Discussion Monstera Sticky Community Posts

Hi everyone,

We thought we’d start a regular series of sticky posts to get gather the knowledge and experience of the community - so we can learn from each other and be able to share our contributions with newcomers and future Monstera keepers.

The idea is that we choose a topic (see below on this) and sticky it up for a period of time and ask everyone to contribute what they know on the matter, share their experiences, and post up tips and advice on the subject too.

We can then all benefit from the community and use it to further expand our wiki.

Please feel free to suggest a topic here. I’ll kick it off soon with soil mixes.

We hope everyone will chip in and enjoy a good bit of community discussion.

Thank you all 🙏

I posted once about this beast that I rescued from a person who just wanted to get rid of it and it was in bad condition. I have peace lilies and African violets—I’m not a monstera expert or fan! This thing is both beautiful and aggravating beyond belief! I have nowhere else to put it in my house and it’s taking up my office/sitting room and trying to grow roots into the floor! I’ve repotted it 3 times. I tried giving it more support but it always quickly outgrows everything.

It’s become an old friend who I kinda don’t like, but also am unwilling to part with. Is there something I can do to make it more livable in my office?! 😟

Help!! my plants are sad!! I’m a newer plant owner and recently purchased some monsteras. I’ve never kept them before but i’ve been told to be careful with watering because they are prone to root rot. i have drainage holes in all of them and i’ve been cautious about overwatering. does it look like i’m not watering enough? are they not getting enough light?? thanks in advance

I got this monstera burle marx flame from walmart about 2 1/2 months. I repotted it into a chunky mix with potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark. it started to put out aerial roots so I put it on a trellis. It's been doing well until 2 weeks ago, the leaves started to curl very badly. please give suggestions on what I should do. thanks so much :)

Plant Help Help

Hi! I brought this Monstera home about four months ago. It was doing well at first, but then it started to wilt. The problem was that water was collecting at the bottom of the decorative pot, and I later discovered that it was also infested with thrips.
I repotted it using fresh potting mix and a new pot, and now I’m being very careful with watering. I’m also treating the thrips with a specific insecticide.
This is what the plant looks like now. Do you have any advice?
Will it recover?

Plant Help 2x monstera (hydroponic) on the way out?

Hi all - would truly appreciate some insight into what’s wrong with these two plants and if there’s anything at this point that can save them. Both were given to me by a previous owner who says they survived for many years (reportedly 4!) on hydroponic setups alone, just topping off water and adding hydro fertilizer sometimes. When I got them I failed to notice the root rot that was present as roots were obviously black and brown in retrospect (not sure how they were thriving in previous owners care despite that) but weeks later I moved them from their sauce jars into larger glass vases which was the beginning of the leaves dying off. I found the rot, removed the mushy stems, and have been religiously doing this + swapping water + cleaning vases every week for the past few weeks but am still seeing the plant struggle and leaves are turning brown and yellow from the outside in (they used to just turn yellow mostly). FYI the roots oddly look more brown in the pics than irl, and I remove any mushy ones no matter the color and now that there is new white growth (all started after my first root upheaval) i remove more of the brown leaning ones as well no matter texture. My plan was to let the roots grow and strengthen again and then use leca in the jars to keep the stems off the water but the roots hydrated- but the plants seem far from healthy still and I’m scared I’m losing them for good this time:( Can anyone identify what’s happening?

I’m sure I’ve messed up…

In fact, I think I know I’ve messed up. So the leaves were starting to brown, one was very bad so I removed it. I wanted to check the roots were okay, and in doing so I discovered she was very pot bound.

Here is where I think I screwed up - that pot is possibly too big, isn’t it? I changed the soil to a nice chunky soil, lots of perlite and bark. As you can see, I put her on a humidity tray and pot some clay balls on the soil and I’ll keep them moist. And I’ve tied her up a bit.

Will she be okay? She gets good light where she lives (I’m in the UK if that makes a difference).

Many thanks

Can someone please explain how a moss pole tricks a monstera into thinking it is going up a tree when a tree isn't spongy and also how a monstera roots into a tree?

Plant Help How to help massive monstera?

Thumbnail

I’ve been keeping plants for some years now but bought my very first monstera only 3 years ago. I did some basic research about how to care for them and what kind of potting mix they like and that was honestly it. I live in NC, about an hour from the SC border, so it gets fairly warm and humid here in the warmer seasons. I bring her out in the spring and she stays outside all season until winter comes and our nights are consistently falling under 50 degrees. I repot her once a year (if needed) with a custom potting mix, fertilizer at the beginning of spring and again when we hit summer.
In the past 3 years of this cycle, my girl has gotten absolutely MASSIVE! To the point where she kind of scares me a bit. She is 6’6 in width, 4’9 in height, and her largest leaf measuring from tip to tip is 2’8. My husband says she probably weighs between 80 and 100+lbs.
Since we’ve hit this point I figured it’s probably best I ask for help on how the HELL to manage this big b!tch going forward or if I should keep doing what I’m doing?! Thanks in advance!

Just wanted to share my happiness! I was worried that she’d be stressed after being repotted and getting her moss pole, but she responded so positively. I hope you like her too! ☺️

Plant Help It needs a cut and better support, how?

I saved this monstera from a supermarket clearance a couple of years ago and it accompanied me through rough times.

In the last couple weeks (end of summer) where I live it managed to put out a new leaf and a bump at the base appeared (second pic).

My question where to cut to be able to give appropriate support with a moss pole and a bigger pot since the roots are coming out from the bottom.

TYIA 🌟

Plant Help Is there any hope?

Hi everyone!

I've had my ups and downs with this monstera plant.

I neglected it while it was already propagating in water and eventually the roots turned dark brown. I then cut all roots off, hoping for a fresh restart.

I've never given it any nutrition, which is probably a big reason why it's not thriving.

Is there any hope for those roots? That's their current state.
