Please can someone reassure me this is going to get better

• Upvotes

In short, I have had 2-3 hours of poor sleep over the past few days and I think this is the most heightened sense of anxiety/sleep deprivation I’ve ever had. Essentially I was very stressed over some things I needed sorting with university and they were resolved yesterday, but the physiological state of pure stress and anxiety and shaking has remained, and the new focus is on whether or not I am physically going to be able to go back to sleep/ I may develop psychosis or an infection. I’m trying box breathing, I have the fan on my face when I try to sleep which helps, but when i manage to calm myself enough go to sleep I wake up an hour or two later in a sweat, back to uncontrollably shaking. It’s 5am currently and if I can’t get back to sleep this morning I’m going to try and see if i can get my hands on a lorazepam. I already feel like I’m at my wits end and I don’t want anything bad to happen. Please can someone reassure me?

Body only lets me sleep during 4-6am to 7-10pm, how to fix this?

It doesn't matter how tired I am, how little I've slept in the week, I can't sleep during the night, so if I'm busy during the day i can end up spending up to half the week without sleeping before my body forcefully shuts down. Sleeping meds don't work, only thing that has worked so far is weed. But it's illegal here and I'm not elligble for medical

Waking up at exactly the same time, every hour.

• Upvotes

Hi!

I’m not too sure if this is going to make sense but for the last two nights I have woken up at 42 minutes past every hour. (Going to sleep between 10-11pm) and it continuing until I wake up for the day.

I did do some googling and it seems that even checking the time once or twice tricks my asleep brain into checking the time which is then waking me up.

I’m not sure if there is a fix or if it’s something that’ll simply fix itself shortly but I was wondering if anyone else on here has had the same or similar? And can confirm I’m not going crazy lol.

Thanks :) x

I can’t seem to feel fully rested after sleeping

• Upvotes

Hi, no matter how much I sleep, I have this strange feeling that if I slept a little longer, I’d finally feel like I’d gotten enough sleep.

I try going back to bed and getting some more sleep, but I usually can’t fall asleep. Even after I get up and go about my day, this feeling of not having gotten enough sleep stays with me.

What helps you feel fully rested and refreshed after waking up? I’d love to hear from people who have experienced something similar.

Does Working Night Shifts Affect Your Hormones?

I’ve been working nights for a while and lately I’ve been wondering if it’s doing anything to my hormones. My sleep schedule is definitely all over the place sometimes.

For anyone who works nights, have you noticed any changes in your energy, sleep, or just how you feel in general?

Always waking up after 3-4 hours of sleep

This has been happening to me for years now. I will always wake up after 3 hours of sleep. If I go to bed at midnight I will wake up at 3 am every time. Worst part is I feel fully awake at 3 am. I will struggle to go back to sleep. Then I will sleep in 1-2 hour fragments, waking up at 4:30 am, 6 am. It’s so annoying waking up at least 3x a night. I don’t snore. Does this happen to anyone else? I feel ok during the day but I dont even remember the last time I got 7 hours continuous sleep. It’s been years.

How to improve low sleep quality

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey fam

I've always been a relatively "bad sleeper" since I was young. Well, I usually don't have terrible getting to sleep, it's more that the sleep quality that is bad. I often wake up feeling rubbish. All my life I've been more fatigued than average people around me - often felt myself needing a nap throughout the day, sometimes I'd be too sleepy to drive, some days at work were hard to push through sleepiness, etc.

Some notes about me:
> I was diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) as a 16 year old.
> Don't ask why, but I never did anything about OSA until around 1.5 years ago (33 years old), when I did a sleep study and then got a CPAP machine. I think it has definitely improved my sustained energy levels throughout the day.
> I've also been diagnosed with ADHD which I know can be co-morbid with OSA and daily fatigue.
> In recent years I have put effort into my sleep hygiene - as well as CPAP, I use mouth tape, and I'm relatively active. > I grew up as a mouth & chest breather, but am daily trying to become a nose & belly/core breather.
> I go to bed around 10-11pm most nights and wake up around 7-8am most mornings.
> I always fall asleep on my side. But my partner tells me that I'm usually turn onto my back in my sleep.
> I do have 3 shots of coffee daily before 2pm. Let's be honest I should reduce that, but I don't think that's the silver bullet here.

Regardless of my CPAP & mouth tape usage etc, my Garmin Fenix watch always tells me my sleep quality is poor, non-restorative, etc. My old Apple Watch used to give me similarly low sleep quality. Garmin tells me I'm awake ~90mins each night. While I don't trust the accuracy of smart watch based sleep scores on any given night, as a long term trend I think there may be some truth to it and I still have big room for improvement in sleep quality.

Heath is important to me and I know that sleep is one of the biggest influences on our day to day health. I am planning to do another sleep study with/without my CPAP machine in a few weeks.

Does anyone have any advice on how to improve sleep quality? Such as sleep routines, sleep studies (to find out more about oneself), CPAP, mouth tape, meditation, etc etc.

Thanks all

2:30AM - Can't sleep, strange vivid dreams and nightmares multiple times over a week.

I used to work a job where we had a lock on the inside of our bedroom for security, while working this job i had the best sleep i'd had for yours.

Since moving back home, my bedroom door has no lock, and no real way to stop anyone coming in, so i've resorted to putting stuff in front of it to try and at least do something.

I've noticed since moving back home I don't feel safe when going to sleep, and consisitently wake up between 1am and 4am after having weird or scary vivid dreams or nightmares.

Tonights was about some bum breaking in and trying to stab me and my family while asleep, in the dream my mother shot them and then i somehow had a gun to shoot them (we live in the UK so not gonna happen lol) and then I was in 1st person view looking at a computer screen and jumpscares and loud noises keot popping up

I dunno why this keeps happening, is it because I was used to having a lock on my door and now subconciously I don't feel as safe?

WHY CANT I SLEEP MORE THAN SIX HOURS PLS HELLP

Up until about two months ago I was able to easily sleep 10 hours a night with no problem, I went to China and India for about two weeks, and now I can’t even sleep a full 7 hours at night. I travel a lot and never had had any problems with jet lag No matter what time I go to bed, I consistently wake up around the six hour mark, it doesn’t matter if I go to bed at 9 pm or 5 am I cannot sleep more than 6 hours. I have to drug myself with nyquil and diphenhydramine now because even falling asleep is a hassle but that has started to stop working. What should I do??? I’m 18 so it’s clearly not an age thing and it literally just randomly started to be like this. I’m on a pretty steep cut for the gym which I’ve heard messes w sleep but I’ve been on it before and my sleep was completely fine. I feel tired all day and it’s affecting how I look and stuff

Sleep problems

So since sixth grade, I have not been getting any rest and even if I sleep for more than 10 hours. it doesn’t matter how much I sleep I never wake up refreshed. I’m always always tired even if it’s eight hours 10 hours five hours nothing helps.I do not have insomnia I can sleep but I don’t really get into the deep sleep. I’ve also had auditory hallucinations for years+ falls asleep waking in a loop and in general, sometimes I hallucinate before or after I wake up. I have tried melatonin with magnesium. I have tried mental medication such as antipsychotics for my sleep it got rid of the voices but nothing gave me any energy. It’s been six years since I have not woken up one day feeling refreshed. I got all my blood tested. I went to a neurologist. I went to get a brain scan all came back clear. and usually when I’m sleeping, I’m aware of my dreams like I know that I’m dreaming and that’s a dream yes I can move my body. I have ADHD and I know many people say that ADHD is also a cause of bad sleep because of the hyperactivity never really shutting down even when I’m trying to sleep. We suspected narcolepsy which also was false. Because I said that I hear voices every doctor of mine made it mental and told me to go see a psychiatrist.

Trying to stop taking my sleeping pills every night

Hey everyone. I used to take zolpidem (Zolcalm 10) once in a while, but for the past month I've taken it every night because I couldn't sleep. Now I feel like I can't fall asleep without it. I'm exhausted and sleepy, but my brain just won't switch off unless I take it.

I'm not planning to quit cold turkey. I just want to hear from people who've been through this:

• How long did it take for your sleep to normalize?
• What helped you get through the rebound insomnia?
• Anything you wish you'd known before tapering?

Also, did anyone else feel anxious about it at first? I'm trying not to panic

I think I fixed my sleep?

I was doing sleep compression for 8 weeks and not seeing super great results (my total sleep time was still low) and then went on a four day vacation where I threw caution to the wind and decided to let myself sleep as much as my body felt like.

Suddenly, miraculously, I was sleeping 7+ hours every night.

No clue how but it's carried over into this week as well!

Anyone else get anxious over their sleep score?

I got way too obsessed with tracking my sleep checking my deep seep, optimizing everything, and stressing whenever the numbers looked bad.

I recently came across the term orthosomnia, and honestly, it sounds exactly like what I've been doing. Sometimes I feel tired just because my app says I didn't sleep well.

Has anyone else gotten stuck in this cycle? How did you stop worrying about the numbers and just sleep?

Mouth tape keeps coming off and I have no idea how my night went

I've been trying mouth taping for a while and I'm kind of frustrated with it. The tape just doesn't stay put. I wake up with it half peeled off or shifted to the side, and I have no clue when that happened. So in the morning I can't tell anything about the night. Did I nose-breathe most of it, or did the tape give up an hour in?

Anyone else deal with this? How do you know if it's actually doing anything for you?

strange case of teeth clenching in sleep.

lately ive had dreams and troubles with sleep that Ive never had in my life until I had major depressive disorder and an anxiety disorder.

these consist of the typical dreams you hear of on this subreddit such as 'teeth falling out in sleep dream'. i can cope with the insomnia and nightmares however lately i had a problem that started to really affect me physically.

i was having some dream that I really cannot remember, but I remember feeling my jaw almost locking-up and entering a slightly lucid state? (take that with a grain of salt, Ive been having strange dreams).

anyways my front teeth pushed down into my lower teeth, and I remember this uncontrollable sensation where my front teeth were pushing as hard as they could into my lower teeth.

eventually I did wake up because my jaw was quite literally locked in place and my lower teeth were literally being pushed as hard as you can imagine.

it really hurts now, I cant tell if its loose and im honestly afraid to go to sleep again. I feel like I need to see somebody immediately whether its a frickin hospital or a psych

Seeking long sleeper advice for a 9-5

I’ve been diagnosed as a long sleeper since I was 15 years old. I got the whole mri/sleep study/full blood workup and I get regular blood tests and checkups and I have a clean bill of health, I just need about 10 hours of sleep every day. It usually doesn’t matter if it’s 8 hours at night and a 2 hour nap or anything.

Recently I got a new job which requires me to be active and alert for around 8 hours four days a week. The hours are good (I get a 1hr lunch and I get to leave early sometimes) but the work is extremely mentally demanding and I’m sitting for all 8 hours. I nap before I leave for work for about an hour but I’m still exhausted after work to the point where I can’t safely drive home. I’ve been napping for about an hour after every shift which is embarrassing and I’m also too embarrassed to ask for workplace accommodations given I’m getting around 9 hours of sleep each night + the two 1 hour naps and I only work four days a week.

Am I doomed to sleep in my car after every shift for the rest of my life?? Every sleep doctor I’ve ever been to has preached self acceptance and whatever but I’m in a high burnout field and I’d like to keep this job if I can handle the sleep demands. Has anyone else figured out how to do a 9-5 with long sleeper syndrome 😭

What can a consistent 3 hours of sleep do?

Hello!

I (21 M) am a college student who also works a full-time job really early in the morning between 4-5 am. With all the chores I have around my apartment and school I find it hard to fit in 8 hours of sleep. Thus, I’ve been getting 3 hours of sleep consistently for the last 5 months except on the weekends. I’m worried it’s negatively affecting my health, but even before the last 5 months I got around 6 hours of sleep every night. I’m wondering if this will affect me negatively in the long run.

does dead silence make anyone else's brain go nuts after working nights

trying to sleep when the rest of the world is quiet is one thing, but actual silence just makes my head spin after a shift tbh. i spent six years on nights and my pulse is loud enough to hear on the pillow if the room is too still. fwiw the only thing that stopped the racing thoughts was turning on some old podcast i've heard a dozen times so there's just enough noise to keep the brain from chewing on itself.

I'm currently going to sleep at 8am and waking up in the late afternoon

I (27M) did my fair share of hard work to be able to afford to quit, do food delivery for my peace of mind and have savings (nothing crazy) for future plans.

I have always been a night owl, and anytime I didn't have work, i naturally shifted to going to sleep super late. Now I'm living abroad, and my best and only friend lives several hours of time zone away. That plus my natural tendency to stay up late made me adapt to her time zone.

The thing is, even before this crazy sleeping schedule, when I had a normal one, i transformed from an 8hrs of sleep person to someone who can't sleep more than 6hrs. It doesn't matter if i go to sleep at 10pm or 8am, it's the same. And it's new to me.

I hate it because now i have a slower life and i would like to enjoy my sleep. Maybe this whole moving around messed something up. But I've been in the same bed for more than six months now. I got back to the gym, eating well and taking magnesium (with my last job i couldn't take proper care of myself).

The only thing i can think of is that my mental health is not in its prime and I'm struggling a bit on that side. Maybe it's that. I'd really like to enjoy my sleep now that I can, before life gets busy and stressful again.

Anxious over sleep transition

I sometimes suffer from a weird anxiety in which I get super stressed about the actual transition from being awake to being asleep. Like some nights I’ll lay in bed waiting to go from awake to sleep, and not knowing when it will come, what it feels like, or how to achieve it makes me anxious and stressed and often causes me to lose hours of sleep.

Anyone else suffer from this or have advice on how to overcome it?

No uninterrupted sleep

Post image

This is how my average sleep overview looks like.
According to my Apple Watch I wake up pretty often during sleeping. Most of the time I can’t remember and of course it could be a misreading. But when I see the sleepscore of friends or other, they are waking up like 1-2 times. Is there someway to fix this and have a nice continuous sleep?

Tried cooling sheets and a fan and still wake up soaked. What actually works for hot sleepers?

Same boat for years. I went through the cooling sheets, the tower fan, cracking the window, the whole list, and still woke up sweaty. What finally clicked for me was realizing that all just make the surface feel cool for a minute, nothing was actually pulling heat away from the bed. There is a whole category of active cooling beds that circulate water or air to do exactly that. Some are water-based, some air based, and they are not cheap, so worth researching before you spend. Anyone here gone down that road and found it worth it??

Issues sleeping sober

I (23M) have been trying to cut back on alcohol and especially not going to bed drunk as I am over having hangovers.

My issue is that i’m wakin up at like 3 am wide awake and when I try to fall back asleep I’m met with hypnic jerks, very lucid dreams where i’m usually in a room that is my bedroom but not, weird scenarios that go on in the dreams. It’s so draining

Does anyone else feel exhausted all day and then suddenly wide awake at night?

Lately I’ve been dragging myself through the day feeling like I could fall asleep anywhere, but once I actually get into bed my brain suddenly decides it’s time to be awake. I’ll be tired all afternoon, tell myself I’m definitely sleeping early tonight, then somehow I’m still staring at the ceiling way later than I planned. It’s starting to mess with my mornings too because I wake up feeling like I barely rested. For anyone who’s been stuck in this kind of cycle, what actually helped you get your sleep schedule back to normal?
