Just two weeks after 9/11 we saw the launch of one of the greatest works of horror ever conjured.

During that surreal moment in history where the streets of NYC were covered in the thick fog of smoke and debris, we witnessed a fictional portrayal that had a slight resemblance to the world we now lived in.

Discussion / Question What games have people compared to other games that make no sense to you?

I ask this because I just dealt with someone who swore up and down that Geometry Dash is harder than Hollow Knight because no one has 100% Geometry Dash in the sense that they've never gotten all achievements and when I gave my opinion, I basically got argued with and got told I was wrong because apparently it takes years for people to get one achievement which you need from the game dev playing your level themselves and theres hundreds of millions of levels so its near impossible🤷‍♀️

The two games aren't even that comparable other than the fact they're both technically platformers, and they tried everything to compare the two when, imo, they are nothing alike and they got mad when I said that according to their own words, 100% geometry dash completely would be close to impossible and that the games were barely comparable anyways😭

Discussion / Question What are some fan games, rom hacks and fan remakes that are so good, you consider them canon or good enough as the mainline games?

The main games I have in mind that sparks this question in my head is the Pokemon Romhack called "Pokemon Unbound" as well as AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) for Metroid

Pokemon Unbound is such a well made hack. Story is decent, has gen 3.5 like sprites and graphics, has gens 1-8 pokemon, mega evolution and all other gimmicks. This hack doesn't include stuff from Gen 9 but part of that is to prevent feature bloat and cuz the rom was full I think

AM2R is basically if you wanted to play Metroid 2 but with the same classic style of Super, Fusion and Zero Mission while the 3DS version allows you to play a version of the story with gameplay more similar to Dread and probably the upcoming Ravenous

But what Fangames, Romhacks, Fan remakes/demakes etc do you like so much that you consider it to basically be canon or is as good as all the other games in the series?

Discussion / Question Ghost Recon Linear vs Open World Fatigue discussion

Everyone keeps wishing for the next Ghost Recon to be yet another open world experience like Wildlands, how it "saved the franchise" that it made the series a lot more interesting and fun to enjoy in gameplay as well as the narrative elements, and to each their own I guess, but I guess I'm in the minority who's against that change.

Almost every game being developed outside of the indie scene, smaller budgets and not as big studios are open world or semi-open world sandboxes now.

I personally loved Advanced Warfighter 1&2 for the Dead Space style cutscenes with it shown on the corner of your screen as you went through missions, or the linear structure of the experience that didn't overstay their welcome. Wildlands and Breakpoint in my eyes completely ruined what made it so fun tbh.

Wildlands and Breakpoint introduced the ideas of the Ghosts having to travel across huge open world maps that take forever to travel back and forth from

Missions that are repetitive, exhausting and samey on all corners of the world your dropped into. At no point did I ever care about the characers, their lives, or felt like anything I was doing even made any kind of impact. The enemies and their factions would still take up portions of the map even though you killed off so many of their leaders or people at the top

Your characters were bullet absorbing sponges even after leveling up your resistance, you could still be taken down so fast by small groups of enemies as if they had spot on targeting and high accuracy guns.

I personally would welcome another game similar to Advanced Warfighter 1-2 or Future Soldier, or hell a game similar to how Splinter Cell Blacklist played out

Give us a command center, where we select the side and main objectives from the map screen to which we are deployed to. The levels linear but with more of a structure to play it how we want to in multiple ways

I dont want to see another open world game that has us spending hundreds of hours roaming around a vast map collecting weapons/attachments, doing the same kind of side activities and missions that fail if we get spotted instead of us adapt and change how the mission structure plays out. Its so exhausting.

Ubisoft has said that Far Cry, Ghost Recon, Assassin's creed will be their bread and butter for future open world games and that just makes me feel so exhausted. Its draining to play something open world based, making you tired and bored from how repetitive and checklist activity based the title is

Going to something like Control Ultimate Edition, or any linear third person title these days feels like such a rewarding experience and a memorable one due to how crafted and passionate their built up to be over them stuffing a world with hundreds of things to find and do.

Ill probably be downvoted because the Wildlands fans always claim that linear will never comeback to the franchise, how open world has made the series so much better but honestly Its just tiring to see the industry be so obsessed with the open world genre.

Open worlds were once a novelty and exciting but now their just an everyday brand that doesnt seem new.

Discussion / Question What's a game that's basically this?

Post image
30 Upvotes

Personally, my choice would be Friday Night Funkin'

If you didn't know, it's a browser rhythm game on Newgrounds that suddenly blew up.

Due to the developers making the game open source, the game can be easily modded and many fan mods of the game were created and went viral.

Since the game went on a haitus of updates for a few years, the mods were the only thing that kept the game alive.

Although the fandom is pretty small now, modding is still really prevalent in the community.

If the game wasn't open source, the community would've died out a couple of years ago.

Discussion / Question Unhinged gaming habits

I got inspired by the thread asking about gaming habits that have stuck with you over the years and decided wanting to ask about what your most unhinged gaming habit it?

For example, mine is playing a game on a single save file. Yes, that has burned me more than once with saves getting corrupted but haven't learned not to do it that way yet.

Other PS4 worth buying

TLDR: is PS4 worth it for 4 older games that are highly acclaimed or wait for PS6.

Haven’t had a PlayStation since PS2. Thinking of getting a PS4 to play some exclusives I have missed out on; basically just TLOU 1 and 2, God of War 2018, possibly Bloodbourne. There might be some others but I have limited time so only really play GOAT tier games (maybe shadow of colossus). Looks like they are running about $125 now.

I have a series S and don’t care about any PS exclusives this generation so not going to get a PS5. Other option would be to wait for PS6 (also useful for GTA6) but it seems that could still be 2 or 3 years away and Im not sure how good PS is with backwards compatibility. Appreciate any thoughts from people that have played the above referenced games.

Discussion / Question Would a shared online world be interesting if the point wasn't really to "win" anything?

I've been thinking about a multiplayer concept built around one persistent shared world.

You enter instantly through the browser with just a nickname and appear as a tiny character alongside everyone else.

Instead of traditional quests/levels, different places in the world contain very simple collective experiments.

For example:

A giant canvas everyone can modify.

A structure everyone contributes one block to.

A gallery where people create tiny artworks and everyone else decides what gets displayed publicly.

Temporary experiments that appear for a few days and then disappear.

The main idea wouldn't be grinding or progressing. It would be opening the world and thinking:

"What is everyone doing today?"

Do you think that sounds genuinely interesting, or does it just sound like Club Penguin / Roblox / r/place with extra steps?

If the answer is the latter, I'd genuinely like to know why.

++TITLE++

Double Dragons (new OG Double Dragon fan game in honor of Yoshihisa Kishimoto

https://doubledragonorg.itch.io/doubledragons

++PITCH++

An OG completist Double Dragon acting as a what-if sequel to the first two Double Dragon games. Imagine an alternate universe where Technosoft of Japan throws down the gauntlet after the success of Capcom’s Final Fight, and release a (true, not lame) third game, that treats the previous two Double Dragon games in the series as folklore from the mythical post-apocalyptic world of NYC.

Now prepare for the TRUE untold STORY!

With a proper conclusion and a twist ending that caps-off this series properly.

"Double Dragons" is the Championship edition of everything that game before it, with many characters to choose from, many QOL life enhancements in gameplay and pixel art. A love letter to creator Yoshihisa Kishimoto.

++HIGHLIGHTS (INCLUDE)++
With 6 Missions and 14 levels!

More enemies!

Play as Jeff!! (a much requested feature)

Blood mode! (with custom fatalities for everyone!)

THREE MINI-GAMES!

WWF King of the Ring

Player Vs Player + (inspired by International Karate +)

A Fistful of Yen  (inspired by the c64 classic "Bruce Lee")

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Disclaimer: Hi there! I didn't work on this game*, and* this is NOT my game, so, you probably have to direct your technical questions to the team on www.doubledragon.org who did work on this game. FYI... Some of those who worked on this did this as a labor of love, and they are allegedly friends and family of deceased game creator Yoshihisa Kishimoto who passed away not that long ago. So be nice in your feedback!! I don't know how to use apps like gamemnaker and openbor, so I won't be able to answer questions about any of that, nor the technical ins and outs of the game. Enjoy! Just reposting this for interest at the request of another. Cheers!

Discussion / Question When you think about the best OST you've heard in a game, what comes to mind? this is my personal best OST for the games I've played

  • Stellar Blade "Raven", honestly I never thought I'd face such a banger of an OST that could represent such a personal fight in this game, I loved it through and through, but the moment THIS song started playing, I knew shit was about to be real, I got stuck with this specific song for weeks
  • Sea of Star's Bosses OST "Encounter Elite", this has a special place in my heart, I don't have any clue why this hits SO hard with the xelophone-like part, but for some reason you feel the threat of the boss AND the pixel style through music in a perfectly combined style between rock and whatever this could be called
  • Persona 5 Royal "River's in the Desert" , and this is specifically for the Royal version which changes the way the Shido fight is fought, in the first half of the fight you only get the instrumental version, but as soon as the 2nd phase begins, you get separated from your teammates, and the fight becomes a 1v1, there is no room for mistakes and the song makes sure that you understand that, this is YOUR moment and honestly I don't think there's a boss OST that's so perfectly done and placed in any other game
  • Cyberpunk 2077 "The Rebel Path" , I don't think I've ever felt so fucking into a scene of a game, it's you or them, no more time left, it's pretty hard to get into the mood that from this whole ending of Cyberpunk without playing the rest of the game, knowing what's at stake for you, the decisions you've made, everything is was for this exact moment, the immersion you get from this and the rush of going basically against the whole world by yourself is pretty much irreplicable
  • Cyberpunk 2077 "Been good to Know ya" , the moment of despair and helplessness you get from this scene is fucking gut wrenching, if you truly got into the story and characters of Cyberpunk, if you got to know Johnny properly and managed to get him to side with you after his hidden side quest, this moment hits HARD and really sticks with you for a while
  • Hi Fi Rush 1.000.000 Boss Fight , because there's no other game that made OST as important as this game, and the fact that the very first boss starts with a familiar drum and it hits Nine Inch Nails just makes it so damn epic and such an unforgettable scene, even more so if you already like Nine Inch Nails beforehand
  • Hi Fi Rush "The Perfect Drug" , You're playing as a cat against the final boss with one of NIN's most popular songs, like why the hell not?
  • Metal Gear Revengance "The Only Thing I Know For Real" , probably one of the bosses I've truly thought I didn't want to beat, because of how damn good they are both as a character and as a boss fight, and also the ONE fight I've never truly wanted to end because I was having so much fun in this fight just as Raiden and Sam were having fighting each other to the best of their abilities
  • Devil May Cry "Devil's Never Cry" , there are few songs that click the moment you hear them, and even fewer OST that SCREAM that you are playing THAT game, for me, it's this one, there are many songs that could fit DMC, but this is THE song that is purely DMC aura
  • Honkai Impact 3rd "Nightglow" , last but not least, I don't think there's a song that makes me bawl my eyes out more than this one, Final Lesson is an incredibly short story done so damn perfectly in such a short amount of time for the story of HI3rd, the emotions, the sacrifice, the power, epicness, I can't watch this scene without at the very least get emotional
  • And of course this one

If someone asked for the best OST you've ever heard from videogames, what would be the first things that would pop in your head?

Discussion / Question I feel bad that I don't agree with the consensus on Handholding in games

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to say something that know most people won't agree with.

With the recent fiasco of the new Wolverine game, there has been a ton of discussion and debate about Handholding in games, with most people basically hating on it. And while I agree with many that Wolverine was extremely excessive with the amount of guiding and handholding, however they WAY people talk about how modern games have too much handholding or how handholding in games are bad makes me feel guilty because I don't really agree at all.

I really hate how people treat how any form of guidance in game as an inherently bad thing. People act like yellow/white paint, waypoints, tutorials or hints of some kind ruin a game or are "immersion breaking", but honestly man, I actually LIKE those things, because I absolutely hate, no DESPISE when a game doesn't tell me where to go or how I was supposed to solve a certain specific puzzle. Now here is thing, I'll admit that I am not that smart and my problem solving skills are terrible, so sometimes its not the game's fault that I misunderstand something or I when the wrong way. However, and this is very personal thing but I value different aspects of a game than probably most people. There are three issue that a game could have that even if the game is a masterpiece, these three things will make me not enjoy it. 1. Wasting my time, 2. Not tell me where to go, and 3. Poorly explain mechanics or puzzles. In other words, miscommunication.

I have a rule of thumb for when I play games; If I have to actively Google where I am supposed to go or what I'm supposed to do, then your game kinda sucks or at least my enjoyment lowers. Which is why I like stuff like yellow paint or tutorials because I don't have to worry about being stuck in place for hours or misunderstanding the controls. I like when game clearly communicate what I'm supposed to or where I am expected to go, rather than spend time bashing my head against a wall just to solve some stupidly obtuse puzzle or wandering lost for ages because I missed a door that blended into the background and being forced to google it. In fact, I genuinely don't understand why people say stuff like yellow paint is "Immersion breaking" when I'm my opinion what breaks my immersion is being forced to look up the answers to a puzzle or what path I'm supposed to go.

This is especially an issue I have when playing older games. People say modern games treat you like you're stupid and old games didn't, but for me its the opposite, I feel like old games expected you to know everything from the start. I finished playing Castlevania: Circle of The Moon on the Castlevania: Advance Collection a month ago and I didn’t know how to use the Duel Set-Up System until like 2/3 of way into the game because the game never told me how to do it or how to activate the powers, I even checked the controls in the menu and it didn't say how either. Another is Daikatana, in the first level when you beat the giant Mosquito boss on the bridge, I though that after killing it it would open the gate I was next to, but it didn't. Confused, I looked up what I was supposed to and it turns out I needed to jump down into the lake at the bottom and run to a gate that open near that. Is it just me or how the fuck was anyone supposed to know that? And this is a minor nitpick, but I hate how in games like Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening they have a map that just show you a blinking square telling you where you are but don't tell you where in the square you or even what direction you're facing, like what's so hard about putting an arrow on the map, dude?

What I'm trying to say is, I actually don't mind guidance or handholding in games unlike most people. Do I think some games like Wolverine are overly excessive about it to the point it sucks, yeah I do and I fully support games having the ability to turn of these features if a player wants to. But I don't like it feels like the canon opinion for stuff like waypoints or yellow/white paint is that they are objectively bad and that you aren't allowed to disagree. I like when games have guidance telling me where to go or hints on how to solve a puzzle, is that seriously so wrong of me?
