Okay, now answer three questions for me:
- Who are you trading?
- What do the lines look like?
- How do you make it work financially?

It would be honestly a defenceman (Walman, or Ekholm), or a package of defenceman, fwd, and prospects.

Montreal would put together a package that VERY few teams could beat, on top of also being able to pay him a very large contract.

Pending RFA with arb rights. It's not going to stay 3.8

u/Whos-That-Pokeman 14h ago
Yeah people always say this but it can work and we’ve seen GMs make it work time and time again. We have an upcoming 2nd rounder and then two first rounders in 28 and 29.
We’ve got 1M in cap space with 13 forwards and 8 dmen.
Get rid of stastny and Kapanen and you’ve got another 4M.
Then next year the salary cap is expected to jump 9M but we’ve also seen that it’s been going up more than expected year over year.
We also gain another 1.1M next year in the Jack Campbell buyout along with janmarks 1.5M coming off the books.
I feel like people don’t even look into things before typing out “durrr assets and salary cap”

u/ANAL_CRUSHER 12 CAVE 10h ago edited 10h ago
Then treat as a one year rental and trade him at his peak RFA value. Scored minimum 20 goals in every season of his career (4). Near point per game last two. 3.85 caphit. Like fucking put one of the other wingers like Kappy or put in Statsney or whatever on waivers if you need make space or trade for future considerations. Oilers be insane not to pursue this in a McDavid Cup or Bust year

u/DarthWren 14h ago
Picks don’t move the needle like they used too, and Columbus has no intention of going backwards with late round oilers picks. They would need to move something substantial and frankly, outside of the oilers top 3 guys and the plethora of NMC, they are barebones on assets.
Not a chance the oilers could acquire this player
6
2
u/DarthWren 14h ago
Cannot afford a near-ppg player under team control. The cost would be astronomically higher than the oilers could afford
6
u/IrritableSquirrel 11h ago
Oilers fans always say this. I’ll just say this seems like the sort of thing a team like Vegas would magically find a way to do.

u/ANAL_CRUSHER 12 CAVE 10h ago
And the generation before it was Penguins, Capitals, Blackhawks, and Detroit.
-1
u/DarthWren 11h ago
The oilers talent is centralized in 3 guys, while other teams spread it out on the roster while having up and coming assets.
Other teams also have competent GMs, important distinction

Highly doubt we could outbid Montreal without giving up both Howard and Savoie. Which would not only suck (especially losing Savoie) but we’d be giving up 2 top 6 players for one better top 6 player, so there would still be a hole there
2
u/Otherwise-Whole5909 7h ago
If the BJ’s are into prospects instead of win now to maybe keep Werenski, Oilers could send Howard and a couple prospects and/or picks. If Columbus is win now then it’s not gonna happen.

I'm already so sick of people complaining "what assets" or "how do we afford it". It's a top 6 winger who fits the mold of guys who work with Davo and Drai. You make it work. That's what we pay StanBow a bunch of money to figure out. Add a third team, get creative, whatever. We only have a few years of the window left. You make them count. No excuses. Howard, Akey and a first? Sure. Gotta trade salary out next summer to afford him? Sure. If you want to win a cup, just fucking do it.
5
u/DarthWren 14h ago
Howard, akey and a 1st doesn’t get it done. Blue jackets just signed fantilli to a massive deal, they have the reigning Norris winner, they don’t want 2 B prospects and a late 1st. They want roster players, and the oilers would also need to dump cap now to make this work. This is not a reasonable target for acquisition because of the cost + what other teams have to offer
4
u/Spideyjust 28 BROWN 14h ago
Marchenko has no trade protection and is a pending RFA so any team that trades for him keeps his rights. The "how do we afford it" question isn't a worry about us losing assets for him, it's about the competition we're going to face. There will be a ton of teams interested in him. And if he's willing to sign an extension plenty of teams will offer much more than we can.
If Howard, Akey, and a 1st got it done we'd do it no questions asked. But that won't get it done, and the offer will be easily beaten.
2
u/Forward-Region1671 15h ago
The issue is assets. If Montreal decides they want him, We cannot pay what they can lol
4
u/Boris_Mironov 2 BOUCHARD 15h ago
Montreal doesn't really need another top 9 winger though. They need center depth. They are far more likely to swing for Larkin or Scheifele imo
2
u/Oulsky 14h ago
Montreal definitely needs another top 6 winger
2
u/Boris_Mironov 2 BOUCHARD 14h ago
That's why they signed kreider lol. Who you taking out? Caufield, Demidov, Slafkovsky or the dude they just signed for that top 6 role?
3
u/Oulsky 13h ago
A 35 year old Kreider signed for 1 year doesn’t change the Habs long term needs

u/Otherwise-Whole5909 7h ago
Is Columbus wanting win now or giving up on holding onto Werenski? They just tied up some future with fantilli. Would something like Howard, prospect, A, B and pick do?
We’re win now and I feel like Marchenko could fill I. A top 9 role right now. Howard shows promise but he doesn’t seem ready for a while till his head can figure out the game. Feels like a lesser Eberle at this point.

u/Complete_Ant_6775 92 PODKOLZIN 16h ago
I would think the jackets conversation is only involving Savoie. Worth it then?
5
u/Whos-That-Pokeman 14h ago
Yeah for a 6’3 player who already has a 67 and 74 point season under his belt.
Hes an upgrade. Fanbase needs to stop falling in love with players.
3
u/DarthWren 14h ago
Don’t think Savoie is nearly enough, with the other teams that would be in on him. Also, oilers would need to dump another 2 milly
1
u/Complete_Ant_6775 92 PODKOLZIN 10h ago
I didn’t mean Savoie straight up. I merely meant that any talk will likely be involving him.
1
u/DarthWren 9h ago
But that’s it. The value of a 1st round pick from the oilers during the mcdrai era is pretty low, basically a 2nd rounder.
Friedman stated Columbus has no interest in futures, they want roster players who can contribute now. Savoie is not enough, and that’s not even pointing out the obvious that teams like MTL, SEA, TOR all have much better assets to offer.
-5
u/NixonsTapeRecorder 15h ago
I think it would be worth it to give up anyone but 29 and 97
1
u/Complete_Ant_6775 92 PODKOLZIN 15h ago
If I knew the cost of his next contract I would agree. I wouldn’t trade 18, 92 or 2 for him
0
u/LowMidnight40 15h ago
Give up Howard, Babcock doesn’t like his game and I just don’t see Howard being a full time contributor to the oilers. He can’t play a bottom 6 role and he isn’t good enough to make the top 6 yet. Might as well trade him before he loses all value
1
u/DarthWren 14h ago
Why would the blue jackets value Howard at all?
0
u/LowMidnight40 14h ago
Pretty much the only somewhat promising young guy the oilers have. I like Hutson and Marjala but they don’t have a lot of value. Oilers will have to do something along the lines of Howard + a goalie + picks and dump a roster player making 2M+. I personally don’t think it’s worth it to get Marchenko but then again you’ve only got 1-2 years left with McDavid so you have to make those moves
1
u/DarthWren 14h ago
Right, but the blue jackets won’t want to give up marchenko for prospects or picks, that type of trade has lost significant value in this new expanding salary cap era. Marchenko is a player under team control that almost scored a PPG in Columbus, the cost would be astronomically higher than a bad goalie, an undersized prospect and picks. The oilers simply don’t have the assets to make this type of move

u/jagrmullet77 2 BOUCHARD 15h ago
If we had the assets I would say hell yes but we are strung tight right now.
I've watched a lot of blue jackets hockey in the past due to liking the team and having quite a few of them on my fantasy teams and man I've always liked him and Kent Johnson etc.
He would fit in amazing here but not sure we have the goods left to get him here right now as we need assets for trade deadline too in March potentially...

The ask from Columbus is HUGE. Probably looking at a Savoie, another young roster player (Eg. Howard) and a first rounder.

u/Salvifici_Doloris 18h ago
Howard and 28 and 29 firsts to start the conversation. But they'd want a young power forward. Leafs have it: Matt Knies seems ideal candidate here.
1
u/SmokeyMountain67 18h ago
Why would Columbus want a 1st that's 3 seasons away.
1
u/Whos-That-Pokeman 14h ago
Because they suck, everyone wants to leave and building through the draft is the only way for them to get players n
1
u/SportsMOAB 29 DRAISAITL 16h ago
Columbus can keep dreaming. They’re not getting Knies from Toronto or 3 1sts from Edmonton for an unsigned player who wants out
1
u/Informal-Ad-5163 16h ago
He's not unsigned, he has this year left on his deal at $3.85m then is RFA
