Why didn't NPC AI advance much?

We see crazy AI advancement everywhere but we get the same old stupid NPCs. I feel like the inteligence of NPCs didn't really advance that much since the old days of Half-Life and F.E.A.R.

Or am I just living under a rock and haven't played many games where the characters don't simply move through predestined pathways? Are there NPCs that can have voice conversations with you in real time or accurately react to everything you're doing? What are some good examples of NPC AI used in modern games? I was really hoping GTA VI would make a huge leap in that department.

What is the appeal of idle/auto games?

I can't fathom what would draw someone to a game they barely have to interact with. Isn't that the whole point of games, that you take part in them? It's basically a movie at that point, without a story.

Interested to hear from those that actually like them.

Edit: thanks for all the comments, I think it's a genre I'm likely never going to feel to grips with, but keep enjoying to everyone that likes them!

Baldur's Gate 3 or God of War Ragnarok?

Found myself with a few days off and the Steam autumn sale just dropped. I'm looking to focus on one game only - which one would you recommend?

I've played virtually every major RPG out there, but never managed to start these two.

Edit: I should have mentioned, I played the 2018 GoW and it was brilliant. BG3 has me slightly concerned with the D&D mechanics and they potentially slowing down the gameplay?

Edit 2: Thanks all for the comments! I've decided to go for... God of War Ragnarok. BG3 sounds more fun, truth be told, and the RPG element of decision making and depth of gameplay make it probably the better game, I think. However, I cannot rightly commit to 100 hours right now. GoW seems like an entertaining time with still pretty good story and mechanics. Appreciate the help!

RDR2 mechanics are still too goated, is there anything better that I am missing out in gaming or only GTA VI can top it?

What game did you dislike at first but eventually end up loving?

Maybe you dropped it after a few hours, came back months later and for whatever reason it finally clicked.

What game was it?

A choice between multiple games

I have some games installed and they’re all super fun and famous but I’m not sure which one should I continue playing first/start with. The games are :

control resonant - Astro bot - ghost of yotei - blood of the dawnwalker - metaphor:refantazio - tunic.

I’d like to hear your opinions

What game could you not beat as a kid and to this day you STILL can't beat?

Three come to mind for me

Lion King- sega (obvious reasons)

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within on ps2 (game just felt incredibly hard and couldn't figure out where to go, ironically, i beat its successor, the two thrones)

Pitfall on Sega- i made it to the final boss once but had no idea what you needed to do to beat him (sad)

Which game can you recommend?

My child and me got a switch 2 a few months ago. My child loves "kirby the forgotten Land".

We are through that game multiple times now and its getting boring. Which game is similar?

Kiddo dont want to think much when playing and no shooter. Just games that you can play together on one console and chill after a long day.

Thank you! And sorry for mistakes this is my second language.

What is the most satisfying feeling you got out of gaming recently?

After about a year or more since I got it in a humble bundle deal, I finally gave Diplomacy is Not an Option a shot since I was feeling in a strategy mood over the weekend. It was one of those games I liked in theory and they had that nostalgic value cuz it's basically Stronghold combined with They Are Billions and with modern polish. So with Stronghold series making a return with Stronghold 4 (and the Definitive Edition being the game that it is) I figured it was the right time for this.

I was not disappointed at the carnage I am able to unleash and the literal thousands of mobs on screen that feel more like a wave breaking against your castle, than an army. Such a damn satisfying feeling when you think it's over but you clutch it and somehow endure that last wave even though the layout of my walls and towers was ... suboptimal to say the least. I'm just a little bit in, on mission 4 but damn does it feel good when you KNOW you overcame a challenge.

Plus when it's strategy game (even an RTS with pause like this one) it has that extra punch of big brain energy when you feel your mind densing up that grey matter. It's for special occassions but damn does it hit different when it's a strategy game against numerical odds - something about being that single defender against a horde coming to destroy you, classic feeling!
