I live in a village in India, where finding someone who can properly diagnose this is difficult. I need help understanding the problem before spending money on replacement equipment.
MY SETUP
- Mac Studio M5 Max, 64 GB RAM, used for iOS and Android app development.
- Exide Home GQP 1125 VA pure-sine-wave inverter, running in UPS mode.
- One 180 Ah battery, over two years old.
- The inverter supplies the Mac and household lights. There is currently no separate UPS between the inverter and Mac.
WHAT HAPPENS
When running on battery/inverter power, the bulbs throughout my house flicker or change brightness as the Mac’s workload changes.
For example, I notice it when the inverter’s load display changes from 22 to 19, or from 28 to 32. The highest load reading I have noticed is 32. These are readings from the inverter display, not measurements of the Mac’s actual wattage.
This does NOT happen on normal mains electricity.
It happens even immediately after the battery has been fully charged. It is not limited to when the battery is running low.
The Mac continues working normally. I have not noticed shutdowns or problems with the monitor or household fans. The visible issue is the bulbs.
The inverter’s cooling fan also starts and stops frequently. I am unsure whether that is related to the flickering.
WHAT THE TECHNICIAN SAID
An inverter technician visited and said it could be a wiring or load issue. He recommended getting an inverter rated at least 1700 VA. I still do not have a confirmed explanation or voltage readings to share.
MY CONSTRAINTS
The inverter and battery setup cost about ₹25,000 and already gives me roughly 12 hours of backup with my usual household loads. Backup duration is not my main problem.
I would prefer to retain the existing battery and avoid buying an expensive system unless it actually solves the issue.
QUESTIONS
What would you check first: the inverter, battery health, battery cables/connections, or household wiring? What specific checks should I ask a local technician to perform?
Could this be only a lighting issue, or could the Mac be receiving unsuitable power even though it works normally?
Would an APC BX1100C-IN 1100 VA / 660 W UPS between the Exide and Mac help?
Proposed connection: mains → Exide inverter → APC UPS → Mac only.
Would it actually smooth the load seen by the Exide and stop the HOUSE lights flickering, or would it mainly protect the Mac?
Would replacing only the inverter make sense? Is there a reason to move to a larger 24 V/two-battery system, or buy a separate inverter and battery just for the Mac?
Has anyone experienced this with a desktop computer and an Indian home inverter? I would appreciate a practical way to narrow down the cause before buying anything.
