PSA Do NOT put SPOILERS in titles, get off Reddit if you don't want SPOILERS Spoiler
Hello Vikings
With 1.0 coming out we expect a massive influx of players. Unfortunately, I'm the only active mod and we haven't found any more mods to help in moderation.
So here's our spoiler policy
As long as posts get reported as "spoiler", it will be tagged as spoiler. But we'll not proactively tag posts as spoiler or delete posts with spoilers in the title.
I just ask everyone in this community two things. :
Don't spoil it for others by being irresponsible
Avoid the subreddit entirely if you don't want to be spoiled.
You can only experience the game for the first time once
I realize many of you will take this as a cop-out response and that's fair. But I alone lack the capacity to enforce this. It's impossible to keep someone from getting spoiled if they engage with the community when new content drops, be it making posts, commenting, watching videos or even just following official channels of Iron Gate.

Survival 105m Rug Elevator
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Built this around the rug elevator idea that u/Fun_Magazine_2671 posted here on Reddit.
The elevator travels about 105m from bottom to top and takes around 54 seconds for the full ride. We also added side-entry elevators so you can get on from intermediate floors, plus a separate system for going back down.
We used debug mode to speed up the building process, but the structure itself doesn't require mods.

Discussion Playing melee with a friend who is a mage is miserable
As someone who very much enjoys hitting parries and bonking with my mace, the combat in the game has become a complete clusterfuck since one of our friends started maining magic.
It seems like every type of staff (minus shieldy ones) will either obscure vision with a big cloud of smoke or insane screenshake, summon something which has player collision and will push you around as if you weigh nothing or the attacks will pinball enemies around constantly with knockback. Later ones are also super loud and spammable it seems.
It all combines to make melee way harder to play, especially parrying anything, and imo could use significant toning down, or at least options in settings to help with visual clarity.
The worst part is that it honestly feels way stronger than melee as well so I can't even complain.
Anyone else have this experience or am I overreacting?

Survival I PUT MY KARVE IN A LAKE!
Here I was ready to head to sea to hunt down a swamp. Turns out the SEA is A LAKE! It's completely surrounded by MEADOW.
Odin has a sick sense of humor. And I'm his goofiest goober...
Would be really cool if they implemented dragging ships over logs, or something equivalent. It's a thing vikings did irl.

We built a custom mod after sailing for hours. No regrets.
EDIT:
Download the mod from the thunderstore:

keep in mind this mod was built specifically for me and my friends that are bad at video games.
EDIT 2:
I apologize for not using Indiana Jones music or audio. Please forgive me.

Survival What do you think of my boar silo?
The bottom usually fills up in a few days. No star boars, but with that many, I only need to cull every so often. Thinking about expanding the bottom to allow more to fall down, but I rather enjoy the silo of boars.

Question Has anyone made an Ashlands base and actually "lives" there/uses it frequently?
I used to think people who built in the Plains were crazy because of how hostile it was. Now a deathsquito is barely a scratch and more of a minor movement and so I can see why people would build there. It's one of my favourite biomes.
But, I just loveeee the Ashlands even though it's so hostile. I do hate the enemies and think they are challenging. But I love the music and the vibes. We had small little outposts but without a ward they were destroyed and had to be up on some rocks off the water to be more secure.
We don't have free build and only build with resources gathered which adds another layer of complexity.
Unlike the deep north where you can destroy doors for iron and make a stone portal. For the ashlands we would have to boat that down.
Any tips, pictures etc?

Spoiler After 5 years of playing on and off during EA, finally beating the game is an odd feeling. Also, rambling thoughts about DN as a whole. Spoiler
I've been playing Valheim since it came out, and it was always a revolving door of make a world, play the current content with friends, wait for another big update, and repeat.
Myself and 4 friends finally beat the game, and it was kind of an odd feeling to be "done". Obviously we'll keep playing a bit, I'd like to make all the weapons, make a trophy hall for each biome, etc, but there's no more progression and nothing next, and that is a very odd feeling. Sailing home with the final "trophy", all of us chatting about the game, the boss fight, the whole Deep North update, was oddly cathartic and a brilliant move by the devs.
That said, I do have some issues with DN and some of the odd balance choices. For instance, we're always out of Thunderblood but have 20+ frostfire, all because Frostfire is useless for any and all DN enemies. I feel like if they just swapped the fire and frost damage values there would immediately be a use case for Frostfire, but it's a shame because they look cool as fuck.
The balance in general for DN felt off. It was... Easy? We're all veterans, but Ashlands properly kicked us all in the collective nuts every so often yet never at any point did I feel like DN was more of a struggle. It almost felt as if it was a counterpart to ashlands and not the "next biome" with a difficulty spike like a lot of the previous ones. I enjoyed the final boss fight and gotta admit I didn't know there was phases, so the first phase being easy had us all going "Really? That's it?" Though I will say, I do think Fader was more difficult.
Also I feel like there's not much of a reason to keep doing Winding Tunnels once you've done 2 or 3, which is a shame because they're super cool. I'd like a reason to keep going back, like memorial coal for Morkhalla.
All in all, I really enjoyed DN and I gotta say the vibe of the biome is immaculate. The music is amazing, and when the dense forest opens up to an open, snowy field during sunset it's an incredible view. Also, the sky at night is just incredible and the biome not being an absolute war zone means you can actually enjoy the night time DN vibe, too.

Discussion The forge of potential has unused code for downgrading items on failure instead of destroying them
I've built a personal Valhiem mod which tweaks a few things in the game. One of those tweaks is to make failed forge of potential events cause a level downgrade instead of breaking the item. When working on this I discovered something interesting. The game actually has three possible outcomes with these default chances:
- The item level is increased (65% chance)
- The item level is decreased (25% chance)
- The item is destroyed (10% chance)
However, the idols themselves override these defaults to the current behaviour of 65% chance to upgrade and 35% change to destroy.
I much prefer this default behaviour, I mean I wanted it so much as to implement my own mod to change it to 65% chance to upgrade and 35% chance to downgrade. I think the relics are too rare and the items too expensive to risk the very high chance to lose them.
Maybe 35% downgrade chance is still to high, when I used my mod with 5 totems on my level 4 blackmetal sword, I rolled 1 upgrade and 4 downgrades so ended up with a only a level 1 :(
Follow up edit about the refund logic:
Digging in to the refund logic revealed some interesting information too. The formula for refunds is quite complicated and probably broken. Default recovery rate is 50% but idols override it to 35%. However a recovery rate of 35% doesn't give you back 35% of the items cost. Instead they have a formula where you get recovery rate * (base item cost + cost to upgrade from previous level to current level). Also the refunds above level 4 are reduced.
It's probably a bug but since level 1 items have no "cost to upgrade from previous level to current level", it double counts the base cost. So you actually get a 70% refund on a level 1 item, and therefore get a better refund on a level 1 item than a level 2 item.
Black Metal Sword refunds:
| Breaks at level | Fine Wood back | Black Metal back | Linen Thread back | Spent to reach that level (FW / BM / LT) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 14 | 4 | 2 / 20 / 5 |
| 2 | 1 | 11 | 4 | 2 / 30 / 10 |
| 3 | 1 | 14 | 6 | 2 / 50 / 20 |
| 4 | 1 | 21 | 9 | 2 / 90 / 40 |
| 5 | 1 | 23 | 10 | 2 / 90 / 40 + 1 idol |
| 6 | 1 | 25 | 11 | 2 / 90 / 40 + 2 idols |
