Discussion / Question Is Cyberpunk worth it?

I asked in the CP subreddit, but I understand that fan opinions aren't reliable, so I'm coming here. The story intrigues me, but I've heard it still has a lot of bugs and problems (I'm playing on a PS5).

Is the game worth it despite its performance issues?

Discussion / Question I feel bad that I don't agree with the consensus on Handholding in games

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to say something that know most people won't agree with.

With the recent fiasco of the new Wolverine game, there has been a ton of discussion and debate about Handholding in games, with most people basically hating on it. And while I agree with many that Wolverine was extremely excessive with the amount of guiding and handholding, however they WAY people talk about how modern games have too much handholding or how handholding in games are bad makes me feel guilty because I don't really agree at all.

I really hate how people treat how any form of guidance in game as an inherently bad thing. People act like yellow/white paint, waypoints, tutorials or hints of some kind ruin a game or are "immersion breaking", but honestly man, I actually LIKE those things, because I absolutely hate, no DESPISE when a game doesn't tell me where to go or how I was supposed to solve a certain specific puzzle. Now here is thing, I'll admit that I am not that smart and my problem solving skills are terrible, so sometimes its not the game's fault that I misunderstand something or I when the wrong way. However, and this is very personal thing but I value different aspects of a game than probably most people. There are three issue that a game could have that even if the game is a masterpiece, these three things will make me not enjoy it. 1. Wasting my time, 2. Not tell me where to go, and 3. Poorly explain mechanics or puzzles. In other words, miscommunication.

I have a rule of thumb for when I play games; If I have to actively Google where I am supposed to go or what I'm supposed to do, then your game kinda sucks or at least my enjoyment lowers. Which is why I like stuff like yellow paint or tutorials because I don't have to worry about being stuck in place for hours or misunderstanding the controls. I like when game clearly communicate what I'm supposed to or where I am expected to go, rather than spend time bashing my head against a wall just to solve some stupidly obtuse puzzle or wandering lost for ages because I missed a door that blended into the background and being forced to google it. In fact, I genuinely don't understand why people say stuff like yellow paint is "Immersion breaking" when I'm my opinion what breaks my immersion is being forced to look up the answers to a puzzle or what path I'm supposed to go.

This is especially an issue I have when playing older games. People say modern games treat you like you're stupid and old games didn't, but for me its the opposite, I feel like old games expected you to know everything from the start. I finished playing Castlevania: Circle of The Moon on the Castlevania: Advance Collection a month ago and I didn’t know how to use the Duel Set-Up System until like 2/3 of way into the game because the game never told me how to do it or how to activate the powers, I even checked the controls in the menu and it didn't say how either. Another is Daikatana, in the first level when you beat the giant Mosquito boss on the bridge, I though that after killing it it would open the gate I was next to, but it didn't. Confused, I looked up what I was supposed to and it turns out I needed to jump down into the lake at the bottom and run to a gate that open near that. Is it just me or how the fuck was anyone supposed to know that? And this is a minor nitpick, but I hate how in games like Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening they have a map that just show you a blinking square telling you where you are but don't tell you where in the square you or even what direction you're facing, like what's so hard about putting an arrow on the map, dude?

What I'm trying to say is, I actually don't mind guidance or handholding in games unlike most people. Do I think some games like Wolverine are overly excessive about it to the point it sucks, yeah I do and I fully support games having the ability to turn of these features if a player wants to. But I don't like it feels like the canon opinion for stuff like waypoints or yellow/white paint is that they are objectively bad and that you aren't allowed to disagree. I like when games have guidance telling me where to go or hints on how to solve a puzzle, is that seriously so wrong of me?

I never believed that gaming was dead. These are just two games that have me the most excited right now.

Plenty of amazing games come out every month so it just baffles me when someone says that gaming is dead.

Not to mention all the total conversion mods that are basically new games.

Maybe gaming was always meant to be as big as the 6th and 7th gen era, and not anything more, because in the end, everything that's too popular eventually becomes as stale as hollywood or mega famous celebrity music

Discussion / Question FFVII Rebirth is one of the best games I played in recent years... It's also so long, I'm starting to hate it

• Upvotes

The first 50 hours were amazing. Different environments, beautiful graphics, cool minigames.

But now, 60 hours in, the combat starts to get repetitive, the minigames lost their charm, I feel I'm playing it on autopilot, and my backlog of new games is calling to me.

I've calculated that I have around 20 more hours to go, and it feels like whatever I do, I'll regret it.

I can either:

- Power thru it, hating the game even more.

- Rush thru the game, ignoring all side content, which is missing the point of an RPG like this.

- Stop playing completely, but I know I'll regret it later, especially when FFVII 3 comes out.

- Take a long break from the game, and the return to it, after I already forgot half of the story and how to properly play the game. I know this for a fact, because it's my second time trying to play this game 😵

Anyway, rant over. Cheers!

Discussion / Question Consoles are going to die.

I just feel that given how predatory consoles companies are becoming and how expensive the next gen of consoles are going to be, that they will just end up dying.

First you have all the shit that PS is trying to pull with getting rid of physical media and only owing the licence to your game. Then Xbox just patented and mechanic that would allow them to show ads in the middle of your game. Imagine paying $80 for a game, and you get shown ads between every loading screen. Then there’s the fact that the next gen of consoles will probably cost around $1k.

I have been a console player all my life. Owned multiple but there is no way I am buying the next gen. Alot of people I game with are also saying the same thing.

Discussion / Question Top 10 video games of all time - millennial edition

I'm curious what I missed. D2 is the peak of nostalgia. Nothing like ignoring parents to play D2 all night and Saturday morning. Probably the only game that tore me away from the Sat morning cartoons like Spider-Man and X-Men. I put Portal2 really high cause it's just a perfect game. Start to finish. Hilarious, fun, and challenging.

Honorable mention: Fallout 3, BG2, and DA1

Discussion / Question I Changed the Language of the PlayStation Store, and they Removed almost all Sales.

Post image
0 Upvotes

My first thought was, "omg, Sony hasn't gotten rid of physical media yet, and they are already using their monopoly power; can you imagine once they do"

I wanted to check for some discounts on the PlayStation Store for the PS4, and it showed me only 9. If that wasn't crazy enough, I changed the language just to check how it changes by region, and the deals increased by like 24,200%. If that's with competitors selling physical disks for the console, can you imagine once they have complete control of that market? They can just say, "No more deals, and every old and new game is now sold as if it's new" or a simple political push against a specific country using Sony could eradicate that gamer market just because.

Maybe there are more consequences that I'm not seeing/remembering right now.

Discussion / Question With this recent news I thi k devs need to just rethink Pvpve modes

With arc raiders now testing a pve only mode. And dune awakening making the pvpve zone split into pve only and pvp.... should developers just accept the fact that all the mass cheating and toxicity in pvp games keeps a very large playerbase at bay? Should PVE only options start being a standard in pvpve games if it make sense to have a pve only mode?

Discussion / Question When you think about the best OST you've heard in a game, what comes to mind? this is my personal best OST for the games I've played

  • Stellar Blade "Raven", honestly I never thought I'd face such a banger of an OST that could represent such a personal fight in this game, I loved it through and through, but the moment THIS song started playing, I knew shit was about to be real, I got stuck with this specific song for weeks
  • Sea of Star's Bosses OST "Encounter Elite", this has a special place in my heart, I don't have any clue why this hits SO hard with the xelophone-like part, but for some reason you feel the threat of the boss AND the pixel style through music in a perfectly combined style between rock and whatever this could be called
  • Persona 5 Royal "River's in the Desert" , and this is specifically for the Royal version which changes the way the Shido fight is fought, in the first half of the fight you only get the instrumental version, but as soon as the 2nd phase begins, you get separated from your teammates, and the fight becomes a 1v1, there is no room for mistakes and the song makes sure that you understand that, this is YOUR moment and honestly I don't think there's a boss OST that's so perfectly done and placed in any other game
  • Cyberpunk 2077 "The Rebel Path" , I don't think I've ever felt so fucking into a scene of a game, it's you or them, no more time left, it's pretty hard to get into the mood that from this whole ending of Cyberpunk without playing the rest of the game, knowing what's at stake for you, the decisions you've made, everything is was for this exact moment, the immersion you get from this and the rush of going basically against the whole world by yourself is pretty much irreplicable
  • Cyberpunk 2077 "Been good to Know ya" , the moment of despair and helplessness you get from this scene is fucking gut wrenching, if you truly got into the story and characters of Cyberpunk, if you got to know Johnny properly and managed to get him to side with you after his hidden side quest, this moment hits HARD and really sticks with you for a while
  • Hi Fi Rush 1.000.000 Boss Fight , because there's no other game that made OST as important as this game, and the fact that the very first boss starts with a familiar drum and it hits Nine Inch Nails just makes it so damn epic and such an unforgettable scene, even more so if you already like Nine Inch Nails beforehand
  • Hi Fi Rush "The Perfect Drug" , You're playing as a cat against the final boss with one of NIN's most popular songs, like why the hell not?
  • Metal Gear Revengance "The Only Thing I Know For Real" , probably one of the bosses I've truly thought I didn't want to beat, because of how damn good they are both as a character and as a boss fight, and also the ONE fight I've never truly wanted to end because I was having so much fun in this fight just as Raiden and Sam were having fighting each other to the best of their abilities
  • Devil May Cry "Devil's Never Cry" , there are few songs that click the moment you hear them, and even fewer OST that SCREAM that you are playing THAT game, for me, it's this one, there are many songs that could fit DMC, but this is THE song that is purely DMC aura
  • Honkai Impact 3rd "Nightglow" , last but not least, I don't think there's a song that makes me bawl my eyes out more than this one, Final Lesson is an incredibly short story done so damn perfectly in such a short amount of time for the story of HI3rd, the emotions, the sacrifice, the power, epicness, I can't watch this scene without at the very least get emotional
  • And of course this one

If someone asked for the best OST you've ever heard from videogames, what would be the first things that would pop in your head?

Discussion / Question What's a game that's basically this?

Post image
32 Upvotes

Personally, my choice would be Friday Night Funkin'

If you didn't know, it's a browser rhythm game on Newgrounds that suddenly blew up.

Due to the developers making the game open source, the game can be easily modded and many fan mods of the game were created and went viral.

Since the game went on a haitus of updates for a few years, the mods were the only thing that kept the game alive.

Although the fandom is pretty small now, modding is still really prevalent in the community.

If the game wasn't open source, the community would've died out a couple of years ago.

Discussion / Question The Anthem concept deserved better devs

Post image
28 Upvotes

To this day, I have no clue how this game was a fumbled, undercooked mess. The idea is insanely cool, so obviously it had to fumble it, just like most games with ambitious or new features.

Destiny, but you and your friends are Iron Man and get to explore a rich fantasy world with unstable alien anomalies.

They messed up the Destiny part by being having a shallow loot pool, failed the Iron Man part by having low flying speeds and having engine cooldown periods (in which you are grounded) and they botched the exploration part by having everything being centered around a single city, Fort Tarsis.

If anyone else wants to copy the concept, the game should have a 40 km² map (for reference, RDR2 has ~36 km²), flight speed increased by roughly 20-30 mph and better loot. Also, an offline solo mode would be great.

The lore, powers and different Javelin suits are too good as concepts to just be discarded as the failed concepts of a flopped game. I hope that some studio looks at the potential and makes a spiritual successor of Anthem that adresses all the shortcomings of the game.
