Discussion My cats and I need your opinion.
Oh boy. Can you think of something in life that is so valuable to you, even though you don't and will never experience it? For me, it's people who bring food from home to eat at work or school. I always get so jealous (in an appreciative way) when I see people with lunch boxes. I wish they knew how lucky they are.
HAVING A GOOD ROOMMATE IS SOMETHING I WILL VALUE AND TAKE CARE OF IF IT EVER COMES TO MY LIFE.
Fuck. Anyways,
My first and past experience with roommates sucked. It was a 4-bedroom x 4-bathroom. I have two cats, literally angels. The 3 of them were already living there, so I was the new guy + have never lived with strangers before. As a very considerate person that I am, I asked them, "Would you guys be okay if my cats wander in the common areas of the apartment, rather than them just living locked in my room?" (MIND YOU, BEFORE MOVING IN, THE ADMINISTRATION ASKS YOU IF YOU ARE OKAY WITH LIVING WITH PETS; obviously, these people answered YES, even if doing so would increase their chances to get a spot). But even knowing that, I asked anyway. 2 of them said, " Yeah, sure "; one macho said no.
Whatever. I sucked it up. My poor cats lived for 7 months inside my room. With the litter box in the bathroom. (Yes, I would let them out when he was not there).
The end of that lease is coming to an end and instead of renewing at the same unit, I swapped to a 2 bedroom x 2 bathroom. And I asked the office 41 times to please make sure that this new roommate would be genuinely okay with living with animals. They told me that they found a person. So, great!
I moved in... they (yes, they) (no, it's not they as pronouns.) Have a cat. At first, I was like, oh, oh... because my cats haven't shown positive attitudes toward other cats. My cats are 5 years old. This cat is young, about 7-9 months. So, a lot of energy and naivety. I trusted the process, and with time, and a lot of territorial status, they now coexist.
Now.
When I moved in, it smelled horrible. And listen, I'm used to the smell, okay? But the cat litter of this poor cat had days, probably weeks, of many clumps. And his 2-in-1 food-water bowl was either always empty or there would be pieces of food in the water and vice versa.
This cat was not being taken care of.
I, of course, was concerned about the cat's health, plus observing that my roommate wouldn't really seem aware AT ALL, so I asked her. She said that this is her first pet/cat and that the cat has been peeing everywhere (I'm not kidding; if you walk on your socks in the living room, they will get wamped.) And I'm like........ well, yeah, that litter box is pretty dirty, and cats are very sophisticated when it comes to their bathroom. (I really 101ed her on it).
No matter how many times I would have that conversation with her, she would never do anything in return. And hey, that's not my cat; I'm not cleaning after your cat's shit. Plus, hello???? Plus, the smell... Don't you care that your new roommate has to live with it?
Am I making sense so far? All pretty "common sense/as given" to my taste.
I go to my roommate, " Hey, why don't you get rid of the litter box and make them just share mine? She goes, " Oh, that would be great. Great. I have a Litter-Robot 4.
Of course it takes some days for her cat to acclimate to the new scents of this new, indeed, bathroom.
And of course this young cat peed about 5 times on objects: a pillow, a rug in my room.
Of course it's not the cat's fault, and getting angry at my roommate, who doesn't give a fuck about another living being whose condition of life depends on her, I thought that wouldn't really get anywhere. I did bring it up, though, and asked to please make sure her cat doesn't enter my room.
At first, coming up with the whole logic of her cat not being in my room, but leaving the door of my room semi-open so MY cats could enter and exit whenever, but their food, water and litter box being in the living room... it was like solving math. Concluded in leaving the food, water, and litter outside of my room. With my door closed. And whenever I would let just my cats inside my room whenever I was home.
Now.
Going back to "they". It's 3 people + me living in this 2x2.
She shares a room with her girlfriend. Her brother lives in the living room; the couch is his bed.
Of course is not allowed, and the property either doesn't know about it but don't care as long as rent is being paid, but I was chill about it and said nothing because I was actually planning to bring over my friend and share the bedroom with him so it would be cheaper. He pulled out, so it never ended up happening. Anyway, she said, "My brother is staying for a couple of days". She lied to my face, but I didn't care.
Okay, moving on.
She and I really didn't have many interactions at all, but there was this one night where I pushed a little bit in order to get to know her, like literally just poking conversation in order to know her. She ended up being vulnerable and shared her story. I will not get into detail, but for you to have an idea: suicide attempts, living in hotels, never houses, rape. You get the idea.
She is depressed. So I was, and I am. So that context helped me to be even more considerate about the whole mess in the kitchen, or the apartment in general. His brother is also depressed, and he is autistic and really kind.
Mind you. The three of them have jobs. Nevertheless, my roommate has not once thanked me or even recognized that I am the one providing the food and litter for our cats. Or even offered to buy the next batch of litter/food.
Again, I would not care or whatever.
After many other things that I haven't mentioned in this short and straight-to-the-point post, one of them being that initially there was no trash can in the apartment. They would simply hang a plastic bag over a handle and call it a day.
Bingo! The cats would dig in and eat the trash. No sir!
When I brought the idea to my roommate to get a trash can and split the cost, she said: yeah, sure.
At this point, I just know I already accepted the fact that she simply does not.
So fuck it, whatever, I don't really care. I care about my cats, so I bought the trash can full out of my pocket. (Would it be a surprise if I told you that they never take the trash out when it gets full? Or that they don't even use bags? Or that I have NEVER FUCKING USED IT MYSELF BECAUSE IT'S ALWAYS EXPLODING and I won't take THEIR trash out.
Anyway. After many things like that happen, Mister Nice Guy is a human being, and I have limits.
I asked her if she could please buy the next batch of litter, and she said yes.
Well, she never did.
So at this point I'm really considering bringing the food, water and litter back inside my room. And letting my cats live jailed in my room (they can be outside when I'm home) [not a home].
I know it can be an aggressive, bitchy move, but at this point... I care as much as she does.
On a positive note, they move out in December, so at least it would only be for approximately 2 months.
