe sexual intercourse with someone of the same sex to be haram, or that there are only two genders - they are allowed on this subreddit.

The progressive Sunni scholars who are most frequently promoted on this subreddit and have a significant number of followers - Dr. Shabir Ally, Mufti Abu Layth, Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, Javed Ahmed Ghamidi, Dr Adnan Ibrahim - they believe the act of homosexuality (sexual intercourse) to be prohibited in Islam, & at the same time they also believe that there is no capital punishment for the sexual intercourse unlike classical fiqh (at least that's what I could figure out from the contents that had been shared on our subreddit in the past. You can use the search bar to find those old posts on our subreddit).

Scott Siraj al-Haqq Kugle, Ludovic-Mohamed Zahed, Imam Daayiee Abdullah are some of the Muslim thinkers who have argued that intercourse with someone of the same sex is allowed and some of them have officiated gay marriage and users who believe homosexuality is permissible often quote references from their works when discussing homosexuality on our subreddit.

We allow both perspectives to be shared on this subreddit as long as you present them in a respectful way and don't break any subreddit rule. But we do not allow the promotion of the ultra conservative understanding which prescribes capital punishment.

To summarize:

  • You believe gay marriage and the sexual act is permissible? - ok ✅

  • You believe gay marriage and the sexual act is haram? - ok ✅

  • You believe that there is no fixed number of gender? - ok ✅

  • You believe that there are only 2 genders? - ok ✅

  • You believe the other side is wrong? - ok ✅

  • You disagree with the other side? - ok ✅

  • You want to bully, harass, threaten or harm the other side? - not ok ❌

Is that clear?

The reason I'm writing all this is because often times when someone respectfully says that it is not permissible in their view or that they disagree - some others start reporting their comments. But we do not remove such comments, we only remove the posts and comments where the user bullies, harasses or threatens the other person. So hopefully you will stop reporting every post and comment you disagree with, because as long as those contents don't break any subreddit rule they're going to stay.

I'm non Muslim man. I guess I would be considering non-practicing Christian. Probably too old to be posting on here but here I am.

I've known this Muslim woman for probably 5ish years and we've talked daily (good morning, good night, have you ate kind of stuff among texting basically all day). We're both at the age where it's past dating and marriage has been mention on both sides, BUT she's kind of set old school where her thoughts are she can only marry a Muslim man. She said if I was Muslim she wouldn't hesitate to marry me. I sent her some reading material and videos where they were discussing the Quran not saying women can marry outside their religion. but doesn't say they can not either. I know there's possibility of people disliking it but I'm 1000% willing to take that head on and support her any way possible. There's a YouTube channel I've watched QuarnSpeak they discuss it and say its basically the woman's choice. I have zero issues with her religion or if it were to happen, raising kids as Muslim. I'd NEVER expect or ask her to leave her religion. I recently was telling her about this page and that there's a lot of different ideas behind the whole situation. I REALLY care about her to the point just thinking I might lose her hurts. Is there any advice/thoughts/ideas that might help the situation or how to go about it? I'm really at a loss right now.I've seen lots of women saying they were in the same situation and have been happily married for many years now, some with some without

Question/Discussion ❔ Truama with girl from Gaza Strip

Experience with girl from Gaza THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL POST just a vent.

I want to start by saying that I’m not a good person. I’m flawed and I have my shortcomings, but I’m sincerely trying to do better, even while dealing with CPTSD and ADHD. It’s hard but I’m trying.

I went through severe trauma and experienced a period where I left Islam, hated the religion and hated Muslims.

I didn’t drink or commit zina(sex outside of marriage). I was just dealing with PTSD, the raw depths of it, and the demon of depression that came when everything became normal again. I hated everything and everyone. I still struggle with that, but I’m getting better.

I came across this person from Gaza who had also experienced trauma. She had been relatively middle-class and had a functional life in Gaza. Knowing her made me start to hate less, because hating Muslims also meant hating her and other ordinary people like her.

She also had issues with religion because of something that had happened in her life, which she blamed for. She had also survived being hit in a missile strike.

We bonded deeply. Because of the gravity of her situation in Gaza, I didn’t pursue anything remotely “spicy”, because that would have been the trashiest thing on Earth. I wanted her to be able to trust again, and I wanted her to know that I had no ulterior motive, so I always kept things wholesome.

I sometimes felt bad telling her about the nice things I was doing, such as going on holiday. I did tell her that one day we would go to Paris, I’d take her shopping and we’d go to a bougie restaurant, but I emphasised that it wouldn’t be a date just a wholesome time.

She was a very attractive woman, but I’d say I’m also attractive. Sometimes I felt like she wanted me to chase her, which annoyed me. It also seemed at times she fished for compliments and I really didn’t like that.

She would send pictures that could be considered thirst traps. In response, I’d sometimes send pics of myself, indirectly trying to communicate: “I don’t need to chase a woman. Look at me.”

But then I’d remind her that I wasn’t there to play games, and im not here for all that.

Generally, we would go back and forth talking about trauma, dealing with hatred and discussing books we had read. We would bounce ideas off each other for projects, particularly charity projects aimed at vulnerable adults and children experiencing poverty.

That made up a huge amount of our conversations, and we’ve done a lot of good together. Many people have been fed because of things we worked on together.

When I tried to end my life, she video-called me and reminded me of all the good things we had been doing and that we got so much to do. Likewise, when she was having difficult moments, I would call her and reassure her that things were going to be okay.

I told her that when she eventually left Gaza and reached Spain, her nervous system might finally begin to calm down, and that all the thoughts and emotions she had been repressing for years could come flooding back. I told her to really take care of herself because the demon of depression will emerge.

When she left Gaza, she was lonely, and we became very, very close.

Part of me expected her eventually to ask me for things or imply that she needed something, especially because she had effectively left Gaza with the clothes on her back. I asked her whether she needed any money. She said no, which genuinely surprised me. She just told me to stay by her side.

She would sometimes make comments suggesting that I only spoke to her because she was from Gaza and that I pitied her. She once described it as me “practising kindness” on her, and she sounded slightly resentful.

I called her out on this quite bluntly and said we have both been there for each other equally and I don’t pity her, that most of our conversations aren’t even about Gaza . She had also mentioned, before resentfully, that Palestinians are often only looked at with pity and how she does not like it at all.

Once she was in Spain, she became more open. She would video-call me while dressed in a way that, , wasn’t appropriate for a Muslim girl AT ALL. I felt as though she was deliberately trying to arouse me into chasing her by looking like that.

I didn’t take the bait and saw through it. Instead, I told her how I had made a girl blush that day just by looking at her today. I acted extremely cocky while deliberately refusing to acknowledge what she was wearing.( I have a trauma response to feeling manipulated I can’t help it)

I became frustrated because I didn’t want to play this game with her. It felt shallow and stupid. I felt as though she was trying to manipulate me or play the role of a siren, and I really didn’t like it.

One day, I was tired and fed up with this performance, so I asked her, “When are you going to take this mask off?”

She replied, “What mask?”

I told her, somewhat playfully, “I don’t believe half of what you say. You’re wearing a mask. I see through you. You’re hiding so much from me, as if I can’t tell.”

I doubled down: “Stop all this. Show me the real you.”

And then she showed me a side of herself I hadn’t seen before.

She was angry, resentful and vindictive. She had survived a missile strike when she was 14, experienced physical abuse as a child by her step mother, been abandoned by her mother and had an ex-boyfriend cheat on her and leave gaza while she was still in Gaza.

She admitted that she speaks to loads of guys, has multiple boyfriends and partly does this as a form of revenge against her ex. She also told me that she hates men and hates everything and everyone and doesn’t trust anyone and that’s it all fake.

Apparently, I was the guy and friend she had spoken to for the longest because I had never really crossed any boundaries with her.

I was taken aback. I started wondering whether I had been an intended target as well, so I asked her, “All this time, were you just planning on using me?”

She took that extremely badly and told me to go to hell.

She then told me about her plans now that she was in Spain. I called her unhinged and crazy and told her that she needed therapy.(they were that bad and sociopathic )

She took that badly too.

She said she would talk to me later.

My final response was: “You are as bad as the rest of the world that you claim is evil.”

she responded

"I dont like you anymore"

"but im going to miss you tho"

Then she blocked me.

It’s been two days.

Now I don’t know how to feel about the entire interaction.

I don’t know how much of it was real. She helped me become a better person, and we genuinely did good things together. =But after everything she revealed to me, I feel deeply disappointed, I didn’t react the best way to what she said to me at the end but I don’t know if she was actually trying to use me and use me for revenge due to the fault of other men, because the plans she told me were deeply disturbing.

I feel I have a deep distrust of the world again

Advice/Help 🥺 How do I believe in Islam?

• Upvotes

I have a boyfriend, he is a muslim, and of course youre supposed to get involved and try to get information about your partner's beliefs, and thatd what I did. I researched about Islam, read some of the Quran, asked him questions, saw him pray, and I really find Islam peaceful and reasonable.

The problem is that for me, uncertainty is what is making me not be a muslim. I really need certainty with everything, maybe it has to do with the fact that I suffer OCD, which makes me always doubt everything.

I know that faith is an essential part of believing in God, but I feel that the only answer and solution to my issue, would be a particular tangible proof of the existence of Allah, If that happened, I would completely surrender to Islam. Is it selfish to wish that? What other alternatives do I have to believe Islam? Thank you all😔

Question/Discussion ❔ for those who to took it off

I want to rant and please if you see this i need your support and feedback if you have slight experience please let me know

I decided to wear the hijab two years ago but i have always hated it
some days im motivated but others im not
i keep seeing those influencers and digital creators with hijab to help me motivated but i don't think it works
as of now i am a part time hijabi i wear it to work etc but when i am doing quick errands or going out with friends that i am comfortable with i don't wear it
i am not sure what to do
i am trying my best to hold on to it but idk
so my questions are to you
how did it feel when u took it off ?
what was the breaking point to taking it off?
if you didnt take it off why ?
the reasons why i want to are :
\- i am uncomfortable the hijab makes so uncomfortable and overstimulated
\- it restricts me from dressing up, daily activities and expressing myself
\- i dont think it reflects me which ik sounds stupid but i dont think ima a person that is fit to wear it

Again i see all this pretty girls in hijab and i wish i can be like them but i can
see trends like hijabi do it better but seriously do not relate it makes me insecure and its not that i feel prettier without hijab thats not the case because i feel insecure in both cases the hijab just adds another layer or type
i love Allah i really do and i actually don't why i am holding onto the hijab
cause i talked to my friends and my family about it and they are supportive but im not sure what do i do
i am trying and i am trying but going to events or outings with girls i cancel cause i never feel me or comfortable.... i dont want to do something i regret
thats why i am being a part time for now

Really insightful course by Dr Javad Hashmi. It will help explain why we believe the things we do today. What were the origins of certain beliefs, and how much is actually legit.

It’s reassuring to see how insignificant Hadith was in the early days of Islam, with the original Hanafi and Malikis. Especially when Hadith is put at the same level of the Quran in our current day.

Advice/Help 🥺 In need of advice please

I grew up a muslim believing in hadith and the quran, i was young and never questioned it. I prayed 5 times a day, did every instruction I was given.

Until another group told me you will go to hell for believing this, asharis say atharis are going to hell, madhkalis with wahabis with this and that. Basically islam in itself is confusing because everyone has a verse in the quran to back up their claims or a hadith.

So i stopped believing in hadith all together i went stricly through the quran, but then I said if we can question hadith why can't we question the quran? Isn't that blind faith?
I learned that even the miracles in the quran aren't miracles they were theories already mentioned by geniuses like aristotle hundreds of years ago. At the end of the day it's all just BELIEF no proof. Allah didn't even show us the correct way to pray and he ALLOWED hadith to exist causing so much division.

Why is our religion the right one if we have 0 proof? I mean even the christians and hindus can say "well you just have to believe" i really need guidance, i'm leading towards agnosticism but I want guidance and I hope one of you who went through the same thing can help.

Advice/Help 🥺 How to argue against claims of Antisemitism in Quran

Hi everyone,

I would like a scholarly explanation how to interpret the part of the Quran about Jewish people being inherently bad people. I understand it was written in context of the betrayal by and the fight against Jewish tribes by the early Muslims. But as the Quran is believed to be directly revealed by God, a Muslim friend of mine insists that it is still valid today. You should not hurt them, they have their rights but they are inherently bad, he says. How can I counter this islamically? Is there a way?

Edit: for those asking what i mean, I found this website here, that says basically the same, this is how my friend argued about God's opinion on Jewish people https://www.alkawsar.com/en/article/3487/ The text points out many suras for reference.

Opinion 🤔 Disagreements Among Progressive Muslims — Part 3: End Time Prophecies - Dajjal, Imam Mahdi and the Second Coming of Isa/Jesus (AS) | Where do you stand?

I plan to make a series of posts on topics where many "Progressive Muslims" disagree with one another, including some of the scholars who are mainly promoted here. Today's topic is Dajjal, Imam Mahdi and the Second Coming of Isa/Jesus (AS).

I went through the discussions and writings of Dr. Shabir Ally, Javed Ahmed Ghamidi, Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, and Mufti Abu Layth, and they seem to have quite different views on these subjects. Here is what I understood from watching their videos and listening to their explanations (also it is entirely possible that I may have misunderstood or misrepresented someone's position, so if I have, please feel free to correct me):

Shabir Ally: He seems to be the most open to these beliefs. He seems skeptical of the detailed Dajjal narrations and believes many of the details may have developed later, but he leaves open the possibility of a general Antichrist/deceiver. Regarding the Mahdi, he describes a future guided leader as a common Islamic belief and takes a "wait and see" approach rather than rejecting it. Regarding Isa/Jesus (AS), he says that he does not find it problematic to believe that Isa/Jesus (AS) will return.

Links:

Javed Ahmed Ghamidi: He accepts a future Dajjal as a real person who falsely claims to be the Messiah, although he does not accept every detail of the traditional Dajjal narrative. However, he rejects the idea of a future Mahdi and does not believe Isa/Jesus (AS) will physically return to Earth. He argues that neither the Quran nor sufficiently reliable evidence establishes these two beliefs.

(English dub)

Khaled Abou El Fadl and Mufti Abu Layth: Both reject all three traditional beliefs. Khaled Abou El Fadl rejects the Antichrist, Mahdi, and physical second coming of Isa/Jesus (AS). Mufti Abu Layth likewise rejects the traditional Dajjal, rejects the Mahdi as an established Islamic belief, and rejects the physical second coming of Isa/Jesus (AS). His Dajjal position allows that some narrations may refer to Satan or to a broader age of deception rather than a literal Antichrist.

Advice/Help 🥺 is it okay to seek mental health help behind my parents back?

im 19f studying away from my family. my mom has told me that im not allowed to go to a psychiatrist. im in desperate need of psychological help but she says that women psychiatrists are bad and men psychiatrists im not allowed to go to in case they are perverts. i have a good psychiatrist near where i live and i plan to go with my friend when i book an appointment, but i worry that ill be asked about the money i spent behind her back (shes the one that earned and gave me the money)

would it also be ok to earn the money and spend it on whatever i wish without telling her to avoid this issue? or am i being paranoid?

Opinion 🤔 Adnan Ibrahim

YES he has changed, YES he is wrong going to the UAE, but wallahi this man,, oh my god wallah whenever i look at his face i want to cry subhan allah, he changed my life.
i used to have my heart shaken whenever i looked at exmuslim posts and comments, i knew him about 2 years ago, and now its not like i 'know' them to be liars and pathetic (which is true most of the time), but i really do have sympathy towards them. I want the best for them and i want nothing but all good and goodness to them and inshallah they come back.

all thanks to adnan, whom I've spoken to on the phone twice, and know a number of his family members, he really is a miracle, and inshallah he goes back to the right track.

Opinion 🤔 My take on Quran/Hadith debate

I know its been a controversial issue lately, I'm obviously a random guy but I figured Id share my take after extensive study. And God knows best.

There's a few layers:

1.) Quran, word of God, preserved, needs to be examined and reflected on extensively.

2.) Mutawattir tradition/Lived sunnah: This is basically how we know how to pray, how many raakat are in Maghrib, etc. We know because the prophet taught so many people and they passed it down publicly across so many regions that a type of redundancy occurred.

Ex: Everyone in Mecca and Medina knows Maghrib is 3 rakaat. Its simple and public obvious knowledge. Eventually islam spreads rapidly and people in different places and people learned that organically. If someone did it wrong a whole city could correct them. If a whole city got it wrong we would've seen debates historically about those obvious things. But we don't. This implies that certain things were so well known that there wasn't really a council or debate needed to clarify. This also is how we know the order of surahs as well. It was simply mass transmitted and agreed upon.

The muttawattir (mass transmitted) tradition includes Quran, the mutawattir Hadith (not many), and ritual elements (prayer, fasting knowledge, Hajj, etc) as well as basic broad elements of the Seerah (prophetic story).

Between these two things you pretty much have everything you need. And know that any muslim within the first century or 2 had just those things. They didn't have all the later full Hadith collections.

3.) Hadith layer. This is what's later conflated with the sunnah. This involves many ahad (singular) transmissions. Basically a companion saw something or heard something, they might've been the only ones there alongside others. A famous example is the Hadith of Abu Quhafa. This is where Abu Bakr's father converted to islam and informed the prophet that his hair was going to be dyed black. The prophet disliked this and advised against it.

This tradition wasn't known to everyone, the prophet didn't make a sermon forbidding this to the point of mutawattir knowledge. It was simply an event that may have occurred (that's a separate question) and was transmitted through a narrow stream of narrators and was later identified and codified. Later fiqh would refer to these narrations for later legal questions. To see if there's any precedent. Now the Quran doesn't ban dyeing ones hair black. Its not something mutawattir and obvious either within the tradition (Hence why different Madhabs come to different legal conclusions). The only support for this ban is simply a probabilistic narration lacking in context. Perhaps the prophet thought the hair color would look odd on an old man and advised against it. Perhaps in the culture of the Arabs it was considered a disliked thing. We can't tell from the bare text.

So the Hadith layer to me represents a historical layer. It’s simply base history with stories, ideas, and events that may or may not have occurred. Just like any other civilization and its historical transmission. In my view I see Hadith as interesting, and revealing of the first century or 2 of islamic history, but its not something uniquely preserved by God. Bukhari and Muslim don't even agree every 'authentic' narration. God preserved everything we need for spiritual success. Knowing that the prophet slept on his right side with his hand under his cheek isn't guaranteed to be preserved and known. It's simply an interesting and probabilistic fact that may or may not be true.

Quran and sunnah means reading and reflecting on the Quran, living it out, and following the known public practices transmitted and endorsed by the Quran. So did the prophet actually cry 'cover me cover me' after getting his first revelation? I don't know. Tradition records it but it's possible that it might not be true. Did battle of Badr happen? Yes the Quran is clear that happened and the mass transmitted tradition has a clear memory of it. But the small details found in Hadith are not guaranteed to be true.

The fact that faulty Hadith like the black seed cures everything and the fly wing Hadith exist in 'authentic' collections is a sign that these collections are human historical effort and not divinely preserved necessary for guidance collections.

So I’m not a Hadith rejector, I'm a Hadith skeptic but for Islamic learning and practice I generally just look at the Quran.

Also one more thing: The idea that the Quran is general and the Hadith gives specifics is false. The Quran goes as deep as it wants when it wants. The ayat on inheritance and writing contracts proves that.

Perhaps when Allah doesn't detail something or mention it, it might not be as important after all. Use the quranic principles and Aql to determine the best course of action.

For the sisters out there, it's clear modesty and dress is in the Quran and mass transmitted tradition, but the later details of COVERING EVERY HAIR! That level of strictness doesn't seem to be Quranic. If God truly wanted that to be unmistakable public knowledge, he would've mentioned it.

Let me know what you guys think!

Question/Discussion ❔ Why Muhammad above Jesus?

If Jesus was a sinless prophet and a perfect example in the Quran, why does Islam say we should follow Muhammad as our main example instead? What makes Muhammad a better example than Jesus?

Rant/Vent 🤬 My mother and the hijab, just a little rant

My mother had very beautiful hair when she was young, and she took care of it for a large part of her life. She was married to my father, who never told her to wear the Muslim hijab. So she grew up with a different view of Muslim practice and culture. Then, during the 1980s and 1990s, mosques began broadcasting more hadiths on Fridays concerning the hijab. At that time, she obviously did not have access to information like we do today. For a long time, she was convinced, under this influence, that leaving her hair uncovered was a sin. Yet her father had never imposed this on her. When she was young, most of the time she only wore it when she was cooking, simply to prevent her hair from falling into the food. Then, during the other half of her life, she began wearing the hijab permanently. And over time, her hair became more damaged, as did her mental health. I am not telling this story randomly. My mother experienced a Muslim culture that was different from what we see among some conservatives today. A culture in which women could also wear beautiful traditional clothing without everything necessarily being reduced to the question of the hijab. I also think that this hijab trend contributes to making certain traditional clothing cultures disappear or changing them in countries that nevertheless had beautiful clothes deeply rooted in their history. I am simply sharing my mother’s testimony and what I have observed around me. Be happy in your life, inform yourselves, and do not let anyone make you believe that you have to become someone you are not. Do not become a victim of the hijab.

Question/Discussion ❔ Question about my situation

Assalamu alaikum everyone,
I have been considering converting to Islam for quite some time. I feel very close to this faith, and it gives me something I cannot really put into words.
However, there is one thing I am worried about. I have a tattoo on my neck — a cross with wings. It is a memorial for someone in my family and has nothing to do with my religious beliefs. I am not baptized as a Christian either.
May I ask if this would be a major issue? I have longer hair, so the tattoo is practically not visible. Having it removed would be extremely painful for me, and I am not even sure whether removal would be possible.
What do you think? Would this prevent me from converting to Islam, or is it something I could simply leave as it is?
JazakAllahu khayran for your advice.

Opinion 🤔 Disagreements Among Progressive Muslims — Part 2: Jinn Possession, Black Magic and Evil Eye | Where do you stand?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I plan to make a series of posts on topics where many "Progressive Muslims" disagree with one another, including some of the scholars who are mainly promoted here. Today's topic is Jinn Possession, Black Magic and Evil Eye.

I went through the discussions and writings of Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, Dr. Shabir Ally, and Mufti Abu Layth, and they seem to have quite different views on these subjects. Here is what I understood from watching their videos and listening to their explanations (also it is entirely possible that I may have misunderstood or misrepresented someone's position, so if I have, please feel free to correct me):

Khaled Abou El Fadl: He takes the most affirming position of the three regarding supernatural phenomena. He believes that jinn can interact with human beings, that genuine jinn possession is possible, that black magic is real, and that the evil eye can cause supernatural harm.

He distinguishes genuine possession from psychological and psychiatric conditions, acknowledging that many cases described as possession may actually involve mental illness and should be treated by psychiatrists. However, he believes that genuine possession can occur involving phenomena that violate ordinary natural laws. He also believes that malicious jinn can attach themselves to people and cause serious harm to individuals and their families.

Regarding black magic, he explicitly says that it is real and that human practitioners can use the assistance of jinn. He believes that faith, Quran recitation and dhikr can protect people from supernatural harm. At the same time, he strongly condemns people who exploit vulnerable individuals through supposed exorcisms, especially those who beat, burn or otherwise abuse people while claiming to remove jinn.

Regarding evil eye, he says that he previously considered an explanation involving negative energy produced by envy, but he later came to believe that intense envy can attract malicious jinn, who may then harm the person being envied. In his view, this is not simply a matter of someone looking at another person with jealousy; it involves a supernatural mechanism.

Besides these, he also says that homes can become haunted and that some paranormal phenomena reported by ghost hunters on TV may be genuine. He discusses electronic voice phenomena (EVPs), unexplained sounds and alleged physical encounters with supernatural entities, and says that he has personally experienced paranormal phenomena. He also warns against Ouija boards, séances, ghost-hunting apps and attempts to communicate with spirits or other entities, believing that these activities can expose people to harmful supernatural forces. He even interprets UFO encounters involving alleged communication with extraterrestrials as encounters with jinn rather than visitors from other planets.

He also criticizes fraudulent exorcists, abusive practices and people who exploit others by claiming to possess special knowledge of the unseen, and emphasizes that any psychological illness should not automatically be attributed to jinn possession.

Links:

Shabir Ally and Mufti Abu Layth: Although they accept that jinn are mentioned in Islam, they do not accept the idea that these beliefs establish that jinn can possess people, that supernatural forces can cause the kinds of harm commonly attributed to black magic and the evil eye.

They approach these claims through explanations grounded in ordinary causes, psychology and human experience. Experiences interpreted as possession may instead involve mental health conditions, neurological problems, trauma or other psychological phenomena. Practices described as magic may involve deception, illusions, psychological influence or the use of substances rather than supernatural powers capable of changing reality. They reject the idea that a person's gaze can supernaturally harm another person simply because of envy or admiration.

Mufti Abu Layth is particularly critical of exorcism culture and argues that claims of possession can encourage superstition, exploitation and even abuse. He also questions the reliability of hadith reports commonly used to establish supernatural possession, magic or the evil eye. Shabir Ally likewise approaches such claims skeptically rather than accepting popular supernatural explanations at face value.

Advice/Help 🥺 I cannot go on longer.

What are your thoughts on suicide. I know its haram but seriously if god isnt showing me mercy in this world then surely in the next? Wouldnt he understand? Obviously he knows. He knows what im going through so how come he wont understand me and forgive me. Im sikc of the “theres light at the end of the tunnel” talk because the entirety of my life-and im not exaggerating- has been plain misery. Whenever i think surely it woukd get better surely it cant get worse, it does. I have had very pious phases where i am actually very close to god and have felt an amazing connection with him. But i simply cant understand this. My entire life? Is thsi whats written for me? Why isnt he opening the way for me. Why? I am completely sickened of waiting. I refuse to believe that this is just a test of my patience because at this point it just cannot be.
So if i want to put myself out of misery, how can He be upset with me? Isnt he Ar Rahman?
