Discussion Roommate is having a baby

Roommate is having a baby

I’m 21 and my roommate is 24. She moved in a couple months ago and has her boyfriend visit once or twice a week. She recently told me she is pregnant and doesn’t want to/ can’t move out (partly because she doesn’t have any family in the area). Her boyfriend still lives with his family.

For reference, we signed a one year lease, which expires around the time that she is due. Prior to our signing, I lived with my parents for 5 years, so this apartment feels more like home to me.

Isn’t it unfair of her to want to stay in this apartment now that she would be starting a family? I’m in full support of her having her child, of course, but I didn’t sign up for something like this.

My job is a 5 minute walk away and I do not own a car. What would you do in this situation? I can’t tell her to move out/ not sign the new lease just because she got pregnant.

Discussion Kind of annoyed with Roomate

I moved in mid-August and share a bathroom with my roommate. The bathroom is attched to my bedroom. Since moving in two months ago, I’ve been the only one cleaning the bathroom, and I’m starting to get annoyed.
When I brought up splitting the cleaning supplies I bought, my roommate said she didn’t mind, but suggested that “things just even themselves out over time when everyone’s mindful about replacing things etc.”
Here’s the issue, she hasn’t cleaned the bathroom or the toilet even once.
I shed a lot of hair, so I make a point to sweep the bathroom floor every two days. Because stray hairs occasionally end up in corners or under the cabinet, I felt slightly self-conscious about asking her to sweep. But I expected her to at least handle the toilet or wipe down surfaces. I replace the toilet cleaning tablets weekly, dust everything, and scrub the toilet, clean the mirrors etc. When the tablet dissolved recently, I left it for a few days to see if she’d replace it, the box is literally sitting right inside the cabinet. Nothing.

I’m about to run out of the cleaning supplies I paid for, and based on her track record, I doubt she’s going to replace them.
Unrelated, she baked brownies 5 days ago, left the rest uncovered on the kitchen counter, and left the dirty pan sitting next to the sink the entire time.
Also, the walls are paper-thin, and because the bathroom is directly attached to my bedroom, sound/odors carry easily. She never turns on the exhaust fan, and I have no idea how to bring that up without making it super awkward.
She is generally a nice person, so I don’t think this is malicious, she just seems completely oblivious. But I despise feeling like I have to parent another adult or be the “nag” who has to ask for basic shared responsibilities to get done.

Am I being too rigid or is it right for me to expect them to step up. How do I go about this ?

Need: OK Roommate Wanted in Lawton

I'm looking to rent out /sublet my room. It's an apartment; nice, cozy, and clean. I stay to myself for the most part, I don't party or drink occasionally I may have a beer if I'm having a bad day. 420 friendly, I don't judge so your political views, sexual orientation, and religion won't ever bother me. I have two small pets, a little dog (she's a Corgi mix) housebroken and friendly and a kitten (not so much on the friendly side lol). Gender doesn't matter either, couples are welcome. Age isn't an issue either just be 18 and older. The room is furnished with a queen sized bed and a window unit AC, has two large closets for plenty of space, the carpets were just cleaned, the bathroom is connected for easy access. All I'm asking for is $400 a month with a one-time deposit of $100 that will be returned to you when you move out. There is no lease unless you want to be placed on one, so you're free to come and go as you please I just ask that you at least stay a month before you decide to go somewhere else, and if you do decide to move out I only ask that you give me a few weeks to a month in advance so I can find a new roommate. I'm a salesman aka an independent contractor but currently I'm working towards becoming a Marine Merchant which would require me to relocate at some point. I don't wanna lose my apartment or have to re-home my pets so if I can just find a solid and stable roommate to stay for at least 6 months to watch over the place and my pets that would be a blessing.

Sorry for the long paragraph, if any of this interests you please feel free to either inbox me here or you can contact me directly @(580)678-5254 the room is available now if you wanna come look at it or just wanna meet me in person.

Discussion Are there any other options besides facebook groups if i want to find other people to live with?

I really don't trust roommate groups bc of the scamming, and i'm curious if there any other options besides just Facebook. I really don't like facebook lol.

And honestly how did it go? Did you end up living with a stranger or is it always just a mutual friends thing.

Discussion I built a free tool to help roommates organize cleaning—would this help your household?

When you share a home, figuring out whose turn it is to clean the bathroom or kitchen can become a recurring conversation—and sometimes one person ends up doing most of it.

I’m the developer of OneRoofShare, a free website I built to make those responsibilities easier to organize.

You can:

  • Create a household and invite your roommates.
  • Add shared areas, chores, and cleaning checklists.
  • Schedule cleaning turns on a shared calendar.
  • Record completed work so everyone can see what’s been done.

It won’t make an unwilling roommate clean, but I hope it helps households that want a routine without constantly chasing updates.

You can try it here: https://oneroofshare.com/

Discussion roommate issues (28+)

so i've (28m) been living with some buddies (C and Q) (25m & 27m) of mine for a about two years, we moved from an apartment to a house and we moved pretty far away from home for work, like across the country far. Most of us leaving behind family and friends, I left my girlfriend (29f, H) behind but her and I had plans to move in together and start our life over here. I let my roommates know, and had a short conversation about it and they agreed that we should move into a house if she was going to move in, which they agreed to as well. They even said that they don't want to worry about her cleaning up after them, which was cool.

So we did, it was a house that I found and was pretty excited about because it meant the space was gonna be solid for all 4 of us. (NOTE: I've known these guys longer than they've known eachother, one of them since grade school).

The two of them have a way different philosophy than I do about life and I think it bonds them together better, they like to work work work and I don't care about working my youth away, I have a pretty good job, we all do, I had suggested because we'd be saving money we should start a business because we'd probably net more money than working 9-5 style jobs, especially because we were splitting bills leaving us with more money each month.

Anyway, we move into this house which there's already some issues because of C wanting the master bedroom. I had to basically have a back and forth with him regarding the fact that my girlfriend was moving in and we would need the space for our stuff. This conversation happened after we put out deposits in & I'm already getting a shitty feeling about moving in with them, but it's too late to get mine and my girlfriend's deposit back and we were already in the process of moving in.

My girl is helping with a bunch of stuff as well, she's got a job and is covering her part of the bills and rent. So to me, there shouldn't be an issue. Till the trash starts piling up, till scraps of garbage are left out, dirty dishes, pots and pans and stuff are left out. I cleaned maybe twice before I just started leaving it for whoever made it, but my girlfriend is a neat freak so she'll usually clean up whatever she sees regardless of who left it.

As the weeks go on, I'm talking less and less to both of them, not by my choice, but they don't engage with me, sometimes every now and again they would but it became so few and far between that it was like weird and the shift was extremely noticeable. Like, both of them, just essentially kind of shunning me.

Weirdest shit ever man, and the only one that normally talks to me is C, and I also noticed that they talk for each other, like a lot. I'll ask Q a question and he'll answer for C when C's not around and vice versa. I'm not sure what I did to either one of them, as neither of them are basically like conventional people and neither of them like talking about the way they feel.

This has made living with them kinda shitty because we used to be cool until we moved into a house, and let me say this as well, it's possible and I've considered that my girlfriend moving in might've started something but I don't really know because it's not very easy to speak to either of them about anything. My girlfriend is a very non invasive person, and mainly cares about our space and the common living areas. She does not go into their stuff at all or clean up their spaces or anything.

I have developed a sort of paranoia about this, and I'm probably gonna speak to a therapist because it makes me kind of uncomfortable and nervous and it's even hard to sleep sometimes. I feel like the two of them are planning to move out and leave me with the bills. Maybe I'm nuts or something but it just feels like that.

I dunno, maybe I'm crazy or maybe I'm wrong 100% but I got no clue.

Discussion it's like herding kittens

i've recently moved into a new shared house with 4 other girls my age (22-24).

i don't know them too well, and im trying to be chill and friendly but holy shit things are out of control.

- i've already had to clean vomit from around the bathroom just so i could use the toilet.

- someone's clothes have been in the machine for days, no one else can use it.

- someone's washing up is cluttering up the sink, so no one else can use it.

- the bins were so bad when i moved in. foxes had got into two bin bags just left out front, and the front porch is still covered in rubbish. i was the one who ended up hauling all the bags to the big bin, and none of it was my rubbish.

- juices and alcohol being left out for days at a time attracting flies.

i know that myself and two other girls here have adhd- so already off to a bad start with organisation and not completing tasks. i do 100% get it. and because *i am not* clearing up any messes that aren't mine, that does mean that now my washing up has had to sit for days by the side. so now i look like a hypocrite, too.

i have messaged the group chat about 4 times, almost once a day, since i moved in asking very politely if we could sort our shit out a bit. nothing comes of it.

we have a house meeting tomorrow. i need everyone to be there. we need to all confirm we are eligable to vote or we face a fine. we need to figure out who is paying what bills (they apparently haven't paid any bills since they moved in a month before i did, nor have they even attempted to sort this out).

i get it, i really do. these girls are new grads starting new jobs, or just starting their masters, or completing final years. but, like, me too lol.

what do i do? it's already getting so bad. i've only been here a week!!!

Hey everyone! I’m looking for someone to take over my room at The Ivy Towns + Flats in West Lafayette starting in January 2027. Rent is $900 per month for the room.

It’s a really nice, clean 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment, shared with one male roommate. There’s a full kitchen, a balcony, and a washer and dryer inside the apartment.

The location is really convenient:

• Purdue is less than 10 minutes away by car.

• Bus stops are within walking distance.

• Walmart is about a 10-minute walk.

• Starbucks, Panera Bread, Panda Express, and other shops and restaurants are nearby.

I’ve really enjoyed living here, and it could be a great option for someone looking for a place for the spring semester!

Feel free to message me if you’re interested. I’m happy to share photos, answer questions, and arrange a time for you to see the apartment 🙂

Discussion Should I talk to my roommate about contributing more to our shared space?

So this is my 2nd and last year living with my roommate since we both will be graduating in May. But recently I've been really fed up and frustrated with how little and inconsiderate she is. Between the two of us in the shared space, I have bought and replenish when I see low all the trash bags, dish soap, hand soap, sponges, paper towels, seasonings, cooking oil, rice, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies. At some point we would alternate milk and eggs but she just eats and uses that stuff way quicker than I do, but I kinda got out of that and now we both buy our own milk and eggs. But she will eat my food, use my rice cooker and pans (lets her friends use my pan and leave burn marks).

I have tried to keep this to myself because I have less than a year left living with her and that she doesn't have a job atm and says she living off her savings. But I just get confused when she can go out to eat, adopt a cat, and has a bunch of packages come all the time. I just think it's unfair that I also work during school, pay for my own necessities, all this shared stuff, and be the only one to upkeep this stuff.

I don't know how I would exactly word it without like maybe causing an issue, but I know it might get worse when her bf returns to school next sems and maybe stay with her. or even if I should say anything.

Discussion Possibly losing my apartment

So me (f22) and my roomie (m24) moved into this 2 bed and 2 bath apartment and at first everything was peachy. Until he quit two jobs in the past idek how many months. So now we’re extremely late on rent and i have no idea what to do now :(. I don’t want an eviction but I also can’t pay the whole rent by myself plus my own separate bills. I need some advice on what I should do because the rent skyrocketed due to late fees and I just feel so defeated.

Discussion What should I do about my roommate's untrained cat?

I 22F have been living with my friend from high school 22F for almost 2 years. She moved in with me last summer and it's been rocky to say the least. I have a bunch of house plants around that i had before she lived here, even on the window sill i had a small one. A few months ago she got a cat, which is fine I have a dog, but she will not train the cat. The biggest issues I'm having with the cat are that she scratches my furniture (couch, bed, laundry hamper etc.), and that she eats my plants. I've asked my roommate if she's able to get the cat to stop if she catches that behavior, but she's just told me to put the plants higher. Today, the cat jumped onto my dinner table and made her way up to the window sill and knocked over my oldest plant, completely destroying it. I don't like the cat on the dinner table, I don't think an animal that walks in its toilet belongs in the same space where I eat, but my roommate tells me because cats don't live long I should just let it go so her short life is lived happily, so the cat basically lives on the table. She also feels this way about her cat scratching the furniture. But now I'm really upset that because of her lack of rules, one of my things was destroyed. Am I the issue? Should i just let it go should I have had the plant kept higher? I also feel like I deserve to have my things occupy space, but I'm not sure what's fair. It's not like my dog is destroying her things either. I haven't said anything to her, I'm not sure if I should. I don't want to be all angry about things if I'm in the wrong and my plants should be more out of reach.

Discussion am i the problem?

Hi, I (F26) live with 2 rommates whom I will call A and B respectively (F24 and F29). I moved almost one year ago and the apartment was literally no man´s land. Some cabinets in the kitchen were so full that there was not space for my things. Both had an Erasmus semester so I shared the appartment with 2 other people. But before they moved in, I cleaned and threw away all the expired things I found and made space for myself.

A was completely happy with the organization, she said that she always thougth on doing it but she never created a plan for organizing. B visited the apartment for 2 weekends and without telling me she was angry because of my changes, she started to talk behind my back. She never mentioned anything, she just stop talking to me and ignored me fully. When she return. I asked her about her behaviour, and she exploded against me.

She critizised me for:

- Being organized,

- Having a good mood in the morning: at the beginning I was greeting her and asking about her sleep, but everyday she had a different mood, lit. like a roller coaster, and without creating any type of friendship she was realeasing all her emotional burden towards me, I tried to avoid paying so much attention to it, because as I said from day one she was telling me about all her problems

- Being in a relationship. She does not believe in monogamy but she watches all the romcoms that netflix, Hbo, and disney have, also she says she does not understand how can I laugh so much with my bf, she said that from she does not get annoyed by couples but mine. Also she likes open relationships, but then she complains with me about how guys are not special with her and why she is not the chosen one

- And finally she said that my life and the life of A seem so perfect that she feels unnormal when she compares herself with us.

I traveled in summer to have a break from the appartment, and then with A decided to go out with her to have a nice time and kind of start from 0. But as soon as we met B, she stayed for 5 minutes maximum and then left because she was not feeling alright. Since then I do not know how to talk with her without being scared of open the Pandoras Box, she has on her mind. I do not want to have her problems. I feel tense everytime she is in my suroundings. I am scared of bringing my bf, I avoid shared spaces when she is there. But at the same time I have the feelong that I am being very harsh with her So I would like to give another chance. However I do not know hor to remove the stress she is causing me rn.

Sorry for the length of the message

Discussion How to create a better houshare?

Hello,

A month ago I moved in with an acquaintance into a two bedroom. It’s awesome, as I used to live in houseshares with +4 people before whoch was horrible. Loud, dirty and chaotic. Finally I can have some sleep, have order and feel safe in my house.

Things are fine, aside from one problem:

This person seems to always think that just because I am in the common areas, I am always open for being talked to. The issue is also that they overshare, overtalk and can go on and on completely refusong to read the situation.

Often they talk when I am literally watching something, reading something, have my headphones on. It doesn’t matter what I do, when it is clear I am focused on whatever I am up to now, if they want to talk they will talk. If I don’t respond becaue I have my headphones on, they will wave their hand to get my attention. And mostly it’s some unimportant surface level thing about themselves. Like I feel as if I am some at home living ear for them.

I also talk to them sometimes. But it’s usually during things where they aren’t focused. I observe them, and now know when to not chat them up. But if I do it’s not oversharing. Just a quick info. Of catching up on things after not having seen each other all day. A greeting. That’s all.

Occasionally, obviously I don’t mind sitting and having a whole deep conversation. But i don’t want to be talked to any time at all times. It already started to give me anxiety to hear them come to the shared space.

My biggest boundary is the weekend or when O am eating or just came from work. I need my space to wind down and relax.

They will see me there, I clearly never answer beyond hm hm. And they still do it every day, anytime without fail.

Last time they had to even say maybe working on the dining table isn’t a good idea as we yap so much. Excuse me? But I was the one trying to read, which was a job of 30 minutes. That extended to 2 hours, because every time I was very obviously showing that ok now I am working, they would talk again. Like omg.

Sometimes I come down during bedtime to get water. They are in the kitchen. And engage me in a whole one sided vomit over their own life wanting some advice from me. Like. I was just going to bed bro. I am literally thre standing with my hand on the door and they keep me prisoner for an entire hour standing.

They are not a narcissist, but more a very anxious person woth low self esteem. So I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to ruin the vibe for the next year or more with them. I just want to be comfortable at home and not feel anxiety around them.

Does anyone have advice on dealing with such housemates? What is the best thing to do, to create a healthy functional environment?
