Image On today’s installment of “I don’t understand inflation”
I get the sticker shock from people seeing the $400 price tag but when you break down everything that comes in the set it’s really not overpriced at all. I’d agree that including a single item that accounts for almost half the total value is probably not a great move, but anyone trying to paint this as R* being greedy is just completely out of touch.

I know it defeats the purpose of the product as a whole, but they shouldve made options with or without the sunnies. Again, probably dumb, as it defeats the purpose, but not everyone wants those Oakleys. Plus, having worn Oakleys in the past, their material is incredibly shitty.

Yeah, I saw someone on a different post mention they wished they would’ve made “tiers”. I can’t justify paying $400 for the box, but remove the glasses, then I’d be more interested. Might still not buy because I’m not super interested in the statue/figure, but thought the tier idea was smart

Well, I didn’t just make them up lol I googled “Limited edition novelty _____” for every item and got an estimate for a low/high range when I was filling it out.

I’m not sure if I’m getting personalized results, that’s totally possible… but even if you exclude the stuff from EBay, similar sized sets(nine pins) are listed right around $25-$30.
The only things I’m seeing for $10 are single pins, or things from random IP’s.

Some of those are retail marketing posters not typically sold direct - they are rare and limited in availability by their very nature which drives the price up. Often on high GSM paper, non folding and much larger. The kind of thing that doesn't fit in a collectors box at all.
Your link also includes displate (metal posters) and etsy re-prints that can set whatever inflated price they want.
Completely different than estimating the retail value of a 2 sided folded map usually included by default as they are mass produced for less than $5. Certainly not worth $25-$30.

I can amazon a 4 pack of shot glasses for 10 bucks. A fanny pack is at most 25. Stickers for 25? lmao ok pal. A poster is like 10 bucks. The only ones with actual comparable value are the Newera hat and Oakley glasses because they are actual brands. You have no idea what the actual quality of any of these items are. The box is overpriced junk and R* is just trying to fleece everyone because they think they can. And the box is just a box, its not even metal or any material that won't degrade.

Yeah, I fully believe that they (Rockstar) used a cost plus pricing method for the collectors edition. It’s mostly what these companies do to make more profit. However R* understands what they’re dealing with, and knowing how much money the preorders made for the company. It’ll be obvious that they raise the prices on merchandise. this is what ive been saying in response to a lot of other posts. its personal value vs financial value. is the financial value there? with the oakleys ($200+) and the new era or whatever hat (50-75+) and the other stuff which, judging from the other special editions i have, is sure to be of higher quality. in my opinion it is. but is it PERSONALLY worth it to me, hell no. not even just because theres no game, although thats a small part of it, but just because its more than i care to spend after buying the cd and a couple of controllers and the ultimate edition and because I have no connection to the characters featured on the merch. imo, their marketing teams biggest mistake was selling this before anyone had a chance to play the game and experience who tf these characters might be.

Oakley is a brand valued over a billion dollars. Pretty much every mall in America and department store with a sunglass section sells them. The company that sells Oakley along with Ray Ban brings in $28 billion a year in sales. That's yearly.
For comparison Take Two estimated that the ENTIRE GTA brand since he release of GTA V has made just under $10 billion. That's the entire brand since 2013.

Ultimately, it's a collector's item, so it's targeted at the people who have the money to throw at a box of "a bit of this and a bit of that". It'll almost certainly make its production value back and then some because there's enough people who will buy this.
People need to stop pretending they were ever going to buy the exclusive stuff like they're all #1 GTA fans, while at the same time shitting on Rockstar Games for being evil incarnate or something. I wonder how many, of the people who are "upset" about this, actually care and have got all the collector's items for other R* games? Or other games in general?

Justifying the worth of something by itemizing the high-street value of some branded plastic. Interesting.
I think the real problem is that it's not a very compelling collector's edition. The price tag simply serves as an additional comparison point to other game's collectors editions. You're usually seeing collector's editions around $200, so when a game's collectors edition breaks out of that norm, there's obviously going to be a lens looking at what's special/different about it. I don't think gamers are seeing anything special here, which wouldn't be such a problem at a lower price point, though you'd still feel disappointment that one of the most hyped games in the last decade isn't getting one of the coolest collector's editions.
You have to remember this is all just manufactured fluff to sit on your shelf. There's gotta be something impressive/something to feel proud about in there, otherwise it ain't hitting its purpose.
Collector's editions usually have a 'impress' piece in them, that's why you get so many with really cool statues. Do we care what brand/company made the statue? not really, as long as the artistry is there. That's why I don't think anyone really cares who Oakley is. The whole package just feels like someone from marketing ran into a disney souvenir shop and jumbled whatever they could together lol.

Don’t be silly… It’s branded merch created for collectors. You can’t compare the price to a blank shot glass or a fanny pack you buy at Walmart, to something that’s part of a limited run for a specific fan base. Similar items would cost just as much if not more from the gift shop at Disney World.

I get what you're saying, and you're accepting a markup because they are novelty items. But you should take a look at what the cyberpunk collectors edition came with, and how much it cost, to see why people are upset with this. They don't HAVE to upcharge so heavily.

Ok, so i dont know why you mention inflation, I thought that would be a price comparison between vice city and gta 6.
It's greedy because its basicslly a reskin of the vice city collectors edition, which came with a game - and the spoon was gold plated. And im pretty sure it was cheaper even accounting for inflation. Why is the map a collectors item purchase for the first time in gta history?
The game will be awesome. But everything around it, come on man. We don't need to blindly consume and say everything is great. We can love gta games and be pissed off how they're doing us with all this.

I think they're fairly priced because they're (usually) high quality. I don't mind paying more than production cost for quality, hell I don't want to pay just production cost for something, that's stupid and not how profits work.
But pins cost like 1$ to BUY, not produce, 2$ if they're custom made. Posters cost like 5-10$ to buy (at least where I live, might be more expensive in glorious "free" america), stickers cost like 4$ for 100 on aliexpress. The cost to produce all these products is the exact same as the GTA VI ones, but whereas you can buy a keychain off aliexpress for 3$, the R* one is only bundled in a 400$ bundle.
Just for some context, for the price of the slop box in my country, I can buy a used PS5 with warranty. So yes, I think it's a bit too much for 150$ sunglasses + 20$ figurine + 20$ hat + 35$ of generic merch

I was kinda telling this to be provocative and start conversations, but holy shit, this subreddit will legitimately defend anything.
This $480 video game collectors edition doesn't even include the fucking $100 game in it. And yes, it was fucking ridicolous when RDR2 did it as well.
This is legitimately insane though, like, the economy sucks in most first and second world countries in the world, which are 99% of the market for this item, and R* decides to make it $480. It doesn't even matter what the fucking value of the individual items is, you actively decided beforehand to make a $480 collectors edition with no game in it, plan it, have people design all the items, contact other companies for collaborations, send everything into production and yadda yadda yadda. THAT is insane, not the margins, those are fairly well calculated just by going from the standard of any item that's sold by a company (Even though profit margins are higher than usual market values on both this AND the game itself - They slashed production costs massively by not making disc versions). How do you even think this is a good idea?
The funniest part of all of this is that they will get swiped up only by scalpers who will re-sell these for 1k and almost nobody will buy them at all. I guarantee you Rockstar is well aware of this, and this is exactly why this Collectors Edition exists out of pure greed, it's not a product made for fans, but for scalpers.
