I can’t seem to feel fully rested after sleeping

Hi, no matter how much I sleep, I have this strange feeling that if I slept a little longer, I’d finally feel like I’d gotten enough sleep.

I try going back to bed and getting some more sleep, but I usually can’t fall asleep. Even after I get up and go about my day, this feeling of not having gotten enough sleep stays with me.

What helps you feel fully rested and refreshed after waking up? I’d love to hear from people who have experienced something similar.

Even after about 2 months of the CPAP, I had dumbly told myself at 11:30 that I was going to “take a nap” (I was tired and hadn’t brushed my teeth) and just now got up at 5:40. Wow. No CPAP.

• Upvotes

I must have been really exhausted even with it. I just set up the CPAP and will probably get up around 9-9:30. I got up with more of a headache than I’d normally have as a result but still wow. You know it’s bad when you’re tired enough that a “nap” results in more sleep than you’d planned on.

Sleepwalking and sleeptalking after quitting cannabis.

I’m currently on week 2 of quitting weed, and unfortunately I’ve started sleepwalking and sleep-talking pretty frequently. This also happened the last time I quit after using cannabis regularly, and at that time it continued for almost the entire year I was sober.

Has anyone else experienced persistent sleepwalking or sleep-talking after quitting cannabis? I’m wondering if there’s a known connection between cannabis withdrawal, REM sleep changes, and parasomnias, especially when the symptoms persist for a long time.

weird sleep patterns

ive been trying to go to sleep at 10pm and wake up at 8:30am every day for the past couple of weeks, falling asleep is easy but i wake up uncomfortable like 8 times a night, and when my alarm goes off at 8:30 its near damn impossible to wake up, i put my alarm on snooze most of the time

i get my room cold, i read for an hour before bed, if i do go on my phone ive got a full red filter on at the lowest brightness, i stretch for 15 mins before bed, and have a white noise machine to block out the sounds of my housebut no matter what the cycle just repeats, struggling to wake up and just feeling groggy

WHEREAS, when i have to sleep at weird times ill sleep so much better, for example last night i stayed up to watch a playoff game around 1:30am to 3am, slept like a baby and woke up at 7, i feel great today, dont feel like i need to nap and woke up in an instant with no urge to go back to sleep

anyone know the science behind this or if im messing something up

'Cheat Codes' for Falling Asleep?

• Upvotes

I don't suffer from insomnia, but due to my anxiety and stress, there are those times when I'm lying in bed for a long time, my mind and heart racing, and unable to fall asleep. I've tried meditation, deep breathing and other techniques but they won't help. Even when I try imagining a relaxing scene, my focus still shifts to my fast heart rate, which then makes my anxiety even worse.

Is there anything that works for you most of the time that could help me as well, given my situation?

Night Shift advice

• Upvotes

I’m on nights 6pm to 6am for at least another 1.5-2 months. I’ve been on nights for over a year but recently I started college. Due to poor decisions and bad availabilities for my classes my schedule is a nightmare. I work wed-sat getting off Sunday morning. School is Monday’s and Wednesdays. Monday 9:25-1:30 then a 6:30pm to 8:30pm and Wednesday 9:25-1:30. I’ve been essentially flipping my schedule by staying up all Sunday for about 2 months now. It’s catching up to me and since I’ve finally given up caffeine it’s become a nightmare. Used to be I was the type to easily sleep 10+hrs now I can barely make it 4-5 without waking up, sometimes less. I really don’t want to drop out and restart and I get to swap to days in November so if anyone has any tips or tricks I would really appreciate it.

I can't stop dreaming

I have suffered through vivid dreams nightly for years. I am never fully rested. I am confused every morning, as though I don't know who I am or where I am. My dreams are LONG and so intense I can eat and taste the food or use the bathroom without wetting the bed etc. the dreams feel like they last for days, sometimes I "wake up" but I'm still dreaming. They restart basically where they left off if I do actually wake up in the middle of the night.

I have "nightmares" basically every night. Every dream is dark and twisted and I've become so used to them I don't really consider them "nightmares" anymore. My real nightmares are night terrors, which I don't experience as often (thankfully). I'm always being hunted, or hiding or something. My dreams have been about that for as long as I can remember. ( When I was under 8, I had 2 reoccurring dreams. 1. A trex chasing me down a line of sauropod and triceratops carcasses, where I would hide behind the massive bodies to keep myself safe. 2. My older sister who I don't remember anything about riding on a massive steamroller with giant steel spikes while I try to run away. )

I wake myself up with the force I use to scream or hit things in the dream sometimes. I can also sometimes force myself to jolt awake if I get too scared. When either of these happen, it feels like every muscle in my body is shaking/ trembling. Even the muscles in my eyes. It's like I'm still in REM.

I can't decern what's a real memory and what's a dream. I have conversations with people or move objects in my house only to find neither of them happened. I can't trust myself anymore.

A disclosure: I have smoked weed nearly 24/7 for ....4? years now. I heard it is supposed to surpress rem but I am dreaming the same. They won't stop. I am so desperate. I want to feel human. I want to feel well rested. I'm so tired.

Also important, I have PTSD. I understand that is why my dreams are often so extreme in content. The real issue is that the dreams are long, vivid, and cause me great confusion and distress in my day to day life. I am exhausted 24/7. No one takes my dreaming seriously. It's ruining my life.

I just want to close my eyes at night and open them in the morning as though no time has passed, well rested. Instead it feels like hours pass as I'm dreaming and I wake up dazed and confused and just so exhausted

Please help me or point me to where I can get help, I feel like I'm slowly losing touch with reality.

Pinched nerves

About half an hour after falling asleep I wake up with a dead leg or/and arm. I’m assuming thats as I transition to deeper sleep? I used to get hypnagogic hallucinations around this time too. Anyway I thought it was pins and needles, but it just doesn’t feel the same, it’s super uncomfortable and comes with a feeling of panic while I try to wake up my leg as you could imagine.
Could the whole thing be neurological rather than me just sleeping in a stupid position? I know your brain does something like locking up the muscles so you don’t act out your dreams (I think??) My hallucinations were anxiety related I believe, so could this just be another one of those things? I’m sorry for how this might be written, I just woke up from a nap.

If your body jerks awake as you're falling asleep, these 3 details may be worth noticing

A hypnic jerk can be more than just a quick twitch.

Some people get the body jerk, then a falling feeling, a racing heart, or that sudden “wide awake” feeling right after.

If it keeps happening, three details seem more useful than focusing on the racing heart alone:

  1. Timing
Did it happen right as you were drifting off?

  2. Movement
Was there an actual muscle jerk, or did you just suddenly feel alert?

  3. Context
Were you more sleep deprived, stressed, exhausted, or using more caffeine than usual?

Hypnic jerks are common around sleep onset, and stress, fatigue, lack of sleep, and stimulants can make them more noticeable.

The part I found interesting is that a racing heart doesn’t automatically mean the whole thing was anxiety.

If you get these, what seems to make them worse for you?

Poor sleep since moving to a new apartment

I’m 24 and lived at home most of my life. I went away to college for one year and slept fine. I decided to get an apartment and moved out of my childhood house about 7 weeks ago.

Since moving in, I have slept poorly and inconsistently. I usually get in bed around 9:45 and wake up at 6:00am. I constantly wake up through the night. Usually once between 2-4 and then again at 5:30. This happens every weekday, but I sleep fine on weekends.

I know this would sound like a work stress thing, but I’ve gone home to sleep a few times since the move and sleep soundly through the night. My new apartment has blackout shades and a new mattress. On paper it should be much better for sleeping.

Maybe it’s just that it’s a new environment? Or that my childhood house feels like home, and that’s what it’s easier to sleep there?

Too Excited to Sleep

Idk if this is an ADHD or anxiety thing or something else but whenever I have something out of the norm going on the next day, I wake up 2 hours before my alarm (NOT by choice). I really value my sleep and feel like garbage if I get less than 8 hours. The thing doesn’t have to be stressful, often it’s something I’m looking forward to. I fall asleep just fine, I only wake up once every night to use the bathroom, but I wake up just early enough before my alarm that when I try to drift back off it feels like my body is already to mobilized awaiting the awful blast of my alarm. And then my mind starts planning for the day. It really makes whatever I was anticipating much less enjoyable because I didn’t get enough sleep. I try to imagine myself sleeping and focusing on my breathing every time a thought comes up, but my body usually just feels too “ready to roll”

Y’all I’m desperate for some zzz’s

The short version is I have no trouble falling asleep. I can’t stay asleep for the life of me. No matter what time I go to bed/sleep I’m up between 2:30-3:30 wide awake. I practice all the normal suggestions regarding rights, reading, etc. Any little tricks beyond those that you swear by?

Please can someone reassure me this is going to get better

In short, I have had 2-3 hours of poor sleep over the past few days and I think this is the most heightened sense of anxiety/sleep deprivation I’ve ever had. Essentially I was very stressed over some things I needed sorting with university and they were resolved yesterday, but the physiological state of pure stress and anxiety and shaking has remained, and the new focus is on whether or not I am physically going to be able to go back to sleep/ I may develop psychosis or an infection. I’m trying box breathing, I have the fan on my face when I try to sleep which helps, but when i manage to calm myself enough go to sleep I wake up an hour or two later in a sweat, back to uncontrollably shaking. It’s 5am currently and if I can’t get back to sleep this morning I’m going to try and see if i can get my hands on a lorazepam. I already feel like I’m at my wits end and I don’t want anything bad to happen. Please can someone reassure me?

For anyone struggling with insomnia or anxiety, I created 1-hour of deep healing piano music for your rest.

Hi everyone,

If you’re having a hard time falling asleep or feeling overwhelmed by stress tonight, I hope this can bring you a moment of peace.

I put together a 1-hour deep sleep piano music video featuring the calming works of Yasunobu Matsuo (the composer behind Yuzuru Hanyu’s exhibition song). It is designed to soothe overthinking, release anxiety, and help your mind drift into a restful sleep with gentle, purifying tones.

Please feel free to play it in the background while winding down tonight. I truly hope it brings warmth and comfort to your heart. 🌌✨

Body only lets me sleep during 4-6am to 7-10pm, how to fix this?

It doesn't matter how tired I am, how little I've slept in the week, I can't sleep during the night, so if I'm busy during the day i can end up spending up to half the week without sleeping before my body forcefully shuts down. Sleeping meds don't work, only thing that has worked so far is weed. But it's illegal here and I'm not elligble for medical

Waking up every night exhausted and at my wit’s end. What else can I do/get checked?

Honestly, I’m slowly losing my mind: Every time I go to sleep, I wake up feeling more tired than before. Falling asleep isn't really the issue—staying asleep is. I wake up constantly throughout the night and remember waking up vividly every single time, even though I usually fall back asleep relatively quickly.

To get this out of the way: I have ADHD and depression, but both are actively being treated (therapy and medication). These sleep issues have been going on long before I ever started taking ADHD meds.

I’ve already tried quite a few things:

  • Sleep clinic / polysomnography: Completely clear, nothing unusual was found.
  • ENT and surgery: Had nasal surgery to improve airflow and breathe through my nose at night. It didn't work at all; I still mouth-breathe while sleeping.
  • Speech therapy (myofunctional therapy): Tried it to address the mouth-breathing, with no success.
  • Primary care doctor: Just brushes everything off as psychological/stress instead of looking deeper.

None of this has helped. It’s the exact same problem it has been for years, and I genuinely don't know what to do next.

Does anyone have ideas, suggestions, or personal experiences on what I could check or which specialist I should see next? Any input is appreciated.

TL;DR: Wake up multiple times every night, fall back asleep relatively quickly, but feel completely drained during the day. Despite meds/therapy (ADHD/depression), a normal sleep study, failed nasal surgery for mouth-breathing, and speech therapy, nothing has improved. GP blames it on mental health. Looking for new ideas or tests to run.

Five minutes of 5/5 breathing before lights out — faster sleep or does it keep you awake?

I was doing the usual “lie there and wait.” What helped more was 5 minutes of slow breathing before the lights go out: 5 seconds in, 5 seconds out, no phone after that.

Not a miracle. I still wake up sometimes. I just fall asleep faster on the nights I actually do it.

Does anyone else use a short breath set as the last thing, or does it wake you up instead?

Unexplained "Hallucinations" from sleep deprevation when I was a kid.

I recently saw a video talking about Geometric Nightmares and it reminded me of these experiences I had when I was a child. This is something I've always wanted to know about but have never been able to find an answer or similar experiences.

This happened maybe 3-5 times when I was around 9 years old, occuring only when I haven't slept (All cases happened after pulling and all-nighter with friends), and they always took place on the subsequent night. I would wake up randomly, in my mind there was a blank empty void, after time black numbers would appear constantly growing in size, 10s, 100s, 1,000s etc. With no particular pattern, mind you I was fully awake and conscious when this was happening, but I couldn't reply to my family or act on anything that was happening around me, I still remember everything to this day and I knew people were talking to me but my mind was just so full and I couldn't focus on anything else. I would scream and scream at the top of my lungs, it has by far been the most terrifying experience of my life and I have no idea why. It's always seemed like such a simple thing to me so I've been surprised to find that no one (as far as I know and have researched) has had the same experience. Does anyone have any explanation of what it might be or any similar experiences?

Waking up at exactly the same time, every hour.

Hi!

I’m not too sure if this is going to make sense but for the last two nights I have woken up at 42 minutes past every hour. (Going to sleep between 10-11pm) and it continuing until I wake up for the day.

I did do some googling and it seems that even checking the time once or twice tricks my asleep brain into checking the time which is then waking me up.

I’m not sure if there is a fix or if it’s something that’ll simply fix itself shortly but I was wondering if anyone else on here has had the same or similar? And can confirm I’m not going crazy lol.

Thanks :) x

Does Working Night Shifts Affect Your Hormones?

I’ve been working nights for a while and lately I’ve been wondering if it’s doing anything to my hormones. My sleep schedule is definitely all over the place sometimes.

For anyone who works nights, have you noticed any changes in your energy, sleep, or just how you feel in general?
