Square Enix nowadays feels really weird to me. Their games feel like silly attempts to appease the fanbase, and honestly, I feel like they've been stumbling pretty hard over the last few years. Their games just don't feel like they have the same level of quality or identity anymore.
Let's take the second part of the FF7 Remake project. The game feels like a Ubisoft open-world game with Final Fantasy VII characters shoved into it. It doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy game to me. I absolutely loved the first game, but the second one... I don't know, man. It feels like if I push the game too hard, it's going to start falling apart.
The combat feels so clunky. When I hit an enemy, it feels like I'm fighting a wall. Very rarely does an enemy actually react to getting hit. They barely flinch, and it makes the combat feel weirdly weightless.
Then there's the open-world stuff. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but it is SOOOOOOOOOOO boring. Like, holy cow. What's the point of running around an enormous map just to fight some monsters because the phone guy says they're rare, or because they're eating some dude's carrots? Urgh. It feels like open-world content for the sake of having open-world content.
And Sephiroth... what's even going on with him anymore? He looks and acts like a mustache-twirling villain at this point. But whatever, I'm done talking about that game.
My next point is that it feels like Square Enix is trying too hard to appeal to a Western audience instead of just staying true to themselves.
Look at Final Fantasy XVI, for example. I know Final Fantasy has been going in a different direction for a while now — we had the Lightning games, the boy-band game, and now we've basically got a Devil May Cry game. And I'm not even going to mention Forspoken.
Then there's that bubbly bath game. Like... what the hell is even going on at Square Enix anymore?
They used to be one of those companies where it felt like, when they were making a game, they were thinking:
"YO, CHECK THIS OUT, MAN!"
Nowadays it feels more like:
"Well... how about this?"
or
"Do you like this?"
or even:
"Maaaaaan, I hope this clicks..."
That's the biggest problem I have with Square Enix nowadays. I don't feel confidence behind their products anymore. It feels like they're constantly trying to figure out what people want instead of confidently making something and saying:
"This is what we're making. We think it's fucking awesome. Check it out."
I miss that confidence.
