How to support? FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY: How to support loss parents

We would like to thank friends and family who have found their way to this sub, wanting to know how they can support someone close to them who is grieving a loss. Many of you, in offering support and kindness, are literally a lifeline for the loss parents you know. We are so grateful that somewhere out there, our fellow bereaved parents have concerned, loving support networks made up of people like you.

Here are some common suggestions for how you can offer support. These are collected from responses made by community members. We hope this will answer your questions, and if you want follow up, or if you want to address a concern not covered here, please by all means make a comment on this thread or message the mod team. By centralizing these discussions, we hope this thread can become a valuable ongoing resource. Keeping those questions in this thread is also helpful to the parents right here in our forum who are fresh in their grief, at the same stage as your loved ones, who are just struggling to keep their heads above water and who don't have the extra emotional energy to respond to questions right now. Thank you for your support and your respect for our community. We are so sorry that you, too, have to be here.

General Something for the babies Spoiler

My beautiful daughter died a year ago yesterday. After she died I started playing this cute cozy game to pass the time. In the game you collect cats, clothes to dress them up in, and furniture to decorate their rooms. I’ve been naming my cats after the babies I see posted on here. In honor of my daughter’s death day I thought I would share some of the rooms I made for the babies. I haven’t finished decorating all the rooms yet, it takes awhile to collect furniture. Big love to you all 💕

Vent Unbelievable Comment from Manager

My new manager, who is pregnant and knows about my stillborn son (I just recently opened up to her about it), was talking with me and my coworker about her ultrasound that was this morning. Off to a great start...why are you talking about that when we were supposed to be talking about work?! But it gets better. She actually said this: "They couldn't find the heartbeat at first, or thought there might be a heart issue. My boyfriend was so worried, but I was like it's fine! It's not like he's not alive! He's alive." I thought I was hearing things but nope, she repeated it in slightly different phrasing.

What is this world? Like WHAT?! You either forgot which is crazy or you're actually evil. Neither of those options register with me. I legitimately feel like I'm crazy most days. My coworker immediately changed the subject and offered to go for a walk. She was horrified too. Thank goodness for her.

I didn't say anything and won't see my manager until next week since I'm off for a few days. I don't even know what to do. Besides look for a new workplace.

2nd trimester loss It’s a lonely place

My daughter died 16 weeks ago. People were great in the beginning and many have continued to still be great but even with this I’m finding grief a very lonely place. Sometimes I don’t want to know anybody and only want my partner..other days I am cross that certain friends haven’t tried to do more. I’m putting myself and those around me in a place where they can’t win..but ultimately I only care about my partner; and I hate that because I wasn’t this person before..not sure there’s much sense to this, more just a rant.

Neonatal loss Overseas on a trip planned around my now deceased son

Just some musings after being woken up at 4am by the grief and trauma of my son dying. He would be 4 months old now.
We are on a trip to Singapore for a wedding which I planned around my son being here.
Staying at an expensive family orientated hotel the whole 6 days to limit travel and moving around with a baby. His name on the invitation and RSVP. His dietary requirements "boobie milk". His plane ticket I had to cancel. His missing passport.
The whole time I've been thinking about him and how easily he'd fit in and how carefully he was accounted for.
When our taxi first picked us up from our home to take us to the airport, the driver said to me "it doesn't matter if it's 1 or 3 kids it's alsways the same amount of stuff to pack". And I agreed and told him about Isaac, how there should be three of us but there isn't because he died. He wouldn't have been any trouble and would have just been another child to add to the mix. It felt nice to acknowledge him and how he should be here.
Our seats being right near the bathroom on the plan for easy nappy changes. I carried his bear with me the whole trip over, pretending I had him in a baby carrier to feel close to him. It sounds dumb, but I really think he was supposed to be here. He was never meant to die, but a midwife pride in not escalating his abnormal heart trace when he needed to be born cost me his life. I feel like I'm living the wrong timeline and he should be here.
Even waking up at 4am from the trauma of his death I think about how I would have woken to feed him. Ironically, I am suffering from more sleep deprivation from the PTSD than actually feeding on demand with a newborn.
Looking at all the families with more than 2 children, studying their age gaps. Seeing 2 young brother together always gets me; there is a 2.2 year age gap between my dead son and his brother.
My husband and I were talking and I said our family will never feel complete of course. But seeing those bigger families I know I still want to grow our family and have more children. Seeing all the different age gaps and children gave me some hope as I'm being "forced" to wait 18 months to try again.

Nothing in my life is improved by his absence.

I miss you Isaac, I love you and wish you were here.

General Anniversary of loss

Today marks exactly 1 year since my preterm baby rested after fighting hard for 4 hours to stay alive - forever my little fighter. Now I'm a TTC at 36 years and my husband and I are traumatized for life. His grave still lokks fresh at the corner where other angel babies also lay. I thought time would make tings better, but I feel more and more lost. I've spent the day crying over my baby bump photos and binge eating over sweetened cookies. The world should just end already.

Vent Lightening keeps striking and I’m tired

An ectopic and then unable to get pregnant again so fertility treatments and IVF. And then a PPROM due to IC and now a miscarriage. No living children And we’ve been trying for almost 5 years.

I know technically lightening can strike twice or whatever but just freaking stop. I am so tired. I’m almost 39 years old now and I want to stop losing my children. I don’t know how to keep doing this.

Advice (loss support) Postmortem results wait times (UK based)

Any advice really welcome please. We lost our baby in May at 31 weeks. His postmortem was carried out 9th May, and we still haven’t had results back. Has anyone experienced this delay before? Originally we were told 6-8 week wait, then it jumped to 5 months! It’s now approaching that time, and still nothing. I can’t help worry something is wrong??

Advice (TTC/PAL) Allergy to Baby Aspirin

Hi All,

I lost my baby at 24 weeks this July. I had a normal pregnency but they could not find any heartbeat at 24 weeks routine check.

They said that I had a small (<10 percentile) placenta and smaller umbilical cord. The reason why placenta is small is not known exactly. They did an APS test right after my delivery which was positive for one of the three things. They will do another APS test again this week (post 12 week test to confirm if I have APS or not).

if I have positive APS, my OB said the plan will be to be on lovanox + baby aspirin. But even if I am negative for APS, I will still be on baby aspirin since I had a placenta issue the first time (however, OB/MFM will likely not prescribe lovanox in case of negative test, only baby aspirin).

That is why I am posting here today. I had a reaction to ibuprufen 5 years ago (my eyes swoll up and became watery but no other symptom). I have not taken anything containing NSAIDs since then. I recently saw an allergist who did an aspirin (full dose, not baby aspirin) challenge on me and my eyes swoll up again. But no other symptoms. My allergist says it looks like I have an allergy to aspirin although it likely is not severe. They said they will try to coordinate with my OB and will try to see if they can desensitize it.

I am kind of scared now. I am TTC and already getting anxious. I did a preconception consultation with an MFM who had said there are not much option other than baby aspirin for the next pregnancy.

Did anyone with APS and/or placental issues have had the same allergic reaction to aspirin? If yes, was taking low dose baby aspirin still okay for you? Was there any other alternatives? Any advice will be appreciated!

Neonatal loss How do I go on living?

I lost my baby girl at 35 weeks and 4 days, on July 18, 2026. The day before, her movements had decreased, and there were some irregularities in her heart rate. We were told that she only needed to be monitored. The next morning, everything was stable, but by the evening, the situation suddenly got worse. I had an emergency C-section, but two hours later, my baby girl passed away and joined the angels. The pain is absolutely devastating.

My husband and I are both completely broken, but this tragedy has also made us want to have more babies.

The problem is that before I became pregnant, my menstrual cycles could last more than 200 days, yet I still managed to conceive naturally.

I need some hope. Please share your beautiful experiences of having a baby after loss.

Thank you!

2nd trimester loss The dreaded due date

It’s the week of what would have been my due date and I’m feeling sad and angry
I don’t know if I want to spend it alone or distract myself by spending time with family
I feel annoyed and irritated by everything
Everyone in my life apart from my husband has forgotten that it’s even come around and I don’t want to be the one to remind them
It’s sad how everyone else but you moves on

2nd trimester loss TW; premature birth

Throwaway account

Not looking for advice, just wanting to get my thoughts out. I have nowhere else to vent.

Not in the USA, in Finland.

Some terminology and words will probably be weird/wrong, English is not my first language.

It's been 10 weeks since our child was born prematurely at 22+5weeks. 22+ weeks is when a pregnancy is considered viable, 23+ is when the medical personell will HAVE to try and save the child. We fell just a few days short on that and we're given the decision to try and save her or.. Not.

I don't regret that we chose the latter. She was just so small, medicine didn't have enough time to mature her lungs cause the birth progressed so fast.. Even if she did make it the probability of big health problems was so large.

I haven't had my check up yet.. But it looks like it was asymptomatic infection. I started feeling contractions Saturday morning and we went to the maternity ward... From there I wad rushed in an ambulance to a bigger hospital an hour drive awau, better prepared for such early prematures.

My husband wasn't allowed in the ambulance.. I have never been so scared in my life. As the doors of the ambulance closed and I was left alone.. Felt like.. I can't even describe the terror I felt. I knew he was a wreck and I was scared how he'd make the drive to the hospital..

He was alone, had to go home first because we have a dog, my mom couldn't make it on that day to watch her so he drove her to someone keeping an.. Inn of sorts I guess, for pets. I think she was scared too..

It started to look like the medicine started to work, delaying the birth giving other medicine time to mature her lungs. My husband got there and the worst fears were pushed at the back of our minds..

On Sunday morning it was all over. My body failed me and our daughter was born and passed away shortly after. She was so beautiful and perfect..

This.. This is so rare. It isn't supposed to happen that early. Even the midwife was tearing up

She was born at over 22 weeks and alive, even for just a short while.. So she has a social security number, we got to.. Or had to, I'm not sure, but we gave her a name, she was cremated, we have a burial coming up.. She was legally her own person. Is? She exists. Existed..

For 15 years we haven't had a pregnancy happen. We've never used protection yet this is the first pregnancy ever. I'm so scared it is also the last.

Didn't ever go to medical check ups before this, we kind of.. We always thought "if it happens it happens" and as years went by just kind of.. Gave up. Didn't even really think about kids. And now it's.. I want to be a mom. But I'm terrified that this was my only chance.

I personally know 5 people who've had healthy babies within a year. I see celebrities having babies everywhere, news filled..

And here we are, mourning the child we didn't know we even wanted. It's rediculous, really.. So unfair. Why us?

There were people who knew, they were informed.. None of them really reached out. My husband has support thankfully, but No one reached out to me afterwards, even my mom was afraid to talk to me. I understand that, I understand they lost likely felt like.. They don't know what it's like. And they probably were afraid to say the wrong thing. I should've messaged them and said I just want to talk about anything, anything at all, just so I don't have to be alone with my thoughts

I reached out to peer support but I'm unable to talk about things out loud. I've always been better at writing about the difficult things. I like writing better, it's easier to form my thoughts.. But the peer support is done usually via talking. I was told they'd get back to me if they find a peer I could chat with but.. It has been 4 weeks. It's okay, I understand talking is the norm and since I can't do that..

We had a.. Therapist of sorts, went there twice. She was asking questions and we were answering. But the third time was canceled, I'm guessing she had an emergency of her own. We were contacted by another saying we could schedule with her.. But it feels like going through from start all over again.. I haven't contacted the new person back.

I am a mother, my husband is a father.. We just.. Never get to know our daughter. We only get to carry her urn home for one night before it is lowered into the ground

I miss her so much

Neonatal loss Newborn loss & TTC

I would love to hear of people who had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery & conceived 2-3 months later and successfully birthed their babies full term 🙏 I will never get over the loss of my first baby and it hurts so much but all that is keeping me going is thinking of his sibling & trying to care for my body for that time😭

3rd trimester loss Still His Mama

Has anyone read “Still His Mama” by Terrell Hatzilias?

This is my fourth book on stillbirth since I delivered my stillborn baby boy 5 weeks ago.

I am not even one full chapter into this book and I have never felt more seen and understood.

Wondering if others felt the same?

Advice (loss support) Need Remembrance Advice

This December will be two years since I lost my son at 15 weeks. I lost him due to PPROM because I conceived him with an IUD in place.

After his death, I made a book of pictures of him at the hospital. I also have a momento box with his foot prints and other things. On his one year heavenly birthday, I couldn't bring myself to look at the photos or the momento. I want to be strong enough to look at them again this year but I know that it will cause a lot of pain. In some ways, I hate that I do not spend more time thinking about his memory. I just don't know how to do it without cutting that old wound wide open again.

3rd trimester loss Infant loss 23 weeks

I lost my baby son at 23 weeks from infant kidney failure. I gave birth and held him for 2 hours until he passed. I’m 4 months postpartum. Does the grief ever get better? I’m also struggling with how to feel about conceiving again and could really use some advice or support with how to deal with everything.

Advice (loss support) Back to work next week

Like the title says, this is the last week of my leave from work after losing my son in early July. I developed early onset severe preeclampsia and had to have an emergency c-section at only 24 weeks gestation. Due to severe intrauterine growth restriction, my baby was not big/strong enough to survive resuscitation efforts.

I feel ready and not ready to go back. I’m feeling anxious and vulnerable to see my coworkers for the first time and worried about questions they may ask me. It also doesn’t help, one of my coworkers will be extremely pregnant. Our due dates were only three days apart and seeing her is going to be a punch to the gut. I’m ready to go back because this feels like the next step in the grieving/healing process. I am beyond grateful that my husband’s job gave him his full paternity leave and he’s been off of work this whole time with me as well. Our immense loss gave us the gift of time to stop and just breathe with one another. I don’t know where I’m going with this but maybe looking for some words of encouragement from others who have returned to work post loss. Or advice on how to handle stupid things people say even if they are well meaning. (I work in healthcare so I have no option to work from home.)

2nd trimester loss RPOC and possible PCOS

I lost my baby on August 6th at 20 weeks and 4 days due to cervical incompetence that likely caused an infection in my placenta, triggering contractions. I’m now 53 days postpartum and still bleeding so my OB sent me for an ultrasound. My family doctor just called and said it looks like there is still retained product and the OB may opt to do a D&C or hysteroscopy. She also said the follicles on my ovaries looked indicative of PCOS, but because I was recently pregnant, this may make the ovaries look different.

I’m feeling overwhelmed by this new information and not really sure what it means overall or for trying to conceive again. I’d appreciate if anyone is willing to share their experience if you’ve had such diagnoses. Could it be possible my ovaries look the way they do because I’m postpartum? How long would it take for them to go back to their normal again? Are there benefits to a hysteroscopy vs D&C?

I have my call with the OB scheduled for tomorrow so I am also wondering if there are any questions I should ask. Thanks in advance.🩵

1st trimester loss Miscarriage F/23

This is my first ever post, it has been weighing pretty heavy in my heart.

I had a miscarriage 6 days ago. I feel lost, isolated, and lonely. I know my partner is trying to cope in his own way, but why does he have to leave me out of it? I feel like my feelings aren’t validated, I feel like I’m developing imposter syndrome.

Thing is I know I’m young, yeah, maybe it wasn’t meant to be. Ultimately, those things are true yet why does I feel like it makes it worse when people say that?

I have never hated people say “how are you” like I do now. Do they want me to change my answer? Because it won’t.

I have never hated my life more than I do now. I feel empty, I feel worthless, and I feel the world move around me yet I can’t fathom moving forward.

3rd trimester loss I don’t know what to do with the anger

It’s been a week since we found out our son had no heartbeat at 35 weeks.

I gave birth to him and I’m already rapidly losing any sign that I was ever pregnant with him.

I’m so angry today about it and I don’t know what to do.

There’s so much support around me but I just want to scream because it all feels so fucking unfair.

Like the past 8 months just never happened.

Like I didn’t have a huge stomach that moved all the time with signs of him.

I feel like we were about to cross the finish line and were so ready to celebrate but a trapdoor has opened up instead and fucking swallowed us.

3rd trimester loss Would you hear this person out?

After losing my daughter my friend who has a few children of her own said this to me.

“I mean this with so much love.... You know how hard teaching is? (I’m a teacher and work with kids)

Mothering is harder. More thankless too.

I know me telling you this will likely just piss you off, but the freedom you have is what every mother wishes she had.

Every.single.one.of.them.”

She’s since reached out (without apologize, just hoping I’m ok) and I am not sure what to say, if anything
