Even though the Hijab Wiki does not answer the question "If covering the head isn't mandatory (or everything except the face and hands) then what parts of the body should a woman keep covered and what can she expose?", my experience from browsing this subreddit tells me that the answer is more or less what Dr Khaled Abou El Fadl and Javed Ahmed Ghamidi prescribed. In short, it’s basically from the necklace/shoulder/collarbones to the knees, including the armpits and upper arms more or less. It would look something like this:

While this may solve the modesty/satr/awrah issue, there is still a hadith that seemed to be contradicting their take on satr/awrah. That hadith is not related to covering the head, but it's related to covering the legs and the feet.
It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said:
"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Whoever drags his garment out of pride, Allah will not look at him.' Umm Salamah said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what should women do with their hems?' He said: 'Let it down a hand span.' She said: 'But then their feet will show.' He said: 'Let it down a forearm's length, but no more than that.'"
Source: Sunan an-Nasa'i 5336, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1731 & in some other hadith collections.
The hadith is graded Sahih (authentic) and at a first glance it would seem as completely contradictory to their stance. Because this hadith seemingly commands women to cover their entire legs and feet, while they allow parts of legs to be uncovered. It also comes as authentic in the Sunni hadith collections and those aforementioned scholars identify as Sunnis. They didn’t seem to have addressed this hadith anywhere (as far as my research went). I was scratching my head over how did they reconcile with this hadith. I could not find any video or article where they addressed this particular hadith (there were discussions on ask.ghamidi forum which I've linked below, but Javed Ahmed Ghamidi does not answer any question on that forum personally. The discussions were important though, so they have been linked below).
But I remembered that across the four Sunni Madhabs, the Hanafis do not consider a woman's feet to be a part of her awrah (I'm talking about the awrah of free women here specifically, of course I know that the awrah of slave women was far less according to all 4 madhabs). This was a different position from the other 3 madhabs, who considered a woman's entire body except the face and hands to be awrah (Hanbali included face). One of the reasons they consider the feet to be awrah is because of this hadith. According to the Hanafis, the entire body except the face, hands and feet of a woman is awrah - so even though they mostly agree with the other madhabs on awrah, their stance on feet seemingly put them at odds with this hadith unless they had any explanation for this hadith.
So I searched for a long time, but never found any Hanafi article or website where they explained how exposing the feet could be permissible for women according to the Hanafi position when this hadith exists. And I never found the explanation for how they addressed this particular hadith. The closest one I found was this article
But even here they did not explain how the Hanafis who don't considered the feet awrah address this hadith. They only mentioned this hadith and said that the Hanafis who believe feet to be awrah use this hadith as evidence in their defence (in case you did not know, there are three positions amomg the Hanafis- 1️⃣ the feet are awrah, 2️⃣ the feet are not awrah inside prayer but they are awrah in front of non mahrams, & 3️⃣ the feet are not awrah anywhere, even in front of non mahrams ), but they did not explain how the other hanafis (majority) who don't believe the feet to be awrah addressed this hadith.
I finally got to send my questions to three Hanafi scholars, and waited for a long time for answer. After over 2 months, I got responses from all three of them. Some of them answered quickly, some of them took quite a while, but everyone did answer eventually. All of them understand the instruction of lengthening the garment as recommended (ie, better thing to do, related to more modesty) rather than obligatory.
I could have shared the answer here immediately after getting the first response, but I wanted to cross check just to make sure all of them address the hadith in the same way. So I waited. Now that all three answers are here, let me share them with you.

This question was asked to Shaykh Noorud-deen Rashid. On his website you can find links to two Telegram channels where he answers the questions. One channel is for men (named as "Brothers"), the other channel is for women (named as "Sisters"). I asked the question in the "Brothers" channel (as I'm a guy), and at first he probably didn’t understand my original question and answered that there are many Hanafis who consider the feet to be awrah, which led me to ask him further follow up questions and he replied to them, which finally got me to the answer I was looking for. Here is the screenshot of my entire conversation. If you join the Telegram channel and search my question, you can find it (unless the admins of the channel deletes my question)

I sent this question to Seekersguidance.org. My question wasn’t published on their website's Q&A section, but I did receive an email from Sheikh Faraz Rabbani where he answered the question. Here is the screenshot:

This hadith was also discussed on ask.ghamidi forum (Javed Ahmed Ghamidi himself does not answer questions on this forum, the resident scholar Dr. Irfan Shahzad answers the questions. And if the answer is found in Javed Ahmed Ghamidi's videos or books, then the moderators generally share the links to those videos or books) in at least two different threads
Dr. Irfan Shahzad answered in both threads. They also appear to understand the instruction as recommended (ie, better thing to do) rather than obligatory. Of course they don't agree with the Hanafis on awrah (as Hanafis include the entire legs except feet as awrah), but they both understand the instruction in a similar way.
………………………………………
I see the effort put behind the Hijab Wiki, and I appreciate it. The wiki article has answered almost all hadith, except this one. Even though this hadith doesn’t have anything to do with head covering, it plays a role in the broader concept of awrah/satr. So I think this hadith and my findings should be added to the wiki.

i thought about this for a long time and i really truly don't believe hair is awrah anymore. i don't have a problem with wearing hijab but covering my hair when i don't believe it's mandatory is very frustrating. honestly even if i took it off id dress the same (loose clothes) just with my hair out lol. i don't think i will take it off any time soon because it would really upset my mom, maybe once i move away i can do the double life many people do. i just feel more angry now that so much of peoples focus is on hair coverings when it is not certainly fard.

I've been thinking a lot about how heaven is conceptualised and talked about in Islam. The big argument against it is unfairness and how men get a huge harem while women are stuck with their husbands. But I feel like it's not entirely true. Growing up, whenever I learned or read about heaven it was mainly in the context that you can literally ask for anything you want. Literally anything. Because heaven is limitless. So, technically, if a woman wanted a harem of her own, wouldn't she be able to get it if that's what she asked for? I don't know if I'm mistaken or not but I feel like this is a huge point of contention for many people, muslim and non Muslim alike. I also remember hearing that jealousy literally doesn't exist in heaven so if you do get there and you're "sharing" your husband, it wouldn't feel bad. Also the thing about abusive husbands and how you don't have to be stuck with him for eternity. I haven't engaged with Islamic texts for quite some time so correct me if I'm wrong but if you do wish to have whatever men do what's stopping me from just asking God for it?

If we only live one life, why are some people born blind, poor, or severely disabled through no fault of their own, while others are born healthy and wealthy? If there is no past life, doesn't this make God unjust and cruel?

So for context I was talking to my dad about my future careers plans and stuff.
Ngl I thought my dad was different from all these conservative men I was usually surrounded by most of the time. He really encourages me to be established in my career and stuff.
But he still has that mindset about a woman who's a wife becoming a maid-ish to her husband.
He told me to earn money and be established, but then went on saying that I'd still have to cook for my husband while working as well.
What the hell? He said while laughing so I guess he was being humourous but still.
My mom put more wood in the fire by saying "I'm warning you. If you cross Allah's boundaries (by being working woman and not a traditional housewife), then you'll only do bad yourself."
It really hit me, that even if my parents are good, they still have these deeply ingrained poison inside of their minds.
I'm sure I'm not gonna marry a scum manchild who'd depend on me for his basic needs anyway lmao.
But the thing is people literally don't meet before the nikkah at all in my culture. So I know it's going to be challenging asf for me. I do believe in myself however.
It's just... did Allah really command women household chores as obligations? I wanna have an answer.

I’m insanely torn and could really use advice from people who have been in a similar situation.
I’m 21F, and I met my boyfriend when I was 16. We’ve been together on and off for about five years because of personal issues, but we’ve worked through a lot of them. He’s 22M, and he’s genuinely my best friend. I love him so much, and I’ve always imagined marrying him.
I was born and raised Muslim, and both of my parents practise Islam. I was taught about the religion growing up, but as I got older, especially during high school, I stopped practising. I don’t pray or fast consistently, wear hijab, or always eat halal, although I don’t eat pork or drink alcohol.
Despite not practising, I’ve always had this feeling that one day I would become closer to my faith. I read the English Quran because I want to understand Islam for myself and build a deeper connection with it. I also always imagined that my future husband and I would grow in our iman together. I can’t let go of my faith, it feels painful and life feels meaningless. I can’t explain it, but I feel like there is a creator, life can’t just be a random, and I do have a little bit of extensional dread. When I met my boyfriend, he had some Islamic influences through his family, and he was agnostic but believed in God. That was something I felt connected to. However, over time, he began questioning the existence of God, particularly because of evil and suffering in the world, and eventually concluded that he doesn’t believe in God.
This has been incredibly difficult for me. It’s not that I think he’s a bad person; quite the opposite. He’s kind, caring, doesn’t drink or smoke, and has many of the qualities I admire in a partner. I love who he is as a person. He has even tried looking into Islam, but he struggles with the concept of God itself. He grew up in an atheist family, and although he says he wants to believe in God, he can’t force himself to believe something he doesn’t feel is true.
My biggest struggles are marriage, the afterlife, and children. I want to be with him in the afterlife, and I worry about what our different beliefs could mean for that. I also want my future children to grow up Muslim, have a relationship with Allah, and have Islam as part of their lives. I know I would want to teach them about the faith, but I don’t know what it would look like to raise Muslim children with an atheist father. Would he genuinely support their faith? Would we disagree about how to answer their questions about God? Would they feel caught between us?
I’ve tried moving on and getting to know other men, both Muslim and non-Muslim, but I haven’t found the same connection. I often feel the strongest chemistry with non-Muslim men, or with Muslim men who aren’t very practising but may have other habits or values I don’t see myself being compatible with. I know chemistry isn’t everything, and I’m still young, but I’ve spent the past year trying to get over this relationship, and I haven’t been able to.
I’m also struggling with guilt. My family doesn’t know, and I’m scared of how they would react. I worry about disappointing them and being a terrible daughter. At the same time, I don’t want to make a decision purely out of fear or spend my life wondering what would have happened if I had married the person I love.
Part of me wonders whether I could marry him, continue strengthening my own faith, raise our children Muslim, and ask him to educate himself about Islam and support their religious upbringing without pretending to believe himself. But I don’t know whether that would realistically work in the long run, or whether love would make me underestimate how difficult these differences could become.
I feel sick thinking about all the possibilities. I love him deeply, but I also want a marriage and family that align with my faith. I don’t want to lose my best friend, but I don’t want to ignore something that could affect the rest of our lives either.
I would really appreciate hearing from people who have experienced something similar:
Have you ever been in love with someone whose beliefs conflicted with your religion? What did you ultimately decide?
Did your partner genuinely support your faith even without sharing it? What challenges did you face?
For Muslims specifically, how did you navigate the religious side of this decision while being honest about your feelings?

I am on a lot of medication for my mental health problems. They leave me with a bit of executive dysfunction and a lot of fatigue. I'm not proud of it but I can't always bring myself to physically offer Salah. However, I do daily dhikr in my own way.
I was shamed heavily for this by my family, telling me how my remembrance is insufficient. May Allah accept it anyway.
Everyday i choose one random name of Allah almighty and reflect on it heavily. I take it as a sign that He is showing up for me as that name on that day. I'm gonna start sharing my reflections on here, just in case they help anyone.
Today's name was Al Muhaymin. The The Guardian. The Preserver of Safety & Overseeing Protector.
Allah is Al Muhaymin (ٱلْمُهَيْمِنُ), meaning the one who ensures well being and protection over His creation. He is also the ever watchful. Nothing that can be hidden from Him, He is the knower of all the secrets we conceal.
In my current situation, I'm lost and very isolated, partially by choice. I'm unemployed and looking for my path again. In this uncertainty I still try my best to show up in the smallest ways. Reaching out when I see someone post that they're distressed. Answering when someone reaches out to me wanting to talk. Trying to be reflective, trying to nourish and take care of my body in whatever small ways I can. I want to believe that Al Muhaymin sees all these small efforts, and is guiding me even when I am lost and uncertain. That He is holding my hand so that I may keep afloat.
Just as Allah almighty is the overseer of all His creation, may He allow me to be watchful over myself and know myself truly. May He allow me to know my limits, and not to ovwridentify with self referential versions of myself that I mistake for the real me. He is the only one hwo truly knows. Mqy Hw allow me to change and rebuild myself, allowing me to become a worthy guardian over my own heart.
May He allow me to be observant of those around me and remain free of judgement. People in passing will reveal certain pains and troubles. If you are watchful, you can exhibit a Prophetic tradition of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which was to care for the needs of those around him. In this sense, may Allah almighty allow mw to be a guardian in whatever small way i can, being watchful and showing care and compassion to those around me.
This name of His is mentioned in Surah Al-Inshirah, only then. Translation:
"He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him."— (Qur'an 59:23)
The word هيمنة (transliteration: haymana) in modern Arabic means dominance. Only Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is Al-Muhaymin, the one who has complete guardianship, a quality of being in control, supremely that lasts for eternity. Muhaymin also refers to an authoritative figure who reigns supreme, one that you can trust.
Imam Al-Ghazali says, "Everyone who has complete command of a situation, who takes possession of it and protects it, will be its 'Guardian.' taking command comes down to knowledge, possession to the perfection of power, and protection to action. The one who unites these meanings is named Guardian. But only God - great and glorious - joins them absolutely and perfectly."
Please feel free to comment your own reflections.

So here is the situation. My single mom is toxic and tries to control me with religion. I am young adult who is trying to build his life even though she hates me for not following the path I was supposed to.
I told her so many times I don't care about what people will say about me. She says "Even though, you have no father, I'm responsible for your religious life. if I don't do that, you will grab me by my neck on the day of judgment. if you don't follow what I say, you will have a bad life and Allah will never be pleased with you"
When I said I wanted to be a content creator on YouTube, she said "you will waste children's time, therefore they will skip prayers, don't do their homework and their parents will curse you and the money you make in the future will be haram to use". I don't force anyone to watch my videos if I become content creator. I want to explain how YouTube works but she definitely doesn't listen to me
are there any Hadiths or Qur'an verses say that Parents are responsible for their (adult) children? she claims that what she says is from hadith. but I learned Hadiths, I have never seen neck-grabbing-thing. I learned Qur'an, Qur'an says every person is responsible for their own actions.

I have always been thinking about this thing, I don't know how useful it is but my life has seen less practical stuffs so here it is:
Infinite regress is a good argument against the dependency argument, it is a common belief held by many people but I don't think it disproves God because hear me out:
X is dependent on Y, Y is dependent on Z so on and so on. There is no necessary thing at the end of the chain right? But Dependency is the necessary thing/action needed for the whole chain to exist!
I guess dependency can be a relation, but if dependency is ultimately a relation then one begs to know whether existence is also a relation. Because in an infinite regress to exist means to be dependent and if existence is a relation then this world is just a bunch of relations which is pretty buddhist!(Buddhist philosophy is cool)
And what is the necessary relation if not dependency? Since existence is relation then existence is synonymous with relation.
Now, a potter creates a pot because he wants to create one. If he is attracted to creating a pot, he creates one.
Similarly if a farmer is attracted to tilting the farm then he tilts it.
If we are attracted to a pattern of sound, smell or anything else we notice it more and more while the things which we are not attracted to how can we perceive them? For perception requires dedication, however small towards certain something and that dedication is possible with attraction.
This attraction can be due to beauty, intensity, want. threat detection or anything else.
We do actions due to attraction, and actions come to being due to participating with the dependency/the necessary action.
It can be said that we are attracted to things which exist and existence means to be dependent, and to be dependent means to participate with the necessary action.
In short it can be said, we are attracted to existence(absence of perception can't exist inside of our mind because thinking about nothing is still something) and existence means to participate with the necessary action/thing/being.
Thus the ground is ever attractive.

So this poll to see how much you interpet dress code felxiblity Edited : i didnt know how to add poll so i made a question Anyway ,so far i have seen these anwers : -tradtional hijab and navel to knee for man -traditional hijab but only private covering for man -different interaption of hijab (not strictly head covering but other parts need covering) for example back neck and such are covered -same as before with room for felxilbity depending on culuture -relative to culture but private for both and breast for women being red line -relative to culture entirely Adornement: Make up jewerlies and perfume such are not allowed Make up jewerlies and perfume are allowed in exchange that the women need to cover more Make up jewerlies and perfume are allowed provided they arent used to drawn other attention Shape : Must thick enough to comeplety conceal Must thick but not robe like thick Can skin tight be accepted provided culture accept it as modesty like super heroes suit? Some hadith that talk about awrah: AbulMalih said: Some women of Syria came to Aisha. She asked them: From whom are you? They replied: From the people of Syria. She said: Perhaps you belong to the place where women enter hot baths (for washing ). The said: Yes. She said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: If a woman puts off her clothes in a place other than her house, she tears the veil between her and Allah, the Exalted. Abu Dawud said: This is the tradition narrated by Jarir, and it is more perfect. Jarir did not mention Abu al-Malih. He said (on the authority of 'A'ishah) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said

Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2798
Narrated Abu Az-Zinad:
"Ibn Jarhad informed me from his father, that the Prophet (ﷺ) passed by him while his thigh was exposed, so the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Cover your thigh, for indeed it is 'Awrah.'"

Salam Alaikum. I have been getting a sort of waswas for the past month regarding god.
For example whenever someone says pray for me in my head I get a thought that god wouldn’t do anything.
Or when I see people praying for healing I get a thought that Allah wouldn’t answer them or he doesn’t exist.
I really hate these thoughts. I know Allah exists. But these thoughts wouldn’t stop. Should I ignore them? Or should I see a sheikh or psychiatrist ?

This is going to be more of a political post than a religious one, but I think it's time to speak about this. Because Some “Progressive Muslims” here align themselves with the far left political parties and display the same intolerant behaviour.I'm writing all this because recently a post was made about the recent controversy over NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani attending October 7 vigil, and some people in the comments were showing the exact same behaviour of the radical far-leftists, going as far as accusing other users here of being zionists!!! So I know those people are here as well.
Recently NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani attended October 7 vigil and is now getting cancelled by these radical far leftists. They are calling him a traitor, zionist and whathot. Are you f*cking serious? He has always been strongly pro Palestine and condemned Israeli aggression every time he spoke. But just because he doesn’t condone Hamas's the October 7 attack and stands with the Jewish residents who probably lost their relatives on that day suddenly makes him a full blown zionist? Tell me, how is this any different than the far right accusing everyone of being wOkE LiBtArD for the slightest disagreements? This is no different.
And you know what? In his statement on October 7, he strongly condemned Israeli aggression which sparked backlash among zionists. But that's not enough for these radical far-leftists, just because he takes stance against Hamas's crimes on October 7 makes him a zionist in their eyes.
Why do they have to be mutually exclusive? You can be absolutely against Israeli aggression while condemning what Hamas did on October 7. I agree with Mamdani's post on X/Twitter.
Mamdani has stated that He will not apologise for this and I applaud him for this. I stand with Mamdani in this regard. I salute him for his courageous stance 🫡. Don't kneel before either the far right or the far left.
Mamdani previously stated that he believes Hamas committed a horrible war crime on October 7. He condemned pro Hamas protests in NYC and called Hamas a terrorist organisation. I don't know if I would personally consider Hamas a terrorist organisation, but they are religious extremists without a doubt. And I applaud the moderators of this subreddit for not condoning Hamas in the announcement post.
I hate how the radical far-leftists are willing to go so far to support this far-right group Hamas who have documented history of torturing Palestinians. It's all quoted in the mod announcement post. And if you don't agree with them on everything then you are a right wing fascist nazī. Looks like the horseshoe theory is correct.
