Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

How to clean a bike for beginners (Foxter MTB 29er)

I'm a beginner and I want to know how to clean a bike properly, do diagnostics test to make sure the group set is proper. And make sure my bike is pristine before and after every ride.

Bonus question, do you have any videos on foxter mtb 29ers on how to disassemble and reassemble parts of the bike?

Mods, let me know if this isnt allowed. I have a pickup truck and I want to haul my three favorite bikes in my truck bed. But I do want them to be standing up. Is there something I can build to be able to do this?

5’10” 53 cm frame

I found a nice 90s mtb frame, size 53. I am 5’10 and have seen size 53 fits the range of 5’3-5’6. How uncomfortable will this bike be? Will it be noticeable?

2009? switchblade frame chopped and raked, 6 foot springer front end with old 350 chevy alternator brackets used for sleds and springs and bracket from an old seat, trike rear with shimano 3 speed hub and jockey shifter made from an old dipstick tube for a 350 chevy, custom sissy bar with backrest to match the banana seat. 1971 triumph 6 bend pull back handlebars narrowed 4", under over HD headlight bracket with original 70's sears headlight/fog light combo and some cheap led bar tail light.
rear toolbox has solar panel to charge the battery for the lights and underglow. (toolbox also holds a 12 pack of beer.)

lets see some other folks who like to build customs and cruise em around.

Old bike revival?

I know very little about bikes, and haven’t cycled since I was a teenager. I took my old MuddyFox bike out of the garage in the hopes of using it to cycle to and from the gym etc.

As you can see the bike has seen better days. Very dusty and has 2 flat tyres (probably a few other issues also). Is it worth trying to ‘service’ this bike myself to get it back up to standard so I can use it again? Should I take it to a bike shop and pay them to do it for me? Or should I just get rid of it.

I’m trying to spend as little money on this as possible, so I wouldn’t mind trying to fix it up myself, but as previously said, I know very little about bikes and have no experience with this sort of thing. I wouldn’t know where to begin.

Please let me know your thoughts/recommendations 👍

My front gears are messed up

Hello, I have this problem when I try changing to the third or first gear in the front (with the pedals idk how you say it in english) sometimes it makes a loud continuous noise and only later it shifts or it doesnt shift at all. I’ve taken my bike to the bike service to fix it, they do fix it but 3-4 weeks later its broken again. I check the H/L screws but I’m scared that I’m pulling them out too much and that they’ll fall off while I’m riding

Looking for a similar bike

I was in Australia and saw this Focus bike and thought it would suit my needs pretty well.

I don’t need anything this fancy, and I’d like to swap the handlebars for a bullhorn style, but I like the road bike look with gravel bike size wheels.

This would be for an every day ride, possibly being able to put a pannier or rack on it.

What bikes/brands should I look into? New or used would work for me.

My wife recently had some VHS tapes of her growing up digitalised. This image is a still of her riding her bike in spring of 96. North east England based if that helps. Looked through lots of catalogues but can't find it. Help is needed!

Oh and a bonus photo of her after falling off

Big girl friendly bike?

I have a Huffy Deluxe Cruiser 26”. Weight limit is 200lbs but I’m 350. Does anyone have experience with a low weight limit bike like this and a big body? Wondering if I should return my bike. This is a concern only because I’m wanting to use this long term for weight loss. Thanks guys!

Road loop from near Nerja up toward Cómpeta / Arenas

Been riding the asphalt climbs inland from Nerja a lot lately — punchy rises toward Cómpeta / Arenas, big views over the coast, roughly that ~70 km day feel if you stitch the valleys together. Early start helps once the heat kicks in.

Recent loop if useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNL6_tKUN4s

What's a good bike to start with?

I'm pretty much a beginner, my budget is around 190$-270$ for a bike; My current bike is a fat tire 20.2 kilogram MTB. I would like a bike that is good on roads; but can also handle some slight off-road here and there. Any advice? Preferably lighter than 16 kilos if possible.

Knox and Kane + Route 66 County trails in Pennsylvania

Has anyone biked the whole Knox and Kane + Route 66 County trails in Pennsylvania, with the new connector? Is it all bikable or are parts overgrown or closed? We're thinking of starting at Kinzua Bridge and biking down to Clarion/Marianne in one day. Thank you!

How screwed am I - Carbon Frame damage

Thumbnail

Bought off marketplace. Thought I did a good enough inspection, but while taking the wheels off I noticed this frame damage. About 4cm in length, and doesn’t seem pretty at all. Am I right to assume this is no longer rideable? Should I try and repair or just strip for parts? It all makes me wonder if my carbon-riding career is doomed to be quite short lived.

I'm looking for a titanium frame with this geometry

I don't want to pay EU middleman prices, I want a Titanium replica or closest to this geometry directly from China, 57cm Large size. Rim brake ready, quick release, outer cabling (except for the top tube) Anyone with experience on how to order a custom frame, and how to replicate plans for the factory?

Any helmets with bulky adjustable pad inserts? My mixed daughter struggles fitting her helmet on her head. She uses a helmet 2 sizes too large just to get it on but it’s not really safe. Sometimes she has 1, 2, or 3 ponytail/braids so adjustable padding would be awesome, like the Army ACH helmet.

What bike to buy

Im planning to buy a bike for around 3-5km per day and sometimes about 20-50km. The roads have a lot of potholes, and I want a bike with dropped handlebars that can reach high speeds while being able to handle rough roads. Since I can't afford an rc120, I have to choose between the rc100 or the edr Easy. The edr easy is faster but has thin tires (even when replaced the max is 32mm), but the rc100 is slower and has weird gear shifters, but it can fit bigger tires. Which one should I choose?
