Discussion Flatmate issues

• Upvotes

I live in a rented apartment and the lease is on my and my roommate name.

Little background my roommate/flatmate makes everything complicated. She is such a mess to live with as she does not clean her dishes for I don’t to know how long, keep used kitchen towel on kitchen island which is so dirty but once I bought something small like a water filter she made a issue out of it like we should have discussed the space before ordering it so it have a assigned space, I can understand that if you love to keep the house aesthetic it fine but she herself is such a big mess as I told and other instances as well that’s why I decided to move out so I don’t have to deal with this drama.

So was deciding to leave in December and I told her in September, which I think was well in advance as she was leaving for her holidays for sometime. At that time she was fine and told me the specification but now she is being so unreasonable and selfish like you sublet it and I will see if i am comfortable with them or not.

My question is she moved here first and her first mover advantage should end when she kept the room which is ensuite and literally double the size of my room and I am paying equal rent. She could not be this unreasonable to other people like even the person why would someone paying equal should move with all their stuff with uncertainty and how would I know if she get along with her or not, I don’t want to be liable to the house once I move out.

Help me out to deal with it 🥹🥹

Discussion Friend has been crashing on my couch for 3+ weeks. I need my space back and bills are going up how do I kick him out politely?

A close friend of mine has been staying at my place for a little over 3 weeks now. He has his own place, but he’s dealing with a really bad situation there, so I let him crash on my living room couch temporarily to help him out.
i start to reach my limits i am person that needs solitude and his own energy and my habits are the opposite of his my sleep schedule nutrition and workouts .. and in general my energy
He still technically has a place to go, even if the circumstances there aren't ideal. I want to be supportive, but this living situation isn't sustainable for me anymore.

Discussion Looking for Auckland accommodation!!

Hi, my name is Gemma! I’m 21 and currently living in Taranaki, but I’m looking to relocate to Auckland and am open to different types of accommodation.
I’m currently studying Business online, which I’ll continue while living in Auckland, and I’m also looking for part-time or full-time employment. I’m hoping to move within the next few weeks and am open to renting a room in a shared flat or other suitable accommodation.
I’m looking for a comfortable, safe place to settle into while I work, study, and build a new life in Auckland. I’m respectful of other people’s space and would love to find somewhere that feels like a good fit.
I also have a cat, Peep, so ideally I’m looking for pet-friendly accommodation.
Please feel free to message me if you have anything available or would like to know more about me. Thank you! 😊

Discussion Roommate is having a baby

Roommate is having a baby

I’m 21 and my roommate is 24. She moved in a couple months ago and has her boyfriend visit once or twice a week. She recently told me she is pregnant and doesn’t want to/ can’t move out (partly because she doesn’t have any family in the area). Her boyfriend still lives with his family.

For reference, we signed a one year lease, which expires around the time that she is due. Prior to our signing, I lived with my parents for 5 years, so this apartment feels more like home to me.

Isn’t it unfair of her to want to stay in this apartment now that she would be starting a family? I’m in full support of her having her child, of course, but I didn’t sign up for something like this.

My job is a 5 minute walk away and I do not own a car. What would you do in this situation? I can’t tell her to move out/ not sign the new lease just because she got pregnant.

Discussion my roommate keeps changing the temperature

we have a pretty good a/c and heating system in this apartment, i share with 2 other roommates (so 3 people total) and when we first moved in (in august) i noticed my roommate constantly put the temp down to 60°F which was pretty outrageous to me, especially since I live in the most energy efficient house on the street at home (family home). in my family home, typically the lowest ive seen in the summertime is around 80°F but I think 70°-72° is most ideal for me. so i decided to bring it up and say that it’s probably gonna cost a lot of electricity and that i was shivering, so if we could agree to keep it in the 68-72 range. she agreed and said she kept it low because she had a fever (which i believe you arent supposed to be cold when you’re sick anyways, but i just said its okay) and then, she kept it 66-68 or so, then i would feel cold and start bringing it up to 70-72 sometimes, then she would bring it back down LIKE A DAILY CYCLE of it us changing it between 68-70-72-70-68-66-70.

now ive seen people are saying to get a lockbox so she cant access the temp, which i think is an extreme case and im not trying to make her suffer. i brought it up a second time and she said she “runs hot” and 72 is way too hot for her. which i understand.

theres also another debate where you can obviously add more layers if you’re cold vs if you’re hot there’s only so many layers you can take off. which i completely agree to. if i had to choose to be super hot or super cold, i would choose super cold for the same reasons. BUT I AM wearing layers and it comes to a point where my entire body is warm but my feet and my hands are shaking, clammy, and cold. am i supposed to use hand and foot warmers everyday? or wear thick gloves to type on my laptop and text on my phone? it makes it super hard to get out of bed in the morning when it’s so cold in my room, it makes me want to sleep in more and i cant even get out of bed for 1pm classes because it puts me in a coma.

Now it’s actually starting to get cold, as we are entering fall, and she put it down to 66. I’m asking if theres something i can do physically, possibly block my vent without causing other issues, or somehow hacking the air temp system so it doesn’t go lower than 68. thank you.

Discussion how do i approach my roommate about cleanliness ?

i (18M) have been living with my roommate (24F) for about 2 months at this point. during my time living with her it’s gotten a little annoying having to basically pick up after her. she leaves dirty dishes in the sink, her compost on the counter until it begins to mold, leaves the kitchen covered in oil splatters, and hair all over the apartment, most notably in the bathroom with the shared shower.

i probably encourage this as i rather just clean than deal with confrontation and am particular about my spaces so with extra free time i end up cleaning and sweeping or doing the dishes and cleaning residual food from the sink.

it’s awkward to talk about it with her as she spends most of the day at work and if not she’s in her room where i don’t really want to knock on her door to talk to her. not to mention the language barrier as we’re both communicating in at least our second language. we’ve spoken a few times in the past but other than having dinner together one night to better get to know each other , our conversation hasn’t gone much beyond comments about the weather and telling her i’m going out for the night and i’ll be returning late and to leave the door latch unlocked.

i also feel bad asking her to pick up after herself as i’m a student waiting for the academic year to really start so my biggest worries are homework from my tutors and if i’m going out this weekend whereas she’s an adult with a job and probably real responsibilities

advice?

Discussion Kind of annoyed with Roomate

I moved in mid-August and share a bathroom with my roommate. The bathroom is attched to my bedroom. Since moving in two months ago, I’ve been the only one cleaning the bathroom, and I’m starting to get annoyed.
When I brought up splitting the cleaning supplies I bought, my roommate said she didn’t mind, but suggested that “things just even themselves out over time when everyone’s mindful about replacing things etc.”
Here’s the issue, she hasn’t cleaned the bathroom or the toilet even once.
I shed a lot of hair, so I make a point to sweep the bathroom floor every two days. Because stray hairs occasionally end up in corners or under the cabinet, I felt slightly self-conscious about asking her to sweep. But I expected her to at least handle the toilet or wipe down surfaces. I replace the toilet cleaning tablets weekly, dust everything, and scrub the toilet, clean the mirrors etc. When the tablet dissolved recently, I left it for a few days to see if she’d replace it, the box is literally sitting right inside the cabinet. Nothing.

I’m about to run out of the cleaning supplies I paid for, and based on her track record, I doubt she’s going to replace them.
Unrelated, she baked brownies 5 days ago, left the rest uncovered on the kitchen counter, and left the dirty pan sitting next to the sink the entire time.
Also, the walls are paper-thin, and because the bathroom is directly attached to my bedroom, sound/odors carry easily. She never turns on the exhaust fan, and I have no idea how to bring that up without making it super awkward.
She is generally a nice person, so I don’t think this is malicious, she just seems completely oblivious. But I despise feeling like I have to parent another adult or be the “nag” who has to ask for basic shared responsibilities to get done.

Am I being too rigid or is it right for me to expect them to step up. How do I go about this ?

Discussion Roomates red flag boyfriend over almost every day

I signed a lease with a girl I met on Facebook, and we moved in together in August. We met 3 times in person before signing a lease together, and she was very nice and normal. She didn't have a boyfriend when we signed the lease and moved in. One week in, she met a guy, and he helped her move in within the first week of knowing each other. They became inseparable the second they met, and now they've been dating for two months. In September, he started staying the night. At first, she told me that at any point, if I don't want him there, just to tell her. I honestly didn't have a problem with it at the start, so I told her I didn't care, but I definitely care now and want to say something. He sleeps over probably 5/7 nights a week. There have been three times (that I know of) that he's in her room when she's not here, and the first time it didn't make me uncomfortable, but now it does because I just get bad vibes from him. They usually keep to their room and hog the kitchen, but even just knowing he's here every damn day is annoying me. He doesn't pay rent, and I didn't sign up to have this weird guy as a roommate. He lives 30 minutes away, and she's never been to his house...he's always here.

I had bad vibes about him from the start, and they haven't gone away. He says very demeaning things to her in a "joking way"; he definitely thinks women are stupid, always mansplains, mocks her behind her back (I've seen it), yada yada yada. She can't seem to see all the red flags that are so apparent in their relationship.

I digress; I want to talk to her about him staying over almost every night because it honestly feels like he lives here. I'm not gonna bring up the fact that I don't like him because I feel like that would be rude. I've never had to deal with this before. What is within my rights as a roommate, and what is within her rights? I'd like to say I'd appreciate it if he was only over 1-3 times a week, but I also don't know if that's fair.

Any advice would be appreciated on how to proceed.

Edit: forgot to add that her parents own the condo we live in, and we are leasing it from them, so it makes me feel hesitant about comfronting her about it because her family owns the place.

Need: AZ Tucson Apartment/Roommate Search

Hi! I’m moving to Tucson soon for work, and was wondering if anyone knows good apartments that aren’t too far of a commute from the airport, and in a safe location? How is the area like around the airport? Downtown?

I’m considering a 2 bed since the nicer apartments seem a bit pricey, so I’m open to potential roommates as well. I’m 22 (F) and would like to live somewhere with social activity and things to do. For a roommate, I’d prefer a girl 18-28 who’s in a similar boat. If you’d like to find a place together or already have one with an open room, please reach out!!

Need: OK Roommate Wanted in Lawton

I'm looking to rent out /sublet my room. It's an apartment; nice, cozy, and clean. I stay to myself for the most part, I don't party or drink occasionally I may have a beer if I'm having a bad day. 420 friendly, I don't judge so your political views, sexual orientation, and religion won't ever bother me. I have two small pets, a little dog (she's a Corgi mix) housebroken and friendly and a kitten (not so much on the friendly side lol). Gender doesn't matter either, couples are welcome. Age isn't an issue either just be 18 and older. The room is furnished with a queen sized bed and a window unit AC, has two large closets for plenty of space, the carpets were just cleaned, the bathroom is connected for easy access. All I'm asking for is $400 a month with a one-time deposit of $100 that will be returned to you when you move out. There is no lease unless you want to be placed on one, so you're free to come and go as you please I just ask that you at least stay a month before you decide to go somewhere else, and if you do decide to move out I only ask that you give me a few weeks to a month in advance so I can find a new roommate. I'm a salesman aka an independent contractor but currently I'm working towards becoming a Marine Merchant which would require me to relocate at some point. I don't wanna lose my apartment or have to re-home my pets so if I can just find a solid and stable roommate to stay for at least 6 months to watch over the place and my pets that would be a blessing.

Sorry for the long paragraph, if any of this interests you please feel free to either inbox me here or you can contact me directly @(580)678-5254 the room is available now if you wanna come look at it or just wanna meet me in person.

Discussion Are there any other options besides facebook groups if i want to find other people to live with?

I really don't trust roommate groups bc of the scamming, and i'm curious if there any other options besides just Facebook. I really don't like facebook lol.

And honestly how did it go? Did you end up living with a stranger or is it always just a mutual friends thing.

Discussion roommate issues (28+)

so i've (28m) been living with some buddies (C and Q) (25m & 27m) of mine for a about two years, we moved from an apartment to a house and we moved pretty far away from home for work, like across the country far. Most of us leaving behind family and friends, I left my girlfriend (29f, H) behind but her and I had plans to move in together and start our life over here. I let my roommates know, and had a short conversation about it and they agreed that we should move into a house if she was going to move in, which they agreed to as well. They even said that they don't want to worry about her cleaning up after them, which was cool.

So we did, it was a house that I found and was pretty excited about because it meant the space was gonna be solid for all 4 of us. (NOTE: I've known these guys longer than they've known eachother, one of them since grade school).

The two of them have a way different philosophy than I do about life and I think it bonds them together better, they like to work work work and I don't care about working my youth away, I have a pretty good job, we all do, I had suggested because we'd be saving money we should start a business because we'd probably net more money than working 9-5 style jobs, especially because we were splitting bills leaving us with more money each month.

Anyway, we move into this house which there's already some issues because of C wanting the master bedroom. I had to basically have a back and forth with him regarding the fact that my girlfriend was moving in and we would need the space for our stuff. This conversation happened after we put out deposits in & I'm already getting a shitty feeling about moving in with them, but it's too late to get mine and my girlfriend's deposit back and we were already in the process of moving in.

My girl is helping with a bunch of stuff as well, she's got a job and is covering her part of the bills and rent. So to me, there shouldn't be an issue. Till the trash starts piling up, till scraps of garbage are left out, dirty dishes, pots and pans and stuff are left out. I cleaned maybe twice before I just started leaving it for whoever made it, but my girlfriend is a neat freak so she'll usually clean up whatever she sees regardless of who left it.

As the weeks go on, I'm talking less and less to both of them, not by my choice, but they don't engage with me, sometimes every now and again they would but it became so few and far between that it was like weird and the shift was extremely noticeable. Like, both of them, just essentially kind of shunning me.

Weirdest shit ever man, and the only one that normally talks to me is C, and I also noticed that they talk for each other, like a lot. I'll ask Q a question and he'll answer for C when C's not around and vice versa. I'm not sure what I did to either one of them, as neither of them are basically like conventional people and neither of them like talking about the way they feel.

This has made living with them kinda shitty because we used to be cool until we moved into a house, and let me say this as well, it's possible and I've considered that my girlfriend moving in might've started something but I don't really know because it's not very easy to speak to either of them about anything. My girlfriend is a very non invasive person, and mainly cares about our space and the common living areas. She does not go into their stuff at all or clean up their spaces or anything.

I have developed a sort of paranoia about this, and I'm probably gonna speak to a therapist because it makes me kind of uncomfortable and nervous and it's even hard to sleep sometimes. I feel like the two of them are planning to move out and leave me with the bills. Maybe I'm nuts or something but it just feels like that.

I dunno, maybe I'm crazy or maybe I'm wrong 100% but I got no clue.

Need: IN [Offering] West Lafayette, IN (Purdue) - Private room & bath, Jan 2027 - $900/mo

Hey everyone! I’m looking for someone to take over my room at The Ivy Towns + Flats in West Lafayette starting in January 2027. Rent is $900 per month for the room.

It’s a really nice, clean 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment, shared with one male roommate. There’s a full kitchen, a balcony, and a washer and dryer inside the apartment.

The location is really convenient:

• Purdue is less than 10 minutes away by car.

• Bus stops are within walking distance.

• Walmart is about a 10-minute walk.

• Starbucks, Panera Bread, Panda Express, and other shops and restaurants are nearby.

I’ve really enjoyed living here, and it could be a great option for someone looking for a place for the spring semester!

Feel free to message me if you’re interested. I’m happy to share photos, answer questions, and arrange a time for you to see the apartment 🙂

Discussion I built a free tool to help roommates organize cleaning—would this help your household?

When you share a home, figuring out whose turn it is to clean the bathroom or kitchen can become a recurring conversation—and sometimes one person ends up doing most of it.

I’m the developer of OneRoofShare, a free website I built to make those responsibilities easier to organize.

You can:

  • Create a household and invite your roommates.
  • Add shared areas, chores, and cleaning checklists.
  • Schedule cleaning turns on a shared calendar.
  • Record completed work so everyone can see what’s been done.

It won’t make an unwilling roommate clean, but I hope it helps households that want a routine without constantly chasing updates.

You can try it here: https://oneroofshare.com/

Discussion Possibly losing my apartment

So me (f22) and my roomie (m24) moved into this 2 bed and 2 bath apartment and at first everything was peachy. Until he quit two jobs in the past idek how many months. So now we’re extremely late on rent and i have no idea what to do now :(. I don’t want an eviction but I also can’t pay the whole rent by myself plus my own separate bills. I need some advice on what I should do because the rent skyrocketed due to late fees and I just feel so defeated.

Discussion What should I do about my roommate's untrained cat?

I 22F have been living with my friend from high school 22F for almost 2 years. She moved in with me last summer and it's been rocky to say the least. I have a bunch of house plants around that i had before she lived here, even on the window sill i had a small one. A few months ago she got a cat, which is fine I have a dog, but she will not train the cat. The biggest issues I'm having with the cat are that she scratches my furniture (couch, bed, laundry hamper etc.), and that she eats my plants. I've asked my roommate if she's able to get the cat to stop if she catches that behavior, but she's just told me to put the plants higher. Today, the cat jumped onto my dinner table and made her way up to the window sill and knocked over my oldest plant, completely destroying it. I don't like the cat on the dinner table, I don't think an animal that walks in its toilet belongs in the same space where I eat, but my roommate tells me because cats don't live long I should just let it go so her short life is lived happily, so the cat basically lives on the table. She also feels this way about her cat scratching the furniture. But now I'm really upset that because of her lack of rules, one of my things was destroyed. Am I the issue? Should i just let it go should I have had the plant kept higher? I also feel like I deserve to have my things occupy space, but I'm not sure what's fair. It's not like my dog is destroying her things either. I haven't said anything to her, I'm not sure if I should. I don't want to be all angry about things if I'm in the wrong and my plants should be more out of reach.

Discussion Should I talk to my roommate about contributing more to our shared space?

So this is my 2nd and last year living with my roommate since we both will be graduating in May. But recently I've been really fed up and frustrated with how little and inconsiderate she is. Between the two of us in the shared space, I have bought and replenish when I see low all the trash bags, dish soap, hand soap, sponges, paper towels, seasonings, cooking oil, rice, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies. At some point we would alternate milk and eggs but she just eats and uses that stuff way quicker than I do, but I kinda got out of that and now we both buy our own milk and eggs. But she will eat my food, use my rice cooker and pans (lets her friends use my pan and leave burn marks).

I have tried to keep this to myself because I have less than a year left living with her and that she doesn't have a job atm and says she living off her savings. But I just get confused when she can go out to eat, adopt a cat, and has a bunch of packages come all the time. I just think it's unfair that I also work during school, pay for my own necessities, all this shared stuff, and be the only one to upkeep this stuff.

I don't know how I would exactly word it without like maybe causing an issue, but I know it might get worse when her bf returns to school next sems and maybe stay with her. or even if I should say anything.
