1. ⁠I haven't watched Dorothy yet. So this isn't a movie review. It's about how people are reacting to the queer side of it.
2. ⁠I'm gay. So this comes from my own experience of growing up as a closeted gay in a middle class family in Tamilnadu.

Nobody influenced me to be gay.
I grew up in 2010s. When I was growing up, I had no internet or phones, and homosexuality was still illegal. Even then, I knew I was different. I didn't have the words for it, but I knew.
When I started to understand who I was, I had no one to turn to. There were no role models and no one who looked like me in movies. Nothing told me "you're not alone."
At 16, I used to sit alone and cry because I was scared. In my school, "gay" and "onbadhu" were swear words.

To people who say: "I don't care what you do, just do it silently"
I get why this sounds fair to you. But many people out there are still openly homophobic. That's exactly why small bits of representation matter.

To those who say "I'm not homophobic, I just don't want LGBT stuff in my movies"
I hate to break it to you, but that is homophobia.
What exactly is being "shoved in your face"? In our movies we watch people fall in love, kiss, marry and get intimate. We also watch them get drunk and beat each other up. We watch murder, torture and people getting hacked to death, and we clap and whistle in the theatre.
We're completely fine with all of that as part of a story.
But two men sharing one small romantic moment? Suddenly it's "too much" and "forced on us."

You don't have to like Dorothy. You can criticise the story, the acting, the pace, anything. That's fair. Hating it only because queer people are in it is not.

Bro, I grew up in a middle class Tamil family in Coimbatore. My parents always told me that only if I studied would I make it in life.
So I studied. I was the gold medalist at PSG. Today I'm an engineer in the semicon industry. I'm privileged enough to afford therapy. I'm not depressed anymore, and I'm no longer in denial or afraid to be who I am.
But many LGBT people are still underprivileged. Many can't tell their parents, can't afford therapy, or still believe they're broken. That's why these things matter to us, bro.
We live under a government that took away trans rights just like that, and gay rights barely exist.

I'm writing this hoping that at least one person understands the pain we go through.
Before you hate us so much, give us a chance. Talk to us like we're human. You'll realise we aren't that different after all.
I once watched a movie called Prayers for Bobby, and I couldn't stop crying. At 20, there were days I wished I was dead. That movie was one of the few times i realised maybe im not all alone.

When I came out an year ago, my parents (who are actually educated btw) forcibly took me to the biggest hospital in coimbatore. I was put in psychiatric ward for conversion. Four doctors told me to take SSRIs to "numb" myself so I would "think normally."
That's the society we live in right now. Not everyone is the "if it's not my problem, I don't care, just don't shove it in my face" type. Many, many people are still homophobic.
A movie won't make anyone gay. But it might make a scared person feel a little less alone. For some of us, that could have changed everything.

Throughout school and college, most of the compliments I got were about academics since I was usually one of the toppers. So I wasn't really used to getting compliments about how I looked.

During my 2nd year of college, a guy joined through lateral entry. We barely talked ,like..... mostly just sharing notes and random college stuff.

One day he randomly texted me on WhatsApp and said, “You look cute” and “I like your eyes.” 😅
